I remember being at school in 72 ( I was 14 years old ) and I was listening to Rod Stewert etc and all that stuff…and some nerdy bloke in the class said “ have a listen to this “ I laughed and said I’ve never listened to any of Jimi’s stuff and probably never will ! Anyway I graciously accepted his offer and took the album home and played it and played it and played it ……The album was Electric lady land … It changed my life, awoke my listening senses , made me grow up musically ….I continue to listen to all of the great man’s music …I flew to Washington to see the white Strat in Paul Allen’s museum and then on to Seattle to pay homage at his grave. That nerdy mate became one of my best buddies and we constantly exchange opinions on which track is Jimi’s finest …….There are so many but for me here are a few of my favs….Peace In Mississippi, Trashman, Electric lady land, The stars that played with laughing Sam’s dice, Vodoo Child , Jam 292 and so on. Thanks for this great lesson today Pilgrim it is a great testament to the man . So much has been said about Jimi but for me he remains unequalled, unparalleled and totally unique. As they say “ There will never be another”….JMH.

Drifting has to be my "favourite" for heartbreakingly gorgeous interwoven melodies. Jimi was truly the most gifted musician of the 20th century, he had it all and was so humble. He was so very very special!. Great video btw, Peace.

Jimi was a master when it came to playing beautiful guitar. Especially in the Studio. This is one of his best, short tho it may be. I would love for you to play more of these. May This Be Love, One Rainy Wish, Castles made of Sand, Angel, Little wing, Drifting.. even Bold as Love.. so soulful. Too me it's sad so many never hear these. Thank you Thom.. It's fun to watch you break these down the way you do.

@crowhaven200

@@BarbarraBay Then I am sure I saw it. Pilgrim is a Jimi fan and has lots of good videos on Jimi. He even showed the chord progressions for some I mentioned, and more. I am getting old and forget things. Hard to keep track of it all. I just think its a shame the younger generations never hear that beautiful side of Jimi. Almost everyone has heard Purple Haze and Foxy Lady. There is so much more to hear. Jimi was just getting started.. then he was gone.

Wonderful lesson, you've got really, _really_ good "Hendrix hands". Been at it a long time, and like you, Jimi was one of my biggest influences. I know quite a few of his signature bits very well, but the timing on this one has always made it rather elusive to me. Thanks much for the wonderful breakdown.

Danke an Guitar Pilgrim.

This is that part. The guitar part from the album is different, and has at least one overdubbed guitar part. Then a lead part. Very different. This is the solo guitar instrumental studio version that has been on bootlegs at least since the 80’s. There’s a part in Funky Monks, the doc about Red Hot Chili Peppers recording the Blood Sugar album, where Frusciante is playing this on a bootleg tape he had. I think it inspired the Sir Psycho Sexy Outro part, at least a bit. It’s such a great piece.

One of my favourite Hendrix songs is 'Somewhere' (there is a wha wha version on People, Hell & Angels). Before Chas Chandler quit Electric Ladyland, I heard he disapproved of Somewhere. Therefore, possibly Jimi forgot about it. I listen to Electric Ladyland in this order: Gods. Have You Ever Been, Long Hot Summer, Gypsy Eyes, Crosstown, ComeOn, Somewhere (from PH&A), Midnight Lamp, Voodoo Chile, sides 3 and 4 as they are. ✨✨✌

Hendrix often exploited open strings in his rhythm work. In songs like “Hear My Train a Comin',” “Hey Joe” and “Voodoo Child,” the guitarist used double-stops, trills, slides and other embellishments amidst open-string drones.
