We did it! Pretty much! Right at the beginning of quarantine, we decided to rip the band-aid off and see what happened. Sonny took to every really well. He is still not completely off diapers, but we probably will not do a full-on part three. But as of today, he is telling us when he needs to use the potty, and sometimes going on his own. He is still wearing a diaper during the night and his nap and that is when he is doing most of his pooping. Its a process, right!

Any advice for getting across the goal line?
@Popofcoloraz

We kept our daughter commando (pants but with no undies) for about a month before we put undies on her. That seemed to help her get used to not having a diaper. It also took us a good 2 months before I felt like she was truly potty trained, and her process was very similar to what sonny’s sounds like. There were a few (several) times when I broke down and thought we weren’t doing something right because it wasn’t working, but those turned out to just be minor regressions and after 3-5 days she was back to normal. So in short, keep doing what you’re doing! It will work, just may take longer than what you expected (definitely how it was for us).

I would suggest rewards, singing a potty song, playing a potty cartoon, reading books about the potty, have him go in the bathroom with you, stop the pull ups completely and have him wear underwear. I literally tried everything because my son was very strong willed :) I started taking my son every 20 minutes and always asking if he had to use the potty. I also started when the shelter in place began. I think what really motivated him was the rewards (I gave my son popsicles) and words of encouragement. You’ve got this mama!

When my niece was potty training she always would say “bye pee/poop”. Then she wanted to flush, then hand washing. I just thought of it when Sonny said “look at what I made” he’s the cutest!

Today I sat the boy on the loo facing the lifted seat and gave him a bath crayon to draw with, he said he didn’t need to go, I told him that’s ok, we’ll just sit and draw and then a minute later he looked down, asked me if his wee goes in the water and then did one. I also sat him on there whilst I was in the bath previous to this, wrapped him in a towel and gave him a couple of cartoons to watch about going to the loo - a little bit lazy but he was happy and comfortable 🤷🏻‍♀️

I moved the potty a foot closer to the "adult toilet" every 2/3 days and my 25 month old learned to hold it just a little longer till we made it to the big toilet. I also found it helpful NOT to say "its okay" when she had an accident. I started out that way but I quickly realized that she actually thought it was okay and would have many accidents. I then started saying "oh oh" or "oh gosh, i see we had an accident. Lets keep trying to make it in the potty" or "pee pee goes IN the potty and poop goes in the potty not on the .... floor ( or wherever the accident was) It was also helpful when i asked my daughter right before a movie or an outdoor activity "Where does pee pee go? Where does poop go? and wait for her to say "POTTY!" then i would say " thats right!! we go pee pee in the potty not on our... underwear, outside, on the floor, on the sofa etc... My daughter had a few accidents by day 4 then 1 a day if that by day 7 and by the 10th day she was fully potty trained. Good luck to you!

Saying “that’s okay” is so confusing for him. Accidents are not okay, they are not what you want to set as an expectation. A gentle “oops! Let’s clean it up” will work better.

My son is 5 and potty training was so hard! He was interested when he was a little over a year old. We thought we were making progress but he regressed. I honestly didn't think he would ever get it down but by the time he was three he was fully potty trained. Be PATIENT it's so hard but they will be ready when they are ready.

We did the Oh Crap method at 22 months. He went commando for 3ish days and I had him try on the little potty every 30 minutes. Next step was pants with no undies and stretch to every hour. We started using a seat reducer with a step stool on the big potty and made a huge deal when he peed or pooped in it. After about 5 weeks we had no more accidents and we put undies on. At close to a year of being potty trained he still has occasional accidents (he just peed his pants in his carseat yesterday 😫 such a pain to clean) but he can go on his own without asking. The key for us was also teaching pushing pants down and pulling pants up by himself. That took a long time for him to be able to do by himself. Keep working on it and if you have time, the Oh Crap book is awesome. Good luck!

Oh don’t feel rushed or stressed about this. This is one of the last milestones from baby to boy and they do it the moment they are ready and not a day before. This should be a super fun process and it is when they are ready. Sometimes they regress a little once they realize that they just became a “big boy” and that means that they weren’t ready. Take the stress off of yourself a little and remember that they don’t go to college wearing diapers so don’t ever feel rushed. They also make a regular adult toilet seat that has a toddler attachment instead of a potty or the big bulky padded seat, Amazon has them and this was a game changer.

This is very encouraging to me. My son will be 3 in July and we have not started working on potty training with any real seriousness. He has an insert for the toilet and asks to sit on the toilet occasionally, but other than that, doesn’t show much interest. I really don’t want to clean up multiple messes every day so I am waiting until he starts showing me more signs that he’s ready.

I'm always late to comment but for our son ... we had a really similar journey and loose semi stiff shorts were a good transition from naked to clothed. Anything soft like sweats or underwear at first had him confused just like Sonny. We were initially concerned they would be too rough on a sensitive area of his body if that makes sense but there was a little strip of fabric over the zipper and they don't seem to irritate him at all. For us, that helped the transition to him knowing the difference between diaper and clothes. We haven't gotten to underwear yet but working on loose pants and its going much better this time around! Good luck to you guys! He will get it in time. You're paying attention to his cues and what he needs and I really think that's half the battle.

We waited until my son started waking up dry. He trained in one day two months before he turned three. Never any accidents. He didn’t like being changed so I told him he had to use the potty if he wanted no more diapers and that was it! Our ped said boys train closer to 3 and 2 yr olds don’t have strong enough brain to bladder control. Good luck!!

Our sons are around the same age. One thing I would recommend setting a timer. We use our Alexa and set a timer for every hour (we used shorter intervals earlier on) and that sound became synonymous with bathroom times. Our nanny taught him how to use the big potty and that’s been another tool “it’s potty time! Do you want to use the big potty?” And he gets so excited. Basically he stands on a step stool in front of the toilet, pulls his pants down, and then puts his hands on the top of the toilet, like where you would display a candle or something) so he’s leaning over a bit and just goes. Weird. But it works 🤪. No idea how we will tackle in public, but at home, where I know it’s clean, it’s been perfect.

If anything I've learned with my son is that I shouldn't overwhelm him asking if he needs to go potty. My son is VERY stubborn even tho he knows what to do and has done in the past sometimes he just doesn't want to do it and he is verbal about it🙄 Is a process like you say, it takes time. The most important thing to remember (and sometimes it's hard, I know) is to be patient and keep encouraging them🥰

Hey Whit! Loving this series as we also took advantage of quarantine to potty train our June 2017 baby. He also did better than we expected, although we hit the exact same hurdles. He got the peeing on the potty with no pants on pretty easily. by day 2 he was just going by himself. Then we put on pants no underwear (as per the "Oh Crap.." potty training book) and he was just peeing right through his pants. We then realized he didn't know how to pull his own pants off and on but that he also wanted to do it himself - like not tell us. So we worked for another week with pulling up and down his pants and by then he was great! no accidents. Our son was also physically ready so after the first week we stopped using pull-ups at night. BUT, he still isn't super vocal about it, so I do worry about him in public were we can't just park a potty somewhere and let him know about it. Lastly, daycare wants him to be potty trained while using pull-ups before he stops wearing them. But when we put a pull-up on him, it basically signals he is "allowed" to pee in the pull-up because it feels like a diaper. So we also have to work on getting daycare to accept him as trained without going through their pull-ups test so he can just wear pants and underwear and be allowed to go potty like at home. Can't wait for part 3!

I have 3 Boy's (ages 15, 11, and 3) ALL CHILDREN ARE DIFFERENT!!! My oldest, started about 3 1/2 (I was young, naive, didn't know should've done it earlier) maybe a month, that was it ZERO diapers ,NEVER A Pull up, nor "accidents " 2nd Son, started at 2 1/2, was few month's and had "accidents ", especially at night until probably 8 ish year's old 3rd and MY 3 YEAR OLD SON. Started in December a month before he turned 3 , got a "fun potty" for Christmas, etc.. 5 month's later, wears underwear everyday (still has some accidents, and HAS to wear a pull up at nap time, nighttime, and outings that will be longer than hour or so) For the most part his pull up is dry when wakes up, but not always, espcially if has milk or drink soon before bed. So it's definitely a process and CANNOT (just like with ANYTHING, compare to other's). Going #2 is DEFINITELY A Harder time bc he has bowl issues BIG TIME!!!! You'll start to recognize "clues" for when they have to go Good luck, y'all got this💚💙❤👨‍👦‍👦🙏

Right after my daughter turned 2 we put a potty chair in the middle of the living room, read her a book about potty training for toddlers, talked to her a lot about it (+ simcom) and left her naked for a few weeks in the house. After 2 days she was potty trained. We watched a bunch of movies for those two days and she would sit on her potty most of the time, naked of course. She’s now a devout nudist but that’s okay because she’s potty trained lol we’ll take what we can get, right? Every time she went we would make a HUGE deal about it and celebrate like she just won Tour de France. We gave her 1 mini m&m for pee, 2 for poop. After 2 weeks of her using the potty that was in the middle of the living room we slowly started moving it back closer to the bathroom. Eventually it was in the bathroom and she would go in there when she needed to use it. After 2 weeks of that we got her a potty seat and step stool and took away the portable potty and she started using the toilet. Eventually I had to take the step stool away because she was using it to climb all over the house every time I turned around. She now just climbs onto the potty and sits backwards. We taught her how to wipe ASAP and she’s now almost 3 and has been potty trained for 10 months and wipes herself like a pro

So we bought my son a seat that sits on the toilet so he can go on it as well as a step stool. However....... after watching my husband a couple times standing up he was do fascinated that he stopped using his little potty and stands on his stool and goes standing up. Pooping he will ask for a diaper. I don't know how to fix that. But it also may be a challenge when you are able to go out to get him to pee. My son was scared and so we just stuck his training potty in the back of the car so he could sit and go. He's ok now thank God lol

I started my daughter in pants/knickers straight away. When she did an accident, I’d say “oh you had an accident, it doesn’t feel nice to be wet/poopy pants does it? Next time tell Mum/Dad and we go to the potty(toilet)”. Then I’d clean her up and tell her where wees and poos goes, and try and get her to tell me where they are supposed to go. Also before we go out I do a “Magic WEE WEEs” and race her to the toilet (always works as she thinks it’s a game) then either she goes potty first or I go first before we leave the house. I’ve no advice how to transition to proper toilet from potty as my girl was terrified of the potty. Any advice on getting my toddler to wash her hands??? My one never wants to wash her hands after going to the loo 😩😩😩

I honestly think those little potties don’t really work, everyone I know at least who used these their kids took much longer because then you have to train from the little potty to the real one anyways. Use those potty seat attachments and get him straight on the real toilet! and use a step stool for him to get on. He will have tons of accidents in underwear for a few weeks, then less and less. but don’t go back to diapers! he will eventually hate the feeling of being in his own poop/pee 😂 .

I think potty training isn't going to happen if he doesn't want it to happen. Any pressure around using the toilet may make it more difficult. One day he'll be like, "mom I want to use the toilet", and that is the right time and it doesn't have to be a long, drawn out process.
