Vivian Vance was drop dead gorgeous, you don't see her beauty in this show, but if you see her back in this time era out side the show, she was absolutely amazing and beautiful.

@@josieguthrie2433 I never understand watching it now why or how Fred could possibly allude to her being fat! She has a great figure, probably took the same size dress as Lucy, except that Lucy had a smaller bust and longer torso, arms and legs (being a little taller) which can create the illusion of being thinner than someone with a larger bust and or shorter torso. However, when I was brought up watching it in the 90's as a child, I seem to recall her as plump. I guess the comments on her weight made me see her as bigger than she was.

Unequivocally, there IS - not WAS - but one Lucy and one Harpo. Combine them, and you have ONE incredible talent, to wit, ROOM SERVICE, for starters. Lucy is comedy, whereas Harpo is...well, Harpo! Who needed to hear his voice when his harp sang far more beautifully than even the angels in Heaven could play! I thank Lucy for all my memories, having grown up with her, Viv, Des, and William - ok, even Doris! I thank Harpo and all the Marx Brothers, for when I am down, I can always watch any, being I own them all, of their wonderful pictures - never 'movies.' (THE BIG STORE is one of my ultimate favourites!) And I thank God for giving us all the sense of humour, the ability to laugh and love, and the grace of missing those we love with fondness and peace. Cheers!

Truly a great episode (one of far too many "I Love Lucy" episodes to name in a single post), but I treasure it for a strange reason, besides it being hilarious. There's something about listening to a harp that makes my whole body tingle, and relaxes me. When Harpo Marx played, I had that "unique" feeling, and it was duplicated when I saw an old rerun of Yvonne DiCarlo playing the harp on an episode of "The Munsters". I even bought a CD of harp music for that reason. I am absolutely bewitched by the melodious sound of a harp.

...Harpo was a the best male harpist ever.... his brother Chico was a brilliant pianist....Groucho could be funny as well as annoying but Harpo was a musical genius....his years of experience show through every time he's on. maybe that's why he felt he didn't need to practice as much as Lucy...!! THANKS, Rick!!#JohnWayne

According to the books Harpo Speaks and Son of Harpo Speaks they said that Harpo practiced that harp three hours a day. He even practiced in the bathroom!

Even when he did Broadway shows and films Harper worked pretty much alone watch him perform and you'll see what I mean. He comes on the person ask him a question or two and and stepped back to see what his reaction is going to be. Lucille Ball was more of a given take performer and that's why she wanted to rehearse more because you're always worried that the other performers going to forget their lines or their stage business and screw you up as well

I'm a perfectionist, like Lucy and when I was a Theater Arts major in college, I remember taking this acting class that we pretty much had to make a short play with a group. All we had were brainstorming ideas and we just went with it. During the comedic aspect of the play, I got the giggles. I couldn't help myself. We had rehearsed the scene so much that when we performed it in front of our classmates, I knew what was going to happen next and I just broke down laughing. I couldn't stop myself. It was a scriptless play, but we had gone over the scene so much, I just couldn't contain myself. I get that rehearsing a scene is essential, but when it comes to comedy, one should just role with it. There were many times I heard Desi or William laughing during certain scenes. The show is one of the greatest comedy shows off all time and has surpassed many generations. I💙Lucy #johnwayne

Another hit, Rick! This Hollywood episode is quite the favorite, as shown by the numerous comments below. As for your question, I'd say it depends on the comedians and actors temperament as rather to rehearse a lot or just a few times and then "wing it." That mirror scene does require lots of split second coordination between the two actors, so much rehearsal is understandable, but Harpo knew that routine and Lucy didn't. Oh, well, it turned out to be a winner! I read somewhere in the past that Lucy and Desi wanted to get the three Marx Brothers in the show, but Groucho and Chico turned it down for some reason or another. Remember, Lucy had acted with them in one of their best movies, "Room Service," 1938, so she knew all three. So, in the ending of the episode, it's Desi as "Groucho" and Fred as "Chico," coming in the living room, and not the real ones. Would have been extra great if the real Groucho and Chico had marched in the room at the end. The live audience would have brought down the house with wild applause and laughter! Stay Positive and Be Hopeful, follks, as Rick suggests! #JohnWayne

I think I’m a middle grounder when it comes to rehearsal time. It’s possible to micromanage something so much that it looks stiff and artificial, but there has to be enough rehearsal so that everyone involved is comfortable and knows what to expect. Since both Lucy and Harpo were legendary, I think it’s safe to say that each had a good idea of what worked best for their particular genre. #JohnWayne

As someone here mentioned - Lucy had to duplicate Harpo's movement - would not have been possible without deep coordination - esp. difficult if Harpo äd libbed"how could Lucy have known what to do? Also, there were no retakes.

In this situation, practice, practice, practice. They would have to be spot on. However, all the other "spur of the moment" gems in "I Love Lucy", from the main 4 stars make it the classic show it is. I love Lucy could never be replaced! Thanks Rick, for digging around to find all the little treasures about these old shows. We are learning so much trivia! Will we see any "Leave It To Beaver" anytime or did I miss it? Thanks for posting. Must have been an amazing harp recital. Harpo plays so well on the episode. I think Lucy rehearsed so much because you couldn't do retakes like in the movies. Because of that I Love Lucy has a movie quality that holds up today.
@LJ-ht4zs
@LJ-ht4zs 2 года назад
Agreed - Desi would say at the outset (since film was so expensive) no retakes. When actors such as T. Bankhead or Richard Burton also Joan Crawford drank heavily and would not know their lines during rehearsals - she would be a tigress about it. All three commented about her and did not like her for that. Richard Burton died young cause of his excessive alcoholism and on his last movie before he died, he often could not stand cause he was drunk, and sometimes they had to film him lying down.

According to Lucy, from an interview on The Dick Cavett Show, the reason Harpo and she had to rehearse so much was that Harpo usually did not repeat a scene exactly the same each time. Harpo was used to basically doing a solo bit and it wasn't vital to be exact each time. For Lucy to be able to mirror Harpo she had to know what moves were going to be done next so she could duplicate them.

You do great work on each video that you make and you really do your homework and get as much info on the subject you are making the video about. I've enjoyed the info on The Munsters videos and Gilligan's Island. Lucy just wanted to make sure she had the routine down pat so she would do good when it came time to do the taping. She sure was a hard worker and dedicated to making sure she did what she had to do to entertain the audience. Even today, she still entertains whoever watches her shows. I wish I could have met her before she passed away. Thank you Lucy. You are still loved to this day and may you rest with the angels and keep everyone laughing in Heaven. #Johnwayne

I have to say I am not a perfectionist and more like the Harpo Marx type if I were a performer. However, having grown up with I Love Lucy - to hear that she had to rehearse, rehearse, rehearse - shocked me. All of her work flowed - simply and spontaneously. However, I know her style decades later and I am totally impressed by her work and how she expected same from others. This helped make I Love Lucy the most classic sitcom ever - Over 70 years since it appeared in 1951 people are still watching it today - and will watch well into the future. I first saw I Love Lucy when I was 6 when it came out, still watching it in 2022

Great channel, Rick! You always do a terrific job. The Lucy/Harpo episode was probably my favorite. I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this, but Bill Marx wrote in his book "Son of Harpo Speaks" that he arranged that harp version of Take Me Out to the Ball Game for his dad. He was a young musician (18 at the time) and was also an usher at Desilu Studios. Thanks for all you do! Keep up the great work.

I understand why Lucy would want to rehearse the mirror sequence so it would be “perfect” but Harpo was a traditional comedian, who understood that sometimes the best comedy isn’t perfect. Harpo (& Chico too) could play such empty headed characters until they sat down to play music. All pretense was gone (even though Chico could sort of horse around while playing the piano). When I was growing up, we made it a game of “Silly Harpo’s gone “ & “Silly Harpo’s back” during his harp pieces. Now I have to go get out my Marx Brothers DVD’s. Thank you for such enjoyable videos. Harpo Marx was ill while filming this episode. He was 66 years old and had suffered a heart attack shortly before filming this episode. His doctors advised against doing the show, as they didn't to put extra strain on his heart. Harpo wanted to do the show and thus did so. He even did a very strenuous task which was not in the script of bending down to pick up his hat while carrying a girl on his shoulder. He suffered a second heart attack shortly after filming ended. P.S. I'm not entering the contest for the video as I believe I have too many videos already.

Harpo Marx was the best at what he did, and as far as the rehearsing philosophies between Harpo and Lucille Ball, both philosophies are good...after all, Practice makes perfect, but Harpo didn't rehearse much and he made it work. Jackie Gleason was the same way about rehearsing on the Honeymooners, as he would rehearse with the cast one time and have someone else read his lines for him, so the rest of the cast could get their timing down...and it worked. This episode is probably my favorite episode of I Love Lucy, with the episode with George Reeves as Superman a close second. Harpo is probably my favorite of the Marx Brothers, followed by Groucho. Harpo died on his wedding anniversary on September 28, 1964, but I would have loved to see him in person as well. There are a couple of videos here on RU-vid of him speaking, and he has a fantastic voice.

Practice, practice, practice because it does make perfect. Enjoy your videos Rick as always, it makes my day when I get a notification from you. Smiles. #JohnWayne

Lucille Ball's perfectionism - and the outcome is why we are still watching I Love Lucy 70 years later. Her face was the most well known face in the world at one point and the show was seen in over 60 countries. Re-runs will probably go on for many more decades.

You know it’s interesting...In Barbara Walters interview with Lucy she says she does not “think funny”. She is just gifted in knowing exactly how to BE funny. Sounds like she and Harpo Marx had that in common as he didn’t “think funny” either. Knowing this, isn’t it amazing these two actors were phenomenally funny?!!

I first started watching I Love Lucy when I was a little kid. I was home from school on a snow day and it came on and I thought... ugh! It’s in black and white! I don’t want to watch this! But, I did and I was hooked!! I’ve loved Lucy ever since! Lost count on how many times I’ve seen each episode and I still laugh like it’s my first time! #JohnWayne

Hi Rick! Another great video! I love this episode! I would have to say that, in my opinion, it would depend on the individual actor. What works well for one person might not for another. I think each actor would have their own personal style. Thanks for sharing! #johnwayne!😁

They learned they're craft from different teachers, or maybe self taught. This is one of my favorite episodes, because I've always liked the Marx brothers. To bad they couldn't get Groucho and Chico on board. That would have been something.

I would personally practice to a T, like Lucille, but I also kinda see where Harpo was coming from. There’s something about impromptu acting that can sometimes make the moment more authentic.

I don’t think any acting style is better than one or the other. Improv takes a large amount of skill to master, and is very impressive. But to spend so much time honing your skills to near perfection is just as impressive to me. Both actors are fabulous at what they do. Amazing video! #johnwayne

Lucy and Harpo made a great combination. I am not sure whether rehearsing to a fine point or remaining loose with just a couple of rehearsals is better, but it is great how well their differing styles meshed. It was seamless and really funny. #JohnWayne

Rick! The Hollywood episodes are at the top of my faves list. You were talking about Harpo becoming 'Harpo' when he'd put on his wig. I always thought he was actually mute. Is that true or have I been mistaken all theses decades? Great episode. Love the backstage stuff! #John Wayne.
@ricknineg

Great point. He was not mute. That was all part of his character. He used to do his comedy with words but people asked him to speak less....so he just stopped completely (for his Harpo character, Arthur spoke). You can find recordings of his voice online :)

I find it interesting that Lucy was a perfectionist like that. She masted her performance to the point that it looks natural and unrehearsed. Buster Keaton was known to film exactly opposite. His movies had a good start and end. The middle was completely impromptu. He insisted on only 1 take on every scene!

It's interesting to see how they use the studio in behind the scenes photos. Sometimes, the whole kitchen was removed, and something else was there instead.

I love watching your videos. I have the entire DVD set of I Love Lucy, but I don't have this DVD, I'd love to add it to my collection. Just as a side note, We just bought a male and female parakeet and were thinking of names and decided Lucy and Desi. #John Wayne

Great to see someone take the time to tell the stories about these shows. Perhaps a portion of the the next generation will be there to keep the classics from fadding into history . Now for a nod to the Duke # John Wayne.

Simply, some people HAVE to practice and practice, and some don't. Lucy wouldn't practice that much if she didn't have to. The end product is the only thing that matters, and it's up to the artist how they get there.

This episode is one of my favourites. Harpo hadn't worked for a while because he had a heart attack. His doctor advised him not to do the show but he really wanted to do it. Right after the show he had another heart attack. What a trooper #John Wayne
