@@coreyduprest1384 Can't say as I've ever heard he helped with the future Lucy solo shows. One of the sticking points in the marrage was Lucille wanted to continue performing and being active in the business while Desi was ready to call it quits and retire from all aspects. As nicely as Lucy spoke of Desi in future years I never heard her give any creedance to him being helpful with the solo shows; though she gave much credit to the team that did stay with her: new husband Gary Morton who she made titular executive producer; and several members of the CBS executive team that stepped in to help both with her Lucy shows and the reorganization of Desilu under her sole directorship. Desi wanted to be free of it; period. At least that's the way I've understood it. Best, Jack A.S VanNote President JAV Communcative Enterprises A Multimedia Firm

No matter how many times I've seen them, I still love watching the original "I Love Lucy" episodes. There's just something magical about the chemistry between the four actors. I also think that Desi never got enough credit for his contribution to the show. I've tried enjoying the newer shows "The Lucy Show" and "Here's Lucy" but they just don't measure up. It seems like the characters in the later shows are always talking too loud, especially Lucie Arnaz.

Desi was involved in the first fifteen episodes of "THE LUCY SHOW" as executive producer- until Lucy bought out his share of "Desilu" in November 1962. Yes, she had a habit of "shouting" her dialogue in later years, and expected everyone else to do the same.

I think the stress of being Celebrities and being on a tv show that shows them as a couple and the stress of always trying to keep a good image to the public I think they always love each other even after the divorce I just think being in the line like distorted the marriage

Not the stress but Desi’s wondering eye and living high drinking too much. That was not Lucy and though she loved him a lot, it was like two separate people. Drink changes people and it caused his career & marriage to go down.

I watched the Edie Adams commentary on the DVD, it was insightful. I especially liked the description of the song, "That's All", Edie apologized because the lyrics were so poignant in this very difficult transition not only in the lives of the Arnazes' but also in television history. Edie described how Lucy told her the song was perfect and how she appreciated it. Love the song, I have loved Lucy since 1962 and I continue loving Lucy today. Thanks Rick, for all of the programming you provide, it's a lot of fun! #lucy&desi

i agree completely, Brian. I'm also glad that Gary Morton had a good relationship/dynamic with Desi, and Lucy with Desi's wife. Gary was smart with Lucy's son & daughter that he wasn't trying to replace their Dad in any way, but would also be there for them 100%, and it seemed to work well. They really did love each other. I'm not positive about Desi's wife with the kids, but am figuring it likely was good too. I'm sure in both cases Lucy & Desi worked hard together to reassure them at first as needed.

Also it really helped that after Lucy and Desi divorced - it was a very amicable divorce - they used the same lawyer and agreed on everything. People destroy their own marriages regardless of the business they are in. Just when you're in Hollywood and stars the public is going to find out each and every time whereas in other businesses it goes on behind closed doors more privately . It just seems like it's more prevalent in that industry but really it isn't.

If you see Lucie Arnez's home movies of Lucy and Desi in the pool with her baby for the first time - you can see Lucy lovingly sweep the wet hair out of Desi's eyes = this is so very tender and telling of the love they had for each other all their lives. Also at the end of Desi's appearance on SNL he looks right into the camera and says I love you Lucy

Also, the last time that Lucy spoke to Desi at the end of his life, his daughter held the phone up to his ear (he was too weak to hold it himself) she heard her mother saying, I love you, I love you, I love you, I love (with different intonations) Desi replied, I love you too, honey. Within two days he went into a coma and died. Lucie Arnaz realized that the date they spoke on the phone was what would have been their 46th wedding anniversary.

My parents separated when I was 15. They fought. My father was unfaithful. They owned several businesses where my dad was the boss man and my mom was the bookkeeper. Eventually they gave up the businesses and did their own thing. My dad moved to the USA and when they divorced, my dad flew my mom to Florida, signed the papers, then went on a cruise together. They remained close and it was nice still having birthday cards signed "love, mom and dad". My dad moved back to Ontario when his diabetes was getting the better of him. We celebrated everything as a family. They travelled the world together. My mom cared for him and when he died, he left her everything. My mom couldn't get him a single plot in their favorite cemetery so she bought a double. It's pretty cool that my divorced parents will share a headstone. So proud of my parents for being able to pull it off all those years. What great roll models! #lucyanddesi

It's certainly nothing to be ashamed of, Matthew Lynn. This was our era, we actually remember when real life was like this--well, they exaggerated for humor's sake, but people of the day could relate. I just want to point out that, while it is always being reported that the last "Lucille Ball-Desi Arnaz Show" (AKA "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour") was filmed the day before Lucille Ball filed for divorce in 1960, which was Desi's birthday on March 2, I've long been dubious of this assertion. The only "evidence" I have ever found of this is (which seems to be the only basis for this claim) is that on that date Lucy had completed "the last bit of film" required under her contract. But "last bit of film" does not necessarily mean the series itself. She was also required to film commercials for Westinghouse. So maybe that last bit of film was nothing but a commercial. In fact, in the closing credits of the last episode, it has a 1959 copyright date, not 1960. Also, I came across an October 1959 article on Vivian Vance, titled "Lucy, Vivian Part Friends" that implies production on the series had already ended. Everything about the show is written in the past tense. For example, this quote from Vivian: "In all the nine years I was with Lucy I never appeared in a movie or TV show. Toward the end I thought I was getting tired of acting, but I was just weary of the same role. From now on I hope to never be seen wearing a Marcel and house dress." Clearly Vance's statement implies the series has already been completed. In another article, dated December 6, 1959, is this quote from Vivian Vance: "There's only one more Lucy show to go, AND THAT'S ALREADY BEEN MADE." What she was saying, in essence, is that there was one more episode to be broadcast but it had already been filmed. So apparently "Lucy Meets the Mustache" was filmed prior to December 6, 1959. news.google.com/newspapers?nid=950&dat=19591206&id=28QwAAAAIBAJ&sjid=bVUDAAAAIBAJ&pg=5477,1199057 And in another article, from January 29, 1960, titled "End of an Era," it starts out talking about the last episode with Ernie Kovacs. It says that Lucy "hurried to her dressing room and wept," as the episode was completed. So clearly that episode could not have been filmed in March if an article about what happened after it was filmed appeared in the newspaper two months before that. The article talks about Lucy's plans to go to New York (without Desi) to appear on Broadway, though no mention of a divorce. Still, it's VERY clear that the series had already wrapped up. news.google.com/newspapers?nid=336&dat=19600129&id=MQArAAAAIBAJ&sjid=dUgDAAAAIBAJ&pg=6797,5089983 So bottom line: While Lucy did file for divorce in March 1960, this was months after this episode -- "Lucy Meets the Mustache" -- was filmed.

The Fred MacMurray episode is great, but isn't all that heavily focused on its guest star (basically it could have been ANY guest star in that role), and it really seems to foreshadow "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World"!

I guess you can say, I’m a huge Lucy fan! At Universal Studios, I stayed 3 hours inside the Lucy store while my family went out for the rides. I have ..what I call..., my Lucy shrine at home! For years, my friends and family would always buy me Lucy gifts adding to my collection. I have a full collection of I Love Lucy trading cards along with other goodies. I can’t think of too many people that don’t like Lucy! Here’s Lucy. Lucille Ball are my other favorites. Probably my favorite scene....if I were to pick one, is Vitameatavegamin! We used to know a guy that was an actor in Hollywood in the 50’s. When he would talk about all the stars on set, I would only want to hear about Lucy. He said she was very polite, professional and had that raspy rich sounding voice. #DesiLucy

I tend to notice that actors and actresses that play loving couples on TV couldn't stand each other in real life. In a way, I think that shows how professional they are to keep their grievances private and do their jobs. It's unfortunate the way things had to end for them, but at least they maintained some peace with one another in the years after splitting. #LucyandDesi

If you watch that home movie their daughter showed of them in the swimming pool with their grandson there can be no doubt that Lucy always loved Desi. Gary Morton was somebody to take her to functions, and he knew it. But she was a strong-willed person who would not be made a fool of by his womanizing.

You can love a person with all your heart, but that doesn’t mean you want to live with them and take their abuse. I think that’s what it boiled down to. Lucy filed for divorce years earlier and had a change of heart. Sometimes the things you love the most about your partner, end up being the things that tear you apart.

I left a comment on one of the Munsters videos the other day. That's neither here nor there, but to say that I've been a tremendous fan of all the shows that you profile in your videos. I was an atypical child of the eighties, preferring golden age television and still older black & white movies. I've only cried, upon hearing of celebrities passings, twice in my life. Both occurred during my freshman year of high school, the first being Lucille Ball and the latter was the comparable comic actress Gilda Radner. By the time of Ball's death, I had read several biographies on her life & career. Just a few years later, I had put this episode on to play when the phone rang. I hit the mute button and took the call glancing occasionally at the screen during the conversation. When the call ended, I sat there mesmerized & continuing viewing the silent performance. The stiffness & chill between Arnaz & Ball was so obvious. So too, was the discomfort of the remaining cast. I remember tearing up, well aware this had been their final performance. I believed then, as I still do today, that they were a couple who loved one and other deeply and still couldn't make it as a couple. The final videotape showing them together, in a pool with grandchildren, really shows it. This video really brought these memories rushing back to me. Thanks for posting. I'm passing on putting in for the giveaway, as I've seen all their episodes countless times and figure there are many people out there who need to be introduced to this groundbreaking & enduring sitcom. 🙂

Incidentally, scrapper900, I was raised in a small town in the early days of cable television. Even when it was made available to us we weren't first to subscribe. Ergo, I'd spend many a frustrated late Friday & Saturday night adjusting the rooftop aerial so as to rein in grainy images from Joplin, Missouri so as to view classic movies from the thirties & forties. I imagine now that I was as mesmerized by the impossibly tall ceilings and magnificent penthouses in those old pics like The Thin Man as were original moviegoers. I remember being amused by Laurel & Hardy, as well as the Our Gang comedies too. I'm afraid I didn't have anyone to converse with at school about the wonderful movies I'd seen over the weekend when I returned to school on Monday. I also relished going to my Grandparents in Belton, Missouri as they had an independent station Channel 41 which showed the classic sitcoms that my hometown stations never aired. Lol, I find myself today catching up on the entertainments I missed from the eighties. 😉

Something to add here....the song that Edie Adams sings in this episode, "That's All", was specifically requested by Lucille Ball as a means of communicating with Desi one last time....it was her final cry to him to have only her in his life (he was a notorious womanizer). Edie agreed to sing it. Knowing this, when you hear her sing it, it's even more heartbreaking. Edie once said she had a difficult time keeping herself composed while singing it. Also, while Edie is singing, you can see when Lucy, herself, is about to break down and struggles to keep herself composed.

#LucyAndDesi - I'm so glad that you covered this episode. I have always been curious as to how things were off set, behind the scenes, during this last episode. I've heard rumors over the many years that there was some nasty fighting, dirty pranks, awful things said by one cast member about another. It's nice to know some truth. Of course, one has to know it was a sad time. It was for the entire country, I'm sure. I was born three months after their divorce was final, so I wasn't privvy to it until much later lol. But thank you. It cleared up a lot and I love your dedication to a thorough investigation of the truths and just being thorough, period. Thank you. I'd love to win the DVD set. I believe it would have one of my favorite epsiodesw on it...where they stop at the roadside diner and stay in the rickety shack with that crazy old man that steals their steering wheel lol. (My first favorite is "Too Many Crooks" though!) But whatever the case, I still am going to continue enjoying your thorough coverage of the facts of my favorite TV show of all time. Thank you!

A real winner, Rick! I read many of the comments below and only thing I can add is what their daughter, Lucie Arnaz, said recently in an interview. That after the divorce, it took about 2 years for both Lucy and Desi to readjust to their new lives and for the negative emotions to calm down and their relationship to start again on a new level of deep loving friendship. This is in sharp contrast to other Hollywood marriages that break-up and the couples barely speak to each other again. Also, it's a shame that Bill Frawley and Vivian Vance didn't solve their differences between them, "bury-the-hatchet," and go on to do the proposed spin-off sit-com "The Metzes." Would have loved to have seen that. It could have worked with good writers behind it. Stay Positive and Be Hopeful! #LucyandDesi

I dont think that not making i love lucy or any other show they made together would have led to a different result. They had issues in their marriage long before they divorced. Lucy filed for divorce before they started to make i love lucy but decided not to go through with it after all. Most of the problems in their marriage was because Desi liked women, alcohol and was a gambler.

I grew up watching I Love Lucy, although they were produced and aired way before my time. They brought a lot of laughter into my life. I romanticize the relationship between Lucy and Desi as being one of passionate, true love; yet, I am very saddened by it, too. There is no doubt in my mind that although Lucy and Desi remarried and loved their spouses, they continued to love each other deeply until the day they each died. Romantic; yet tragic. #LucyAndDesi

You have to remember that Desi directed the last three hour-long episodes. He was also under intense pressure, as chief executive of "Desilu", to keep the studio operating "in the black". And his liaisons with other women, his drinking, and gambling also got in the way. Because of all this, he was often impatient- and short-tempered- when behind the camera, and that put an additional strain on his relationship with Lucy. When he directed Lucy and Milton Berle in a scene during episode "#11", he wanted them to do it once more, as he just wasn't satisfied. "Aw, come on, Des.....", Miltie groaned. "NO!", Lucy snapped. "We're NOT going to do it again." "Come on", Desi insisted. "We do it ONE MORE TIME." They did. The scene may have been better, but that didn't make her any more receptive towards him.

What a sad ending to the perfect TV Show and TV couple. Lucy went on, a few years later to do the Lucy Show in which Desi was a big part of the production. "I Love Lucy was not just a name of a TV show" - Desi. It was also mentioned before, the choice of song Edie Adams sang "That's All" was an appropriate song to sing.
