OP, you said you went on a deep dive for relationship advice, but there is a book published in 1992 that actually will give you the answers. It is called The 5 Love Languages. I would suggest you read the book with your husband and discuss each other's love languages, cause there are many couples who go their whole lives with the miscommunication you mentionned, but clearing it up will see your 20th anniversary as the strongest bond ever.

Sometimes the spirit of generosity guides people to give what they want to give or what they think the other person would like rather than to listen to what the other person really wants. It’s unfortunate.

I wouldn't call her terrible. At least, even late, she wants to do the things he really wants, some men don't even get that. I suspect that the things he needs from that relationship are just not the things she thought he needs, they are just something diferent, which he probably gets as he's still married to her.

I think it's a gap between what is expected to show affection Most people expect materials things like flowers, a nice watch, etc for occasions as it's the standard. Some people prefer experiences or activities instead and since it isn't the norm, if they don't ask, they usually don't get it. For example, I enjoy creating and activities while my partner likes words of affection. They help me in creating and look out for activities I'd enjoy while I talk about how great they are and create poetry sometimes about how much I love them. It can become complex when receiving gifts as people are surprised about myself wanting tools as a present and my partner not really wanting much
