Pretty sure this guy was featured on “Borrowed Future” and he definitely took the advice. It shows the apartment he lived in and everything. He had it down to 600k at that point. I feel bad for him this is a hard situation.

Dave is actually 23 years old. However taking on the stress of his callers’ debts has aged him to a middle aged man.

I owed 440k after dental school - no residency. My payment was 4500 a month for 25 years. I wasted 3 years trying to”income based” and trying to even mentally process the debt amount. Then I moved to rural area and lived on my husbands 60 k income and put my yearly 180k ( after tax) income all into the debt. And after 2 years i began to breathe a little. I still owe 60k though haha. My body aches from overworking past 7 years and i think i was suicidal every other month but i made it. Nobody understands this kind of debt - student loans go to grave with you and no bankruptcy. DONT GET INTO THIS KINDA DEBT. Being a doctor is not worth it because you will handle doctor level stress with NO gratification whatsoever.

This is tough. I feel so sorry for him. A lot of advice us students are given is to just get the degree and worry about paying it off later and then we're told not to work and just focus on school and this is the result unfortunately.

Every call like this makes me that much happier that my $20k student loan debt led to a job where I made $55k-70k + benefits. I paid off the student loan in about 18 months.

This shouldn’t happen. We need orthodontists, doctors, medical professionals. Why do we punish people with A MILLION dollars of debt and interest for pursuing these fields? This is horrible. It’s not like the guy went a million into debt for a nothing degree. We wonder why people don’t want to have kids, why we have a shortage of medical professionals, etc. absolutely criminal that universities and student loan companies are allowed to do this to people. It terrifies me that the problem will only get worse with time. Pretty soon no one will be able to see a doctor because there won’t be any, because we have allowed this to happen. Why would anyone in their right mind saddle themselves with this much debt? Few will I’ll bet, and we will be in trouble when we can’t see a doctor. As for your last comment Dave - that’s a bad take. I’d understand if he got an art degree, but this man is going into the medical field to help others. We ALL need doctors and setting people up for failure with that much debt will have consequences for decades.

Student loan debt is the worst mistake that most young people make. I’m glad I dropped out of school in the 10th grade and got to work actually making money instead of partying and dreaming in school.

I remember graduating with $105k student loan as a Pharm.D back 10 years ago… oh boy the excitement of getting your schooling done quickly replaced by the anxiety of paying this 105k loan. At least I got it paid off in 1.5 years working 50 hours a week earning 180k-200k a year. A million student loan debt ? Oh my god I would have died.

This is an oldie but a good one. A lesson for students: be prudent about what you are borrowing, and pay the interest along the way to keep the balances from growing. My kids have loans and are still in school. I pay just the interest, and more when i can. We've already paid a few off. Your loan servicer shows you how much interest has accumulated and you can calculate it each month. At least pay that. Hopefully this guy made some progress during the COVID pause.

It’s crazy that student loan debt isn’t tax deductible, it’s the epitome of a thing you need to purchase before you can make money in your trade. 401k can come out of your paycheck before taxes so you can save for retirement, but we’re gonna tax the shit out of the money you need to pay off before you can start your retirement. I don’t even have student loans, this is just absurd.

My dad in law was a perpetual student and took out 300,000 and lived off of disability and food stamps. His wife was allowed to finish her degree and get a teaching job. I don’t know how, they are not required to pay the loan back. For our government to allow that makes me angry.
