Remember when Angel told Buffy what Angelus did to Drusilla? "First I drove her insane. Killed everyone she loved, visited every mental torture on her I could devise. She eventually fled to a convent, and the day she took her holy orders, I turned her into a demon." Or the Master: "He was the most vicious creature I ever met. I miss him." What Angelus is has never been a secret. And yet we're still shocked when he lives up to his reputation.

It's cool that you noticed that he didn't even drink Jenny's blood, most reactors don't. It reminds everyone that Angelus is different. For him it's the torture that turns him on, as we saw in the chase. He wanted her to think she had a chance, then dash those hopes away. Even watching the reactions of the others when they heard the news. It's pretty much the same thing he did to Drusilla.

Yeah the fact that he didn't even feed on her and just broke her neck is so much more traumatic. It wasn't the need or desire to feed that vampires have. Just the pure sadisticness of hurting them emotionally.

Imagine that a mad doctor plans to forcibly perform brain surgery on you to change your personality. You know they have the skill to do it and that they're 100% serious, and that there's no chance in talking them out of it. You also know that the police won't believe or help you. What would you do? Point being, I could see Angelus arguing that he killed Jenny in self-defense, given what she planned to do to him. It was all the other shit (chasing her, setting her up for Giles to find) that was evil.
@stephaniebarker472
@stephaniebarker472 Год назад
Also, I read that Josh did not want Angelus to feed on her because he didn’t want there to be a question in anyone’s mind that she might come back as a vampire. He wanted to make sure that when she was found in Giles’ bed, everyone knew she was really completely dead.

Angelus is no ordinary villain. And Buffy is no ordinary TV series. We've seen much crueler behavior than Angel's, like serial killers or prolonged torture, but Angelus is so methodically, gleefully sadistic. He arranged all those candles and roses with the same care that someone would have if they had done it lovingly. One of the best and worst episodes of television you will ever see.

Vampires usually kill to feed. Angelus kills because its an art form for him. Toying with victims, psychological terror, arranging victim bodies to inflict more of the harm to others, etc. With Jenny he most likely took time to clear the school building, to lock all doors as to leave her only specific direction she can run to, etc. And then he placed the body in Giles apartment, set up the candles, sat down and drew the corpse. As mentioned in the show before, with Drusilla he stalked her for possibly months if not years, killing every single person she knew, emotionally and psychologically torturing her till he turned her into a vampire on the day she was about to become a nun. And then he moved on till he eventually encountered a target with family that could actually fight back (the romani clan that cursed him). With Angelus, the scariest part is not the superpowered monster - its the mind of a man who has perfected murder.

Not a drop of blood and the horror is almost greater than be processed. But that wasn't the worst. Angelus' slow smile of sheer relish at the grief of Buffy and Willow is malice personified. He carefully placed everything in motion and was waiting for the denouement ahead of time. This is the sick-making, hopelessly despairing type of evil that quails the heart. As a police officer I've seen and heard dreadful things. Sex crimes that stagger the mind, audio of the pleading shrieks of serial killer torture victims and hundreds of violent deaths. This evokes those feelings more than any other bit of cinema.

Personally, I like when reactors pause for a bit to give themselves time to process a big development in the story. Shows that originally aired on television (as opposed to streaming services) were written with processing time planned via commercial breaks. So when this first aired, Angel snapping Jenny's neck was immediately followed by a commercial break--IOW time for the audience to process. I have seen too many reactors just barrel right through into the next scene, and it ruins the experience for us and them because instead of absorbing and processing that Angel just killed Jenny, they're distractedly listening to funny lines between Willow and Giles. So don't ever apologize for pausing :) Love your reactions! Thanks for sharing with us :D

This episode is so powerful and does an amazing job at portraying how sadistic Angelus is. Firstly that he breaks Jenny's neck - he doesn't drink her blood. He doesn't get anything from it other than the pleasure of killing her and watching the devastation it inflicts on Buffy, Giles and the scoobies (which you see from his smile as he watches Buffy and Willow find out). And the whole set up at Giles' apartment - the time and planning he would have to put in to setting that up in order to inflict the most pain possible. Imagine how traumatic that must be for Giles! If I found any body in bed I would never be able to sleep in it again, let alone the body of someone you loved. It's just heart-breaking. I always wonder though....why is Giles not immediately arrested?!

Matthew Kaufman Your commentary is very insightful - I’ve seen the show a million times but love hearing what you have to say. I loved how you picked up on the pride Angelus takes on his cruelty. He wants to be the worst

We warned you. We told you things were going to get good. It really is incredible considering how this show starts out (insect substitute teacher, robot internet stalker, phallic snake demon), compared to what it becomes. This is still only the beginning Sofie. Also, one of the reasons I love reactors. I've seen this episode at least 20 times. I never noticed the juxtaposition of what Giles tells Buffy at the beginning of the episode vs what he does at the end.

This episode wrecked me when it first aired. Cemented my opinion that Joss Whedon was an evil genius. When the news about Whedon started to come out it really didn't seem surprising.

You uploaded this almost 23 years to the day, it premiered on February 24, 1998. I was 8 years old at the time and devastated. I adored Jenny and I think that this was the first major death in a series for me (other than soap operas which I've been watching since I was born). I had never seen a primetime series do this to someone I loved. As an adult, this is one of my favorite episodes because it shows the true nature of Angelus and how dark this series can be. It's a beautifully done episode.

I can't imagine what it would have felt like to watch this at 8 years old. And it's even worse if Jenny is one of your favorite characters.

No villain ever lives up to how personally cruel Angelus is.

Remember when Angel told Buffy he systematically drove Drusilla insane by taking everything she had away from her... Kind of see a pattern yet?

I never picked up on this until this watch through or heard anyone else mention it, but evidently Angelus was stalking Jenny and overheard the conversation between Giles and Jenny, which makes it make more sense why he staged Jenny at Gile's house because that's the last thing they said to eachother is they would meet up at Gile's house. I always assumed Angel put Jenny there not only to upset Giles but to guilt trip him and also frame him for her murder in a way.

I just stumbled onto your channel and as soon as I saw you are doing Buffy reactions I immediately had to see how you responded to this episode. Believe me, those of us who saw this on its first showing were just as stunned and overwhelmed as you. Great reaction! (Going back now to look at more of your Buffy reactions)

And the episode that changes the series arrived ... I did not see it the same again. I hated the chapter and I loved it. I enjoyed watching David play Angelus but I missed Angel. Two so different personalities in the same body. It made me want to go through the screen and rip Angelus's head off but then I thought he was also Angel and he held me back haha. You still have a lot to see ... Enjoy because incredible moments come and that will make you cry. What a joy about James Master ... to continue !!!!

Little side note; Angelus was the first to kill a scooby gang member. Buffy died first with the master but came back.

This episode was done the way that it was, to show that Angel is gone and the monster that murdered Jenny Calendar, that's Angelus. Also, how not just evil Angelus, how much pleasure he takes in causing misery to others, to him creating Pain is like his Art.

Angelus is pretty much as sadistic a character as has ever been created. He's both a literal AND an emotional vampire, he feeds off both blood and terror. As emotional as this show has been leading up to this, with this episode, one comes to see that everything before now was just emotional jabs, whereas here it's like getting hit in the gut with a flaming baseball bat.
