I Had a car accident back in 1993 resulting in the same injury to the same arm so I know exactly what your talking about. For me the most aggravating thing has been the phantom pain. It's 24 hours all day every day but you learn to deal with it and live on. The only thing that will stop you is you. I do so much people actually forget I can only use one arm. I know from personal experience what this man is talking about you can still live a full life after this injury.

On July 26 2016 I was also in a motorcycle accident. I had two root avulsions. I had a nerve transfer surgery which is mildly successful. I experience pain 24/7. I think the weather elevates the pain from time to time. Its hard to stay positive. Like many here, I feel alone.. I feel like there is nobody who can possibly understand what I am going through and I worry about my future. I wish all you the best, stay a strong and try and stay as active as you can.

Listen bro. I'm here with you. I'm 29 and had a football accident at the peak of my high school career. This happen in 2007. I'm still dealing with my injury. I had no surgery on my nerves because I was told I only stretched my nerves. Never give up. I came close to giving up. Science is improving. Soon they will be able to reverse this condition.

Hi devolt I have brachial plexus injury from motorcycle accident in 2010 not complete avulsion but a crush and stretch injury resulting in paralysis and loss of sensation. I had surgery in London from a Mr Fox (Stanmore) where I had a sensory nerve graft and muscle grafting. I am now able to move my arm and have 70% movement I’m one of the lucky ones but everyday is a reminder for me, the phantom pain is constant but I’ve learnt to live with it and I still live my life to the fullest. Your positivity and story struck many cords with me it’s been a long struggle but made me a stronger person I hope you continue to raise awareness and continue to be available for others in the same situation, thanks dude.

I've suffered from the same thing since birth and hearing your comforting words & advice really helps. I appreciate you brother. I've spent my life sad and angry at the world & especially God for being the way i am. Many days i spent wishing death upon myself cause i couldn't bare the pain of not being able to do the things ive always wanted & wished to do .. ive felt left out my whole life. i wished things would b different. I am now trying to learn to love myself and understand that everything has its reason but its frustrating as you may understand but surely i will overcome my demons. Knowing theres other ppl going thru the same thing as me puts joy in my heart cause we are in this together & i don't feel so alone now.

I gave birth to a baby boy who was born 2011 with Brachial Plexus. i didn't get to see him for the first few hours of his life because my delivery was one for the books. when i finally got to see him i instantly fell in love and crushed all at the same time. All i thought about was the things "he wouldn't" be able to do. as time passed i realized he had to just do things the way he felt was the easiest for him. i mean from holding his bottle to crawling to being able to walk without falling over. he is now 8 years old and sometimes i forget that he is a little more special than the average 8 year old. he does EVERYTHING any 8 year old does and might do it a little better because he is a LEFTY. I thank you for this video for encouraging my son and myself. I'm actually putting together a short documentary about my Aaron. i will post it on RU-vid. my goal is to show it to school age children who might not understand Aarons specialness. i refuse to tell him he is disable because in my eyes he isn't!!! ii wish you well and again thank you

Motorcycle accident Aug 2012. Avulsed c6-t1 nerves in my left arm. Had two surgeries the first year, gaining bicep function. Became a single dad of of three in 2013 with my youngest still in diapers. Phantom pain is bad but keeping busy is the best way to get by it. Off all meds, was getting too many side effects before. Was a master automotive technician before, now I manage the same shop I worked at. I also worked a part time job maintaining a fleet of cars for a few years, was able to do everything one handed from brakes, timing belts, steering boxes... I learned that I can do everything one handed as I did before with two, may need to do it differently or be slower but there is nothing I can't do other than tie my shoes, lol. I'm currently doing a frame off truck restoration by myself. Gave up on dating, tried dating apps with no luck, seems like having three kids and having a disabled army is a big turn off.

you have my sympathy brother, i crashed my 2005 suzuki gsxr 1000 back in 2006 and got all broke up, but when my clavical broke it ripped c3, c5, and c6 out of my spinal chord and paralyzed my left arm. for the first few years i had stabbing pains in my arm pit every few minutes that felt like somebody was stabbing me with an 8 inch dagger, and shooting pains starting at my elbow and would shoot out my baby finger and ring finger. it also burns and feels like hot static. i just decided to have my arm removed just below the shoulder in 2013 and fused the remainder of bone to get the dead weight off my neck. still deal with burning hot static or pins and needles, and my scapular or shoulder blade is achey like a tooth ache. i get tention headaches also. severe brachial plexus injury will make you feel like somebody is playing with a voo doo doll of you. stay strong brother, i know exactly how you feel and would not wish it on the devil. he who endures till the end shall be blessed.

I asked my doctor at one point, ready to have my arm removed, but he said it could actually make the pains worse. Like you and the rest of us, i accept living in pain. I got into a moyer scooter accident 6 month's ago while living in Thailand. My girlfriend at the time left after 3 weeks 😂 nobody could imagine the physical pain i am in 24 hrs a day hardly any sleep for 6 months. Thank you for the inspirational video. In Thailand i was on tramadol and alternativinh gabapentin and pregabalin bi weekly. When i returned to the states they immediately tried taking away the tramadol which is the only thing that actually helps ive tried going days with no meds but without the tramadol the pain is unbelievable. Anyhow i have a t8 alvulsion and major injury to all the other cords. My left arm is paralyzed but i can move my fingers and forearm a little. Im here to talk to anyone still out here that may come across this message. I could offer support and i could use some myself. I read every comment here and i honestly consider you all my brothers a sisters going through the same struggles. I'd like to thank anyone here that is here for a loved one and hope you continue your support for them you are a angel in their lives. Peace and love everyone. Take care. Stay positive.

Same with me, a left arm brachial plexus injury from a motorbike crash with a C6 evulsion; the really intense electrical pain throughout my arm and hand take my breath away. Some days I don't want to even breath because the pain is so overwhelming that any other sensation is too much to cope with. I take Gabapentin, Oxycodone and Morphine and it still doesnt keep the pain away. It is nice to hear from someone who knows what it's like because when I describe the pain to doctors and most people, I get the feeling they think I'm just exaggerating the level of pain.
@painsupportgroup9654

I hear you! I nobody has any idea except those who has it. My doctor told me it’s one of the worst injuries one could have because of the mental exhaustion of experienced pain without the blood, cuts and bruises one would expect to see. It’s like fighting a invisible war everyday while trying to act normal. But we are over-comers and victors at the end of the day. Everyday is a victory, and well done in fighting it. You have my allied support.

@@painsupportgroup9654 Thank you. It definitely does feel like a battle every day. Trying to act like everything is fine in public is particularly challenging, I have to really resist the urge to grab my arm and curl up in a ball on the floor. I keep hoping science will come through with a fix for us, there were some successful results with spine damaged rats, even a head transplant in 2017, so hopefully the technology will come around soon, so I don't have to keep my hand in my jeans pocket all the time lol.

Thanks for putting this video together. This is something I've talked about doing for years and years for the same reason, to pull us all together in hopes of helping others through the "storm". I have a complete avulsion of C5-T1 for 22 years (complete paralysis) as a result of a motorcycle accident (1997 Honda CBR600F3). My accident was June 4 1997 and within 6 months I went under the knife at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester MN. I had both gracilis (thigh) muscles transferred into my arm (2 surgeries, 2 months apart Dec 1997, Feb 1998) and intercostal nerves (nerves on the lungs were transferred and retrained) to regain elbow flexion, shoulder stability and some hand function (all fingers open up at once, all fingers close at once). The concept of these Mayo Clinic surgeries is to give us a similar function as a prosthetic but doing it with our own anatony! The results were good for me i think. I have shoulder stability reducing the stress on my neck (a huge problem before the surgery). I am able to pull my arm in against my body (like if I fell down or if i bend over) which maybe doesn't sound like much but it most certainly is! To be able to pull it in against my body helps me roll over in bed and to keep it against me when needing to protect it from harms way! I also have elbow flexion and I can put 20-30lbs of pressure against my arm! You would be surprised how much I can carry! Its useful for say a laundry basket. I put pressure against the basket and use my good arm for balance. This is highly useful for many things, for instance holding a baby, I can use my arm to assist! :) Its mainly a "helper" function. I can pin things against my paralyzed arm to pick things up. I did not get any hand function but I also never followed up to change the length/tension of the tendons which was an option and wrist did not lock up on its own and i did not choose to have my wrist fused (a requirement to get hand function). ANYONE reading this interested in discussing their injury or has questions about my 22 years of experience with this injury and these surgeries can contact me by phone (call or text) 616-843-1432 or by email at naterowland@ymail.com. i would be delighted to share my experience in hope to adding value to yours and yours to mine! God bless and hang in there. You CAN peel an orange and you CAN tie your shoes! It might take a few years but YES YOU CAN! Nate Rowland Fruitport Michigan

Hi, thank you for this video and im glad I found this. Theres a reason for everything and for whatever reason I watched this, im thankful. I injured my shoulder 5 years ago playing rugby making a tackle. Suffice to say, I came off 2nd best and felt a pain like never before after 10 mins. I ended having surgery after 12 months after doctors told me I had a brachial plexis injury which is more common to motorcycle accidents (I didnt know to feel lucky or unlucky, especially being the only one to have this injury I know of, making a tackle in rugby). Ive always been an active person and person of faith but after a few years it tore me down to lows Ive never experienced. I wasnt prepared to the extremity of how tough it was mentally, let alone physically. Im now in my 5th year and not much has improved. I have little movement but not as bad as in your case. Part of me was waiting for my hand to heal so I can get back into fitness and get back to how I was. This video has inspired me to.be content with what I have to make the most of it. I know God will never forsake me and I need to be as strong like you. My arm is disabled but my mind body can still achieve a lot more. Again, I thank you for sharing this message. God bless.

Thank you, thank you so much. I too have a brachial plexus injury. Riding my motorcycle, I was a victim of a hit & run, i95 in south Florida. C5-7 are herniated my left arm is completely paralyzed. I can't stop thinking how my life would have been of more quality if they amputated my arm instead of me having to carry this dead weight. 12/16/17 3:30pm on a Saturday afternoon, not even a Good Samaritan called 911 they just left me there like a dog on the side of the road, ruptured spleen, callasped lung, brain bleed whole list of injuries. Coma for 3 days. I used to walk around at 220 lbs now I weigh 160lb. I don't enjoy life, at least not like I once did. But you look so good, able to build things. Kinda gives me hope, in this hopeless situation.

im glad you posted this. My boyfriend had a dirtbike accident april 1 2021, slapped his entire left side on a pole which has resulted in a avulsion brachial plexus. Completely tore c5-t1. He was taken to bamc the military hospital in san antonio, they literally did nothing. No surgery no therapy. Its been a little over a year and he STILL hasnt had one surgery or any therapy. He has no movement or feeling anywhere on his left arm, hand and shoulder area. When you look at his left arm from the side it looks like his shoulder is out of socket, i can grab his arm and push it back up into the socket area but it doesnt stay. His pain is constant, unbearable at times. Hes currently taking Gabapentin 600mg 3 times a day, it helps but not alot. Ive been reading about acupuncture/electroacupuncture for brachial plexus injuries and how it may help with pain, as well as tinctures for nerve pain on etsy (if you believe in tinctures and that kind of stuff), Hopefully we and everyone else on here can find something that will help the pain more. This injury has affected his mental health so badly, im hoping when i show him this video he will feel a sense of hope. Thank you for sharing!

BPI on 10/10/17 from a Motorcycle accident. Surgery was on 2/13/18, and second surgery was on 3/20/18. I had both a nerve transplant, and a nerve graft done. I am currently patiently waiting on the results. C5 was completely torn from the spine. C6 & C7 were severely damaged. ----The pain in my hand is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I take 0 medication for it though. In my humble opinion, we have to really just do the mind over matter thing in regards to it. Those pain meds can turn into a whole new problem. Very inspiring my brother, I have total brachial plexus palsy with nerve root avulsions from C5-T1 a year ago today 4/21/2017, from a motorcycle accident. I'm a former State Trooper (Law Enforcement) and now my life has completely changed. The pain is worse than not being able to use my arm and hand. I've had a nerve transfer at Mayo Clinic moving two of the intercostal nerves from lungs to my arm to hopefully regain elbow flexion with no positive results yet....Any insight or ideas you have to help would be much appreciated! With love from America, Chris

Hi Chris, thank you for sharing. Yes you are right, it would be a life changer if we could only get rid of the pain. The pain is something I can never get used to, but hey life goes on regardless. Keeping the mind busy is what helps me cope. I have taken on many hobbies from working leather to rebuilding car engines. Yes its frustrating but many of my hobbies taught me patience and the outcomes is almost always positive. Seeing and experiencing a work of art built and made by just one hand restores the dignity one lose after such a life changing accident. That is something I want to tell everyone, so thats one of my best advice. Hell even frying and chopping up a steak all by yourself even if that sucker jumps around everywhere was one of my first things a felt proud of accomplishing. It just kept pushing the boundaries from there with even more challenging things. I guess what I want to say is, never stop challenging yourself. If some miracle lands on the scene that takes the pain away, life with one hand would pretty much be normal as if I had two. Good luck and keep in touch.👍🏻

Chris! How you doing man!? I also was in a motorcycle accident. I also have a complete C5-T1 avulsion and i also was treated at the Mayo Clinic with the same intercostal nerve surgery! Dr. Allen Bishop was the lead on my surgery along with a team of 10! I also had a double gracilis muscle transfer, something I'm not sure they do any more. i was the 4th person in the US to have the muscle transfers (back in 1997). Reach out to me by phone if you would like. 616-843-1432 or contact me by email at naterowland@ymail.com. Lets chat! Maybe the discussion can help us both!

Some VERY important information that wasn't shared with me was you have a 12 month window to get the proper surgery to have full mobility of your arm again but will always struggle with pain. I didn't have any medical insurance at the time and when I was eligible for low income state medical, they purposely gave me the run around until it was to late. I made the mistake thinking the hospital and professional advise would serve and guide me in the right direction.

I had a "proper" 10hour surgery myself about 3-4 months after the accident but no such thing as full mobility - I noticed no improvements whatsoever and this includes the Pain

the pain is so distracting my only desire is to do more of what i hurt myself doing (and i have a lot) but it's time consuming and expensive. my problem is my career has suffered due pain/distraction and limited use but very well disguised left arm. Complete lefts shoulder reconstruction after a snowboard accident. My other shoulder is overworked and has 3 muscles with slight damage. my back needs attention LOL. i feel best when i'm distracted from the nerve pain (extreme palm sensitivity like skin ripping at the lines, wooden fingerbones, pinching skin on forearn) and my shoulder is not quite in the right spot so it catches and that's a pain i used to not feel because the nerve pain was so bad (it has subsided but has leveled out and consistent now). It feels sooo much better than it did for years, i couldn't move it for 6 months and the extreme pain of my finger tips ripping off when the electrified firebolts came from my shoulder out my finger tips and my armskin was on fire for about 8 months. I laughed like a madman to see my arm laying there ...not burning or dripping with molten lead! i know i'm lucky i can move it at all for about 6 months. it took about 3 years to gets as recovered as i think i can. my major problem is finding the right job that is conducive to my hypertensive hand on a weak arm. a job not too demanding for my distracted mind! LOL i have a lot of empathy for those with one arm or with disabilities in general. the pain has made me more focused on enjoying life partially because the injury cost me my career that i hated! the pain is very real. i look normal because i can use my arm and hand but both are smaller than the other side. gloves help greatly but cramps are easy to get because of the lack of stamina in the muscles from my back to my fingers. i don't want sympathy but know that there are lots of people in pain debilitating pain that is not obvious and i commend those striving to enjoy life though pain.

Wow watching this is incredible! My name is Devon, I too have brachial plexus in my left arm. My arm is completely paralyzed shoulder down, and mine also happened from a motorcycle accident. I’ve had multiple surgeries now due to the accident, mainly trying to regain movement, feeling and remove nerve pain. I don’t know how many surgeries were specifically on my arm but I’ve had 22 in total. As for my accident I hit a truck on the highway. It’s almost a little mind blowing for me watching this because your arm looks identical to what mine looked like pre-amputation. And this is my first time searching for anyone else with BP sense my accident in 2012 so it’s pretty amazing. I did meet one person with it while I was in the hospital but luckily she didn’t have pain from hers. It’s honestly really nice to hear what you’ve said about the pain though. I remember when it first happened I’d be laying in the hospital bed crying begging the nurses for any type of medication I could get. Luckily now it’s not quite as bad as then, idk maybe I’m just more used to it or something. I’m also on an outrageous amount of painkillers so I’m sure that helps lol. Anyways, I hope I didn’t over share but I really enjoyed the video! It’s nice to know there are people out there like me! Take care!

7 months post-injury, and I'm still in pain. I'm told I'm lucky I've still got use of my arm, but the people telling me that don't even slightly understand the pain level. Despite this, I refuse to give up karate, and I've mastered one arm swimming...gutted though, as I was a bit of a ballerina/stunt artist in the water, now reduced to slow lane swimming! I can't remember the last time I slept! As for work...they have no clue...I can look normal, they'll tell me to pick things up, and BANG neuropathy! Then there's the sicky, dizzy feeling! The doctor has no clue how to treat the condition! I'm getting well peed off with the whole thing! I just want to do yoga again, without compromising and adapting! You know, first 3 months were hell...I've never felt pain like it...without family I'd have "given up" entirely!

I had my accident six weeks ago thankfully less serious than the majority on here. My main loss at this stage is Bicep movement, the chronic pain mentioned is an overriding issue, as so many say concentration is non-existent and my only focus is on the injury and hopefully getting back to full health. I'm getting very little advice from specialists who initially prescribed Gabapentin and then Pregablin with a wash down of Oramorph. I spent a week trying the Oramorph and found little benefit so stopped that, i'm currently on 300mg of Pregablin and will double that soon but not convinced it does anything. I really would like a nights sleep, currently getting naps so obviously the sleep deprivation has a negative knock on to everything. Thanks for Vid though and keep fighting on.

You and I are broken, so is the world around us, and for some reason I think we heal the world around us with our brokeness by demonstating the value of life and how we fight the good fight in getting up every day and showing the world we not giving up! I know exactly what you are talking about. At a stage it got so bad that people sat circles around me in a crowd as if the loneliness were emanating from me. Its is not as if there is something wrong with us as a person, its just that we dont have someone to relate to in what we are going through. The pain is a big deal and so part of our daily routine and is therefore part of our conversations. I can imagine normal healthy people not being able to associate with us. Well all I can tell you is that through staying positive, prayer and not giving up I met the most awesome people that understood me. I even met a friend who lost his hand in a accident who goes through exactly the same kind of pain every day. We met in church and became the best of friends. He is my go-to guy when I want to rant/rave/complain/lash out/freak out over this ruthless pain and I’m the same for him. I really want to help you, I can be that friend. I’m here to support where I can. God bless you and hope to hear from you. Perhaps some time close in the future I’ll start n messaging group to connect everyone subscribed on this channel.

pain support group thank you for replying. I really appreciate it. I’ve fairly new to this disease. I got shot during a home invasion. The bullet missed my heart by a half of an inch but tore my brachial plexus to shreds. I had to get 12 units of blood because I lost so much. The surgeons had my mother come say her goodbyes to me before they started to do surgery because they said there was no chance in hell I would survive but here I am 7 months later wishing that could’ve been the outcome. I don’t know where to go or what to do. I miss my old life so so bad!! So yea.. that’s a little of my story.

pain support group I guess I should tell you a little bit more about my injury though. My left arm is completely paralyzed. I cannot move my hand or fingers at all. My shoulders jumps every once in a while but I can’t move it on my own. I get the phantom pains and I lash out at people who love me the most and I’m just tired of being miserable.

Hang in there buddy, I did this too with the people that were close to me. It still happens but I do my part to make things right, my injury were not their fault and they shouldn’t get the wrath of it. I hope you understand. But hang in there buddy, you are tougher than you think. You’ll overcome by staying positive. The pain needs to fought in the brain, negativity and hopelessness just makes the pain worse with no end in sight. Trust me on this one. But I’m here to listen, I apologize if I reply late, but I will reply. Good luck and all the best👍🏻

So sorry for your injury. Been there since 2005. Yes when you are in pain it is hard not to lash out at those around you, esp when they talk about their pains. They have no ideal. But we learn to live with it. Personally I remove myself from the room when it becomes unbearable, and have stopped my car on the road so I could scream when needed. But I do try to never let my friends or family see my pain, "try" being the key word. Life is good, just different. Christ is Great!

I was in a bad car accident June 13 2018 and flew out of the windshield. I have a brachial plexus avulsion in my left arm as a result along with other injuries. I’m having my 2nd surgery in a couple weeks and I just would like to know would I regain my arm again cause it’s completely paralyzed like yours. & the pain is in crucial. I have to take 6 gabapentins a day along with 3 Tylenol’s every 6 hours. Any suggestions? Tips or help ?

Hi, i'm Corey, When I was a baby I was 11 1/2 lbs. I am a male and when I was a baby the Doctor that delivered me was having a difficult time getting me out and he pulled me out by my left arm because in a few more minutes I would have been dead. so all my life from the Doctor pulling me out by my left arm, it is a bit shorter by a few inches and thinner and weaker then my right arm, but still the same like my right just different and bent in my the elbow just a bit... but still I notice it and I have hated this my whole life.. and I can't lift it over my head but I can move it and do regular activities I just can't lift my left arm that high and I can't turn my arm like wrist up like arm wrestle position since forever, I can't curl my arm up since birth, I can only lift maybe only up to about my forehead, all my life I have had this birth defect and I hate it for the past 31 years of my life, so I recently came to finally accept it and trying to better my situation. I have been trying to strengthen my arm and trying everything. it's not going as I planned.. I don't know how to fix this, I have been to doctors and none want to help me or even know what my condition is even called, one doctor said it's called "brachial plexus"

Omg i have exactly the same story and also with my left arm. Now i’m 20 years old studying and living a normal life. It’s not bothering me at all but I still wish I can do more physical activities. We should just stay strong and accept it the way it’s and be thankful that at least we have an arm. Greetings from Germany

Thanks for this vid as im struggling to come to terms with the injury to my left arm as a result of a motorcycle accident 2 months ago....no movement apart from small amount finger twitch ....awaiting a referral to brachial plexus specialist ....its the not knowing to what extent i will get the use of my left arm back is playing on mind heavely .all the usual worries financially etc. Although i have pain in my upper arm shoulder an hand it doesnt appear to be on same chronic level as most of the previous comments or am i being naive as it may get worse as the swelling an numbness disappears thanks again

I am so sorry for what happened! I can imagine what is going through your mind. I really really really hope its just a nerve stretch which heals over time. In my case this what I was hoping for in the beginning, but turned out to be unlucky. So I’ll be praying that you’ll get good news! However should this not be the case, life will get challenging but there always remain hope. I’m here if you need me friend.

I have complete brachial plexus avulsion injury too from a accident in 2005. I spiraled out of control and became a addict for over a decade but fortunately I have amazing parents that didn't give up on me and helped me through my darkest times. Im doing so much better now and I'm trying to get healthy again and exercise but I'm completely lost on how to exercise my chest and back. Does anyone have a solution to this??

Hi Brian, I haven’t met a nurse to date that gives a thumbs up towards bikes and especially quads, I bet you still get it from them ever since haha. 6 Years after my accident I decided to try a quad one day. Everything went well until I took a sharp right turn...lets just say I got the shaking head from nurses for a few hospital visits after that. Jokes aside, you have my empathy brother. All the best.

@@earlholler7872 I'm not sure if anyone is active in this post. I'd be happy to talk with you. I have a brachial plexus injury in my left hand. I have had multiple surgeries. I am unsure what to do or to just accept life with a paralyzed hand (probably the second option). I was hoping to hear from others who deal with the injury.

No doubt these suicidal thoughts are there, but it is so not worth the deed. Its you against the world, people and pain. You feel out gunned and outnumbered, but hey its all lies. Your thoughts are your greatest weapon if the barrel is faced away from you. It takes great practice, but as sure as heaven exists and hell being under your feet you are a victorious warrior if you live to see another day. The bravest of the brave such as you and me and all the others on this channel are chosen ones to prove to the world life goes on. I feel your pain brother, literally, but you are a success with every breath you take from here on out till its your time to be fetched off this earth rather than to be stolen from us off this earth. God bless you brother and Im here for you.
