I like this game, and I haven't played it on the channel yet, so here it is. I think Zelda 2 introduces a lot of neat concepts and ideas that and I wished they used on other games.
Sound off in the comments below: Do you like this game? Do you NOT like this game?

Thanks for watching my video! What's your experience with this game? Have you ever beaten it?

I still owned this game and my most favorite game to!! I just loved the sound it makes when link unlocked those gate/door in the palaces.

Those old school sound effects were great.

My family had this game when I was a kid, but if I ever played it I never got very far. One of my older siblings played it, so I have fairly clear memories of him going through the first three palaces. It took me another decade before I got to sit down and properly enjoy it. Nowadays of the Zelda games, this is the one I have the most confidence in beating fairly cleanly. Even posted my own playthrough of it a few years ago.

Very cool. I had a similar experience. Games took way longer to figure out before Internet walkthroughs. When the newer Zelda games came out, I had to stay off RU-vid or else I'd get spoiled.

1:26:03 this is the screen for lvling up and gaining max lives. Cast fire and kill the eyeball over and over again.

If a player is patient, the flying skulls can be reasonable exp.

I used to be better at avoiding them, but that's just one of the skills I lost through age. :D

@@dionelr would it be fair to assume that you were saving the task of completing palaces for extra lives? That was my usual strategy, along with repeatedly killing the flying eyeballs in the palace surrounded by water (using the fireball spell that is). Haven't played the game in quite a while.

@@WilliamScavengerFish I always forget the trick in palace 5 with the eyeball. But yes, I save them for later to save time getting those higher levels.

This is rather like final fantasy and and final fantasy 2 in that the second game was an experiment and a deviation from what would become the standard. Sometimes it is beneficial to try different things. Other times, it doesn't work out well (for various reasons, some trivial and some not).

I love this game too. Not my favorite, but it is unnecessarily hard. which is why people don't like it 😅

*slams table* HOLD IT! Are you aware of the PHENOMINAL zelda II ground-up remake by Hoverbat for PC? It adds a ton of content, rounds out some rough edges, and is an incredible experience, ESPECIALLY if you're used to the original! Please please PLEASE check it out!

ooh. Not what I was thinking but that brings back some memories. They don't make spy shows like that anymore.

I like this game. I just don't think it's a good Zelda game. If that makes sense.

I totally get that. It would have been better to develop these mechanics for some other property.

I too have a soft spot for Zelda II. Several games followed shortly after Zelda I with more full blown RPG mechanics (Final Fantasy, etc.) they used not only more RPG elements (XP) but a more zoomed out overworld with a cut to side view for turn based combat. This model gave the games an even “grander adventure” feel because the world could be much larger. I feel like Nintendo wanted to chase these ideas for Zelda after seeing those other series, but knew that real time combat was too key to Zelda to make the game turn based. In retrospect it was not the right move for the series. The success of subsequent games makes it feel like an even more wrong decision than it seemed at the time. But the game also has a lot of really good things, and I feel like a lot of what they tried to do with the story, levels, enemies, etc was a really good idea, but doesn’t translate well until you can do a full over the shoulder 3D. Reimagining any other Zelda game feels like sacrilege, but I feel like you could fairly easily re-imagine this game in a BOTW style, softening a few of the RPG aspects (replace the XP system with a rupee economy for upgrades, etc) and this would make the game much better and fit better with the rest of the series.
