Whitney Port We are 98% done potty training my daughter. I figured she was really ready to do it when she pooped for the first time on the potty. She would pee here and there but we weren’t pushing it too hard. When she pooped, we knew it was time. She has had very few accidents since we started a couple weeks ago (yay quarantine project!). We do rewards - stickers for pee, M&M for poop - though we are starting to phase those out. Every kid is different but thats how it worked for our 2.5 year old. Good luck!

Whitney Port in the process still! My daughter was doing good until I had my son and then she wanted to be back in her diaper like him 😩

Funny story about the first poop in the potty - my daughter had become obsessed with going on her own. If I tried to go in the room with her I’d get “please go away”. Since she’d usually just pee, if that, I said ok. I asked how she was doing through the door and she said fine. Couple minutes later, she comes out with poop on her hands and legs... she had tried to clean it up herself. Poop everywhere! And it was like an adult sized one! Although gross, I couldn’t stop laughing!! I tried to maintain composure but just told her that she did really good going on the potty but this is why she needs my help 🤣

We didn’t force my oldest daughter as she was resisting us so we didn’t push. She was over three when she finally was ready. She started going on her own and quickly pregressed to sleeping overnight without a diaper. I feel like we went from 0 to 100 overnight, so I am glad we didn’t push her. My second is Sonny’s age and she still has a full diaper in the morning but is doing well with training. We did give one M&M for a reward but only for a little bit and that seemed to work. She has started to poop on her own now. We haven’t pushed as we know we all learn the skill eventually and children develop at their own pace.

Oh he is mooooore than ready! As soon as they know they have to poop or hide to poop, that’s a huge flag that they’re ready. He’s good to go! The one thing I would suggest is undies for a boy to start because when they pee, it’s a fountain alllllll over the place.. not a lovely puddle like a little girl. Go Sonny!

Hi Whitney! My son is 26 months and we’re currently potty training him. He had been interested in the potty for a while now. We haven’t gone diaper less yet, but something that has worked for us is the Cocomelon Potty song (we sing it every time he goes potty). I also give him a lot of water to drink and ask him if he needs to go potty every 30 mins. We also do this after his meals, before bath, before bed and in the morning when he wakes up. This week he woke up with a dry diaper a couple of times! You guys are doing such a beautiful job with Sonny. Sending you lots of encouragement from one momma to another💕

Happy to watch this! We are on the struggle bus with my 3 year old. It's been ups and downs. Recently we went to visit grandma for a week and it was as if he has never potty trained, we had to start from scratch. We are back home and he is doing a little better. It is challenging but I am trying to stay positive and not lose hope, I know he will eventually get it.

Every kid is so different. Our daughter potty training very easily and with minimal stress. Reward charts worked well for her. Our son was not as motivated and we tried several methods. Ultimately it had to come from him and him wanting to be dry. He finally became potty training just before turning 4, but still has accidents here and there. Just go with your instincts and adjust accordingly and he will get there. You guys are great parents and work really well as a team. You got this!

My son is the same age as Sonny. And showed the same signs as Sonny. We just started potty training 2 weeks ago. He was ready but he was scared. So when we started I went all the way. His diapers were gone over night and I removed the diaper as soon as he woke up and I really really was with him the whole day. Watched him closely and explained, the first times are crucial. I celebrated him always!! And he got some stickers everytime. Sometimes it worked great sometimes he didn‘t want to. But I didn‘t go back. The first week was hard for me and him. He needed so much support because it was so new to him. I watched him and had an alarm clock set every hour. The stickers really helped. The first days he was just in tshirt, after 3 days he nailed peeing and always told me. We then had a week of only loose pants (because undies feel similar to diapers). Some accidents but I never acted disapointed or angry! I took the potty everywhere. The first 4 days he didn‘t poop. Then we had one week of pooping in his pants 🙈 while pee was no problem anymore. Since a few days he now also knows when poop is coming and tells me. So he is now completly dry during the day. He started using the big toilett sometimes and when we are outside it just goes into the bushes. No problems anymore 👍🏻 also he is no longer interested in stickers as soon as he knew how it works. So that was just a motivation in the beginning. AND the pull up diapers for the night are starting to be dry now! So this comes after they are getting used to hold the pee and peeing conciously. I think we will leave the pull ups when they are dry in the morning for 2 weeks straight...always let him pee before bedtime and right after waking up. 1-2 weeks and everything is done. Just be sure to go through with it when you start it. It just takes a little time for them to know the feeling of having to go. I‘m so glad I did it this way. Friends have been struggling for months because they let the toddler go back to diapers when they wanted to. I never forced my son. I always was understanding and supporting him when he was a little scared of the unknown situation. Wish you good luck! Im so happy I don‘t have to change those 3 years old boy diapers anymore 🤣 the ones of my 1,5 year old daughter are enough 🙈😅

We recently potty trained our LO who just turned two. We made a plan based on the “Oh Crap” books friends had told us about - I didn’t read it as my husband and I try hard to make a lot of parenting decisions based on intuition. Before we started we got a few potty books and introduced him to the potty - he picked it out, went to the store to pick it up, tried it once or twice, etc. We had our LO pant less in the house for about 3-4 days, then he was commando for a bit (like 2-3 weeks), and he just started wearing his big boy undies. For the first few days we also watched Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood potty episode which really set the tone for the day - he still sings the song when he goes. We did no rewards, or acknowledged his successes with any excitement - avoided “good job” as much as possible, but it’s hard not to let it slip, especially when it comes to #2 which is a hard one for most kiddos. Realistically the go-hard-at-it, weekend method probably lasts about a week, and we were lucky with only a handful of accidents. However, now he is waking up with a dry diaper and asks to go every time he has to. Felt like we ripped a bandaid off, and we’re glad we did. Good luck!

Hahaha Whitney love your peeing the bed stories. I'm so glad you posted this, my toddler does not want to potty train - - no interest at all! He's a few months younger than Sonny. I've been not forcing it at all, but I've been wondering about readiness as well but he's so much like Sonny, resists diaper changes and doesn't seem quite ready- - thank you for sharing, you always make our experiences seem more normal.

We potty trained our 2.5 year old last month. She was also very interested when we went to the bathroom as well so we decided to go for it since we were working from home during quarantine. She wore a dress with no diaper around the house. The first few days she sat on her potty chair A LOT throughout the day. I think it was cuz she was scared to relax to go potty. She was very whiny when she had to go but she kept holding it in. She would eventually go but my patience wore VERY thin!! It took a solid week and I was about to give up. I decided to give it another day (since I was already 1 week in) and it just clicked with her. She sat on it by herself & told us she went potty. We were in shock & so happy! We never gave her treats for potty, just lots of love & praise. Good luck!

This video sounds very much like you reiterated exactly what the professional explained to you. Which isn't a bad thing. Mothers intuition is always best. One tip, once you start the 3 day process. It doesn't end in 3 days. The training the teaching the guidance continues for days and weeks and months. You of course want to wait until your child is ready but as the adult you mentally have to be ready. Good luck!

My son turned 3 a month ago, and he's not potty trained, I'm having a hard time. Then I read this post that said they don't have bladder control till they're three or older, so I'm waiting, when he asks to go I take him but I'm not on him about it. If this takes longer, has less accidents, I'm ok with it. It's just too overwhelming, and just like with everything else, he will learn, and there's isn't a prize for getting there as soon as possible.

I read the Oh Crap! Potty Training book and followed that method. It wasn't easy but we did it! Now that my son has been fully potty trained for almost a year I think I was too hard on both of us in the beginning. There are lots of methods and I can in no way say which is the best but my number one advice is to be gentle and patient, you'll get there!

We read a book to my son about going potty. He loved the book. We happened to have it at home, just read it too him. After about 6 months, my mom just started to put him on the toilet seat. And we just followed suit a few months after. Now he only wears dipers when he goes to sleep at night. Try putting him on just for fun. No pressure needed. Reading him the book is a great start!

We started potty training the day after my son turned 3. He had shown no signs of wanting to start but we felt he was old enough. Until that point he had a full wet nappy every morning....two days after starting potty training he was dry in the morning. His body made the changes before his mind did (if that makes sense). It took 3 weeks of accidents (every wee) until one day it clicked for him. He's dry during the day now but we have to remind him to go. Potty training is so hard, especially as it's a case of three steps forward two steps back some days. Poops are still a nightmare! Wishing all the luck on your potty training journey!!!

If he can feel that his poo or pee is coming then I think he’s definitely ready. My little boy (now 9!) started this way for about 2 weeks then we did the weekend ‘potty camp’ and it worked a treat. It was summer so he just walked about in his pants or nude! 😆 We kept him in night pants for about a month afterwards but he never ever had a wet one! I’m sure he’s ready, he seems like a real bright spark so he’ll have no problem I’m sure!! 😊 Good luck 🤞❤️

We never gave treats to our son, but definitely compliments every time he peed in the potty. The very first day of potty training at almost 29 months in January after he woke up, we sat him on the potty and waited for him to pee before he can get up, then we set a timer to 10 minutes and put him back on the potty and waited till he peed again and 10 minutes on the timer again, and back and forth throughout the day. We made sure to give him lots of liquids. You can slowly increase the timer to 15, 20, and 30 minutes if he starts to get the idea. In the beginning 2-3 weeks he still needed reminders and we still set the timer, but he eventually got the idea and went all by himself. During this time there will still be accidents here and there, but he did grasped the idea and eventually went to the potty all by himself. We are still working on nap time and over night training, but day time is completely trained.

We are in the process of training our youngest who is 2 1/2. We could tell he was ready because he would hide when he pooped, and he was interested in the toilet. I think it’s scary for them at first because they’re not used to feeling it come out, especially the poops! We went totally bottomless the first two weeks, and now we’re in shorts but no underwear. Eventually he will graduate to underpants. It’s amazing how into weeks He has really become much more aware of when he has to Pee and poop and tells us now. It’s amazing how fast they learn. Also, we use a reward system for him. He gets one M&Ms if he peas and three if he poops in the potty and we celebrate afterwards with a happy dance :-)

I think the "method" you mentioned is great... I didn't know it had a name but I have done it with my 3 kids... I personally think and have kind of proven that the earlier you start the easier it gets... My third and youngest (3yo) was fully potty trained by the time he was 2 and a half... His weakness was pee. Poop, he got super fast... My second one on the other hand... We waited to long ( I feel) we started potty training him when he was 2 1/2 and he was fully p.t. by age 4... He is now 5, his weakness was poop, pee he got super fast. With my 1st one... I followed an old woman's advice and started potty training him as soon as he started walking 15 months old... We spend 4 full days in the house and by the 4th day he pretty much had nailed it... We did however, use a schedule, every 30 minutes we would just take him to the bathroom and sit him there for 1 minute or 2... We did made a huge deal everytime he went and no words when he didnt. Before bed we stopped giving him water 1 hour before bed and took him pee right before he went and then woke him 2 hours after he went to sleep to go pee. After a month he had that controlled as well. Every kid is different and as long as you understand it is a process that may take years to master you and him will be fine 🤗

My son took a long time to get the hang of potty training but my daughter just decided one day she was ready and that was that, she was trained 🤷‍♀️ Poop can be the hardest for them to get the hang of but lots of praise and we used to dance and sing when they finally did it. Also cleaning out a potty can be really awful so moving on to a kiddy seat for the toilet with a little stepping stool made it much easier!

I am currently going though this with my son- who is 2 years 9 months old. We’re on week 2. I did the diaper free thing for about a week and now we’re doing underwear inside, and nothing when he goes outside. The first week was really tough but rewards worked for us- an m&m usually. Also since starting he started to stay dry throughout the night - where like Sonny he wasn’t before. Good Luck!

Same here. Started my son on potty training at almost 29 months at the end of January and in the beginning it was just accidents after accidents. We set the timer to put him on the potty every 10 minutes after he pees throughout the day, except nap time and overnight. He goes to the potty for all by himself. Up till now I still haven't tackled nap time and night time either. I'm just glad I started him just before this pandemic got bad and saved a lot of money on pull ups. I have to say the stay at home order made it easier to train.

My daughter is Sonny’s age and we recently did the diaperless weekend thing...with staying at home these days we actually had about a week where we were all home to do it. We decided to use a sticker reward chart as well which seemed to motivate her, but every child is different! She’s responded quite well; however if we are too far away from the potty (ie - outside) or very distracted, she’s had a few accidents. We are trying very hard not to show how much we want her to go; because it can become a power struggle. So we focus on saying “good job for listening to your body!”, or “next time, tell us you have to go and you can go in your potty”. Good luck!

My son was fully potty trained, and no accidents at nap time before he woke up dry over night. So I wouldn't trust that theory in my opinion. My son was in underwear within 5 days after starting to train him. If he's interest in potty you can start shortly. My son was interested about a month after he started getting interested.

I feel like our boys are at the exact same stage (Rory was born JUly 2017). I am having the exact same experience with my son at the moment - he's interested in us going to the bathroom, but not really there himself yet. The advice I got is to leave it until he seems ready and wait for another month and see where his head is at then. I'm so ready to be done with diapers! Have you thought about - I love my toddler, but the food wastage?

My son started getting interested in potty training a little after his second birthday when he saw kids at daycare using the toilet. We encouraged him and try to get him to use the potty every 2-3 hours. He was always dry at night. He struggled for a long time pooping at daycare- he was fine peeing but would continue to poop his pants. We used pull ups for a long time. It took about 9 months later until he finally started telling us he needed to poop or pee. So he's finally potty trained at age 3! It was a journey, probably my least fave thing of parenting but he's doing great now! Also, my son always preferred standing up to pee so we let him do it that way instead of sitting :) and used a stool.

Started potty training at 16 months. She seemed really interested but was still waking up wet. We decided to try anyway. Spent 1 week locked in the house and let her go naked. (We blocked off carpeted areas) we spent all week cleaning up pee, having conversations, sitting on the potty. She learned real fast she didn’t like the wetness and learned how to control that muscle. She would start going and then stop it. We also used m&ms as a reward system. After a week she was basically potty trained other than pooping. She’s 2 1/2 now and We still use pull ups on long trips and bedtime. But she stays dry at naps. Unfortunately she tends to poop right when she wakes up in her pull-up so we’re still working on that. it’s definitely a process! Do what’s best for you and him! It’s different for everyone.

Not to contradict a childcare expert at all but.. our son (2y/o) about 85% of the time wakes up from nap/sleep with a wet diaper but he's super into potty training! Poops are still intimidating to him and we aren't pushing it so not fully potty trained (he will ask for a diaper when he has to poop and then tell me when he's done lol) but (aside from sleep) he's 100% good to go on pee. Its surely not how I imagined our potty training journey going but we are letting him lead the way and at least for our son dry sleep diapers weren't the first step. I was waiting for that too to start potty training but he had a different plan! Lol

We are 2 weeks in to potty training! (Wee boy 3 in July) we started the no pants method and it worked! But then you have to get them use to undies and pants... we did a 3 day method... 3 days bottomless, 3 days just underwear, 3 days underwear and pants! We have maybe one accident a day but it seems to be when he is tired.. good luck!
@Jmedavidson

We introduced the potty over a few months but never forced it. Then one day I put underwear on him and never put a diaper on him again. After a few accidents he was fully trained. Pull-ups at night but he wakes up dry everyday! Once they feel the pee in their underwear or pants they don’t like that and will learn faster.

Actually their ability to hold pee hits at 18 months. If you wait until your child is ready then you’re doing it wrong. Quarantine is the best time to potty train. I’d just remind him every 15-30 minutes until he goes potty for 3 days. Have him only wear a diaper during naps and nighttime.

I helped a little boy I was watching be potty trained. I just had him go pantless at home and always brought the little toilet in whatever room we were in. I always told him it was there for whenever he had to go. It took him from about 3 years to 3 years and 3 mos. to have it down. He did great. I always complimented him. Even if there was an accident. No problem. :)

We have been potty training for 4 days, first 2 days he just kept wetting himself then we bought in a reward chart and little gifts for ever 5 times he manages to get it in the potty. So far it’s going really well. The best thing that worked for us is either let him wear underwear or to be completely naked from the waist down and to freely go on the potty when he needs to go Which is working much better coxo

We tries the 3 day method and had pee everywhere. Now we take her first thing when she wakes up. We get to crib fast before she has the opportunity to go in diaper. After 3 weeks she now pees anytime we put on potty and she goes right away. she learned the feeling and how to release.

I did early potty training. We teach our kids incontinence from birth so their muscles are so weak by the time they are toddlers... which is why potty training can be so difficult for them at that point while learning soooo many other things at that time in their life. We started anywhere between 14mths/16mths with our kiddos (they were walking and started showing problem solving skills) and they were potty trained by 18/19mths. Look into this with your next one! We work potty training early into our routine so they learn it as a part of the routine rather than something they can “decide” if they want to go or not. There are tons of books on it! Just a different perspective 🤷🏻‍♀️ we love not having those fights on the changing table and not having those stinky poops to change! Also saves TONS of money on diapers. I’ll also add that my kids stayed in diapers at night and for nap until about age 2.5 when we are many many mornings with a dry diaper. Night time is different, but when they go and can control it during the day, rarely do they wake up with a wet diaper even around 2yrs old bc part of our routine is going potty before bedtime.

Oh also those wet flushable Kleenex really help with the poos when you get to that stage. Sometimes the toilet paper just doesn’t get them clean enough. I find it easier to clean when they are still sat on the toilet potty rather than when they are stood up after.

I was a nanny to a four year old and he wore a pull up night diaper because some nights he would pee the bed. So maybe as he gets older he will wake up with a dry diaper. His doctor told the mom not to worry about the wet diapers in the morning because if during the day he was making it to the toilet then that’s all good

Good luck, it was absolutely hellish for about a month with my three year old, but she’s taken to it like a pro. She gives us loads of time to get her on the toilet now, and is willing to do a ‘magic wee’ on the toilet before we go somewhere. Yes all the right signs are dry nappies after a nap, hiding to do a poo in their nappy etc. My daughter was deathly afraid of the potty for some reason, and preferred to go straight to the toilet. We did a incentives like stickers for a pee and a small present for a poo. We also just put her in underwear and just stuck with it, they quickly realise that wees and poos in their undies is pretty uncomfortable. Stick with it you’ll get there

My Little Bird got a potty seat today. I'm a single mom, so he is always in the same room with me, bathroom included. He has been very interested in flushing the toilet and looking inside the toilet. I have been giving him a tiny sheet of toilet tissue that he can flush by himself. Ususally he just wipes his nose with it and when Mama is all done using the potty he can flush his own tp. Once, he took the tp and wiped himself over his clothing, which was a signal to me that he might be ready to at least explore the idea of using the potty. He has also had a few dry diapers in the morning (thanks for the tip!). My little is only 16 months. Truth be told, I probably could have trained him way earlier, but like you two, I wanted to make sure he was ready and not teaching him for my own selfish reasons. Diapers are expensive, annoying, and stinky. And I don't have a fancy diaper pail. 😆 I hope it is going well with the training. Thank you both for being so transparent and honest about your parenting.

We potty trained by putting regular underwear on and then a pull up over it. That way they can still feel the mess on them and get uncomfortable, but you don't have to clean up the mess :)

You should really make your own decisions on when to do things. Other people shouldn't tell you step by step how to raise your kids. Potty Training is unique to the kids themselves. There's nothing set in stone. As far as the nights go, you shouldn't be worried about that right now and it shouldn't keep you from daytime training. Nighttime always comes later, you really can't do anything about that unless you wake them up multiple times per night and it could be years later when night time diapers are done with.

I'm in the boat. My son hates diaper changes and your right about how nasty poops now. We started trashing his number 2 diapers outside because oh the smell. I've been pretty confident on most things with parenting. I was able to sleep train, take his pacifier early and take his crib away and put him in a big boy bed. But potty training is so overwhelming and I don't know how or when to start. Honestly I'm waiting for him to tell me he doesn't want to wear use diapers. He's in school right now and they take him every 2 hours to try and potty. I remember telling myself he was gonna be trained early but know I'm just like it's on his time not mine. I'm secretly hoping he's gonna come home from school potty train Lol 😂 good luck to us. I'm also nervous he's gonna poop or pee in the car or in public which I know will happen.

You can for sure do Potty training before they wake up with a dry diaper . Children are ready to potty train between 18 month to 24 month. Good to start at like 12 month . We started to put our then 13 month old on the toilet when she was about to poop. She picked it up and started to say poo poo at 15 month . We took off the diaper when she was 21 month old to see how she was going to do since she had started to pee in it. She picked it up and after 3 days she was potty trained. So at 21 month old she was potty trained. She still has a diaper at night. Sometimes it dry and some time it’s not. Our oldest also got dry around his 2 year birthday. We took of his diaper for a few days bc he had a rash. So to air it out he didn’t have a diaper . When he started to pee we put him on the potty ( which was in the room at all times) and said pee pee. Kept on doing that and he finally got it. With both children we first stared at home and put on a diaper when going somewhere. For about a week or so. The oldest had a diaper at night til 3 years old ( he was dry at 24 month during the days) . The diaper was full until we just stoped , and then he woke up instead to pee on the Toilet once a night. Still does at 5 years old . Our youngest child who turns 2 in a week still has a diaper at night and it’s sometimes is dry and sometimes not. She is fully dry during the days and has no diaper napping. Children are ready at around 18 month, the age where they copying everything you as a parent do. When they are between 2-2,5 years old the want to decide and do what they want to do, they noo and have more integrity. I’m a preschool teacher in Sweden and it’s harder to potty train a 3 year old . Then they are more attached to there diaper.

I just finished potty training twin boys who are 2 months older than Sonny. I also have a 4 year old boy...naked method is the best. Let him be naked in the house, he will figure it out in about a day. The twins no longer wear a diaper, even at night.

I did the weekend thing and got him underwear. Dinosaurs which he loved and was super excited. So he is potty trained pee only. He wears underwear all day. A pull up at night but always wakes up dry. But........ he WILL NOT poop in the toilet. He will ask for a diaper then tell me when he's done. We ask him if he wants to poop on potty and he says no. He will be 3 monday. Any advice on how to get him to poop please let me know.

My son is almost 20 😥 but I still remember he's first potty training. It was difficult at first. With a normal potty. And then I found a potty with music in it. Everytime when he pee'd or had the nr 2 the music went off. He started to dance. It took me 3 weeks. And he was going on the normal toilet. Maybe u can try it. Love from Morocco and the Netherlands (sorry for my bad english 😂)

My daughter started sitting in the potty at 18 months full clothes and with a nappy. By 20 months she would not stay dressed in the house and was always naked. Out of 5 pee’s she would do two went in the potty. Then it became more and more. By the time she was two I could not get a nappy in her so she become full day trained at 2 years. She will be 3 in August but still wears a pull up at night. She very much done it herself and I can only hope my second daughter will be the same. But I definitely think monkey see monkey do played a part in it and going around naked with the potty close by. Good luck with it

We are currently potty training our 2 1/2 yr old daughter. We did the bottomless method and it took about 3 days before she understood to hold in her pee and run to her potty and successfully pee in it. Then we reward her with a sticker (she loves stickers). As far as poo goes, she has only done it about 3 to 4 times in her potty but for some reason she is scared of pooping in it so she holds it as long as she cans or until her nap time and bed time which we still put a diaper on when she sleeps and then poos immediately in the diaper. We are on week 2 of potty training. It's definitely stressful but I guess patience is the key. Lol

Potty training is so difficult I feel your pain 😩 my daughter is now 4 years old so I went through it already but I still have to clean her butt after pooping but we’re almost there where she’ll be fully independent. How about making it fun for Sonny & throwing in some Cheerios in the toilet & have him aim his pee maybe he’ll like that. I do believe training a boy is a little more difficult but I’m sure you & Timmy will make it work. Hang in there guys #loveyourfamily

I know you said that you don’t want to reward him for going in potty , but , your life will be so much easier if u do, there is Evan a potty dance song that helps, I really don’t see where a little bag of cheap surprises would hurt , and if he goes in potty he gets to pick a prize , it has worked for thousands of mothers before you, just a suggestion, I’m not judging, you do what is best for your child!

Many people have different thoughts. I tried at 35 months (don’t judge me for saying months... I want to emphasize she wasn’t quite 3) with my daughter and it was a lot of cleaning for 2 days but then that’s it! Within a week she was fine. I think it’s just about waiting closer to 3 when they developmentally get it and just do what you said the don’t go anywhere and be prepared! Clean the floor before you clean him so he feels the discomfort... obviously not to be cruel but so he is like ohhhh so that just happened.... I don’t like it... I’ll say something next time! I also did the whole you get a treat every time you make it... only for a week. Mama... do what feel slighted right! AND what is right for him... might mean waiting a bit. I though just being interested was enough... nope didn’t work at 27 months... waited and bam it worked!
