Hey Rick. Great video as usual. I agreed with most of your choices, and it is true that in Season 1, they hadn't fully perfected the characters yet. I have to say that The Scotland episode is one of my favorites, and I know that most people disagree, but it was the first colorized episode that I ever saw (after the Christmas episode), and I watched it with the closed captions on. Doing this, I was able to hear all the lyrics of the songs, and they made me laugh out loud. The same applies to the Operetta. Very funny song lyrics in that one, and they are difficult to understand. I never liked these episodes in no particular order: Lucy Plays Cupid, The Saxophone, Oil Wells, Lucy in the Swiss Alps. I've had two types of friendships in my life. The first kind is the kind where I am always watching what I say because I'm afraid of offending my friend. The second kind is the kind where I don't watch what I say, I just say what I think and what pops into my head. In the first kind of friendship, there are never arguments, but the friendship becomes emotionally draining after a while. The second kind never becomes emotionally draining, BUT on occasion it leads to an argument or fight with my friend. I far prefer the second type, it's more rewarding and I feel closer to my friend. It's the best of friends who occasionally get angry with each other, and it's the best kind of friendships in which there are occasional fights.

You're right: even though she requested that the show's script clerk, Maury Thompson (who later was promoted to camera coordinator), be in the scene in case she forgot a line and needed a prompt, she nevertheless nailed it in one take. Fun factoid: in an interview, the actor Ross Elliott, who played the commercial's director, said that he had to chew the inside of his mouth to keep from laughing out loud. He also added, "Lucy would do new stuff that wasn't rehearsed, like an extra funny face. Then, at one point, she became 'drunk' and started making eyes at me, flirting, and I almost broke up again." Sounds like it must've been so much fun making that episode. I think I can hear Bill Frawley laughing with the audience during her Vitameatavegamin scene, and others have mentioned they also can hear Desi laughing, as well. I love that episode.

Great video, Rick! Thank you! With "I Love Lucy" all four stars were exceptional in their roles! How else would the show have been such an astronomical hit? Too bad about the entire Frawley/Vance animosity. The feud started when William Frawley caught Vivian Vance's behind-the-scenes comment about how Frawley was much too old to play her husband! That's what started it all. Frawley already had had a career, Vance's was just a few supporting roles in so-so films. This series made them both wealthy. Vivian's husband took a huge chunk of her money in their divorce settlement ... (he was the actor who portrayed Dore Schary in one of the Hollywood episodes) ... but, that's another story. It's not a perfect world. It's sad that they both didn't realize how important the show was for them. Had they just cast aside any sort of pettiness that they felt towards each other, things may have turned out even better. Later though, when "I Love Lucy" was coming to an end, the producers approached both, asking if they'd be interested in doing a spin-off show, along the line of "The Mertzes". William Frawley was all for it. Vivian Vance said "NO!" Besides her relationship with Frawley, Vivian thought a show without the Ricardos wouldn't work! I don't think, "I Love Lucy" would have been as successful as it was without the Mertzes, either. But, that's my opinion. I'm very happy for the episodes that we do have and with everyone having their own list of "best" and "worst" ... many of my "best", being on someone else's "worst". Awesome!

I agree with your selections and reasons for them, Rick. Probably my least favorite (I won't say hate) of this list is the Scotland one others have mentioned. Overall, several of my less favorite episodes are in the final ('56-'57) season. There were definitely strong, stand out episodes, like the one with Barbara Eden, the wax tulips, the barbecue, but there was (to me) a feeling the series was winding down, and indeed the move to the country house transitioned the show into the occasional (13) hour long episodes of 1957-'60. The last season or two if 'The Lucy Show' with Lucy already working for Gale Gordon made for an easy transition into 'Here's Lucy', but I digress. No, I'd have to say my least favorite episode is 'the statue' that aired 5/6/57, just 20 days before I was born. It's a little sad for me to say for that reason, I know, but it's true. Ironically, the three favorites I mentioned above immediately preceded the statue, airing in April.

Therefore, a lot of the radio show eps/scripts were used especially in season one. I’ve heard all the radio shows and obviously some didn’t translate well to the screen. I agree to all on your list (not necessarily in your order) and the parts that you only want to watch of those episodes. The episodes I usually don’t want to watch are (scarily) a popular ones like the Lucy does a TV commercial, Job Switching, Lucy thinks Ricky is trying to kill her pilot ep, and a few others I can’t name at this moment(brain fog). Yes, William Frawley was a self-admitted baseball fanatic and particularly didn't want to miss any New York Yankees games, so his agent stipulated that it must be in Frawley's contract that if the Yankees made it to the World Series, Frawley would be free to attend the game. According to what I've read, Desilu ended up needing to juggle the filming schedule a handful of times due to that clause. Any time it's a Fred-less episode, apparently Bill Frawley was at a baseball game! :-)

The two I disagree with you are Lucy and the Dummy (I love the dance scene on stage) and the Young Fans. I appreciate the latter because it was one of the very few (maybe the only?) episodes when Lucy and Ricky worked a scheme together. Usually Lucy alone or Lucy and Ethel are scheming together. The Young Fans mad me feel even better about Lucy and Ricky as contented partners.

My favorites are those with The Orchestra in it. I think that your list includes many of the episodes that I'd put low, but for, I wouldn't really include The Adagio, The Amateur Hour, Lucy's Last Birthday & The Young Fans. I'd replace them with, but for, we get to see her Pre-I Dream Of Jeannie, The Barbara Eden Episode. It has some humor; The Ricardos Miss The Mertzes (them going back and forth from CT to NY); Lucy Writes A Book & Lucy Writes An Opera. One thing to note about The Birthday Show. Not only is it Heartwarming & Has Music, but, not only does it have TV Guests (Kenny & Jerry), but, I believe Director Of Photography, Karl Freund, Writers Jess Openheimer, Madelyn Pugh Carrol, Bob Carrol, Jr., & Other Real Life Behind The Scenes People (I'm not certain, but, I even think that Musical Director Wilbur Hatch gets a few seconds on camera. Let me know what you think

I agree that it’s hard to make a list like this because there are so many great episodes! The one I don’t like is Episode 28 in season 4 with Harpo Marx. My favorite episode (and I use this loosely because I don't know if you count the Comedy Hour as part of the show), but I adore Lucy Hunts Uranium. Just love the Mad Mad Mad World like comedy. Happy Holidays and a healthy, happy New Year, Rick. Thank you for always spreading your positivity - great to see your always audible smile in this video! True, the "dream/musical" episode isn't very memorable, but on the other hand, "The Operetta" is one of my favorites, start to finish! I haven't pulled up an episode list, but when I think of the bland ones, the hunting/camping trip one is the first to come to mind. I can't NOT like ANYTHING with Bea Benaderet (I'm a huge Burns and Allen fan) and Edward Everett Horton! Maybe they were trying to capitalize on the Warner Bros. Granny character and not have her do the same thing for Lucy that she was already doing every week for Gracie at that moment in time. I'd have to check, but it almost seems as though Richard Crenna's appearance along with BB's was part of "making the rounds of the beloved radio character actors... If it's Season 1, then it probably pre-dates OUR MISS BROOKS being televised (where RC played the identical character), but he was SOON to be part of the Desilu family. Maybe it was in negotiations! Love your acknowledgement of "Keep jig-uh-lin', Peggy!"

Great list, Rick! Agree with 8 of your 10. But I would remove "Lucy's Birthday"--that final joyous scene where they sing the theme song is a highlight of the series for me and always leaves me feeling happy; and I like Lucy's interactions with the Friends of the Friendless and Mrs Trumbull's elevated part in the episode. And I disagree with you (and the majority of Lucy fans) about the Scotland episode. Such clever, clever lyrics and catchy tunes! (I read somewhere this is also one of Lucie/Desi Jr's favorites; they used to sing the songs when they were kids). For those two episodes, I'd substitute the preposterous (even by Lucy standards) 'Drafted' and "The Inferiority Complex" for the same reason you included "Lucy's Birthday"--Lucy is depressed the whole episode, which I don't like. I'm on board with your other 8 picks.

Rick, I agree with your list and the Scotland episode could very well be the worst. Here’s a couple I hated. I believe it was season one, episode one. It’s the Mertzes’ 18th anniversary and Ethel wants to go to the Copa and Fred wants to go to the fights. Both couples end up pretending to have dates (!!) and in the end the girls are dressed up as hillbillies to pretend they’re the dates. The other episode is Lucy and Ethel dress up as martians as a publicity stunt to earn money. They end up at the Empire State Building and the press is there and everyone believes we’re being invaded and it makes the news that Ricky reads about.

"The Girls Want to Go to a Nightclub", the one where they pretend to have dates and Lucy and Ethel dress up as hillbillies, was actually the first "I Love Lucy" episode shown! Nobody knew the characters yet, so I guess the audience was more accepting of them all getting dates while they were married, plus it's quite unrealistic that Ricky and Fred would not recognize Lucy and Ethel initially. I just overlook it because the show was brand new. I like the episode.

Terrific concept for an episode. I’m also a James Bond fan and there are similar discussions on the lesser films there. I can’t disagree with any of your picks. I think a rule of thumb here and in most shows is if you have guest stars playing an overwhelming portion of the story, especially to the extent the main stars are missing, you have a very weak episode. The ones with the old couple and the matchmaking and the young people loving Ricky and Lucy are prime examples. The cheating stuff also never sits well and the Scottish episode is just bad. Love the video, keep up the great work. I agree 100% on Fred Mertz btw.

Scotland, def my least favorite. I generally hate dream sequences anyway in sitcoms but this feels like some weird special episode. The two headed dragon was really too off for I Love Lucy. They could've had them in an old Scottish manor home/hotel or something and had them having spooky experiences like the hotel was haunted. And they didn't have to do over the top ghosts in chains, just odd things happen. You could see them wandering around at night, Fred in his goofy pajamas/cap combo, looking for the source of a noise. I enjoy some of the European episodes, the grape stomping and designer dress episodes are priceless. But Monte Carlo, Scotland, Little Ricky's birthday while they're in Italy, those just don't do it for me.

I haven't done these in order except for my number 1. But they are my 10 least favorites: 10. The Diet - did NOT age well. Just - no. 9. Lucy Plays Cupid - Cringe City, and like you said, no Mertzes weakened it. 8. Ricky's Screen Test - IMO the most selfish Lucy ever was toward Ricky and obnoxious. 7. Ricky Has Labor Pains - Sorry, why is he still expecting his pregnant wife to keep up with everything like she used to? Sorry you feel neglected, but bro. She's PREGNANT. 6. Lucy's Last Birthday - I don't care if they made up for it in the end. The execution of their plans was not the best. 5. Lucy Writes a Novel - literally no one wins in this episode. Ricky and the Mertzes get teased and humiliated, Lucy puts all this work in on a book that ends up being a joke more or less... it's just not good. 4. Don Juan and Starlets - Lucy's feelings are kinda disregarded a lot of the time. Even if Ricky is vindicated in the end, her insecurities are still valid and not really assuaged. 3. Bull Fight - it's just forgettable. I forgot all about it until you mentioned it in this video. 2. Face To Face - also just forgettable. Episodes where the Ricardos and Mertzes fight are not usually my favorites, but at least most of them have redeeming moments. This one just doesn't. 1. The Matchmaker (season 4) - this episode just feels mean. Nothing about it makes me laugh. It's mean spirited from start to finish.

A musician, I cannot remember the name, noticed this and later formed a band, and I swear I'm telling the truth, called "Betty's Not a Vitamin". Season 1 had the episode "The Marriage License" with Lucy noticing the wrong name on her marriage license, so she and Ricky went to Connecticut to get married again, which I thought was dull and uninteresting. Season 1 "Drafted" was also an uninspired story. Season 2 "Ricky Loses His Voice" is not a favorite of mine, with all the old chorus girls coming out at the end. Yes, Rick. One of the worst is “Ricky’s Old Girlfriend.” I remember it well. The fat shaming and sexist ageism (sexageism) on I Love Lucy was so disturbing. Vivian Vance was NOT overweight, and to think that the fact that Lucy stops being jealous (gleeful) that Carlotta Romero wasn’t the young, thin “beauty” she had been 20 years earlier is disgusting. And, yes, that knowing Desi was a creepy sex addict and they thought it would be funny to allude to it on the show is also disturbing.

Hey Rick, Great episode! Probably won't make my own Bottom 10 List. By and large, your list is quite on point. Totally agree with you on the episodes w/o the Mertzes (Lucy plays Cupid and the Young Fans). They are not strong. One episode I'm not a big fan of is "Mertz and Kurtz." I don't find it very funny at all. Your thoughts? Although not one of my favorites, I like "Bullfight Dance" more than you. I think the bit where Lucy & Ricky try to sing 'Suwannee River' and 'Humoresque' at the same time has some comic value to it. As for my Bottom #1 episode: Scotland. Totally. I don't even bother watching it. It's not funny at all. A wasted episode, IMO. All of the other episodes on your list have "some" redeeming qualities. The Scotland episode doesn't even feel like I'm watching ILL. An episode comprised entirely of a musicalized dream sequence??? I agree with your list Rick with the exception of the Dummy episode with that hilarious dance scene which still makes me laugh out-loud. Good observation about the darkness of the early part of the episode but I have overlooked that as I anticipated the dance scene. I also agree that the 3rd and the 4th seasons are the best...however I love the gems in the 6th season e.g. Lucy with a loving cup stuck on her head or the Florida episodes...Elsa Lanchester guest staring as their driver...thanks for sharing this excellent video with us.

I agree with these episodes. Without Bill and Vivian the show loses character. You’re number 2 is my number 1. Even though I have Scottish ancestry, this episode never makes me laugh. All the others are ok, but I understand how you arrived at the 9 others. She, Desi, Bill and Vivian are I love Lucy and always will be.

My MGF was born in Glascow and I really disliked the Scotland episode. Even the sword dance which Lucy does is not graceful or well done, like the real dance. There would have been a lifting feeling had it been done properly and Lucille Ball could definitely done it well.

Rick, have you ever read, “The Other Side of Ethel Mertz: The Life Story of Vivian Vance”? In it the author points out that we as audience members are sharing the experiences via Ethyl. Vivian was quite the Broadway actress in the 30s & 40s. She had a somewhat sad life. Very supportive of mental health.

I Loved The Fabulous Four - each of them made the I Love Lucy show the best ever. Each person played their part to perfection. In real life, both Frawley and Vance had difficult lives. (As did Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz) Amazing that these people could come together and produce the most popular tv show ever. Gave laughter to the world. I Love Lucy - is not just a title to me - Lucille Ball is my favorite actress ever: in 10-15 movies; her radio show My Favorite Husband; and the Lucy trilogy 1. I Love Lucy, 2. The Lucy Show 3. Here's Lucy, they appeared in that order and I liked them in that order.

I agree with the Dragon episode. It was scary and creepy, especially when I was younger It gave me nightmares. I'm glad you included it.

IMO, the "Don Juan and the Starlets" episode hit a little too close to home for Lucille Ball.
