@BoleDaPole
@BoleDaPole 2 года назад
Anakin was clearly going to do anything in his power to try and stop Padmé from dying, and the only way was to help Palpatine become emperor. The Jedi council could've made him a Master Jedi and he still would've joined the Dark side in the end. Seeing his mother die almost killed him, he wasn't going to let that happen to Padmé. But I wouldn't have to explain this if you had simply watched the films and paid attention to more than the shiny light sabers and " pew pew" action sequences but then again most prequal haters seem to be filmographically illiterate and need everything spelled out for them. Or maybe you've suffered an unfortunate brain injury which has crippled your memory, in which case I apologize and wish you a speedy recovery.
@hdns4
@hdns4 2 года назад
@@BoleDaPole Damn man. I wouldn't be talking shit about "needing things spelled out for you" when you're defending "Tell Don't Show: The Movie." And it seems like even after all that, you still didn't get it. Because no, if the Jedi council hadn't been a bunch of arrogant assholes, Anakin wouldn't have turned to the dark side. That's not a "hater" theory, that's literally a major point of this trilogy which has been emphasized in ancillary material like The Clone Wars tv series. Anakin's mistrust in the council and his disillusionment with the Jedi order is why he wasn't very conflicted in the end about purging them to save Padme. Again, the movie literally spells this out for you: Anakin: "I should have known the Jedi were plotting to take over." Obi-Wan: "Anakin, Chancellor Palpatine is evil." Anakin: "From my point of view the Jedi are evil." Obi-Wan: "Well then you are lost." So it seems like you can't understand anything even when the movie actually is spelling things out for you. That's pretty impressive.

There's a ton of proof, including an eyewitness account from the two Jedi you specifically sent to Naboo to settle this whole thing." 16:59 I think the reason why they gave the role to Qui-Gon instead of Obi-Wan is so that Anakin can get a chance to bond with Qui-Gon as a potential father figure, just for that to get stripped from him in the duel of the fates. Anakin really needed a father in Qui-Gon but instead Obi-Wan clearly only saw him as a brother, as he says in Revenge of the Sith
@directorforplastic7929
@directorforplastic7929 2 года назад
True, but I don’t think Qui-Gon needed to be arguably the main protagonist of this movie. He’s the only Star Wars character who is the protagonist of a film, but is also the mentor figure (ever other character is a young adult: Luke, Ep. II & III Anakin, Rey, Jyn, and young Han). I do agree that having him be a father figure to Anakin then having him die at the end forcing Obi-Wan to take him in is a good idea, but compared to Qui-Gon, Obi-Wan isn’t really that developed in TPM and has way less screen time than him. Which is weird considering he’s one of the main core characters for this trilogy while Qui-Gon was only gonna stick around for one movie. I think Anakin and Obi-Wan only say like 1 or 2 lines to each other in this movie, which is kinda silly given that their relationship is supposed to be part of the core of this trilogy.

Anakin should’ve been 12 or 13. The romance between Anakin and Padme will eventually destroy the galaxy, but in this movie the bond is maternal. The idea of romance is just icky. The trauma of being pulled away from his mother would’ve worked, a tween/young teen might front that they are okay on their own, but they’re not
@ColeBresnehen
@ColeBresnehen 8 месяцев назад
I think it being maternal is very deliberate. Even as fully grown adults Padme “takes care” of him in almost a motherly way. Anakin loses his mom, and seeks the guidance and peace she delivered, through Padme. This is quite common in the real world, and I don’t believe we’re meant to view their romance as “healthy”. Perhaps it coming across a bit icky is intentional. Anakin is hardly the first fictional character to have an Oedipus complex.

The concept of the Jedi being a decaying organization really has been retroactively pushed into people's consciousness thanks to The Clone Wars, but rewatching the prequels, they honestly don't even touch on it until ROTS, and even then, it's really half-assed by that point. I think it's something Lucas sort of had in the back of his head sub-consciously but hadn't been able to really bring it to the forefront of his mind yet. Each of the prequels desperately needed to have like three or four more drafts with proper feedback from other writers. There's something really good in there but it's buried so far underneath a tangled mess.

The central theme is Anakin will ‘bring balance to the force’, which he actually does when he destroys the council, but these themes go over most people’s heads as it’s not expanded upon enough. The plot and ideas in the movie are interesting, but the execution is just not there. The idea of duel of the fates is really cool, and if you read a plot summary or a wiki page about it, it seems like an awesome movie, but the issue is the direction and the editing and the moment to moment dialogue just does not pull the idea off at all. the idea of a relationship of "we work as brothers and friends but I don't know enough to teach you" is too nuanced to work with the writing in these movies. That's why I think so many people like these movies, because all they do is talk about the movies, they rarely sit down beginning to end and watch the movies without interruptions.

I was in hs when this movie was released, and the theater on opening night was one of the most joyful, excited, happy atmospheres I've ever been in with a big group of people. Strangers dressed in various character costumes reenacted scenes while were queued up waiting to go into the theater, and others staged lightsaber battles in the aisles as we waited for the movie to start. The roar that went up when that first note of the score played was defeaning--people gave the movie a standing ovation before it even started...and it's probably good they did, because it was an entirely different crowd that left when it was over. People weren't unhappy or angry by any means, I wouldn't even say they were disappointed yet. Mostly, everyone just seemed confused. There had been a new Star Wars film, the first one released in 30 years, and it had had some great moments like the lightsaber duel, but for some reason the audience who had just seen it felt unsatisfied, and at least with the fans who cared enough to see it on opening night, this was an extremely confusing feeling. We were totally expecting the movie to kick ass, and it totally didn't, and we didn't know how to process that. For a day or two, I think most people tried to tell themselves the movie was good, but eventually someone would say, "yeah but jar jar was fucking annoying," or "the kid who played anakin was fucking annoying," or "the dialog in this movie was even worse than the original Star Wars movies," and it would be the catalyst for people to admit the truth: the film is a visually beautiful piece of crap. Remember how in the original trilogy there was a subtle undercurrent of droids as a discriminated and dismissed underclass of completely expendable yet oddly sentient servants, right down to the ability to feel pain for some reason? Ever think about how that subtle allegory raised some interesting questions about our relationship with technology, our history of exploitation of our working class all the way back to days of chattel slavery? Then the prequel trilogy removes all that subtlety by just casually having human slaves as a thing that apparently still happens while completely failing to have anything to say about the subject (unlike the way the treatment of droids was in the originals), and was seemingly only included as a plot device the characters had to circumvent. And they only felt the need to circumvent it because Qui Gon wanted Anakin specifically, not because of his value as a human being, or because slavery was wrong, but because he conveniently fulfills a vague prophecy of plot contrivance. And then the odd absence of legal slaves after the rise of the empire raises some troubling questions about whether the only reason slavery seems to have ended in the galaxy is thanks to the Empire? Like the Old Republic and the Jedi were perfectly fine condoning slavery for centuries, then the Empire takes control for one decade and all of a sudden no more slavery. Which side were we supposed to be rooting for again?

@thefunk0130
@thefunk0130 2 года назад
@@andrewmcmillan229 And that would almost make sense, as in the OT, Tatooine was some backwater on the outskirts of the galaxy. Luke even says "Well, if there's a bright center to the universe, you're on the planet that it's farthest from". But the problem is that then in the Prequels, they completely disregard that and put Tatooine directly between Naboo and Coruscant; two extremely important centers of the Republic. They only did this as a plot convenience, with no regard for how little sense it makes for Tatooine to occupy such a strategically valuable location and still be a disregarded backwater by the Republic. For a plot that ostensibly centers on trade routes, this is a pretty strange thing to both include, and then ignore. It's certainly not an insurmountable problem to explain away, but it does show a certain carelessness with the established lore (which is par for the course), and yet another example of things just happening in the plot because the plot needed them to. The prequels needed the protagonists to end up on Tatooine so they could meet Anakin, and this was just the most convenient excuse. As for Jabba still having slaves, he was a crime lord. It makes sense contextually if he engages in morally reprehensible and criminal activity, taking hostages and prisoners and turning them into (sex) slaves, and feeding them to rancors. Watto, on the other hand, was just some average business man, and his ownership of slaves showed it was just a completely normalized thing. Qui Gon certainly isn't perturbed by it. Not to mention the entire slave economy for menial labor doesn't even make sense with the existence of droids.

The true tragedy of this trilogy is that there could have been the *kernel* of a good story buried within this Garbage-fire. An old but ultimately failing democracy that is causing Outer Rim worlds to secede-in increasingly violent and underhand ways (much like the way the Rebel Alliance broke away from the Empire), with a lot of help from Sith interference. A relatively young pilot/Jedi Apprentice who is driven to the Dark side mostly by a desire to bring order to the galaxy, and to end all the death and destruction the secession is causing (but who ultimately ends up causing more harm than good), A noble Jedi Knight who is sadly blind to the flaws in both his apprentice-and friend-Annikan, and the Order to which he belongs. A Jedi Order whose initial refusal to choose a side in the conflict ultimately leads to the Sith becoming dominant, and a Chancellor who is playing both sides against the middle, in order to gain complete control over the galaxy. Oh, and members of the Alderaan political elite (House Organa and their chosen senator, Padme) trying-but failing-to uncover the Sith conspiracy before it reaches fruition-namely the unleashing of the Clone Army against the seperatists on a level that comes close to genocide.

Acknowledging that the prequels are silly and weird and have goofy dialogue and CGI choices, I really do have an enduring love for the prequels. I love the major beats surrounding the Jedi, the deep decay of the order and the stagnation of its leadership cloaked in the a veneer of wisdom, the complacency that comes with being so close to the levers of power with little to no oversight, and the idea that they were so self righteous that they couldn't fathom that "bringing balance to the force" might actually mean that they might have to go I also love the trade federation, banking clan and techno union as villains, this acknowledgement that capitalism requires a parasitic relationship with the state, abusing democratic processes to legitimize their actions and protecting themselves from the reprisals of the people they exploit. But even further than that, exploring a situation where the state that was protecting them becomes so ineffectual that they decided it was more beneficial to secede from the thing wholesale, effectively burning their old host in an attempt to find a new one, and fucking over absolutely everyone in the process in their desire for greater profits But yeah, the actual movies are kinda scuffed. Pretty fun watches though

And it's even funnier seeing people's reactions to the new sequel movies mirror the reaction of the prequels when they came out - pretending that they're not cannon saying that they "destroyed" Star Wars, hating the actors, etc. I get the feeling that in 20 years time people will be doing this with the Star Wars sequels. The harassment that the actors (who gave George exactly what he asked for, btw) have had to endure is messed up. End of the day, this is George’s baby, and I believe the main problem is that there wasn’t a single person at Lucasfilm that was giving him honest opinions on the story and the very stuffy performances. This is what happens when you are surrounded by yes men. He really should have had someone else direct and write the screenplay. It would be intimidating, but I’m sure they could have found someone that could take this story (which is a good story) and make it into something that would have been a much more enjoyable film. This movie is full of great actors, so we know it’s possible. In the end, this led to The Clone Wars animated series, which is the best thing to come out of the Prequel era. I hope the Disney+ Obi-Wan show will be great and give Ewan, and Hayden as well, a real chance to shine. I’m looking forward to it!

Yes, George Lucas is ultimately responsible for everything that was good or bad with the prequel trilogy, but during the original trilogy he had Gary Kurtz, his wife, and others, including the screenwriter, to take his ideas and make them better. It was a collaboration. He didn’t have that during the prequels. He was surrounded by people telling him how great everything was. Was this by choice? Probably, but I find it hard to believe that not a single person pulled him aside before or during production to say, “George, this isn’t very good. It’s too slow. Too stiff. All the political science stuff in an adventure film aimed at kids? You’ve got a great cast here and you haven’t directed a feature in nearly two decades, maybe let someone else do that part, and you edit the final films?” He’s actually very good at that, editing. Most actors that had worked with him said he’s not good with actors. Here is the actuall story of the Mace Windu guy on Naboo: That guy at Naboo was Maze Window, not related to Mace Windu at all, not even a Jedi. He was just minding his own bussiness on Coruscant when Palpatine walked up to him and ordered him onto the ship that was going to Naboo. It was not clear if Palpatine knew that he was Mace Windu or not, but Yoda witnessed this and felt some weird darkside energy emanating from Palpatine in that moment and took notice of this. Later on Naboo, as they prepared to leave the ship Palpatine called Maze by his name, ordering him to walk in the back, even behind the aliens, even the long headed one. Yet again Yoda took this into account and therefore told Yaddle about this, both being perplexed over why Mace was told to walk behind them when he in fact outranked most of the people in that conga line, and in rank was the closest to Yoda himself. Maze however did not think much of the happenings at all, on Coruscant he was out for a stroll in his morning robes actually looking for any excuse to get off planet. Maze Window was a simple minded man suffering from either a form of early onset dementia or an extreme lack of sleep so that the symptoms just matched, and he wanted off planet because he was on the run from his caretakers. When Palpatine ordered him to board the ship, he didn't hesitate or even say a word, he just walked aboard. As they later landed on Naboo Maze followed behind, as he was told, and later kept on walking in a direction that seemed like the best one to him. Nobody noticed this, not even Yoda. As they were later lifting that glowing orb thing in celebration Maze Window was nowhere to be seen, but this did catch Yodas attention and he goes to look for him, in the end, finding only his left shoe. However, Yaddle, staying close to Palpatine back at the celebration notice some strange behaviour, first thinking it's signs of darkside powers makes an even more troubling discovery about the Senator. This discovery is later told to Yoda, as he returns back to the celebration with the one shoe of the lost man Maze Window. And it is this discovery about Palpatine that would be what clouds Yodas judgement about the Senator in the later two movies. As Yoda and Mace is informed by Obi-Wan about the Clone army in the second movie, Yoda is quoted as saying "Only a Dark Lord of the Sith knows of our weakness. If informed the senate is, multiply our adversaries will" after Mace Windu suggest that they should tell the senate that the Jedis powers are diminishing. Mace is confused by everything Yoda says on a regular basis and was in this instance as confused as always or even more, as he had no idea what Yoda was actually saying. Mace could never have known the true meaning of Yodas words in that moment because only Yoda and Yaddle knew about the discovery that Yaddle had made that day on Naboo admist the celebrations. The powers of the darkside was a true presence and only grew stronger as Yaddle closed in on the celebrating Palpatine, they had just raised another glowing orb and had their guard down, like there was something in the air that made them all loosen up and relax, laughing and smiling at everything. Yaddle had not been as effected, as she had not raised any orbs herself. She carefully walked, fake mingling with people, steadily getting closer to Palpatine, and then she heard it. Palpatine was spouting a bunch of nonsense about black people all looking the same when someone had asked him why Mace Windu was not at the celebration and that the guy on the ship had not been Mace Windu. Yaddle was asstounded by the news of Palpatine being a racist, maybe even a white supremacist symbol. Yaddle told Yoda everything she had heard and they both were disgusted, but Yoda, not as much as Yaddle would have thought. Yoda was quoted as saying "after all, politician he is". Since that moment Yoda knew that Palpatine was evil, that he looked down on, maybe even hated, people of color. But Yoda could have never imagened just how much hate there was in that man, not just for people of color, but for everything and everyone that was not him. So what happened to the poor man that got left behind on Naboo, tricked by the Dark Lord himself, what happened to Maze Window? He left the celebration and got his foot stuck in some big doo-doo and accidentaly, trying to free himself, pulled his shoe off, falling backwards, tumbling, rolling down a hill, getting covered in dirt. His robes getting all torn and sullied, as he fell all the way down to the swamps of Naboo, outside of the city. He couldn't get back up again so he started walking. He didn't get far as he was already, before all this, so tired, only working at about 40% he decided to take a well earned nap. He suffered from night terrors though, so he was hesitant and didn't really want to fall asleep. The night terrors were caused by visions of what he dreaded could actually be his future, and he would often wake up sweating in his bed. But as he laid down on the swampy dirt, he drifted off to a dreamless night, or day, as it was daytime when he fell asleep. He didn't wake up screaming about "a bigger fish", no, he woke up with a smile. Maze Window would later go for a swim in the lakes of Naboo to wash off all the dirt he had on him from rolling down that incredibly long hill - and Maze Window would never be seen in the Star Wars universe again.

I actually really like Episode 1. Definitely in my top 5 Star Wars movies. Everyone says Qui-Gon is a terrible character but the more I think about it, he would have been the perfect teacher for Anakin and if he didn't die Anakin would have been just fine. Qui-Gon goes against the council a lot and has little respect for them (they share the same goals but have different methods to achieve them). Obi-Wan was too by-the-book and didn't question any order he was given. Anakin questioned every decision and Obi-Wan was just like "show some respect" whereas Qui-Gon would have taught Anakin how to do things the way he wanted that also fit with the council's goals. The pod-racing scene is an amazing set-piece of special effects and sound design. Holds up really well today. It's not too long, had a good build-up and was really fun. Duel of the Fates (iconic music) and the fight against Darth Maul is still probably the best lightsaber duel in the whole film series. It's far from perfect (Jar Jar and all his scenes are bad, dialogue is awful etc.) but it's the best of the prequel movies and is still pretty exciting despite the boring Trade Federation plot.

I was a very young child who loved star wars when I first seen this so I've always been lenient with it. I thoroughly love this movie. That being said i never heard that obi-wan was sposed to be the lead instead of Qui-gon and I kinda wish that version existed

The theory is that if Qui Gon had lived he would’ve raised Anakin properly to not murder all the Jedi. I also think that Mace Windu could’ve raised him properly if he wasn’t so dismissive of Anakin the first time they met.

Firstly, Mace Windu would have been a terrible Master for Anakin. He may have been able to keep Anakin farther away from Palpaptine but he clearly never trusted him from day 1. When the Council decided that Obi-Wan would train Anakin only Yoda and Mace Windu still voted no. He didn't even think he should be trained so placing him in his care was probably a bad idea. It's hard to bond when you don't like each other. Second, the theory is a little deeper than that. With Qui-Gon's death Anakin lost a father figure that he could look up to. Yes, Qui-Gon would have trained him better as he was free of the corruption of the Council and understood the Will of the Force better than them who were losing their connection to the Force. It's more than that however, Obi-Wan surviving meant that he would train Anakin, a job he was not ready for but felt obligated to do since he did promise Qui-Gon he would. Obi-Wan became more of an older brother to Anakin leaving that need for a more parental role to be filled by Palpaptine. Paps didn't even need to train Anakin himself which would have been hard since he had just taken over the Senate, not much time to train a new apprentice from scratch. He just sat back and told Anakin what he wanted to hear about what a great Jedi he would be and those emotions you feel are fine in fact really feel them. That also left him free to recruit Dooku and kick off the Clone Wars. This really was the worst outcome.

@@dansharp2860 I agree. I think Mace Windu would keep Anakin on a very short leash at first, but just imagine if Mace had taught Anakin to harness the dark side the way he does. I actually think Windu’s fighting style would suit Anakin really well, and maybe over time after seeing how capable Anakin is he would begin to trust him more. Anakin would probably still be frustrated with the Jedi, but I think it would end in much less bloodshed compared to the outcome we got in the films.

All those theories are dumb, no mentor would stop Anakin from being stupid and Palpatine's influence

@@Reverse_Hood Well , at the very least they could have helped him to reign in his emotional instabilities and attachments, as that's part of what made him so susceptible to Palpatine It's worth contrasting with Luke's journey in ROTJ. Luke nearly struck down his own father due to his attachment to his sister, but then was willing to selflessly throw away his lightsaber in an act of compassion. It was Luke's compassion, not attachment, that brought his father back to the light :)

@@Reverse_Hood Qui-Gon would have greatly lessened the need Anakin felt for a parental figure in his life that Palpaptine exploited to then have influence over him. Although, I'm not certain the outcome of Jinn/Kenobi/Maul could have ever been different from what it was. What happened was likely the Will of the Force to create the circumstances to bring Balance.

I guess I somehow MISSED the trailers for this movie as a kid, because when I was in the theater and that second blade came out of Darth Maul's lightsaber I LOST MY MIND.

Phantom Menace is full of good ideas that are executed in an incredibly wooden and ineffective fashion (and sometimes, recalling racial stereotypes from his youth.) A big reason why The Clone Wars animated series worked is that Lucas' ideas were filtered through creators with a far better understanding of characters and dialogue.

I don't think they are even good ideas for a Star Wars movie. To do politics, you need a TV show like Babylon 5. The rise of the emperor needs to be 30 hours minimum.
