The sponsorship struggle is real. I really want to put some brands on BLAST for telling us they "don't have the budget" to sponsor my event for Black women over 40, but then they throw a boatload of cash to a white creator with an audience of broke Gen Z / A. It's frustrating and means our events sometimes look more budget than the less diverse events. But I'm a 2-time ROI Summit attendee, and you gave it the right name. My Return On Investment was immediate both years.
I love it. People often ask me why a white guy decided to open his mouth and say I empower Black and Latino (as) entrepreneurs. 11 years ago when I moved to the US the only communities that accepted were Black and Latino communities. And the same thing happened in my business. This is why it’s hard for me to find events that I resonate with. Appreciate what you do!
This was great! I love to hear your back stories. These are extremely encouraging, helpful and insightful. I promised myself I wouldn’t attend another conference unless I am hosting or speaking at it. But your break down and intention has really allowed me to reconsider. Will definitely check out the offer.
Not every space is for everybody and irrespective of anyone setting up spaces for their specific peers, it doesn't prevent us from doing the same. It's 2024, nobody is in our way. European men create things for themselves (rightly so, it's called self-interest), which wouldn't hurt for us to adopt.
I think for conferences that prioritize diversity, it's worth considering redefining what a sponsor looks like. For example, what if the conference was sponsored by a bunch of Black-owned businesses? Or women-owned businesses?
Love your encouragement! I can hardly wait to make you my coach. In addition to RU-vid, are there any free communities that you lead and are available to for me to join prior to joining your paid-for services?
That's so awesome that you funded it with your business with no sponsors. In. Sane. Delta & Coca Cola were usually open to supporting black events so that is strange you couldn't get one.
