So he has a settlement of over a million and makes a little under $200k but can't find a way to pay the $150k in debt down/off? Sounds more like his emotional health is holding him back.
@HamiltonRb
@HamiltonRb 2 года назад
Agree, this guy is no mental state to be haggling with creditors at the moment. For the amount he will save on debt, and the emotional toll this is taking, I would pay a lawyer to get this settled asap for lowest amount, and focus on his mental well being.

When I first heard the caller I thought he was 150k in debt and barely making ends meet.. when he said he was getting a million dollar settlement I just had to shake my head and think to myself "what is wrong with this guy, use that money to pay it off and regain control of your life". Some of these calls are just no-brainers.
@lanaorene1935

I think that’s why Dave was trying to figure out where his head was .... because it should be a no-brainer. He doesn’t even have to haggle with creditors- he doesn’t have a financial issue- just mentally and emotionally crippled. Perhaps therapy. Poor fuy

Poor thing does need some assistance and therapy. With seven figures he needs a trustworthy accountant to sort and pay the debt off and invest the rest (also invest in himself with a great therapist and support group). Keep six months worth of emergency fund.

Unfortunately, people like this spiral over the edge all the time. Some may view this as bragging or flexing, but I hear a guy who's two steps from the ledge and sometimes people like this drag others down with them. Start by paying off all your debt in order to return to zero. Then find a counselor or therapist who can help you begin to look in the mirror. This guy has money, but he may as well be standing in quicksand with a suitcase full of cash under each arm.

assuming my understanding of apr is correct, and he has say around 25% interest on all of them, then he has around $3000 in interest per month on his bills. if he is making 200k per year, then that is 16k a month. he has always had the ability to pay them off.

Has a million, can't figure out how to cover 150k in liabilities. Huh?

After some learning, you can do exactly what debt-settlement companies do, and not have to pay them 15%. Although he should have done it before the settlement came through.

Call them one at a time and negotiate em. Don’t pay any of it with that 7+ figures. You can get that down by half and be done in a year.

Can someone elaborate on this debt buyer that he's talking about?

I don't understand why Dave needs to disparage bill collectors, it wouldn't be so bad if he didn't spread outright falsehoods and lies about them. He should encourage people to have some accountability instead of blaming someone they never met for being in debt.

The stuff about them stealing money from your bank account is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I'm sure it has happened at some point in history to someone but I would say it practically never happens.

Because it hasn’t happened to you doesn’t make an ally. It’s happened to me. It’s absolutely true!
