This is what i came to say. The taste of food comes mostly from the nose and that is why covid takes your sense of taste. The spiciness comes from the tongue and nose, so if he cant taste it he either has a placebo effect or is just lying.

Feel, not taste. It's how capsaicin interacts with your cells and reduces their heat tolerance. It's why capsaicin is so irritating to everything in/on your body.

You can still be a food tuber because even if you lose the ability to taste food you can still feel the consistency of the food and also analyses the food in nutrition

I've had this same problem 2 yrs ago, it's sinus. Basically you don't taste any flavour, the only thing you feel is the spice , salt and the sweetness. I took medication but mostly this can go away on its own in a few weeks or maybe months.
placibo effect, spice is actually a chemical called capsaicin, it is a sensation, so either ur toung is also numb to feeling or you just have very good spice tolerence.
I was like that for a few days, started noticing my taste buds werent tasting food anymore, it last for a few days but its safe to say maybe eat some meds, maybe you dont feel sick but probably sick🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️🤷🏻♂️
