@@zukodude487987 Yeah, I actually had one which was very good in both the sense of making it fun AND in terms of us learning because I felt like I was actually learning a lot.... then I went to a new school..... The teacher was so horrible no one signed up for the class next year, rip our french dreams :(
Yeah, I agree. I am already learning Japanese earlier this year, and my teacher didn't like how I was learning it, it was a terrible experience for me, but I enjoyed it myself afterward. 😊 🙏
Or anything, really- I'm not sure if this is true, but I've read/heard a few times that exercising makes your brain release chemicals like dopamine, yet so many people hate P.E.
21:31 - "holy shit, this is some spooky-ass kanji right here" This is the most relatable part of the video. Just when you think you have a good understanding of the majority of a piece of content, you see a kanji character with about 20 fucking strokes and you don't recognise any of the radicals because it's all squished together
i'm literally starting to get kanjiphobia(i made this word up), if i see a really big complicated one, i literally feel a bit scared, that's so retarded but it's true
Bro don't worry ,I was struggling to find a good method to learn kanji and stick with in mind,so the best method is atleast 900 kanjis have the other small kanjis or radicals in it,so we can make a story for every kanji . Example ,休. This. Kanji represents the meaning of rest . If you see the first left side half of the kanji is the shape of 人 means "person". and second is 木. Kanji ,means tree . So you can remember the word "rest " by thinking. "A person hold his back on the tree " . You will easily remember the context of resting . Enjoy it ,you can create your own for most kanjis but not all of them .
Ah, this is one good youtube content. Very rare these days. My kind of humor too. Even though I felt it's almost impossible for me to be fluent in Japanese, when you shared your journey in learning this language, you somehow motivated me to study. Thank you! Looking forward to more videos in your channel!
Was feeling really discouraged with my Japanese progress and this popped into my recommended. really motivated me to keep learning and achieve my goals. thanks for the great content and I have subscribed, I'll probably binge all your vids tomorrow
This did the opposite for me, seriously discouraging that he only got this far in two years. But at least I know I'll probably do better if I spend more time on it than him.
@@Livakivi Awesome! I'm already spending upwards of 6 hours per day studying it and in a week, I managed to learn katakana, hiragana, 500ish words, a bunch of kanji radicals, and I'm able to have very basic conversations on certain topics with Japanese viewers in the vtuber community (they call us かいがい二キ and we call them 日本二キ). So I'm hoping my fast progress will continue!
I just wanted to say, after so many videos pushing having a goal, always remembering that goal, so on, I'm so happy to see someone say "No just build a habit, and keep learning". Great video.
Livakivi I really admire japanese culture and really want to start and learn it so i can speak it with people from japan to a decent extend and so I can understand native japanese speakers. What would you recommend to get started? Just duolingo and vocabulary on 2k core? Help me senpai
@@W_out I personally used Duolingo for learning Hiragana, and imo its decent for that. After that, I recommend getting a vocabulary deck. It doesn't have to be the Core 2k(/6k) deck which I used, even though I think it's totally decent. You can also check out Wanikani, but I also recommend checking out this video and the Refold JP1K deck: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-53qKsYxVhoM.html
changing duolingo to japanese to learn japanese in the english courses is such a genius move Edit: changed movie to move since y'all are having a really, really hard time reading 🗿
dude if this was your first video I'm super impressed. Production quality and your style are top notch. You don't have to put this much effort into videos but u still did anyways. Big ups man
Man, I get you - I am Russian, I speak three languages and have learnt 6 (including Chinese and Arabic), and so far - Russian was the hardest to learn.
I’m learning mandarin but this video was still incredibly inspirational and grounding as far as what progress looks like. Look forward to future uploads!
This deserves more views, but it's a niche topic for language nerds like us. You clearly put a lot of work into this video and it looks great. Keep up the good work!
Japanese is basically the only language left that I might be capable of learning at this point. As a native Chinese speaker Japanese is easier for us (However it's it's still really difficult to pronounce since my tough has gotten use to English and some characters like ろ る り can be tricky) After watching your video I got some confidence again. Thank u sir
i saw this video and because of you i started using the 2k6k deck 180 days ago and i just finished the first 2000. when i heard you took 280 days to do the first 2000 for some reason i felt so damn happy... ik comparing myself to other ppl is bad but that just gave a massive confidence boost
The editing on this video is surreal. I'm coming back to this when I get demotivated because it's bound to happen. It'll hype me up in little to no time at all for sure!
There is a lot to learn and digest in each of your videos, that I somehow keep coming back to it multiple times. this is already the 3rd time watching this video
super inspirational! I really liked that demonstration of your 'real world application' and have to applaud you. I'm a language teacher for foreign students in the US, so I love hearing about language learning.
Every so often I come back and watch this video. i'm at 63 days consistency doing my anki cards, video here, video there, some grammar every now and then. But i'm being consistent. I'm learning new words every day and retaining them (to a degree) I notice words in things I look at or hear them faintly in shows. Slowly but surely, and its because of you. I'm mid 30s, and I always wanted to learn this language, and your dedication showed me what is possible to push through and with enough input, I'll get to the place I want to be in my language learning. So thank you, for giving me purpose in challenging my self for something I may never use outside of reading watching anime, but something that means a lot to me in acquiring a beautiful secondary language. I'll try to remember and update back when I can in some intervals to let you know how i'm doing! :)
Coming back to this video after over two years of learning Japanese and very happy with my progress when I first watched this video I didn't understand any japanese but now I know every word in this video
You didn't try LingQ? That's another famous tool, which is supposed to take the pain out of looking up words while reading. The demonstration at the end was very honest and appreciated. The front half makes me think "oh why don't I get back into it" and the second part is the cold reminder "oh yeah, because it's way too much effort just to hear someone's mundane thoughts" ^^ Best of luck but I think there has to be tangible benefit to learning a language to really motivate most people, although there are some for whom the learning out of context itself is fun.
I'm currently in my second month of studying Japanese, and I can already start to feel my momentum quickly slowing down the more I progress. Reading is an absolute pain for me compared to listening, especially since Kanji has rules that seem to be completely fluid and constantly break in and out of those rules.
O shit we got 3 sploon fans here (I'm one too). @@daylinhesford3116 What did you use for that month of learning? And if you ever pick it up again, I recommend Wanikani if you want an alternative to Anki.
I love this video. Learning a language is like building a house. It doesn’t happen overnight and consistency matters or your house will crumble and you have to maintain it.
Tere tere! Im also from Estonia i have same difficulty learning Estonian as you had with Russian, as far as i know, 1 year of kaitsevagi helped me improve like ALOT. And because of that, i think having someone who can fluently speak language you try to learn is VERY helpfull!
Man this video is amazing. It got recommended to me since I've been looking into language learning for french and, in fac, I found that a lot of what you recommended ended up helping me in one way or another to prepare for my B1 exam. Now, having taken it (and, I hope, succesfully), I think I'd really like to start on some japanese. Also your editing on this video is on point. You got some really great moments going on in a kind of video that's usually not that well-developed. I'm subbed and ready to see what you bring next
Wow, you are so cool! You have done a very great job in learning Japanese. Your video is very informative, inspirational and educational. I was very pleased to find a video with a personal experience of learning a foreign language, learn about various kinds of applications and other resources. Thank you very much for your hard work! I watched your other videos and they are very good! I make likes and subscribe. I wish you success and all the very best! :)
You just convinced me to learn a language,It's amazing how much one can learn just from 1hr everyday for 2 years.I'm probably gonna try to start easier language like spanish or french for now,Thanks for the video!
Japanese really isn't as hard as a lot of people think. It's just not a language you can piggy back off English grammar. If you learn it like a child then you can pick it up a lot faster. The rhythm and the fact it has pitch accent just makes it hard to learn if you primarily try to do so from writing, as you are basically teaching yourself to speak every word wrong (Japanese learning English have the same problem).
your level of japanese is so inspiring to me! thank you for making this video! i see myself watching this a few times to remind me why i started learning japanese and korean :)
I desperately want something similar in the 2k6k deck. In addition to the natural translation of the sentence, I wish a more literal translation was also included. It would really help with understanding the occasional more complicated sentence where I can look up the word but have no idea how they come together to mean what the sentence says
Highly rate use of sims soundtracks here. Also this video was brilliant. Tomorrow I’ll begin properly trying to find resources to start learning Korean again. Thanks for the encouragement. This is the most raw and satisfying language learning video I’ve ever seen.
This video is one of the best japanese learning journey videos I have ever watched. It was very useful, and taking all of your advice into consideration. I have about 1 year and a few months to learn as much japanese as I can since I'm moving to Japan to study in a language school. I started learning japanese at all about 6 months ago, but started taking it seriously 1 month ago when I finally decided moving to japan for a period of time is what I wanted to do. I'm a native spanish speaker, and so far learning japanese isn't *anything* like learning english, it is much more difficult. Although I'm studying several hours a day I feel like I'm progressing very slowly. Still doesn't matter, I learn something new everyday and of course I'm having fun along the way. Apart from using anki (core 2,000 words, will get the core 2k/6k now), and my Japanesepod101 lessons, I like to listen to a lot of japanese music with japanese lyrics on. Some of my favourite I transcribe into a notebook and handwriting is very difficult, specially all of the kanji. Taking a long time to write lines correctly. This is an advice for everyone who loves japanese music and want to practice handwriting. I believe this will make my handwriting good on the long run. Also like watching anime for active listening and japanese youtubers. (I'm up for some recommendations!) Anyways, this comment got too long already. Once again, amazing video, underrated channel. Dropped a like and a sub!
One and a half years ago I saw this video, it then inspired me to really start learning japanese. A few days ago I have finally passed the 2k cards on the 2k/6k deck. Thank you for inspiring me and many others.
I love your narrative and editing! Awesome journey, I've been learning Japonese from Duolingo for the past month and just now have I learned all the Hiragana and Katana by heart. I think I'll adopt this anki flashcard method to get the minimum 2k words for reading comprehension. But as you said, it takes time and I'm well aware of that, we have to manage our expectations, but I already knew from the beginning that it would take me at least 2 years to get into a pretty basic level, so I'm not really worried. Awesome video and thank you for the insights!
Thank you! And yeah, managing expectations is a really important part of language learning, I have never really felt a proper "intermediate hell" because I was aware of the possibility of it happening since the beginning. So when progress slowed down despite the effort staying constant, it didn't surprise me at all. If you have that down, you're off to a great start!
It was last year in July when I saw your videos for the first time. I started learning Japanese writing and basic grammar in 2013 by myself when I was 15 but I lost track and stopped learning for several years (far from reaching N5 level at that time). During the pandemic I got receptive again and started looking up words every once in a while. But it was your video which really got me into it again. I really admired your skills and trying to reach your level I began using the Core 2K/6K Deck and I will reach half of the deck by the end of next week (had a head start of ~800 words due to my prior knowledge)! I am looking forward to signing up for the JLPT N3 in July and recently answered the same sample questions like you in the video. Funny thing is (or maybe obvious because we used the same anki deck lol) that I struggled with the same questions like you and had the same thoughts. My comprehension skills are also at a similar level like yours in the video. Back then your skills seemed so far away from mine and I couldn't think of reaching your ability. Thanks to you I really got into it again and all my Japanese skills improved a lot! I am at a level where I understand most of written Japanese and slowly spoken Japanese. I am looking forward to reaching the level of your recent videos! :D
I really love how real you were about learning japanese, especially when talking about learning just to build the habit instead of establishing a concrete goal (which has been the main struggle of starting to learn because I couldn’t think of one regarding vocabulary lmao), that was kinda motivating for me. thanks a lot for this video 🙂
You have inspired me to consistently learn Japanese! Tysm for the motivation, because for a long time I felt like it would take too long, but from seeing your progression, ik that after time, I can get there 😩✋
Your Japanese series is really great, I actually started learning Japanese on 01/01/2024, but I have a little more time than you, so I'll do duolingo + core deck (already doing) + immersion from the beginning and compare the results, maybe I'll even make a video after a year. Thanks for the good videos and motivation, your discipline is inspiring)
thank you for this video! this has inspired me to start learning japanese! i have tried in the past but gave up early on, so i will try again! have a nice day!
Me here improving my English listening watching a guy talking about how he learned japanese xD well, good video bro jajajaja greetings from Colombia jejeje
Found this yesterday, yet, im watching it again because its just that good! Thank you very much kind sir! Watched other vids as well, finally youtube recommendations recommend something good
omg, this is so comprehensive and well thought out. thanks for this, livakivi. i took japanese courses in high school and college. but seeing, reading and hearing the japanese content you showed was lost on me. it feels like immersion is the only way. have you tried italki? you may have but i think a language speaking exchange between japanese and english may be another step in how you learn. ...or having a japanese girlfriend/partner, lol.
21:31 "Holy shit, this is some spookey ass kanji right here" LMAO. Started a month ago and seeing you read comments on yt vids after 2 years is an awesome stepping stone I'm looking foward to. Thanks for the great video man.
Update, if anyone cares, its been 260 days of learning and I just watched your first Itakly video. I never would have thought, but I could understand about 60-70% without looking at the english translation. I got the general themes of the conversations. Learning a language is so god damn based. Thanks Liva for pushing people in the right direction with these videos.
I remember trying to really learn Japanese about 12 years ago. I tried again every couple years maybe, but never got far. The sheer amount of time to reach fluency is off putting. If I had pushed through and stuck with it though, I'd probably be fluent by now. A lot of the vocab I learnt back then has still stuck with me and I still know how to write several kanji. I've recently started up again, using duolingo. I'll try out some of the other sources you've shown too. I feel the motivation to learn it again now is more out of just being ABLE to speak/read/write it. To engage with online Japanese people and communities and that. Maybe visit Japan one day like I've always wanted and actually be able to speak the language and navigate the countries signs. I'm also going to tackle French at some point.
I learned English by reading and listening content from easy to hard. Now I completely understand your video. Recently I started to learn Japanese by using the same method. I hope it'll work.
As I learned most of the languages I am good in via immersion, I was curious on whether the traditional method would work for me (it failed for English, somehow, but being thrown into an environment where I was forced to speak English was basically the solution) I loved this documentary!
As a Russian, I'd rather learn Japanese than Russian too honestly (which i'm currently doing). Whenever I stop to actually think about the grammar in Russian, I realize how messed up the language is lmao
when it comes to listening on youtube videos there is easy work around. Go to the speed setting and set it just below average "normal speed". It will help alot. I noticed that natives vs non natives dont speak the same. They either speak super accent or simplify it by speaking faster. Which they dont know they are doing it, they just do it lol spanish is the same way.
I am in the middle of exams right now so I am spending all day studying, Japanese sounds like a nice refresher compared to 8 hours of essays and math everyday 😅
Too good of a video not to sub to you for. And you have some natural humor, love it I started about 6 months ago, I focused strictly on the conversational side. I have some idea of how to read it but can't write it at all. Figured if I want to visit Japan one day I should focus first on speaking it to some degree
It's actually epic how much your learning skillz overall and language proficiency have grown/evolved over the years, i'm very glad i could follow and see you growing for more than a year now, i think. Your motivation also surprises me a lot. I live in the Urals region of Russia, fell in love with estonia and estonian(this is how i found out about your channel lol) 4 years ago by now, but i still couldn't quite hold myself to consistent learning. And now i'm studying mandarin in uni so i'm not even brave enough to learn any other language in parallel with mandarin, at least for now lol You still inspire me to self-study more, though, thx :D
I'm curious to see how you studied Russian at school as I'm Russian myself. We're learning English at school as well, but immersion experience makes up I'd say 60% of my language knowledge: through watching videos like this and playing games. Such a high quality content deserves way more views!
