"Listen, Tamer, the company is going through a tough time financially right now and we have to downsize and let some people go…and unfortunately you’re one of them...but know this is not performance-based."
Those were the exact words that my Senior manager told me on Friday, November 18th when I was let go from my dream job as a Mechanical Design Engineer at Serve Robotics. These words have been replaying in my head for the last few days. Although they reiterated it was NOT performance-based, I can't help but feel shocked and lost due to the nature of this unexpected round of layoffs that affected me and my former co-workers.
I talk more about it in this video. Timestamps are as follows:
00:00 Intro
01:57 how it happened?
05:16 the aftermath
08:13 what I learned
10:13 next steps

In 2016 I lost my first engineering job. It was my fault due to poor performance. I was the only one let go. You're in a much better spot than I was. Severance, a growing youtube channel, no wife and kids to support. Years from now I think you'll be proud at how well you've handed this situation.
@me_hanics

How did you handle it afterward? Right now, I'm an intern at a big company, but since I put university over work my performance has been quite poor and I am afraid that they will not hire me as a full-time employee when I receive my degree.

@@me_hanics In my experience, it’s not what u know, it’s who u know. Eg. My uncle was 2 yrs into a bs @ Princeton, briefly connected w a nasa rep after a lecture one day, 2 months later the Apollo Mission was announced. So he knocked on nasa’s door, was initially rejected, then asked for that same rep & was immediately hired to calculate the inner & outer module thermodynamics. Internships & jobs are all temporary. In the end, no one really cares about your gpa (as long as it’s decent). They care more about u & your value. And the more u invest in networking + connecting w peeps = the more success u will have in life.

I have undergone through a similar situation to yours 2 times this year and even though I graduated at the start of 2022 with BE (Structural). My first engineering company went bankrupt so they had to let go off me and the second company was sold and downsized and they had to let go off me as well because I was a graduate with least experience in the firm. Now am into my third company and doing really well, learning a lot and becoming more valuable as I gain more experience but I have felt the same devastating emotions after spending months of self study and overtime in my previous companies because I loved it so much and the fact that I was new to the industry hence gaining as much knowledge was a must to thrive in the industry during this volatile market activities occurring. I am grateful to have kept going this far even though I am fully burnt out and my soul drained dry, focusing on other things have eased up the stress by quite a mile but I won’t lie, it’s not that easy and its a long struggle. Best of luck in finding a new company that’s more stable and wish you all the best in your engineering career. Keep making those video, I find them awesome to watch other engineering disciplines. "When life breaks...There's nothing more powerful than a person rebuilding themselves" Tamer, the sincerity and the experiences you shared to help others go through different stages in their S.T.E.M career that people do not traditionally post have made an incredible impact in the community. Sorry to hear about this one bro...big hugs. Even if it was a mistake on your end, you still have my support as that's part of being human. You have demonstrated such unconventional character and wisdom than many of the masses. I once lived in Markham where 95% of the people were pretentious/fakes who went to UW comp sci or eng and only posted their highlights (i.e DECA medals, Engineering Internships, awards) while concealing their academic strategies, or their negative failures/circumstances. They were smart, but they were extrinsically programmed hyper-competitive cynics who really cared about imposing their superior image among others and only doing engineering thinking that they would be the next Elon Musk to become a billionaire and among the world's elite through a technological breakthrough. While that fortune is very improbable but not impossible, you are on a much stronger path to becoming a world elite whether you are recognized or not, through your dedication to engineering and ambition to make the world a better place through your innovations and hard work. I'm not saying this to just give hope when there is a loss. I actually can sense a brighter vision on the horizon if you keep up your great work. If it becomes challenging to balance both career changes and youtube at this time, by all means, take a break and take good care of yourself. Then, whenever you feel ready you can always return back and I, and with all hopes, your fellow followers will be there to support you. Wishing you all the best with this adjustment as we await for your revival to see your ship sail stronger through this rough storm and into the beautiful waters that lie ahead.

I also learned that more and better opportunities open up, most importantly you gain your time back and then can work on things that got neglected from devoting your life to a company. That first lay off gave me the motivation to go from part time to full time student and finish my bachelor's degree then a master's degree. You'll do great man, chin up, and enjoy this new beginning. I wish I had mech eng opening I could refer to you to help you out through this rough time. But wanted to just say hang in there. I tell this to all my mentees back in Sauga/Waterloo that it really takes leaving home and where you grew up to really appreciate the awesome education, we were privileged with in the larger GTA. I don't know you personally but based on your background and growing RU-vid channel I can confidently say that you will be back on your feet doing great engineering work in no time. I think this is common for younger new grads they put in a lot of time and kind of prioritize the job above all else the same way you prioritize your studies in uni. But The real world is not like school. I think it takes some more experience in life to realize what’s really important which is family friends etc . At that point you start going to work put in your hours then go home. If you want to further your skills go home and work on your own side projects etc. the world is a cold place and for companies money is money business is business, don’t sacrifice your life for them.

Lost my job in August, was exactly like you, my entire life was revolving around work and it was my life, the up, and downs. But because of it I was able to go travelling, yesterday I finished a 3 month trip around the world, a trip I would never have been able to do working, I am thankful that I did save and I was in the financial state where I was able to do it but regardless these next couple months will be the start of your next chapter :)

I've lost 4 jobs in similar ways, within 5 years. All out of my control and all because of cost-cutting. But there's nothing else you can do but keep looking for a new job. And a year later, you'll find yourself in a better place where you're better paid and working for a better company. Hopefully things happen for a reason.

Hey, Tamer! Thank you for sharing your story, experience, and reflections, man. I'm also looking for work after getting "let go" of my role as a technical writer last June. Just like you, the process of moving on and moving forward has been difficult and emotional. The news still lingers in my head sometimes. Thank you for sharing your advice and lessons learned, man. I'll not only try my best to follow them, but I also hope that both of us can continue to find good work and roles to contribute to the world. One last thing: Know and remind yourself that you have intrinsic worth and value. I bet you that most people who watch your videos and comment on them see that time and time again. I would also bet you it's the reason we continue coming back to watch your videos and engage with you. If you need proof, you have me. I hope you'll be able to find a new role before the year ends or, at least, see your own silver lining. But, for now, take care of yourself, pace, and rest when necessary. Wishing you well, from Canada!

I definitely understand your thoughts of feeling lost or not knowing where to go from here, but you is an inspiration, your a talented engineer and I just know something better is coming your way and I am happy that they are covering your salary until the following year.

Sorry to hear, a lot of layoffs in tech and other industries, so you're definitely not alone and I'm sure you'll bounce back to an even better role. Curious as to why you're not interested in roles in Canada - you mentioned CA, Europe, and NYC, and thought it was interesting that you left out Canada (no issues w immigration, ties in Canada - family, undergrad school, etc.).
@TamerShaheen
@TamerShaheen Год назад
Engineering roles in the US tend to pay A LOT more than engineering roles in Canada from my experience which is why I prefer the US. In terms of Europe, I just think it would be cool to live there haha. But if I were to find a high-paying job tech job in Canada, then who knows...I might take it

Tamer! I've been following you since my undergrad years as we studied the same things. I have long since graduated and gone on to graduate school. During that time I lost two jobs and at times I couldn't even click on your videos because I knew it would trigger me. The first job loss is always the hardest especially during undergrad when one has a very romantic view of work life, a career, and engineering in general. I can promise you for sure that after this you will be in a much better form mentally for any job, or organization. You will give your best but won't idolize your job. You have the right skills and attitude and I believe in you! I love your drive and attitude and how you freely and honestly share your videos. I'm rooting for you and you will be fine. Imagine how many more opportunities you are going to discover next? I think that mechanical engineers especially at the designer level are really underappreciated despite their important contributions. I moved on to autonomous systems. Brief advice when applying for a job, look at the company's financial timeline investments and financial reports/performance, this is good risk management. Any company that hires you in this financial climate, you will know for sure that they really need you.

Don't worry Tamer, as you said these things happen and its sometimes not even our fault. Always remember that everything happens for the best and i'm sure you will end up successful in the end. Also pls never be upset at loving your job and what you do, most people won't work 12 or 16 hour work days and that fact that you did shows how passionate you are. Keep going bro, rooting for you.

Had an opportunity to work in Australia. Worked there for a least two years till the CEO came in one day and announced they had to close shop. Had to go find a job and travel state to state. Had my wife and daughter with me. When I found one, the boss later changed her mind. Had to leave Australia and start over. After that I got into a startup doin an Electric vehicle (was into building batteries, scooters and other prototypes). I was happy working long hours just to finish the job till they had funding problems as well. Later I have been asked to do part time to help out. I declined the offer since I needed a full time job. Eventually, got my dream job. Just keep at it. Learn and explore new things like CAD, software and hardware programming. You'll get there eventually. Employers need people with a lot of skills. Time to focus on big companies.

So, your video popped up in my recommended and even though I have not watched it entirely, I wanted to send my support through this difficult time! I had an internship in September after months of applying and rejections (we all know the story). In October, I was let go due to funding issues as well similar to you. While my boss did not phrase it like that, I knew that was the reason for my contract being terminated. Still, it was difficult not to take her words at face value and have it hinder my self-worth. I share this because losing that internship was the greatest blessing to ever happen to me! Still, I hope you take the time to process and grieve - it might sound silly for a job, but trust that it works. Another door opened for me and it was to my dream job, setting me up for my future career. I truly believe that the universe works for you, even if it's in ways you can't comprehend. So, I'm wishing you all the best through this difficult time - keep your head up! You seem to be an intelligent, capable individual and I have no doubts a much better opportunity will come along for you. Take care of yourself!
