I've been looking all over for this version. I saw this film a few times years ago at my elementary school back in the 80's & I could never remember when this film was made. But it has always been one of my favorites & I knew who sang this song, & the first time I heard this song. I even read the book. I also love Judy Collins' version on The Muppet Show.
Simple awesome. My daughter and I just watched this together instead of reading a book. She giggled and sang the whole way through. This is a perfect example of how technology can be used for good instead of evil. Thank you!
Reminds me so much of that mad goat cartoon from "Sesame Street." And, I also cracked up listening to the horse's voice because he sounds so much like Mister Ed. It is also kind of hilarious that some of this song sounds a bit like the "Laurel And Hardy" theme ("she swallowed this animal to catch that animal").
As a child I don't remember being frighten by the song. just curious how she ate all the animals. more focus was on remembering the order of the animals as she ate them. fun. song. lol!
I just read the poem today and laughed so hard at "She dies of course" part, then searched it in youtube and going through the comment found people felt scared of what i found hilarious, strange.
When I was younger I watched this song in so many versions!!!!’ I love this song so much!!!!! This was my childhood!!!! It’s so funny!!!!! I’m 14 years old now and I still love this so much!!!!! This actually came out when I was 1 your old!!!!! It makes me laugh!!!😂😂😹😹
The old lady dances in at the beginning of the video ~ LOL ~ I like that ~ My mother sang this to us when we were growing up ~ We thought it was funny & would laugh ~
What a funny, silly trip down memory lane. We were always singing these type of delecious rhymes. All kids sing now is Money, Hoes n Clothes. Wasn't it great when kids were kids?
I'm a nineties kid who use to love this. Twenty years later I watch this and I'm like: why was I not disturbed by this and why did my parents let me watch this?
Oh man, the poem is creepy enough, but then they add in that horse! We listen to five minutes of a soothing narrator singing over softly strummed guitar chords while watching silly animation, then BOOM, there's a freaky pitch-black horse with creepy yellow teeth speaking in a disturbingly deep and echo-y voice "She's dead, of course!" Not that I'm complaining, I think it's very healthy to scare young kids every once in a while, and it's certainly done well here!
Never heard of this. I guess this is one that Cartoon Network couldn't get for the show "O Canada." Shout out to everyone else here who grew up in the 90's.
Nope! Came back to watch after a comment notification after nine years, and the pandemic is still raging in the second biggest wave with no end in sight!
One of a great handful of short kids movies I remember fondly from like kindergarten-4th grade. If I find someone has posted "Glistening Song" on RU-vid, I'll *really* be walking on air!

Lyrics The following is one version of the lyrics to demonstrate the song's cumulative nature: There 'was' an old tree that caught the sun, I don't know why it caught the sun; my oh my what had it done -a leaf falls as one! There 'was' an old tree that fell a leaf; I don't know how it fell a leaf; But it fell the leafs that fed the tree, the leafs of tree that caught the sun; my oh my what had it done, -another leaf falls as one! There 'was' an old hive of leafcutter ants, that found a tree of leafs thats spent; I don't know how those found that tree, but it found the tree that fell those leafs; those leafs of sun, caught and free; my oh my what had it done - another leaf falls as one! There 'was' an old village that swallowed those ants, I don't know why they swallowed those ants, but they swallowed those ants that ate the leafs, the leafs of tree; those leafs of sun; Caught and free, Each and every one my oh my what had it done - another leaf falls one! There 'was' an old village that swallowed some spiders That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside 'em; 'They' swallowed the spiders that caught the ants; The leafcutter ants that ate the leafs, the leafs of tree that caught the sun; my oh my what had it done - another leaf falls as one! There 'was' an old village that swallowed some birds; How absurd to swallow those birds! 'They' swallowed those birds that caught the spiders That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside 'em, 'They' swallowed the spiders that caught the ants, that ate the leafs that caught the sun My oh my what had it done -another leaf falls one! There 'was' an old village that swallowed some cats; Fancy that to swallow those cats! They swallowed those cats that caught the birds, They swallowed those birds that caught the spiders That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside 'em, They swallowed the spiders that caught the ants; I don't know why they swallowed those ants, those ant that ate those leafs of tree that caught the sun Spent and free each and every one; my oh my what had it done - another leaf falls one! There 'was' an old village that swallowed some dogs; What a hog to swallow those dogs! They swallowed the dogs that caught the cats, They swallowed the cats that caught the birds, They swallowed the birds that caught the spiders That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside 'em, They swallowed the spiders that caught the ants; I don't know why they swallowed those ants that ate the leaf that caught the sun, my oh my what had it done - another leaf falls down! There was an old village that swallowed some goats; Just opened their throats and swallowed some goats! They swallowed the goats that caught the dogs, They swallowed the dogs that caught the cats, They swallowed those cats that caught the birds, They swallowed the birds that caught the spiders That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside 'em, They swallowed the spiders that caught the ants; I don't know why they swallowed those ants that ate the leaf that caught the sun, my oh my what had it done - another leaf falls as one! There was an old village that swallowed a cow; I don't know how they swallowed some cow! They swallowed a cow that caught the goats, They swallowed the goats that caught the dogs, They swallowed the dogs that caught the cats, They swallowed the cats that caught the birds, They swallowed the birds that caught the spiders That wriggled and jiggled and tickled inside 'em, They swallowed the spider that caught the ants; I don't know why they swallowed those ants that ate the leafs that caught the sun; my oh my what had it done - another leaf falls as one! ……
To be honest, the bird looks like Chirp from "Peep and the Big Wide World" from a long time ago. Chirp is red with three lines on her head, but this bird is yellow with no lines on its head.
"i don't know why she swallowed the fly".... really? the cartoon makes it clear she didn't inspect her food properly, on top of which she was greedy and swallowed the whole bunch of grapes without chewing.
Fly: A Bug's Life Spider: Treasure Planet Bird: Melody Time Cat: The Aristocats Dog: Oliver & Company Goat: The Hunchback Of Notre Dame Pig: Saludos Amigos Cow: Home On The Range Horse: The Adventures Of Ichabod And Mr. Toad
+DrRugferdAzinteyer it is a metaphor for "bad choices" indeed, how small, easily resolvable mistakes early on are not best resolved by bigger, more stupid, and ever increasing mistakes later on. that covers all kinds of stupid decisions in life :)
***** glad i could help :) i see a lot of people doing it all the time, covering up years of small bad decisions with more and more bad decisions until everything comes crashing down around them. if only they could just accept that they "swallowed a fly" and have moved on with their lives without it costing their own lives... (suicide etc)
Wow u are right. I musta known this on a visceral level as a kid. Kids are amazing bc they pick up subconcious energy without letting their brain desensitize them
Fly: Flying around Spider: Green spider with a hat Bird:A Female Bird laying a Pink and Blue Egg Cat: A female Anthropomorphic blue feral cat who loves to Be Bird’s Friend Dog: A Yellow Dog with a Red nose wears a small hat that he gets a honking toy called a Horn A goat with yellow teeth that the dog riding a goat the goat and the dog chasing at the cat Pig: a pig that dances and gets hit by the cow’s tail Cow: A Female Red Cow that has purple shoes and hitting any animals Horse: A Pitch black Freaky Horse that had yellow teeth like the goat and says (She’s Dead Of Course)
The animation style on this one looks VERY familiar. I wonder if it's the same studio that made the "Mad Goat" segment shown on Sesame Street (or The Electric Company).
