To learn language you need to speak it. The next best thing is to use media, and note down words you hear often until you start to understand it…. I think I’ll try some German anime :)
German dub sucks ass. They recycle the same 5 untalented voice actors for every anime they dub. German dub back in the day of 90s-2000s anime was peak tho.
@@abyssstrider2547 That's the point I'm making here. There's a difference between a translation and a localization. Translation is raw, and can come off as sounding odd because a joke that would land in Japanese doesn't make any sense or just doesn't land as strong in English. Whereas a localization takes the translation, and alters it slightly to be more natural and that often means changing jokes either entirely or slightly depending on how rough the translation is. And I like it better when a dub team takes the extra step to localize the dialogue to try and illicit the same reaction that line was meant to for a Japanese audience for an American one. Sure there are extremes of localizaton can cause them to change too much of something that is crucial to the story and can cause confusion in understanding to the lore. But in cases like this I think it's the better option.
@@solaire2271 It's just a shame that some particularly vocal localizers have completely destroyed the profession's reputation by not only inserting politics into translations instead of just adapting jokes and references. But also attacking fans who complain about said politics and even boasting about not actually knowing Japanese ... like WTF.
@@metazoxan2I mean you have localisers that make anime for western audiences more funny like kaguya sama narrator and then you have ghost stories which is even more hilarious in the dub.
The context is that a Mandrake (that plant) screams when pulled from the ground, usually causing the death or psychological damage to who pulled it. When the bat flew in, she heard the shriek and got the effects.
@hairglowingkyle4572 one of the main themes of the manga is the need for multiple perspectives. Laios, Chilchuck, Marcille, and Senshi ALL needed each other throughout the journey.
@@Cyberweasel89I read the manga and Marcille was my favorite character from the beginning so I can attest. Marcille's suffering is always a great moment and then that suffering feeds in to make her joyful and badass moments even greater. It's a perfect system honestly.
@@backgroundcharacterj5071 *Well, of course not! You need to get into the higher dimensions where concepts all start blending together like some kind of apocalyptic fruit smoothie slurry if you want stuff that.*
Anime fans give me brain damage. Especially when talking about animation as a whole, I've never seen so many people talk so confidently about things they have no understanding of.
@@masterpills Well, they started with a crucial party member getting eaten sending her allies to safety. That was followed immediately by half the party quitting, and a timer being put on getting back to whatever depth they were on when it happened. Since then, we've gotten context that not even the main characters are death-proof (and have even been killed one-to-multiple times previously, to boot), and, for the time being, they're covering 'shallow' floors that they recognize/have a handle on, approached through fresh eyes of "What's good eatin' around these parts?" (which, reminder, is very much in the vein of mental damage, based upon how freaky the monsters are to begin with) Pending the quality of the adaptation, they'll get to more sweet and sour suffering, soon enough.
That was the whole point of this scene though. She had just heard a mandrake scream, which typically is either fatal or drives you insane. Luckily, she was only in range for the tail end of the scream, so she just got a bit muddled for a few minutes.
I mean two of my favs just got adapted (Delicious in Dungeon and Campfire Cooking), so I can only hope now that Land of the Lustrous season 2 maybe happens
It's really great to see the anime adaptation actually do the manga justice. My friends and I have gotten some bad anime of some of our favorite manga recently so this one is a breath of fresh air.
My only complaint is how dumb the title is, makes it be a bit of a harder sell to people who aren't already weeb-ing out. For comparison, the japanese title was 'Danjon Meshi', literal translation for that would have been 'Dungeon Meal'. This is the same issue that 'Is It Wrong to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon' had a massively better Japanese name of 'DanMachi'
@@zombiexpanda Well, DanMachi is just an appreviation of the full Japanese title, which is more or less the same as the Japanese title. That said, the English title does lose a pun that was in the Japanese title. The Japanese title used the term "romantic encounter," which is a pun on random encounters in RPGs. Also, I think the logic is that "Dungeon Meal" is fairly generic and non-indicative, while "Delicious in Dungeon" has added alliterative appeal.
I'm not sure if the title is a joke or not because she's obviously supposed to have at least temporary brain damage from the Mandrake root, and as far as portraying that is concerned she did a fantastic job.
You mean the guy who wanted people of certain races to only voice characters and then started complaining about it when it happened, demanding the opposite? The *hypocrite?*
@@jpjfrey5673I disagree. To be human is to be the hypocrite sometimes, and I think that after admitting he was wrong and doubling back on his take, it's not fair to keep hating on him. Like, talk of hypocrisy, what about double standards? People aren't infallible by nature, and sometimes people are going to make erroneous takes; what kind of person are you to shun someone who learns from their error and grows past it? And anyways, the perception of his original opinion is also out of line. The context for his opinion is because of discrimination working in the opposite way of modern industry standard, where people with suitable talent but belong to a minority would be discriminated against. The problem was real and to try and fix it wasn't ignoble, but his worldview at the time was incomplete until it was challenged just lately, where he had to realize he was wrong about it. The thing that frustrates me so much is how much a prejudiced narrator can twist a situation into something much worse. Drama creators are truly the worst.
People are saying Emily is a good VA and honestly, she sounds better than a lot of anime dub voice actors I've heard lately. Not all but a lot of anime just haven't had good dubs or just the occasional voice actor who carries the entire thing. Bryce Papenbrook for example was not a good fit for Eren until season 4 when he could use is normal voice whilst both of Sasha's actors were perfect. Then you have Beastars who has a great dub cast.
i’m actually enjoying the dub 😂 i watched the first 2 episodes subbed and it switched by accident in netflix for the 3rd. i never switched it back because i liked it so much
