The Buddhist monk at the hot dog stand joke actually has another punchline. After the monk gets his hot dog, he pays with a $20 bill. The guy just takes the bill and doesn't give him any change. "What about my change?", the monk eventually asks. "Change comes from within", answers the vendor.

@starygamer2428
@starygamer2428 3 года назад
@Dumisani Nkosi well, yeah. But your wording for it in your first reply is kinda wrong. That's why i got confused. They do believe this is reality. And the reality is that nothing last forever. Including this world we live in. That's why we believe we should detach from any kind of attachment because when we are attached onto something or someone and when they are gone, we are suffering because we're too attached to them that we don't want to let them go. And by letting them go, we're free from suffering from our own attachment onto them. Well, atleast this is my understanding about buddhist teaching. So technically, your point is right. Tho, attachment doesn't always mean our attachment towards something that we posses in this life(as in materials and such). It can be relationships as well. But that doesn't mean you just cut off all your relationship with everyone including your family. It's just that you're not attached to the relationship itself. But anyways. Like i said before, this is just my own uderstanding of the buddhist teaching so there's a chance i might be slightly off.

“Today I decided to forgive you. Not because you apologised or because you acknowledged the pain you caused me, but because my soul deserves peace.” -Najwa Zebian Edit: For those who didn’t understand the quote or found it egoistic. Here’s a pov I’ve read recently that encapsulates what I understood when I first the quote myself. “Imagine being bit by a snake and instead of trying to help yourself heal & recover from the poison, you are trying to catch the snake to find out the reason it bit you and prove to it that you didn't deserve that.” I don’t believe forgiveness is inherently about empathy towards the perpetrator it’s about empathy towards oneself, as you will never gain the maturity to see the tragedy of those who do wrong, without realising yourself you’re digging your own grave more than they ever did it for you in the first place. You’re only hurting yourself by holding onto that resentment. They have already moved on. Letting that resentment go instead, that anger, you take away their power over you, the power you’re giving them. Only then the compassion will come. First for yourself and then for those who wronged you. Whether you are religious or not, and I am not, empathy I do believe is fundamental. It also takes maturity. Forgiveness doesn’t entail emphasising as a process but I do believe it’s byproduct of it. In forgiving someone you gain the clarity needed to perceive the perpetrator for who they are. It doesn’t mean you consider what they did acceptable or underserving of the just punishment. It doesn’t mean you consider them unworthy of understanding either or yourself above them. It means you come to see things for what they are. The more you let go, the clearer your head, the surer your steps and actions will be. You could have retaliated, gotten revenge and sacrificed who knows what for it, maybe even lowered yourself to their level, but you didn’t, you saw beyond it and gained the experience and strength those who wronged you lacked. How could you not emphasise? Not see how we are humans made of the same flash? Tempted in the same ways? True forgiveness will inevitably give you some empathy. If you don’t feel any empathy for the other I don’t think you’ve really let go.

Not too familiar with Najwa but this seems, to me, more like under hand oneupmanship and less like true forgiveness. I would think a Buddhist would feel empathetically sorry for who ever transgressed in the first instance, on account of the lashing out being rooted in and perpetuating of thier own suffering. In such an exchange as you express no transaction of understanding or compassion seems to be taking place.

I agree with Damien, they are quite different things. With that said, I think the secular world (i.e. people like me) would benefit tremendously from spiritual guidance like this. For thousands of years humans had religion to guide them, give a sense of something greater than themselves, and attempt to answer some of the big question in life like "how should I live?". As a scientist by occupation, science only provides a framework to reach answers through empiricism. It is ill-equipped to answer questions like how one should live. As a catholic teenager, there’s a rare sort of peace I’ve felt a few times at youth retreats and similar calm church events while listening to people talk and/or praying, and I haven’t felt that peace for a long while now, since at least before the pandemic. Life has gotten the better of me, and I lost the funny little peace candle I used to have constantly burning in my chest. But listening to this video brought it back somehow, his voice unlocked that missing feeling in me and I finally feel like maybe, just maybe, I can move on to tomorrow a just little bit better than I have been doing for the past few months. As an atheist, in my world religions class buddhism was the religion that connected with me most. No matter how it's practiced or what fables, leaders, deities or afterlife might shroud it depending on the person, at it's core, wherever or whoever practices it, it is a set of ideals that we should all strive for. Humanism, humility, empathy, understanding, knowledge, self-reflection and self-improvement. While most religions TELL you what to believe and not to ask any hard questions, that is the CORE of what Buddhism is. You basically end up questioning everything and having a Socratic debate with yourself in order to achieve "enlightenment".

@@waluigi3515 I hope you have the patience to read this message, sorry that it'sso long. There are many false teachers around and also a lot of people who don't know what Christianity actually is, even though they're Christians. But I'm not in a place to judge anyone for whatever they told you. Christianity is not about going to church every Sunday or doing a set of prayers at home. It's about having a relationship with Jesus and from personal experience that's the best thing in the world. It's constant unlike everything else in life. The Gospel message is that we are all sinners and that we have on us the wrath of God because God hates sin , no matter how small it may be. (Try not to make the mistake of looking at sin though your eyes because we are always going to think that we are righteous.) We all deserve to go to hell. We think others do, cuz they're more evil when in fact we're no better. But the all powerful God( who didn't really have to bother about such small beings of the universe, )out of His love for us, came down to Earth, adding onto Himself a human nature and lived life among us. Suffering the same way as us. And faced with the temptations that humans face. But He resisted it and didn't give in. He lived a perfect life. He was dragged and spit upon and murdered when He didn't even do anything wrong. But He kept quiet the whole time. He could've easily struck down those torturing Him. He didn't. He was the perfect lamb was the sacrifice. He took upon Hinself our sins and died. That perfect sacrifice was enough to appease God. (God loves us but if He has to be a perfect being , He needs to be a perfect judge. No good judge leaves the criminal unpunished or until his fine is paid. And that's what Jesus did ,He paid our fine and before He died He said. "It is finished".) The only thing we have to do is accept that gift of God and believe that Christ died for your sins and rose up on the 3rd day conquering death which means , you can conquer death through Him as well. You have to just repent( accept you're a sinner and you're this imperfect person but want to turn away from sin and want to obey God out of love for Him) . That's it!! He loves you even when you make mistakes. Even when I fall into sin after fighting it so much and feel guilty, God assures me that it's okay, He isn't gonna cut ties with me and expect me to be a good person and then come back to Him or something. Absolutely not. He takes me back ,then and there ,and walks with me. Holding my hand as I face all my struggles and suffering. My life changed completely when I accepted Christ. The Bible doesn't say all your suffering and pain will stop or something . But what we do have is peace through whatever happens cuz God lives in us when we let Him in. Christianity is beautiful. Jesus just calls you into a relationship with Him. And He makes you feel so much more special than any human ever could. John 3:16, For God so loved the world, He gave His only begotten son, so that whoever believes in Him should not die , but have eternal life. God loves you so sooo much, just accept that love. It's the best feeling ever!!! Love you!!!

With the ignited flames from our loved ones, touching moments no matter how small, and in turn we provide the same light to others. It can be lonely yes, it can be hopeless as well. Learn from mistakes, do no harm to yourself or others, only in the cases of survival... But if can avoid violence and stress for you and others, life is too short to waste it on bad things.
