I remember trying to learn how to whistle! took me ages to get it and the funny thing is, I cracked how to whistle while explaining my friend how it should work in theory 😂 and I remember getting lightheaded while I kept on trying

I was trying at the same time as you and got it to work pretty quick. I then felt bad for the neighbours and will have to try in a different room 😂. I’ve always wanted to do it because my grandad is a farmer and uses it all the time!

I never managed to find the spot to do this, but while trying, I learned to do it without the fingers. Basically I fold my tongue against my upper lip, and I guess the air flows through a gap in the middle. Glad I learned it that way, then I never have to put my dirty fingers in my mouth, and it's also hands free.

You can also a do a similar loud whistle hands free (not the regular round lip whistle). Can be really loud as well. Basically the one Dr. Cox does.

Way to go man! It’s a good life skill to have. I originally learned the four finger “pistol” method and then ended up learning the one handed taxi whistle (that one takes more practice I think but you can get louder with that one). Took me a good amount of practice to get as loud as I can but it’s possible. Keep at it!

Here's a bit of auditory science. It has been proven that the loudest tones travel to the side of your mouth when whistling or singing. If you turn you head 45 degrees to the microphone and stand the same distance away both behind and to the side of the phone you should get aa louder result. (This comes from years of singing on stage and in choirs.)

I watched this video and it inspired me to learn how to whistle. 6 months after I watched I can whistle so loud you could hear me from 2 blocks away!

I remember my Dad using this whistle when I was younger and it was seriously deafening... One of those sounds that makes you lose hearing for a little while.

Next, to get louder and higher in pitch, it’s all about air volume and air speed. When people are learning (and what you experienced) is that the initial successful sounds they make are lower in pitch than what they are expecting, because they are blowing at a pretty low air speed - not much more than regular breathing. Just like with new brass instrument players, people always seem to underestimate the amount of energy and effort it takes to blow fast air that could either make a loud whistle or high notes on a trumpet. Imagine trying to blow out a candle that’s 30 feet away.

I learned this when I was a kid playing soccer, never did the flipped back tongue thing? I always used the tip of my tongue on the bottom of the end where my fingers meet and it's a lot less controllable but it definitely was insanely loud (it makes your ears ring pretty bad) But I couldn't do it for years because at some point I went through a phase and I had these snakebite piercings. But yeah I totally want to learn dr. Cox his hands-free whistle

I remember learning to do this, and I got it in February 2023. But, it was only yesterday when I mastered it, because that was when I finally learned to change the pitch!

I have a really loud whistle, and it’s just a normal whistle, I can’t do the finger whistles. I can safely say without a doubt, that it’s lung capacity and strength that causes the high pitch, and it doesn’t actually have anything to do with technique. This is coming from someone who couldn’t even normally whistle till he was 16.

Dude try the hand whistle. Its basically the same thing as what you did with the bottle, but obviously youll be using just your hands. The initial sound is like a train, but you can progress to the point where it sounds like a bird call!

I can whistle extremely loud with a piece of plastic. My preferred piece of plastic is tearing the label off of a cheap water bottle and using the label to whistle.

There’s another whistle method that is way louder than both of those whistles combined but i forgot what it was called

So I learned how to whistle like this a few weeks ago but I saw little practical use for it. That was until today. My brother was going out to the gym but forgot to take the house keys. He was already a bit far away for my voice to reach him, so I tried the one handed whistle to draw his attention (for context, we live in a small, a bit cramped gated community). I successfully drew his attention, at the cost of making like 2-3 small kids wake up from their naps and some of the dogs to start barking. So anyways how is your day going dudes.

I use my thumb and index finger to form the ok sign, you have to leave your lips open just a little when you place the fingers over your tongue, then blow. I can do it really, really loud! Careful around your dogs and cats, or people being too close, it can hurt their ears.

Fun Fact I learned this skill in 5 days

Make a shh sound and pull the tongue backwards - imitation brake squeal. Practice making it more explosively with full chest of air.

I can wolf whistle just by regular whistling .. technically I’m not sure what that would be called lol but it’s ear piercingly loud. You basically just regularly whistle but push the air out faster and harder

so i learned to finger whistle with my fingers without your help i practiced every day and did it then i learned to do it with middle fingers (currently learning the cap/ok sign whistle)

i got the 2 hand whistle within 15 minutes just a couple hours ago from seeing a yt videos and learning how to do that so quickly and esaily made my day (im gunna start whistling at school and make ppl go def.)

it actually pretty easy all you have to do is put your hands in a diamond shape and push back your toung and then breathe with your chest not with your throat or how you regularly whistle and then just do it you should get it i tryed for about 2 minutes and got it.

On the two handed method it only took me about little less or more than 10 minutes. It’s on the low side of notes though.

There’s actually a way to whistle even louder then that a way u could probably break 130 it’s it’s even easier to do
