Solo and Narrative Co-op games, which can be played solo, are two great categories to review. Getting a game with others is not always possible and the soon to be dark, cold, and snowy months will soon be upon us, which makes it more difficult to find an opponent to play against. In the winter I would rather get my folding 4'x4' table out in the living room in front of the fire with an old movie playing in the background and the cat on the nearby chair as referee. The cat gets its own set of foam dice that I chuck along the floor that she loves to chase. I recently purchased "When Nightmares Come: An Investigative Wargame of Supernatural Horror (Osprey Wargames)" -- I plan to use some miniatures from some of my board games as proxies for the game. Specifically, Cthulhu Death May Die.
@WhatsUpGazpacho

cat dice sounds like and excellent idea. And yes, the cold months can make it harder to get games in across town. You might like to try out D-Day Paratroopers: Behind the Atlantic Wall on WargameVault. It’s a solo skirmish miniatures game that takes place on the 6th June 1944 and it’s only $5. You play as a US Paratrooper landing in Normandy in the early hours and you have to destroy the guns overlooking Omaha and Utah beaches. To do that you must link up with more Paratroopers, gather intel on your whereabouts, potentially be able to get to your designated muster point all the while fighting your way through groups of procedurally generated enemy forces. Utilize the famous Cricket when you detect soldiers. Will the reply with a Cricket of their own, or does it immediately devolve into a firefight there and then? Play a campaign that takes you across Normandy to your Primary Objective while you fight enemy soldiers and their support weapons and vehicles such as staff cars, half-tracks and even tanks. Roll on random event tables to add variety to your games. You can find friendly paratroopers caught in trees, additional enemy combatants or even have an aircraft come crashing down to earth in a ball of fire. D-Day Paratroopers: Behind the Atlantic Wall is a miniatures agnostic game and while it is set in World War 2, you could take the rules and use them to fight across an alien planet or behind lines of renegades. The only limit is your imagination. PLUS additional settings will be added. D-Day Paratroopers: Behind the Atlantic Wall is in it’s ZEROth edition. When you make your purchase, you get to play the game right away and be the first to get an email when a new updated version releases. Check it out!

The good news is that they're currently beta testing solo rules for Alpha Strike, so that Battletech AS box listed, which does specifically have mechs for two factions in it, will be a great get for solo play when it hits. The current operating name is Battletech Aces, and the experimental rules are in the hands of the Mercenaries Kickstarter backers as I type this.

I've seen Cyberpunk RED: combat zone going for 89. I bought this game because the artwork caught my attention and so far, it is my game of the year. Not only a good starter set, it's the best introduction to war (skirmish) games. I was able to play this game with my son, wife and my friends that are usually not into wargaming and they had fun. My friend even sked me the other day to play again, that's a first! The way it is designed makes it easy to start playing. The only downside for me was that the models quality is not excellent comming from 40k/killteam. And if some people a not into building models, there is a new variation comming: edgerunners that will come with standees and should be even cheaper I guess(hope).

I'm a massive advocate for Warhammer Underworlds (it's GW's best game by far), the 2023 starter has two competitive teams out of the box with a lot of potential for growth. It's $63, which is surprisingly cheap for the amount of potential you get. I'll also add, the game is a lot less "buy everything" since the new rule format. You can buy one or two supplements for $30-45, and it's just a really great game and I want everyone to play it.

TTCombat in the UK have 2 Starter sets (Technically a 2 player starter £65 and a 2 player Intro £35) which have minis, rules, tokens, dice, playmat, measuring sticks, 3d cardboard buildings and Parkour and Dagon, plus the 2 sets don't repeat any models but have the same 2 factions so can be used together. They also recently launched Half Tilt, a halfling jousting game with MDF terrain for around £45. I think these qualify for your under $100, depending on how stupid our respective governments get. The minis are all resin. This is the company that also makes Dropzone Commander (10mm sci-fi), Dropfleet Commander (space battles) and Rumbleslam (Fantasy wrestling) all of which I think come in on or around your $100 range.

Worth mentioning about the Alpha Strike box: the minis are all usable for Classic BattleTech. Not only that, but two people splitting the Alpha Strike box will each have full armies. This week they did a great 2-part arc in 2000 AD and their monthly Megazine and next week (and next month for the Megazine) is the start of an all new run.

I LOVE the Alpha Strike "starter" set and i'm floored that you never played the system! I am like you in that i dislike the hexes in Classic BattleTech and i don't care much for the crunch in it. Alpha Strike, while much simpler, is intended to be faster and more "scoped out" than classic. You tend to play with 7-10 models per side as opposed to 4 on 4 in Classic, and you aren't staring at charts upon charts most of the game. in fact, if you memorize the critical hit chart and how to calculate your target numbers, you don't need to really look at any charts while playing! That being said, i am very interested in that $45 Steel Rift set. That's a great price for a gift, too!

@@tabletopminions the game still works great at 4 on 4! I definitely started there when I first played and had a blast. I think the intro scenario in the AS box is a 2v4 and then the second scenario is a 5v8 using all 13 models. However, I think they add too much too fast for someone's second game, and I usually recommend ignoring the formation bonuses they tell you to use. That being said, once your more comfortable with the rules, your preference for smaller unit count will give you more headroom to add in interesting rules like formation bonuses and special command abilities to add more personality to each uniit. I like to say that while AS doesn't have much mech customization, you can customize the rules of the game itself instead. You can really tune it to the level of detail that you prefer. While I like to be competitive, the game shines in narrative/campaign play.

Also, while non-traditional, Heroclix (I consider it a competitive/collectible skirmish game) has many starter sets below $75 - usually a new one drops every year or so for Marvel. If done right, another $25 easily expands that army with ebay lots or "Fast Forces" that offer 6 figure complete armies. Also the movement and attack measuring is very much like the Halo game you mentioned, utilizing squares but measuring model to model for line of sight.

Bonefields! It's a small set coming in at somewhere between like $70-$80 for some very quaint dwarf and goblin skeletons and necromancers and vampires. It's a small ruleset that lets you toss kind of whatever models you want at the game, but it gives you enough to play with right away in the two-player starter. It's a small skirmish game where you go about summoning your Skelly Bois to the field to duke it out, with a little bit of resource management to accommodate summoning or buffing. Perfect kind of game to throw some scatter terrain on a green flock mat and reminisce about the old days. Sold through Hayland Terrain. The models are metal pours that are likely hand-poured, but still great quality. Bonus, it'll give you some fun models for use in Deth Wizards.

Gaslands. Single rule book currently o amazon for $20. Need a minimum of five 6 sided dice, it's best to have more, and print off the move templates found in the rule book. That's it! Very easy to play and very quick to learn. Oops, you will need to get a Hotwheel or Matchbox style of toy car, at least 1 per person. I like using 3x5 cards for the "character sheet" but you can print them out of the book.

Another nice thing about Alpha Strike is the time it takes to finish a game. Playing the base rules limits you to a lance at most if you want the game to end the same day. Alpha Strike rules you can play a company or larger within a day. It also makes playing combined arms (mechs, vehicles, and infantry) a lot faster as well.

Flashpoint isn't actually out yet. Pre-orders have yet to be delivered. Gonna assume you only actually have a box because they sent it to you or gave you one at Adepticon or Gen Con (sorry, I am not sure which one), I know they have some early copies for sale there and gave some out to folks. It still doesn't have a fixed release date, being given as Autumn, but Amazon has a mid-November date listed that is likely incorrect, because they usually are. lol Edit: Also, the Sylvester Stallone Dredd movie may not have been very loyal to the material, but it DID give us a great behind the scene clip of Rob Sneider falling down a flight of stairs.

I know you are not big on historicals, but the Blood & Plunder Blackbeard vs Maynard 2 player starter is a great deal at $99. 24 multi part sailors, Blackbeard, Lt. Maynard, 2 multi part plastic sloops that can be built as balandra or Bremuda sloops, dice, cardboard tokens, card board ruler, cardboard 2D terrain, paper reversable play mat for land and sea (I took mine to staples and got it laminated to make it more durable), and rule book. Some folks do theirs up as ghost pirates, if you want a less historical flavour. Also works great as a single player starter, giving you to ship options and a decent sized crew.

I have all the 2020 miniatures and Alpha Strike has only 1 or 2 mechs that are not in my collection, and I am capable of making my own cardboard dioramas, as I have the art skills.

Walking dead from Mantic soon to be back available. Think the starter set I got from them was £35 at UK games expo. Really good game and complete starter set.

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but I would recommend Clash of Steel from Gale Force Nine. About $80 and you get a bunch of tanks... Big win all around

Great video. I would love to see a solo play video as well. There are also a host of miniature agnostic games which tend to fall well below the $100 mark, often even below $50.

More than the exact price I like to see the set is actually complete. At minimum it must have sufficient quantities of necessary game components like cards, tokens and special dice. For the models it should have enough for two legal playable forces. They can be small and basic, but they should be legal. I hate those sampler forces that are the just to reach the basic rules but are missing mandatory units or minimums. Typically you can only really get this with skirmish games. With army games the included forces seem to always be cut down samplers.

Cyberpunk Combat Zone by Monster Fight Club. The new starter will be $100, the first version is $120 but with discounts comes in around $100. Great action system that also tracks damage.

thanks uncle for putting halo and fallout games under my radar, they look amazing i would recomend to all folks here who have miniatures but dont have rules for them, to try the 2000AD games from Warlord, they are more than a skirmish game because each set has a rulebook to create your unique characters and equip them, as follows Judge Dredd Set: allows you to create cyberpunk esque characters (which means you can use necromunda minis there), ABC WARRIORS: allows you to bring robots to fray and the one i like the most, Slaine Miniatures game: which is somesort of celtic hulk, allows you to use any fantasy medieval minis to skirmish, equip them and yes, i recomend you this one the most uncle adam

Dropzone Commander by TT Combat is £45 or roughly $60. It’s a 10mm sci fi game and the miniatures themselves are amazing. Combined arms and aerial mobility ( everything can be carried by a dropship) are the two key features of the game.
