Day 2 of the Bend to Alvord has us waking up to muddy, rainy and windy conditions. With the rain we had received over night I had concerns that the roads were going to be extremely muddy and hard to travel. I have had experiences in situations like this where I have gotten myself severely stuck, so my concerns were valid and I wasn't just being a weenie, lol. In the end the conditions were not that bad so maybe I was being a little bit of a weenie, lol. We had no problems on this leg of the journey, which saw us ending at the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes.

The winds out there are hellacious. I was in a lifted pickup, wasn't driving fast, as it had just rained after a long dry spell, and ended up rolling my truck three times near Wagontire. Fortunately wasn't hurt too bad. Totaled my truck though. Met some of the nicest, salt of the Earth people, who came and helped me before EMTs and LE arrived. Different world out there compared to the more populous places in Oregon, west of the Cascades. I wasn't cited, apparently the area is notorious for accidents like that and the shoulders on the paved roads are very unforgiving. It's beautiful out there, remote, and not without its perils.

You fellas have it dialed in! I would have left the dunes alone, unless I had a dirt bike, ATV, or side-by-side. I really appreciate all the work you put into video capture and editing, your cinematography. Happy Camping, indeed.

I do the same. It’s always best to think ahead about the trail conditions and be prepared to handle what ever situation comes up. Great video and what a way to spend my lunch at work. 🙌🙌

Dude you weren’t being a weenie. For those of us that have been out there when it rains..It’s definitely a major issue. Last time it happened to me I vowed to never let it happen again! Major anxiety! Hard to understand unless you’ve been in the middle of nowhere and not confident you’re going to get out.

The reason they call it the Lost Forrest is that area does not get enough rain to sustain pine trees .they grow there because the water table is close to the surface in the area .

If you drive the Steens Mt. loop the top is about 9800 feet elevation .looking east is the Alvord Desert 6000 feet down a great view .the road is only open 3 or. 4 months a year do to the elevation .

Thanks for the video! You have to be able to get out of the wind, be able to get warm, and be comfortable if have to hole up! The idyllic west here is awesome, but can really challenge you when it comes at you. Adjust your setup accordingly!

Man I wish we had places like this here in Ohio or somewhere near. Although I like going out west, would be nice to have more trail systems and BLM land on this side of the country, especially full size friendly ones.

@@j79meyerify Yeah you definitely have to. Just did my first trip to Moab back in August. Photos and vids just don't do it justice. Only thing that sucked was I needed a vacation once I got back lol. Out there and back, driving the trails and to different camp sites, ended up doing over 4,000 miles. Plus all the hiking I did, but it was totally amazing. Did the San Juan mtns in Colorado last, same thing just absolutely beautiful.

That camp looks like the exact same place on the South side of Frederick's Butte my wife and I camped at May 10th 2022 and we had thunder snow. I would really like to get your maps of back roads to Owyhee from Bend . I probably have been on many of them but I run into fences with no gates and have to go around private property like we didn't used to have to worry about 50 years ago. Thanks for your videos.

Be warned that vehicles that have been parked for long periods of time can also harbor tree pests and their eggs. If not removed prior to a road trip, these vehicles can introduce pests into a previously uninfested area. Firewood has been shown to be an especially troublesome means by which pests are spread. In many states, all trees used as firewood are now regulated since they have the potential to harbor invasive insects and diseases.
