i think the tan color of the first house is a must for joshua tree. i’m not too much of a fan of the pop of color idea, i feel like it’s just not the vibe for the area
Before you go any further with these plans, have a couple of contractors and/or structural engineers look at them. As drawn this house will be costly. A builder looks at a house with different perspective. Designers look at projects without much concern for how things actually need to be constructed. What looks good on paper could turn out to be a real nightmare when it comes to building it. Also, watch your budget very very closely. In the area you are building you don't want to be too heavily invested.
This is great advice. I paid $6000 to have architects do initial drafts for my remodel w the idea my budget was $100k. When they submitted the material list and simple drafts to a contractor, the bid was $450k! It seemed the architects had no concept of cost of their designs. The guy, Rob, has done lots of builds and Shelby has the Palm Springs experience so I'm sure they are bracing for any potential sticker shock
Labor costs, material costs, codes, regulations, etc. vary widely from place to place. Something that might cost $80k in India will cost a bunch more in California. So, an international designer may have no idea about what a particular design will cost in the United States. I appreciate the videos and may use Fiverr, but there are a lot of steps to designing something and hopefully Shelby will include everything structural, mechanical, and practical in subsequent videos.
I love the first one with the sand colored paint. The white exterior would get dirty from wind and rain. The tan color fits in with the surroundings. Great rendering too!
This was so cool! I agree with Rob on the living room seating. If I am booking a 4 bedroom house for 8 people, I would like the living area to have space for all 8 people to hang out together.
I love the tan/sand color for the exterior too Shelby. The white with colored trim like Rob was talking about would be better for a Palm Springs home. It's a beautifully designed house!
Please go with the tan color that blends in with the natural beauty of the landscape! Not only will that be aesthetically pleasing, you won't have to clean dust/dirt from the exterior as frequently as a white house in the desert.
I love the first design..I have incurred so much losses trading on my own....I trade well on demo but I think the real market is manipulated.... Can anyone help me out or at least tell me what I'm doing wrong?
I strongly advise you against self trading, it's really dangerous and had brought so many investors down, you need someone with the knowledge and strategies, someone dedicated to the crypto currency market business, and I will strongly recommend expert, Mr Nicholas
You have huge window openings on the east west and south elevations that will make this building very expensive to cool. An architect that understands passive design principals could reduce this buildings energy usage by up to 80%. If you do the math, this is a huge savings over the life of the building in a desert environment.
Love this video on so many levels! The quality of your videos are so nice and I think your voiceovers are so professional. It's so cool how you took your original basic vision sketch and used the Fiverr designers to give you so many realistic examples for your project. Very educational how you showed the process!
That last pic keeps the vision totally alive..beautifully crisp, clean, bright and timeless. Focal seating centering the pool creates a completely useful vantage point capturing most of the structure and view. Leaves a feeling of clean contemporary, concrete freshness dotted only by the color of a magnificently positioned sea blue pool that becomes a highly remarkable contrast to the dryness of the landscape. Add daiquiris for intense color interest near vibrant yellow pillows and you want to be there! Change drinks out to a deep sangria burgundy clipped with lemon and your in chill land. Beau
I love the first design with the tan exterior. I actually also love the square tiles and kitchen design in the third one- I notice on The Local Project and other high end architecture pages, square tiles seem to be used and it looks very timeless
I got a 2 year degree for architecture in 1980, the computer software for plans and 3d renders is amazing now. To keep costs down, maybe make all the rooms 10 feet wide, so the boards or trusses do not have to be as strong as for wider rooms. Making rooms 20 feet long is not near as expensive if they are 10 feet wide. Maybe one roof beam between the kitchen and dining room for 20 feet wide here.
Hi Shelby! The first one is my favorite, seamlessly gorgeous!!!!! The colors, finishings, and the hat on the chair of the master bdrm. I'd move right in!! Love ya!! 💕💕
The first one with tan exterior was the best for the location. Much like Sedona, AZ, blending into the landscape is definitely a good thing to do. The render was amazing.
The first one is amazing!!!! The colours are the best. It looks so good. White would not stay white for very long in the desert. Plus, the natural colours look so much better.
Yes!!!!! The first one is SUPER-COOL!!!! And, I think a “Desert Classic” that feels high-end, with some of the elements from the other renderings added. Shelby… I pray for you, your Sis, family and all your contacts for continued success!!!! You have inspired me with your stories 👌🏾✨
3:56 My jaw dropped when I saw the 3D rendering. I couldn’t see your vision in the blueprint, I wasn’t feeling it but now its beautifully laid out for one to see! This is why people get out of bed in the morning and I couldn’t wait to see it come to life. If anything, it enhances the empty lot you bought and its going to be a lot of money and work. Assuming you move forward with it, I look forward to seeing it get done in the future. Shelby, my congratulations on the reveal!
The first one is stunning. I love the desert colors. With sand storms on 5 acresI think white has a higher upkeep. The color of that house with the desert surrounding was perfection. There used to be a huge white blow up snowman by the in-n-out burger in Palm Desert. They’d put it up at the beginning of November and it was filthy and grey by thanksgiving 😂😂😂
Shelby, I love the U-Shaped building design! Contact a Construction Company or Contractor; that has built theses types of homes before. The cost of materials has tripled and you may end up spending over $1.5 Mil. Taxes and material cost is pricey in California! Still, so proud of you and I can't wait to see it being built! 👏
The 3D walkthrough was so great! Def my favorite one and for sure the most worth it render for its price. Even the finishes and colors were on spot with the joshua tree setting.
I wonder with the water crisis going on. Could the pool be forbidden to be filled in the future. I'm going to think. This new home will have the same problem of just about zero airb&b rentals income during the hot summer months.
Really like the 3D rendering! So cool. The natural color fits so nice with the landscape.

Love the fist one, having wood beams outside above the bar area would add beautiful texture as well as shade and would tie in the wood siding at the front of the house.
Amazing! I would have thought you would want deep eaves on the roof in the desert so that the sun isn't streaming into the rooms and heating the place up.
you should consider adding a Baja shelf with umbrellas and body fit seating loungers (they are basically curved long chairs inside the Baja shelf partially submerged) would suit the vibe of the place especially considering its a desert and would also look good for pictures
Wow this channel was always great but Shelby has taken things to the next level in the last several months. What a fantastic video. Can't wait to see how this house unfolds.
Interesting for sure. Puts a real challenge on the builder/contractor to "make it happen" like the video/design walkthrough. Seems like cheap money for some wicked good/cool designs!
The last one was 500 bucks for a single picture design. If this teaches me anything it’d be that paying more for sth doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s better.
3-D animated walk-through makes visualizing the finished project a lot better instead of just pictures. Best wishes on your project. Did you look into pool solar water heaters?
Love this 😍 The first video rendering is definitely the best 👍 the bench in the carport between the columns is such a good idea. Also the tan exterior is the way to go. I would make a few adjustments to the floor plan however. The secondary entrance from the carport leading to the living space by the guest bath would be so much better if it was widened to 5 or 6 feet. Also this is the perfect place to create a line of vision if a floor to ceiling window was added on the opposite wall by the kitchen exactly in line with this entrance. The wall for the TV in the living room is like a blind spot blocking out the view to the pool and deck from the living room. I understand why it is this way but I think the TV would be better on the wall by the main entrance door so that it's not the main focus. The focus should be looking out to the pool - not a TV wall. Also would definitely have a bathroom/ shower that has a door from the pool area. Think of Emma chamberlains pool bathroom. I think continuing with the theme of corner windows I would flip the bath tub and shower in the primary bath so that the bath could benefit from a corner window. The window above the kitchen bench could also be raised so it's more eye level and your focus is more on the sky than the ground. The dining corner with the corner window I would pull this window in from the kitchen side creating another wall by the kitchen for additional storage. Like the house from parasite. I hope you get what I mean.
It's just a rental house! I really don't get why she puts so much effort into this, like just get the cheapest offer you can find from a contractor and get the house built asap so that you can put it on airbnb fast
Shelby, I’m lazy so let me pick y’all’s brains. I saw the video where you itemized the cost of the AirBNB and you were talking about the cost of electricity. You said y’all were going to look into “Solar”!!!! So being in the desert in both places you’re working in, is it possible to heat the pools using “Solar”???? I don’t know but I’ll let you do the digging to educate me!!! Thanks for the incredible advice and videos!!!! This is a lot of fun!!!!
The tan exterior fits perfectly with the Joshua Tree landscape. I like that all the rooms face the pool and that the house has such good flow. Love those architectural angles on the carport and window! It keeps the house from being boxy. Nice work!
That is incredible. Especially the walk through modelling for $350 that is definitely the best value for money as it takes a lot of effort to create those models
The only thing I would change is add a garage back of of your car port. Reason is you pay $60,000 or more for your car and you leave out in the open like that not right protect it.
You should make the windows over the kitchen counter taller. Short windows are my pet peeve. I really like the tan look I think it goes well with the desert vibe, also the modern look of the house.
Is there a way to ensure the pool faces the mountains? Even though the view is better from the rooms looking at the pool, you’d hate to not have the pool have a view of the mountains!
Yeah it's a little claustrophobic in the pool area. Maybe have two pools. The one in the middle for kids, at a shallow depth. And a bigger one outside.
Definitely go with wooden decking around the pool area, much nicer than concrete. Love all the natural features. I would still maybe go with white or something for the outside to stand out more from the dirt and love Rob's idea for pops of colour. That would look great from the road!
Great video Shelby and great to see the design reveal of the Joshua Tree house after months of teasing haha. I do agree, that 3D render was incredible and at a good price too!! Love the actual desert/Joshua Tree touches too that the others didn't.
One of the model photos with the tile floors and counter-tops had the cook-top at the window rather than the kitchen sink at the window. I have never seen that in a home before and would guess that there is some kind of building code restriction against having heat so close windows. The house design is very nice and I like the pool in the middle of the property.
Word of advice: I think you may be falling in love with the tech of the first design. Yes, it is hella dope to see it rendered in 3d and in fact they may even have the model prepped for you in Unreal for you to walk through with a Quest 2. That being said, don't let the shiny tech get in the way. A lot of time the shiny thing in front distracts us and hides away potential flaws and legitimate issues. With all that said, a VR walk through is actually very beneficial. Often times a VR walkthrough helps us finalize design/structural details. It's one thing to put things down in 2d for s build plan but until you physically traverse through the space in 3d or have experience with past designs, some things may seem ok in 2d but when it is "nailed down" you may not like it visually or worse, it becomes integral to a structure that later modifications will give you nightmares had you gone with something else but with less headache. Something to keep in mind as it comes to 3d and VR. :) Looking good though! ;)
Love the first render. But there needs to be more storage in the kitchen. I understand its minimalistic as it's a render, AND it's an airbnb, but If I was living there, definitely need more storage for a pantry or even all your cooking utensils. Thanks for spending money and showing us what's possible through fiverr! Some really talented people out there!
This looks like a lot of work. Hope things go well for you. I'm going to wait until housing crashes and buy a few condo's and townhouses in my area and rent them out to college students. Ever considering buying a condo in another state and renting it to college students. You can charge rental for each room. One of my co-workers says he makes good money buy charging by room and not the entire condo.

Watch your budget like a hawk, many contractors under bid to get a contract and then you end up paying 3x that price. Also, reads your contract and get very familiar with it, you don't want to be stuck with a contractor that says everything you want it out of scope and you need a dozen change orders, have a VERY detailed scope of work in that contract. xx
I see the options shown in the video are about the interior design. It is a highly personal choice. The property is intended for short term rental business. It is a good idea to use the materials that minimize the possibility of damage and maintenance cost. When you have a CA licensed architect on board, you can ask the architect to review the design. Energy is a major expense in the California desert. The architect will be able to design the shape and use the right exterior materials to minimize heat gain in daytime. The depth of roof overhang and using solar panels on the roof or on ground will help to minimize the operational costs. You can figure out the architecture, structure, MEP, construction, . . . of the house before the interior design of the house.
Great designs! Are you considering including a spa with the pool? The reason I’m asking is Joshua Tree gets cold in the winter and you may want an alternative attraction to the pool certain times of year.
So fun to see you go through the design process. As an architect myself it pains me a little bit to see you use Fiverr but seeing the different designs at such an affordable price makes it interesting. Just be careful on the cost since you probably don’t have much guidance on that. I have to admit, the one design from an actual architect is the least competent of the three so maybe I’m eating my words in the end!
I am curious how a wood decking would hold up in the heat of the desert, versus cement. Might be something to look into. Also more windows means more heat coming in, which also means more air conditioning costs. The 1st one is really beautiful though!
Wood shouldn't be an issue if you go for a hardwood... that stuff is essentially organic steel LOL. The windows shouldn't be an issue if they add overhangs - as it stands, this house without ANY overhangs will cost a fortune to cool.
