*NOTE:* This has been pointed out by a few comments and after doing a bit of research on the topic, the FMV animation sequences were actually handled by a different company called "Studio Junio", while Toei Animation mainly just produced the cutscenes instead of really animating them. So this Sonic design is actually "Junio Sonic", not "Toei Sonic", apologies if this upset anyone! www.reddit.com/r/SonicTheHedgehog/comments/hfilp0/yall_its_officially_called_junio_sonic_now_not/ twitter.com/DryLagoon2/status/1276095011654950912
I just wanted to say I was HIGHLY offended at the “gay land” reference..... just kidding lol I still don’t know how the hell I found your channel but I’ve been a sub for a while. I FUCKING LOVE your commentary, your production value, etc. I guess I could go as far as to say, I’m kind of a fan. Please keep making videos. Sonic and Mario represent my ENTIRE childhood. The first game system I had was a hand me down Atari but the first brand new system I got was a Sega Genesis. My mom worked hella overtime to buy it for me for Xmas and it came bundled with Sonic 2. I enjoy watching reviews from the younger generation on these games bc with all of the games like Skyrim and GTA5, ppl don’t understand how AMAZING games like Sonic and Mario were when they were released. The 3D special stages in CD were out of this world at the time. Hell yeah I’m old as fuck but you brought me back to a much simpler time and I’m glad you enjoy these games as much as I did. I hope your channel continues to blow up, you deserve it man.
They also redrew many of the frames for the Sega CD version, which is why it looks weird compared to the original. You can see the perks of this more in the ending cut-scenes.

11:22 I'm gonna be the guy... It's Junio Sonic now. A team called Studio Junio worked on the FMV with minor assistance from Toei. A member of Studio Junio has asked us to refer to him as Junio Sonic to correctly credit the people who made the bulk of the FMV.
Ahhh my gosh, Junio, Toei, CD, Hesse, OVA, MAN OF THE YEAR AAAHHHHHH there are so many lanels for him and the fans still bicker about Eggman vs. Robotnik!
Just three reviews in and you’re on a roll! I think this video’s my favorite of the three that are currently uploaded. Your commentary once again takes the cake! Keep it going, Cooper-I’m excited for the next one! Sonic CD entering your life on my 12th birthday sounds funnily coincidental, I couldn’t help but imagine a scenario where I telepathically gifted you the Whitehead remaster which is what ultimately turned you into the Sonic fan (1007) you are today! 😂
A few things to add to the video in some way: -Sonic actually was actively looking for little planet in the intro according to the japanese story.(which is always the definitive plot for the Classic games, except for Sonic3....where it makes literally no sense. But that is a topic for another time) -Amy actually got on little planet before Sonic even arrived, yet was still looking specifically for him. You people say that doesn't make sense? Well, she canonically is an esper. Yeah, she literally just tried to predict the future with cards and it told her "You will find your love if you go to little planet" or something like that. -The original idea for timetravel actually was less annoying(no cutscene and easier access), but they could not do it back then. Fans actually made an option to restore it, but I cannot remember if it was part of the decompilation-thing or a regular mod. -On topic of the decompilation, it actually is the definitive version of the game, because it is basically the mobileversion with the better palettes of the PC-version. I think it lacks a few mainmenu-functions tho. Also F for the 3 cut levels of the game. Kinda sucks, but such is life.
40:00 There was a scrapped level that was supposed to come between Palmtree Panic and Collision Chaos. Not much is known about it aside from some scrapped enemies, but, considering the level parallels to Sonic 1, it likely would have been an old ruins stage similar to Marble Zone. It is my speculation that the hidden statue in Wacky Workbench was originally meant for the scrapped zone, because it has a style similar to something you'd see in a zone like Marble Zone. After the zone was scrapped, the creators of the game probably didn't want to lose the statue entirely so they placed in Wacky Workbench as an easter egg.
One missed opportunity with the soundtrack would be if they used the US boss theme for the bad future and the Japanese and European Boss theme for the good future
The iOS port of Sonic CD is so nostalgic for me. It was the first game I bought and downloaded for the iPod touch I got for Christmas in 2011. Sonic Pokémon and GTA are my favorite games so finally playing CD was great I didn’t have a GameCube or Sega cd
I'm honestly surprised the later ports of Sonic CD didn't have their own unique Drowning themes for each time period. Tidal Tempest in particular feels kinda odd without it? Love that Tails easter egg of him operating his favorite car, the Lotus Super Seven, though.
I had a Sega CD when I was a little kid. 😖😖😖 god I’m old. I remember when Sonic CD came out on Sega CD and then when it was available on PC in 96. I had just got a new computer in 96 and I begged my parents for it. We were too poor at the time. I begged my mom for Sega Channel too. Now I feel even older.
Now this one’s a goodie. And as a Sega CD owner myself: getting ahold of one isn't just expensive, but you also have to replace its capacitors (especially the first model). The system itself is the house for some nice RPGs, Snatcher if you could afford the English release and some better 4th gen ports of some Genesis games. (the moment you listen to Ecco on Sega CD, there is no turning back to the Genesis version music wise) Just remember to like...actually make your Genesis region free, otherwise, the Sega CD would just match its region. Can't wait to see how much you’d say about the GEMS driver in the Spinball episode.
Even tho you say you will avoid talking about the original version you said pretty much everything needed to explain that version (which is good for me 😀 so i cannot complain at all) Seriously 1 hour???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! One hour is NOT enough man. I need more sonic cd! Lol i love this game mostly because of the soundtrack and beautiful level colors. Amazing video! Btw for Android it's free with ads
This was one of the two Oshima-made console mascot games that was headed by Oshima himself, the other one being Blinx: The Time Sweeper. It's no wonder the presentation and soundtrack feel more "Sonic" than any other game in the series. Visually, it's Oshima's character. His vision, his blue boy.
40:29 holy cow! Im not mad but it actually made me stop what i was doing when i heard what u said lol it genuinely surprised me to hear someone have the balls to say that nowadays after youtubers being so censored for so long.
I love how the comment section is both a mixture of people saying "I love this game" and "I can't stand this game" This is such a hilariously divisive game, man.
Fun info: The version of Sonic CD I have on my computer has the original japanese opening song, don't know how it got here, but the lyrics are still here, and it's good
I have to admit, I am one of the kids you speak of that got scarred by this. 😭 I had my tv up loud and I was at home by myself too like, I was NOT OKAY for the rest of that day. Trying to figure out if that was the developers way trying to stop kids using cheats in sound test! 😂 Like the steroid Sonic was unsettling enough!
One of the best Sonic games and the fact that there's 2 great soundtracks is pretty unique. Time travel is awesome and unique too. This game would have been so cool to have as a kid in the early 90's. I played the game as an adult for the first time in 2005 through the Gems Collection and instantly fell in love with it. I played it to absolute death so in that sense the 2011 port was a bit late. Still bought it though.
in fact this game is what made see potential in sonic series to be better. this game makes me cry with ease what a master piece my favorite game of all time saying alot from a non sonic fan
The American soundtrack can easily be obtained by inserting the Sonic CD disc, the original, into a CD player. You can then rip the tracks to digital compressed audio if you want.
Hey, sorry to disturb with my ungrateful comment, but Toei Animation actually didn't work on the Sonic CD FMVs.. It was Junio, and thus, it's called Junio Sonic, not Toei Sonic.
4:27 The sonic gems version of sonic cd is actually the worst version of the game. It has really low quality sound effects, the special stages run too fast, tidal tempest is missing its underwater distortion effect, and the air bubbles are just all kinds of messed up.
I recently played CD on my phone and was just going for an emerald run, but Quartz Quadrant made getting a good future easy, so I did it. It was... Glorious. After that I could safely see why people liked CD. Wasn't a huge fan of it until now.
I know people probably want an original game but having a sonic genesis trilogy remade from the ground up with mania’s physics and what not I would rather that than just mania 2.
Actually got more information on R2 recently it was revealed that r2's name was dubious depths in fact it's also revealed that the music was actually made for the Zone the da Garden theme is actually the present theme for R2 there's also leftovers of the other time zone themes in the Sonic Remix album there's a brief remix of dubious depths Future themes both bad and good future
If I’m going to be completely honest, I really don’t like this game. I’m not saying that people are automatically stupid for liking it, and I’m not saying that I consider CD bad. But the level design combined with how the game wants you to time travel, the special stages, and a select few of the boss fights easily make it my least favorite classic Sonic game (I don’t count the Game Gear games, Knuckles’ Chaotix, or the Genesis / Mega Drive spin-offs as classic Sonic games).
I bet that he didn't know that the creator of sonic's design in the opening and endings in sonic cd said that Studio Junio did most of the work but toei were apart of this so now we all call him Junio sonic and hate the name toei sonic
1:00:37 Given what the JP/EU boss theme sounds like, I assume this image was intended to be comedic, which with this music, they did pretty well, but because the US boss theme is nightmare fuel, the image comes off as creepy instead. But regardless, solid video, I really like CD, in spite of it's flaws.
Did you know even tho after the three minute mark of not touching the controller when sonic normally kills himself.... If you do this next to Amy Rose in the first act she will hug Sonic latching onto him preventing him from the normal suicide. Sonic will not end his life when she's hugging him.
15:19 Wait, are those plants, or some form of Artificial Chaos Energy that happens to generate vegetation upon contact with the ground? See the yellow spark sprites that pop out of the canister before they hit the grass?
In my opinion, the boss fights go back and forth from insultingly easy to unbelievably frustrating on a moment’s notice; and because of that, I really can’t say that I like them.
Man I wish classic was still THE the design for Sonic he looks stubby and small just like regular hedgehog but still having traits that make them cool and pretty badassI get why they went to the change of but why didn't they stick to the jam design now he barely looks like a hedgehog
You summed up the time travelling in this game perfectly. Honestly this game succeeded more in the time travel concept than Marios fucking Time Machine.
Honestly, that’s about as low of a bar to clear as you can get, so that’s really not saying much. And honestly, I don’t think the time travel mechanic’s speed requirement is complemented by the level design most of the time.
Honestly I always liked the bad future songs more than the good future songs. Favorite song is Collision Chaos Bad Future. Quarts Quadrant Good Future is probably my least favorite song in the game. Kinda forgettable, definitely prefer the American version of that song. But personally not a big fan of CD. It's just too claustrophobic and chaotic with lots of really random level structures. It just feels like the game doesn't have the time to chill out and let the player do what they want.
