I have wanted to try the TTArtisan 100mm Bubble Bokeh lens for a while and I was given to opportunity. I used it on my Canon 5D Classic to try and get an idea of what the lens is all about.

It's an old lens, trioplan design. It needs a lens hood - but I could've told you that. All old lenses need hoods. This is one of those lenses that needs a bit more thought. When handled right, it's lovely.

You need the sun shining on fresh water drops or flowing water in the background to get the iconic bubbles in nature. It takes some learning to master!

Yeah, this guy doesn't know the principles behind the effect. He doesn't know how to get that effect.

I’m a diehard lens hood user. People like Ken Rockwell lol who tell people that lens hoods are a waste of time have no idea what they are talking about. The two TTArtisan lenses are have for Z-mount DX (35mm f1.4 and 50mm f/1.0) are tack sharp. But soap bubbles, you need a Nikon Plena. Just kidding, studio shots look great.

Agreed. Rockwell spouts a load of nonsense, mostly. Hoods are generally needed for most lenses if bright sun is in front of the vertical plane of the lens, unless it has a deeply recessed front element.

I am not quite sure why you'd try to use such a lens for landscape work. Most lenses will need a hood if bright sunlight is in front of the plane of the lens. And you don't need strong back-lighting to create good bokeh balls!

It was more for the mist leaving light rays in the trees but I see what you’re saying. Thanks for commenting.

all lens will more or less loose contrast with sun spill. this lens emulates vintage glass which, because of minimal or lack of coatings, don't inherently have much contrast, compared to modern glass. But that's in fact, the appeal of vintage lens or in this case, one that mimics a vintage lens. If you want more contrast, post process.

I hope later this season I will get a chance to play with this lens more. I tried it on the TechArt M to E mount AF adapter. I used a m42 to M-mount adapter onto the Techart adapter. In the process, I can enjoy using f2.8 with AF (including eye AF). The focus throw does affect how I can use the AF with the adapter. I have to adjust the focus manually for closer objects and then the AF kicks in.

I’ve seen them AF adaptors. Are they any good?
@Martin-nu6ym

@@ChrisBaitson Much prefer using this adapter for many of my lenses. I have found the Nikkor lenses work better than the Zuiko lenses I use for infrared photography. I also have LensBaby Velvet lenses and finally I can lock in eye AF at the widest aperture. Phillipreeve and DustinAbbott reviews match what I experience with the LM-EA9. Probably the biggest limitation is that TechArt only makes the adapter for the E and Z mount systems.

I have the lens and have had a great time. I have some unique images during daytime use. Also really great for floral images, etc. The soap bubbles are amazing, never seen anything like it. No way to share here, but have created some really cool images. It can be used effectually for daytime and nighttime use. But you have to understand its peculiarities. My best shots are not at f2.8 but rather starting about f/3.5.

Cheers Martin - More reassuring as I have one on the way - Not purchased it for Landscape or even clarity, so we'll see if the Bubble bokeh can put a smike on my face.

If the aperture goes down to f 5.6, black corners occur. But there is no problem if the aperture is wide open. Strange.

@@aczephyr interesting. Mine doesn’t do that.

its like shooting a vintage lens, with shading the lens from the sun as well as under-exposing for better contrast. i like 2/3 of a stop to a stop under exposed with single coated vintage lenses to get best results👍

I wonder if the reason for that could be that its a cheap copy of the original Meyer Optik Trioplan 100mm f2.8

You probably would’ve got it had you used it like you did with the camera shooting your video, with background separation between the subject and the background.. I really enjoyed your video, keep up the good work.

This lens has a very simple old optical formula, so luck of contact isn't surprising. Its strength is exactly in the unusual bokeh.

If you want to use it for landscapes, why didn't you show any shots at f9/11??
@ChrisBaitson
@ChrisBaitson 8 месяцев назад
I was in the woods and wanted the background separation. F9-F11 is overkill for woodland most of the time.

I would say back to the drawing board for this lens. I will definitely pass on the lens for any photography & it is unfortunate because TT Artisans has some really good lenses.
