Every generation has a legend. Every saga has a beginning.
In May of 1999, audiences everywhere experienced the film that would forever shift the course of Star Wars. Fittingly written and shot with the working title Episode 1: The Beginning, The Phantom Menace has helped define the generational gap amongst Star Wars fans. Put simply, the old farts who lived and died by the OT thought this movie was ass. But 25 years later a new order of young adults, for whom Episode 1 holds special significance, has emerged to take their revenge. And I count myself among them. So to celebrate its 25th birthday, I want to discuss what works in The Phantom Menace, the great achievements George Lucas and company don't get enough credit for, and my admiration for its many iconic moments. Immense worldbuilding. Great Jedi characters (shout-out to my boy Qui-Gon). An absolute peak lightsaber battle. It's time to put some respect on the first chapter in Lucas's saga.

I had first seen The Phantom Menace when it first came out, and I was 30 years old, and huge life-long Star Wars fan. AND I loved every second off the Phantmo Menace when it came out and I love it just the same toiday.

I was a young teen but feel the same way. I’m curious though, how you feel about the Disney sequels?

Fun fact, if you play the Duel of Fates on spotify on your laptop, the song progress bar turns into a lightsaber

The passion project of 2024 is not Francis Ford Coppola's Megapolis, it has to be Sir Zac's "I Love The Phantom Menace (25 Years Later)". Truly honoured to have watched and listened to Zac's face, voice, hand gestures, and occasional clips & stills from the film. The footages of the hard-core fans at the start when the film was released gave me chills. The excitement was unreal! RU-vid owes a PROPER review for "The Phantom Menace" to the whole world since RU-vid wasn't around in 1999, and I was super pleased you made this. The enthusiasm is everywhere in this video, not to mention how you close it with a thought-provoking Qui-ton quote. In all honesty, I do like most of the prequels than the sequels, at least. But I was too much of a baby cinephile to call "The Phantom Menace" the worse Star Wars film. Given how much I've grown to liking critically low films or cheesy action flicks nowadays, I think a rewatch will probably change my mind because of your video essay and make me fearlessly appreciate the late style of George Lucas. Your hype with the practicality of the effects, and the action choreography performed by the real actors might make me change my mind. Thank you for your hard work Sir Zac 🙏

I absolutely ADORE this film. It holds such a special place in my heart. I love everything about it. It's one of those movies that I can pop in when I'm having a bad day and it just makes me feel better. I think one of the best things about the film is it's tone. There isn't this impending sense of doom throughout the whole thing. Often times the "beginning", the "beginning" being The Phantom Menace in the case of the prequels, of a story tends to be the most innocent part of it. That's what I love about the film, it's innocent. The Republic is still powerful and in charge and things haven't begun falling apart yet. The saddest thing that happens is Qui Gon's death but even that doesn't happen until the ending and he died a warriors death. The movie just has an incredible amount of heart and soul in it. You can tell when they were making the film, if you watch the "Making Of", that they really enjoyed themselves. Seeing Naboo for the first time in all it's gorgeous splendor was breathtaking. I especially love the scenes on Tatooine, those are my absolute favorite. We get to see a happy go lucky Anakin just living everyday life and I related a lot to him as a kid. Plus all of the different, unique and wonderful locations on Tatooine. If you ask me, Phantom Menace, and all of the prequels really, are masterpieces. Phantom Menace helped set the tone with how wonderful it was to grow up as a child throughout the 2000s, especially with all the fun TV commercials and merchandise. This was back when Star Wars was FUN, and I miss it. My goodness, DO I MISS IT. :( Reply

Loved this film! I just rewatched it. The continuous hate in the online world ended up having me abandon my appreciation for starwars all together, just to escape the negative bullshit. But now.. hmmm oh yes I do love Qui gon! Going his own way, living the way of the force. Also... since you mentioned the fight with darth maul without any dialogue.. It made me think that perhaps this was one of the films strengths as well. We don't know anything about Maul, and we never get to(during this film) I think that makes him so sinister, mysterious and intimidating unlike any other villain in any film I've seen(that I can recall). Anyway, cool video! May the force be with you :)

The original came out when I was a very young child so grew up on that trilogy. I could never understand the amount of hate this movie got outside of the person to person dialog and stiff acting from some. The story was incredibly solid and that was all Star Wars was. Incredible story telling that holds up to scrutiny. This is also the reason why I cannot stand Disney's Star Wars. It lacks solid story-telling and is easily dismantled.

I disagree. I think Phantom Menace and the other prequels can be picked apart if you want to pick them. apart. I think the storytelling is very uneven in the prequels. I don’t care about plot holes, though, which is why I think Last Jedi is the best since Empire.

@@MrShakespearefan It doesnt matter if you agree or not. I have picked apart the picking apart of the prequel stories for over 20 years. I have not heard a single argument about the STORIES that was not easily shot down. The only things wrong with the three movies are. 1. Lucas cannot write person to person dialog worth shit, as is the case in 100% of the movies where he and he alone wrote the screenplay. And some of that dialog is actually better than most total MORONS know...prime example, the Anakin/Padme dialog. The fucking character is in his teens and was raised by god damn mother fucking religious monks he isnt supposed to sound like fucking Don Juan. Take your typical teen awkwardness of a boy rarely around girls, toss in being raised by twats AND being in love and yes, you should get shit like "I don't like sand". 2. The acting can be stiffer than my cock when I wake up in the morning which is his directing flaw and is in other films he is the director of. 3. He went too far making Jar Jar a source of comedy. None of these things are oversll storyline related.
