Also we'll be doing more horror movies and metal documentaries on the Discord too - so come on by. ALSO I thought for sure I picked a song off Chaos A.D but APPARENTLY I didn't SO that's going to be our next album reaction for Sepultura. Love ya and have a great rest of your day!! xoxo
Chaos AD is probably one of my favorite Sepultura albums, I don't think you will be disappointed at all. I honestly loved all of the Max/Iggor Era Sepultura material from Schizophrenia through Roots. Some of the later Sepultura material after Max left is ok, but still will never be able to hold a candle to the albums previously mentioned. They were absolutely on fire at at their peak prior to Max leaving, imo. it's a real shame actually that they couldn't maintain that classic lineup.
That'd be one of the best choices, it surprised me that you jumped Chaos A.D. album when it is classic one by Sepultura (songs like Refuse/Resist and Territory are classic in live performances), hope you make that one 'cause it really rocks (and makes the perfect transition from Arise to Roots), that being said, you reacted to a band that (I don't wanna say "created") put in the map two different music subgenre, death metal (transitioning to thrash metal) and nü metal, that's why you noticed such a drastic sound change in their music.
In 1990 I went to elementary school, communism just collapsed in Poland and I got a Sepultura album: Beneath the Remains- It's their best album for me so far.
As a brazilian it is a source of pride to have a band from my country that is so big and influential worldwide, especially due to the influence of traditional brazilian genres in Roots. They are one the biggest Slipknot's influences and for the nu metal in general.
First time I went to Rio I saw the Iggor Cavalera clothing store and I asked my host family if that was the same Iggor from Sepultura. They said yes I bought a jacket and some shirts
Still some of the greatest metal ever produced, Arise is in my top 3 albums of all time, I fondly remember being a teenager just losing my mind to these albums. 1). Megadeth - Rust in Peace 2). Sepultura - Arise 3). Death - Symbolic
if you get the chance go see Cavalera in concert. just saw them in Dallas 3 days ago and it is the best old school metal concert I've seen in years. cya
Scott Burns is one of the greatest metal producers of all time, his studio, Morrisound recordings, helped to develop the death metal sound of the 90s. Basically every single band who recorded in that studio became huge.
Dude, seriously, check out Crypta. They've got a real modern twist on the old school combo of Death/Sepultura, but all female, Brazilian contemporary death metal. Crypta is the bees knees! Also, Nervosa is another pretty amazing Brazilian all female metal band worth a listen.
1 arise 2 schizophrenia 3 chaos ad 4 beneath the remains (just because of the production, there is just something off about it for me) 5 everything before schizophrenia Everything else don't matter
@@FirebirdCamaro1220 lol ok bud that album was probably the most groundbreaking metal album of the 90s. Countless bands credit that album with influencing them hugely
Im a "little late" to the discussion, hehe.. but i disagree. I much prefer earlier Sepultura (specifically "Beneath the Remains", and the album featured in this video, "Arise"). In fact i was so terribly disappointed with Chaos A.D after the monster that was "Arise" that it was the last Sepultura album i bought. I've only heard a couple of songs of "Roots", and they were not good. After that i've not heard anything as soon after, the band fell apart (Cavalera's leaving, etc).
'Beneath The Remains' album was recorded during the hot nights of August in Summer '88 in Sao Paulo, with Scott Burns coming down from NY just to be their studio engineer. The budget Roadrunner gave them was so low (8.000 dollars) that they have to record during the night because it was cheaper to rent the studio during night hours, and try to sleep during the day whith outside temperatures of +40ºC, and they survived eating mainly scraps and ham sandwiches in the process. Luckily after the release the band went big worldwide and they started doing well financially.
The version of the song Troops of Doom u reacted is actually on their second album Schizophrenia. They done it firstly on their debut album Morbid Visions and there it had more black and death metal sound, but on Schizophrenia they remade it into a thrash song.
Troops of Doom wasn't on the original US Release of Schizophrenia. It was added as a re-recorded bonus track (track 10) when the album was re-issued in 1990. The lineup was different. If I'm not mistaken, This was Andreas Kisser's first album with Sepultura.
Part of the explanation for Max Cavallera's vocal style is that the band is from Brazil, and so with Portuguese being their native language, the process was to write it, then translate to English for the recording.
Another great band from Brazil is Angra. It's a Power Metal band, a genre that is more melodic and have some huge influence of neoclassical music. Standouts tracks are Carry On, Angels Cry, Heroes of Sand, Rebirth and Temple of Hate.
Curious fact: Kiko Loureiro, one of the former members of Angra, is in Megadeth as the lead guitarist since 2015, and won with their crew mates the first Grammy of Megadeth for Distopia!
You missed one between Morbid Visions and Beneath the Remains. 1987's Schizophrenia. This album was my introduction to Sepultura and holds a special place to me. I especially love this one called "Inquisition Symphony". It was an instrumental that starts off with a Call of Kthulhu vibe but then gets heavy as hell! Underrated album.
She didn't miss it.. this version of Troops of Doom is from Schizophrenia album. Morbid Visions version sounds very different and the sound quality is horrible. Agreed on that Schizophrenia is underrated. It has some total bangers on it. Have you heard Inquisition Symphony played by Apocalyptica? Look it up. Just 4 cellos and drums. It's insane.
@@ravensoulmetal8466 Still holds up as one of the greatest live performances, ever captured. I'm so glad it's on RU-vid since I couldn't watch my VHS tape of it for years.
50:20 "[the manager] is his wife... ok, hopefully that works out..." Indeed :) Gloria was the main reason why Max eventually left the band. Other members (including Max's brother - drummer Igor) requested the change of the manager and Max responded by leaving the band. Igor left the band much much later, and rejoined with his brother in Cavalera Conspiracy.
The look says it all!! I was handed a cassette copy of Arise in 1991 immediately changed my life. A year has passed hopefully you got to Cavalera Conspiracy? Welcome to the tribe kid 🤘👌👍
If you wanna check out another Brazilian thrash band similar to Sepultura, look up Sarcofago. They briefly had a rivalry with Sepultura, probably because their lead singer was Sepultura's original lead singer. But their sound, as well as their early imagery, was very influential to death metal and the 2nd wave of black metal. Bands like Slayer, Sepultura, Possessed, Kreator, and Sodom all had influences on death metal and black metal, but Sarcofago's influence is more obvious.
I like to split their discography by duo albums, because share a lot of elements and always change drastically on the next duo: Morbids Visions/Schizophrenia(Black/Death Metal), Beneath the Remains/Arise(Thrash/Groove Metal), Chaos AD/Roots(Groove/Nu Metal), Against/Nation(more hardcore oriented), Roorback/Dante/A-Lex(Back to thrash, but keeping with some hardcore), Kairos/The Mediator(Experimentation), Machine Messiah/Quadra(added some prog-ish and symphonic). Actually, the last two albuns are pretty good: 'Machine Messiah' and 'Quadra'. I recommended it.
The Arise album tour was my first ever metal show and I haven't looked back. Totally amazing. And I got to see the Cavalera brothers tour 2 years ago for the 30th anniversary and they were just as brutal
Nice reviews, Kaiya. Good work! :) I've listened to Sepultura over 30 years, and it is great to see the younger generation get in to this music and appreciate it.
On the CD of Arise, “Dead Embryonic Cells” starts immediately following “Arise”, there’s only a very quick pause of less than a second. Whatever platform you’re listening to didn’t do the transition justice. Believe it or not, they play the songs faster live. It’s ridiculous.
Great vid! Sepultura rules. A pity you didn't do anything from the Chaos AD album (my fav). Some absolute classics on there (Territory, Biotech is Godzilla, Refuse/Resist, Slave New World, Propaganda to name a few).
If you liked Sepultura you definitively have to watch the entire "Barcelona under siege" 1991 concert... its freaking amazing and powerful. Another band that i would like to suggest you is Exodus: they're like the first thrash metal band alongside Metallica and they definitively crush!! Five exodus songs: Deathamphetamine, Blacklist, The Toxic Waltz, Bonded by Blood and the Strike of the Beast (for this song i strongly recommend the live video from Exodus live at Wacken 2008)
I'm glad you've made one heavy video from Sepultura. Your reaction on this one is amazing and pleasurable in your own way. Greetings from Brazil, sweetheart!
Arise is a METAL MASTERPIECE from start to finish. Kaiya I would love for you to review Cannibal Corpse one day, amazing death metal band. Grew up listening to all these bands you are reviewing and I love your passion for this music from the past, this was the pinnacle era of metal 🤘🏻
The version of Troops of Doom you listened to is actually a re-recording they did in 1990 (between Beneath the Remains and Arise). The original is actually a lot more raw, believe it or not. They added the intro on the second version. Also, the covers for Beneath the Remains, Arise and Chaos AD we’re done by the fantasy artist Michael Whelan. Nightmare in Red is the title of the painting for the Beneath cover. That t-shirt was my go-to through most of high school.
Well! I guess I have to blame Sepultura a lot for me beeing who I became and who I still am musically today. Black/Death metal guitarist for more than 3 decades:) I first heard them back in 1989 or 90 when I got Beneath the Remains on cassette from a friend. I was about 14 years old, and rest is history hehe. I had Metallica albums and other thrash albums before that, but this was something extra. Still today Beneath the Remains is one of my favourite abums. Glad You liked it and great reaction:)))
Dude, a sort of long form reaction video diving into a bands discography and highlighting a track per album-what a good idea. And Sepultura is a favorite!!!
Roots was a revolution in metal music, and it is great album, everything with Max Cavalera was great, and then after Roots, he left the band and he made a new band-Soulfly, first album was in the style of Roots, but everything from Soulfly is great 💪🤘
55:30: "hopefully that works out, I'm assuming it does" - it didn't, it *so* didn't work out that Max and Igor Cavalera didn't talk to each other for decades
It's interesting to hear you comment on the heat, as some of my earliest memories of Sepultura were during a summer in 1990 when a tree had fallen in this yard of the house I was renting and it was the middle of balls hot summer... and we had no other way to get rid of it except to cut it up and burn it so I remember listening to "Beneath The Remains" at full volume at 3:00 in the morning hacking this thing up with a chainsaw and burning it in the fireplace where it was giving us all sweat lodge hallucinations from the hot pervading every pore of our bodies. It was very metal. By the by, it is an interesting note that from a production standpoint the "Beneath The Remains" album was one of the first that ushered in the era of modern thrash and Proto death metal production techniques , with the result being a appeal to a wider market. The engineer, Scott Burns, was one of the very first to really take seriously how to get music that fast recorded in a clean manner where you could really hear all the instruments and the articulation of said performances correctly. As a result bands flooded Morrisound Studios in Florida to get that production sound and between this record, "Tomb of the mutilated "by Cannibal Corpse, and "slowly we rot" from Obituary.. they pretty much set the tone for how death metal was to be recorded for the next 3 to 4 years. There was a glut of everyone's album sort of sounding the Same by the end of that, but initially it was all very exciting. Lastly.. I sent you a message via posting to another video deeper in your catalog here of my opinion on the next crucial full album review it is long overdue for you to take on your metal journey. I'm sure you will find it and I promise you won't disappointed when you hear the mighty king diamonds magnum opus Horror concept masterpiece.. 'Abigail."
I have had the privilege of seeing Sepultura live many times, and yes, they kick ass! In fact, one of my favorite concerts is when played the Arise album in its entirety in a small Rock/Metal bar in São Paulo, Brazil. No matter, what some whiners might tell you about post-Cavalera Sepultura, the "new" line-up is a sight to behold.
@Andy Speaking of whiners. Derrick Green is not awful, far from it. He brings a great energy to his live performances and does a great job with both the new and old material. Which is much more than can be said for Max who is about 20 years past his prime and is just sad to see live, the way he barely plays his guitar.
I think one of the things that made Roots sound so differently than the other albums was because that was the first Sepultura album that Paulo Jr. the bassist ever played on! He didn't play on any of the previous Sepultura albums. Max or Andreas did the pass parts for all the previous albums. They didn't have confidence in Paulo's ability to play well enough. Cheers Imakaiya. I was blown away by your review of Sepultura's music.
I had some doubts regarding your reaction at first, but now I can say you easily point out what Sepultura did the best : riff, percussion, transition. Thanks and keep going
Was at their concert in Adelaide, Australia in 94 on the Chaos tour,. Much moshing, drinking (and some other stuff) ensued. It is still up there as one of the best gigs i have attended, and i have seen hundreds of bands over the years (im old). keep the reactions coming, so many different genres of metal and hard rock for you discover. I kind of envy you !
I saw Supeltura on the bloody roots tour then again a few years later when soulfly came out. Max C. Is a beast, how he could play both sets night after night is beyond me. I was a 80s kid so I got to witness Metal being born from Led to Sabath.... Metal is in my blood, it's my church, my savior, my therapist, my frail grip on sanity. Megadeth, slayer, Anthrax, Slipknot and korn are some of the best concerts I've been to. Love your reactions and wish blessings on you and everyone watching your channel. 🤟
Saw them in high school at the old paramount in NYC (right when Arise album came out) i think they opened for Ministry…can still remember that night it was brutal and people were all bloody by the end , it was awesome.
Roots album was 1996. Roots Of Sepultura was a Best of Sepultura compilation released the same year. Chaos AD is def worth a listen. Max has gone on to do many other projects. Nailbomb, Soulfly, Killer Be Killed, Cavalera Conspiracy. Check them out! 👌
The 80s metal thrash sound is mostly due to low production budgets lol it's not a conscious choice per se. Also band budgets ie gear. Although im sure some bands might have heard an album and were like "let's record ours like that!"
Great vid!! Love Sepultura. Please give Ne Obliviscaris a listen. An Aussie Melodic Progressive Death Metal band with a phenomenal catalogue to choose from. If you like Opeth you will love these guys.
Top 3 Sepultura records: 1.) Schizophrenia 2.) Beneath the Remains 3.) Arise It's worthy to listen full records to hear better how they the development their sound. I like Schizophrenia most coz their sound was on that record very raw, brutal and mean riffs, insane & fantastic solos (tnx to kisser who join the band) and what a lovely drumming. Sound's like Igor is beating few note to bare skull 💀💀💀💀 And it contain one of the best instrumental song ever made, Inquisition Symphony. Beneath and Arise are great albums as well. Chaos AD is last good record from them, even the sound was different than previoysly albums. Top Notch Thrash Metal!! 🤘💀🤟
I disagree with Chaos AD being the last good album, Roots is fucking awesome and when Max left they still did some great stuff (Dante XXI and Machine Messiah for example)
@@reapervich4192 of course this was just my opinion, by listening, everyone will find their own favorite . I've played the Roots record a lot, but it just doesn't kick the same way, for me. I gave a spin to Nation album while back and there was few good tunes. Every now and then I try to also check their newer stuff, but it's been harder to me find any really smash banger there. I think that also proves the point that whichever album you get to know first, if it was Roots or something after, it's easier to like that style if it works for you better and makes u nuts 🙂I have found my corner of their discography, and I think u have too. Cheers!! 🍻
@@Kim_Darkman Yeah, i really like the sound of new Sepultura mainly because i'm from the same region they're from and it's a familiar sound in some kind of way, cheers to you mate!
I'm a huge Sepultura fan and love the classic lineup but the Derrick Green era is criminally underrated (convicted in life, Isolation, manipulation of tragedy, Vandals nest, Apes of God, etc...,)
The Roots album is a masterpiece of Sepultura (bringing the mainly elements from brazilian culture and historical past - even in your video clips). No doubt, it has a high level artistic content. Theses guys deserves all the respect. Greetings from Brazil.
Yessss! Sepultura! I got to see them a few times, and with Pantera as well. Some of the best pits and energy for a live Metal act! The 90's were flooded with some of the best Metal you can get. Keep rockin' girl! Florida is where it's at BTW!
Hi beautiful ❤ Seen Sepultura live twice. 1st time was in California with Helmet & Ministry. Second time was in my homeland of Puerto Rico. They were amazing both times. They truly do not disappoint. Hope all is well in your world. ❤ - Eli
Sepultura en la producción Musical de la época no tiene paralelos, no en Metallica, Slayer, Antrax o Megadeth... Eran contemporáneos pero has allí... No hay justicia para ellos.. una de las bandas que revolucionó el sonido del Metal en la mitad de los 90... Sin duda. Sobre todo tomando en cuenta que no eran anglosajones.
I really I'm enjoying your videos (I've been a metalhead for 20 years now). But, there's something I'd like to recommend you (probably more people already told you this, tho): it's really awesome that you started with Cannibal Corpse, and have done a lot of Thrash and Death metal, and liked it a lot, but, I think you are missing one important part of Metal History, wich is the Iron Maiden/Motörhead/Judas Priest/Saxon (and others) "Era", wich, after Black Sabbath were pioneers and inspiration for all other metal bands that have come after them. If you ask any Metal Band about the bands I'm telling you they will 99% of the times say that were inffluenced by at least one of those 4 bands (and a couple more). I really suggest you to react to at least Iron Maiden (One of the most successful bands in history, even outside metal), Judas Priest and Motörhead. Have a good one!
The Morbid Visions album (first song) was released in 1984 - these vocals come from 15 years old dude (in oryginal version, in this one he's couple years older) =] List was missing songs with heaviest "tribal" influence.
Max left when the time came to renew Gloria, his wife's contract and the rest of the band including his brother didn't want her as the manager any more. Plus her son had just been killed. Iggor was in the band for another 10yrs. The Dante album is 🔥 for drumming. The bonus cd that comes with Roorback is a nice album of covers like Jane's addiction tune and a U2 and Public Enemy covers.
Sepultura Rulezz! I'm happy to see that this national metal treasure never gets forgotten and it is still praised by people around the world. 🇧🇷 Another classic brazilian metal band that emerged simultaneously as Sepultura is Sarcófago. (There is a myth that Sarcófago invented Black Metal because of the lyrics and makeup that later inspired Euronymous with the whole Mayhem aesthetic in the 90s in Norway). Sarcófago were Sepultura's rivals back in the day in Belo Horizonte, but as a wise girl once said: you can get the best of both worlds. \m/
Talk about an evolution in sound indeed! Considering that you skipped Chaos A.D (I recommend Territory, great song), and Roots is, to me and many, the last real Sepultura's record, since Max left after it and he is considered to be the heart and soul if the band, later to reunite with his brother Igor to form Cavalera Conspiracy, which is highly recommend as well! I mean, you could listen to a million bands from Max, his main one right now being Soulfly, he also did Nailbomb, Killer be Killed, and many others.
Saw them in 1994 first time, still a fan of both current Sepultura and the projects of Max and Igor Calvera after they left mid 90s You can hear elements of hardcore punk, thrash metal, groove metal, and dare I say Nu Metal before it existed - I can hear similarities to Slipknots early stuff in one or two songs Epic band, very underrated.
Brilliant, I just bought that album on CD. It was awesome. Applause! I bought it to prep my mind for Sepultura, since I saw them live a couple of weeks ago.
Living about an hour away from Charlotte and about an hour and 25 minutes from Asheville I've seen many metal shows in NC always fun and and always great music.
Roots bloody roots is from the album "Roots", the last album with Max Cavalera as vocalist. After Sepultura he created the band Soulfly ( an amazing band)
First real concert I went to was Sepultura on tour for beneath the remains. I didnt know anything about them. It was a great show. I wish I was not so drunk and stoned that I could remember it better.
51:00 that guitar riff was inspired by a popular instrument used in capoeira here in Brazil, called "berimbau". That's the sound it makes. You can listen to it in the beginning of a song called "Attitude" from the same album.
