A word from someone that nearly lost a finger. NEVER wear a metal ring while working with anything heavy, on equipment or with tools/presses. OR around electrical. Just don't. If you want to wear a ring get one of those silicone ones. It will only take one slip up to either crush your finger or it get snagged on something will deglove the finger. If you don't know what degloving is google it. Not pretty. I was working on my trolling motor batteries and my ring came between the wrench and the other terminal. One spark and it was red hot. 3rd degree burns around my finger, it seared the skin. Then I nearly degloved the finger trying to rip the ring off, while burning my fingers on my other hand. Lesson learned, never again.

Yep I preach this all the time. I always get mixed responses though, some people actually get offended. My dad was strapping down a ladder on top of his truck and he jumped down and his ring got caught on the ladder so all of his body weight hit the ground while his finger was held up on the ladder and by the time he jumped back up his finger was barely hanging on. Thankfully they were able to save it but they had to cut the ring off.

One of the first rules taught in shop work, or any type of manual work, no jewelry of any type, especially rings, watches and necklaces. Seen a guy fall off a short ladder, maybe four feet up, he grabbed a pipe, wedding ring caught on a bolt, almost lost his finger. he was better off letting the doctor cut it off because it never worked right after, and that was 40 years ago.

GREAT VID - Stumbled across your channel last week. Have been watching since! The RING thing - 8th grade 1969. The fad was a silver ring, embeded black onyx stone with your initials. I was doing chin ups in the boys locker room on the toilet stall. The top of the bar came to an outward "V" so you couldn't do chin ups. Well, when I finished, I let go and my ring caught the V and I hung there, ring cutting into my finger. Long story short, back then the police dept. had a cutter and the cut the ring off. Go figure.. No more ring since. Not even a "silicone" wedding band. No thank you. My wife understood/understands. Keep the vids coming!

Just a tip, when splitting a case half get yourself some extra bolts 2" longer than stock, place and tighten in 3 or 4 spots across the cases and give them a whack with a hammer and your halfs will pop apart. Edit: new oil pump assembly would make for cheap insurance for the amount of $$$$ your putting into it.

JMO look at the crank shaft rod journal and see if it blueish purple if it is that engine was starved of oil. The carbon build up tells me high mileage quite possible, but oil consumption due to oil change interval may be a factor because that oil was really black and looked a little thick there was a little sludgish oil in there and sludge doesn't lubricate. Lack of lubrication will eat rings and bearings.

I like to use a bolt to remove broken bolts. Ya build up with weld until its sticking out. Then you can weld the whole way around the bolt. The problem with using a nut is getting weld to stick to whatever your getting out. You have a small hole and it always welds to the nut and breaks off of the bolt.

Why did it happen? Polaris UTV engines are known for having crankshaft oiling problems. Defects or restrictions in both the block and the oil passages in the Crankshaft. I've heard of Many Polaris engines with less than 100 hours on them blowing up and having to be replaced. The 2012 Polaris rzr 900 xp engine that I just rebuilt only had 384 miles on it and it was blown up Twice. The 1st time it spun both connecting rod bearings and seized. The 2nd time 3 of the 8 valve guides dropped out of the head and bent 2 valves and broke 1 valve, piston, and bent 1 connecting rod. If you ever have the head off check and see what valve guides are in it. If they are the composite Steel ones, (they will be magnetic so check them with a magnet) replace them with good quality Bronze valve guides. The steel ones do not expand at the same rate as the aluminum head does when the engine gets warm which causes them to drop out of the head. Bronze has a similar expansion rate to aluminum so replacing them with Bronze valve guides is a very good upgrade.

Guy at old job.. was trying to guide a drill on a long shaft for trailer skirt frame holes. Mistake # 1 was zip tying trigger. 2nd was holding spinning shaft with gloves to guide it. Grabbed glove and pulled hand / arm around the shaft. Had a wedding band on that smashed onto his finger. They had a hell of a time trying to remove it, as his hand was swelling up. Same can be said around electrical work as well. No jewelry while doing these types of jobs.

Those Polaris engines have had a problem with the oil pressure relief valve getting stuck and having no oil pressure. There are some videos on RU-vid that talk about that and show how to fix that. I have rebuilt three with bad cranks and I now stay away from Polaris stuff. I also wonder about how dirty things are, even when you're putting them together, I have to have things spotless for reassembly. Especially parting lines. You need a small parts cleaner, makes it easy to clean things up. Great videos, very informative. I don't know how you put out so many. Vinny is great too, where has Jade been??

So from what I see, it looks like there was some overheat possibly at some point. The exhaust valve springs are either weak from heat exposure or they were not closing completely due to, improper clearance between the cam follower and valve stem. Rev 6 is nice aftermarket parts, I am curious if you are going to replace the valve springs especially the exhaust? Also it seems strange to me that the oil pump chain is stretched so far that it may have jumped teeth on the gear. I wouldn't think that the oil pump would have loaded the chain to where it would stretch, unless it passed some foreign material through it and restricted its ability to rotate. Curious to see how tight the new chain is. I look forward to your rebuild video. I am a fan of Polaris, I think they are one of the better machines on the market. I still think you should get a Vapor Hone cabinet and clean-up the cases and parts. It would look like a new motor when you put it back together. Thanks for the video, Very Respectfully Lance.

I think you couldve got those bolts with vice grips and some heat!lol but you mentioned youve had trouble in the past welding nuts on studs make sure to shine up end of stud and grind galvanized coating off nut put your helmet on and stick the wire right down on stud and dont stop untill nut is full and the reason the studs were loose is because alum expands quicker than steel the heat tranfers from the welding and i havent seen you need this but you were working on seals i it reminded me of a handy tool for pulling seals on like side cases where you cant get into other side is to get a long sleeve nut and weld a sheet metal screw on one end and screw it on slide hammer then obviosly just drill little hole in seal screw it in and pull seal you mayhave known that but im old and been doing those kind of things a long time! (welder/fabrication) and a side note my dad was a jeweler and your ring was toast so a good pair of side cuts will snip that gold band and pretty easy fix for jeweler they resize it youll never know it!! Some advice for people splitting cases without a tool grab some bolts the same thread pitch as case bolts but longer and thread them all the way in on opposite sides and hit them with a hammer a couple times then tap around where the cases meet if they don’t come apart right away with a rubber mallet or dead blot. The longer bolts you thread all the way in will not damage anything they will bend before anything. Your welcome

Also, all that carbon in the head, I bet it was burning oil, they ran it low on oil, the crank got hot, rod bearing scored. So they quick did an oil change but it was too late. That's my guess.

I've heard of guys losing their fingers cause of jewelry. Jade needs to get you a rubber band wedding ring. Maybe she would propose to you and it could be a whole new ceremony and more RU-vid content.
