Fun story, I got this game when my dad was deployed overseas, and man did the ending fuck with little me. Having to say goodbye was so rough, and having to say goodbye in the game destroyed me for a bit. I never knew the post game existed because I kept turning off the game before or during the credits since I couldn't take it. I eventually stuck through, and getting to the end of the credits was so rewarding for baby me. Made me feel a lot of things, and it helped me deal with saying goodbye to my dad, at least until he came back a few months after I beat the game.

Something I found neat about the Switch remake is that Absol had more characterization even after joining the team, and the same is applied to the partner in the postgame. It was a nice addition to breathe a bit more life into those characters even after joining the team.

Fun fact, in PSMD, the recruitment system allows you to meet up with one Pokémon of each species/unique form, in some cases featuring Pokémon from previous games in the series, through a mechanic called the Connection Orb, which shows links between different Pokémon - For instance, Grovyle being linked to a Shiny Celebi, being the same two from Explorers. In Gengar's case, he has a direct link to Ekans and Gardevoir, the latter of whom is linked up to the Medicham and Lopunny of Team Charm, meaning Gardevoir from Rescue Team and the Gardevoir of Team Charm in Explorers are the same individual - It's somewhat implied that Team Meanies didn't actually get back together in the end, and Medicham and Gardevoir went on to form Team Charm together after the events of the game! PSMD has some neat details like that, and while there are certain mechanics from the older games that I prefer to Super's, the Connection Orb especially feels like a love letter to the series as a whole. Would recommend giving it a shot if you ever consider picking it up :0

There is something about the last Gardevoir dream sequence line that I never see get talked about. When I played this game when I was young, the game assigned me the "timid" personality. In the personality description, it mentions that "those who know fear are those who know true courage." When Gardevoir mentions in that dream that you were brought into the world as a hero, because "what we sought was not power merely for display, we sought true courge"... holy shit. That blew my fucking mind how the game was able to reference my reason (personality) for playing my character that late into the game. Like that portal to the pokemon world at the beginning was real and because I knew true courage, I was chosen to save this world and become a pokemon. Call it silly but it felt like validation that I chose to play this game and become a hero. Next level immersion for this kind of game. And the shame is that this special connection only seems to apply if you get the "timid" personality. I wished the game did something similar with all the personalities you can get, but this little connection will forever be part of my experience with this game and I'm thankful for it.

Dude, your humor and passion are equally in sync. Love it. Also, mad good irony that you got a Normal type as your character. That’s a great contrast to Gengar, like they can’t “touch” each other, since they’re both human. Just a coincidence, but I love shit like that.

Red Rescue Team's ending is one of the only segments in media that have ever made me cry (even to this day), and I think that made your comment on it potentially being a sort of meta commentary on how people view games they complete really resonate with me. There's plenty of games that I enjoyed plenty but will likely never play again for various reasons, which makes the games that I can easily replay from start to finish (like Red Rescue Team!) feel that much more special to me.

I've been playing through the game recently, and I still get emotional watching some of those cutscenes. I'm sure like a lot of people these games were my first taste of randomness and roguelikes, which led to it being one of my favorite genres. On this watch though I noticed Gengar mention the "irreplaceable friend" relation to Gardevoir, which mirrors our relation to our partner pokemon in this game.

Thank you for another cool ass video. Loved your analyses of the main story and post game endings. This was a really cozy revisit of this game for me, and I appreciate that. I remember loving Blue Rescue Team when I played the shit out of it for the first time when I was like 9 or 10. Despite that, I never really revisited the game again or even played any of the other PMD games. It's especially weird, because I'm really into many rogue-likes nowadays (mostly the popular shit everyone has played like BoI, Hades, Gungeon, etc lol). I think I will finally emulate Explorers of the Sky now because I've been putting that off for too damn long. That game is so frequently recommended to me. Thanks again, and keep up the good work!!

If you like PMD, there's also a ton of other non-Pokemon mystery dungeon games, many of which were made by Spike Chunsoft as well. The Shiren games and Etrian Mystery Dungeon being excellent ones made by Spike Chunsoft. Compared to the Pokemon titles, these games normally have a much higher difficulty curve, and feature some kind of crafting or equipment melding system. Greater emphasis on traps or gimmicks. It appeals to certain individuals. Gensou Wanderer is a personal favorite (developed by Aquasoft), but it mostly appeals to touhou nerds.

This is a very sweet little video. I really can tell that you care about this game a lot, and that's really cool. I've played bits and pieces of this game before, but only the first few dungeons so I have never gotten to the proper meat of the game, but I'll probably try it out again eventually. On the subject of roguelikes, I was thinking about what you said about this being your introduction to roguelikes, and it kind of got me thinking about my own introduction to the genre. I have some older cousins, and two of them in particular are big nerds for PC games. I remember being like 10 years old and having my older cousins tell me about these weird games where you lost all of your progress when you died and the levels were procedurally generated, and it blew my little mind because I had never really played anything like that and I found the notion of permadeath absurd. The first roguelike I ever watched my older cousins play was Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup, a pretty traditional roguelike experience. I think its interesting to think about how our initial introductions to a concept shape how we engage with it. Like, how differently would I engage with the genre if I started with Mystery Dungeon? On a slightly different note, roguelike storytelling is kind of interesting because most roguelikes don't really focus on it. At least, they usually don't have much in the way of distinct characters, with arcs, in a non-mechanical sense. It makes sense, it would be really cumbersome to have to experience the same dialogue over and over again if your progress reset. In that regard, PMD is very interesting because it does commit to a fully story, which is something you don't really see often in this style of game, and from the sounds of it, its actually quite well written and I enjoyed hearing about it. Once again, great and cozy video!

really fantastic video. the bit at the end where you talk about it feeling like something you can always come back to and see your old friends and relive this story really resonated with me. these games just have such a genuine sense of wonder and adventure to them, i feel like they occupy the same niche of things like Treasure Island did in their own time. Something that you can read/play as a kid but still enjoy on that same genuine level as an adult because of just how resonant their stories are, who doesn't love a tale of a grand adventure with a loyal friend. especially as someone who was deep in the trenches of like, the PMD RP boards and fanfic communities and shit back in the day I always just get such a way fuzzy feeling replaying them. also the remake of this game was actually so great. unlike a lot of the other recent pokemon games it actually had an ART STYLE. groundbreaking stuff. like they replicated the watercolor artwork from the original box art and menus it's sweet. the gameplay upgrades are also really fantastic (and if you do want to play it without giving nintendo any cash it plays perfect on Yuzu). i totally get liking the original sprites better though okay last thing i promise but you gotta play gates to infinity dude that game is peak. the writing and characters and setting are the best in the series and you get to build a little town it's so great. also dunsparce is in it

words can’t describe this game. it was my introduction to both console games and rpgs when i was around 6-7 years old (i am now 24) on my red ds lite. it really impacted me as a kid and i notice it somewhat affected my perception of people (aside from childhood trauma): the unsettling nature of gengar, the questioning of identity and purpose by gardevoir, the unpredictability of the natural world, the relief points with deity-like figures like ninetales and other legendaries letting us know we are so brave, the companionship of your partner and from the others in town square. the emotional impact this game had on me- now i realize the time for sensitivity is needed more than ever in this world. ego is taking over and this game quite honestly, breaks down your ego, maybe even more so if you played it as a kid imo. i’m so fortunate that it was my first true video game experience. also, i plan to get into the mother series. i’ve known about it for a long time but never delved into it, and i find many similarities with it and this series. beautiful game and none will be just like it (explorers as well). i agree, i love you too mystery dungeon!! ♡

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon and Undertale / Deltarune were the games that impacted me the most during my childhood. I got into the Mother series during the last few years and it truly gave me a really similar feeling. To me, these games and their stories feel like they are trying to make you remember to always be the best person you can possibly be, not only for yourself but for others as well, and that is something really valuable to me. I really love all of these games ^^

The newer Switch one is more of a requel than a remake. It mixes the Rescue Team story with the mechanics of the Explorers games, minor tweaks from the eShop games, redoes the town layout, a few story beats were tweaked to make room for some additional content but not enough to change their meaning. There's a second post-game story on top of the usual post-game story of a PMMD, AND the usual massive post-postgame grind for the final boss. It's overall a better game, even if the 3d models take away from it's charm a bit.

Your video got me to play it too!) and now Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Red Rescue Team, these games hold such a big part of my heart for being a core memory of my childhood, and every single video you make of them does great justice to them, no over the top editing but great quips thrown here and there, and you do a great job at showing the magic of the games you review.

Glad this showed up in my sidebar, I love this game. Also strongly vibe with the whole: liking the interior redesign, but not the my face is now my house renovation. Great video, thanks.

Goddammit I can’t get through a Mystery Dungeon video with the ending without tearing up a bit. The absurdity of it makes me laugh while crying. Such good games. They deserve a sequel 😆😭

ive never played this game, and english isn't my native language so when i was a kid most of the games that i had were basically an enigma. at the time i couldn't know how much was subtracted from the experience of playing a cool story driven game, but there were exceptions. i had a stuart little game for my ps2 and somehow it was dubbed in portuguese from portugal, which was weird but understandable, and just because of the fact that i could interact with the characters and hear what they had to say was a big part of why i like video games so much. your videos are really nice dude and i think you're cool. i actually never played any pokemon game in my life. which is probably odd but this video actually made me tear up and really consider playing it. thanks man for real. although i will probably cry while playing it lol (also one of the best moments of this site was that part in one of your videos that you said that few things hit the spot like a ryo fukui album and a pack of good menthol cigarettes late at night that shit is true lol) thanks for making your videos! it makes the world a better place.

Friendly reminder that this game still has an active fan base even though in recent years the most substantial content was a (albeit good) remake of the first game, but nobody cares cause the games are just that good.

as someone who has played all the main release mystery dungeons (just haven’t finished Gates) man they’re all so great. tears abound, honestly. even watching the end of this video i was fighting to not burst into tears in the middle of this airport. by the way, anyone who reads this: Super Mystery Dungeon is Super worth playing, it’s so good.

Thank you, Lute. I'm not suspecting you to be the type that does this for the attention, but for what it's worth you deserve an audience as large as you hope to reach. You radiate so much love and soul when you speak on what you care about, it's a sincerity sorely lacking in most mediums and while kinda cringeworthy I did just want to take a moment to say thank you for doing what you do. 😎 rock on or whatever, keep being you

I cant explain how much this video has moved me. Pokemon Mystery dungeon was my very first game in the series before black and white or diamond and pearl. I remember how much this game meant to me, the experiences i had. The tears i shed once defeating the ending. While i still play pokemon to this day, i often go back to the sprite games like Mystery dungeon. It was my introduction to the series and will always be my favorite, and watching this video made me put in my blue rescue team. As i played it all over again, and cried at the ending once more. While i originally had red rescue team was my first one. I did buy blue resuce team as a kid with my own money. Lute, i wanna say thank you. This video and the rest are amazingly done, but this one will always be my favorite.

The ending of this game is actually true, your role as a pokemon IS over, because the game has ended, and you DO have to return to the human realm, but still, you will never forget your partner.
