I'd love to know some more details about how/where you got Tuna. Were you allowed to have him spend time with Maro first before committing to having him full-time? Did you have to get permission from your neighbours that it was ok to get a second cat? Will there be a play date video in the future with all of Mark's cats? etc etc etc.

I’d also like to know where you got Tuna? Are animal shelters quite full in Japan or is it rare to have stray cats and dogs that need rescuing ? Thanks for another great blog . Fingers crossed the diet helps 🤞. A diet blog would be interesting 😊

Love Tuna! And Marmar looks so funny/cute all white like that. Such a grumpy boy. Q&A Question: What's the scariest moment you have had while living in Japan? Also Vid idea; A day in the life of Tuna~! Maybe like a cute little voice over for/pretending to be Tuna, on day he has a play date, or vet visit. Another fun idea, Sleep over slumber party! Maybe with like Aki, and some other friends. Miss the stuff you use show with Taylor.

I have hypothyroid and I've been on thyroid medication since I was 20. I will say that it has hugely improved my quality of life, and it's super easy to just take a little pill every morning, and I haven't had any side effects. It's also a really affordable medication (in the US). Taking the medicine has not impacted the function of my thyroid- my thyroid will never function normally, and taking the medicine has actually prolonged the life of my thyroid because it isn't trying to work overtime to produce the hormones my body needs. The deterioration of my thyroid significantly slowed down when I started medication. I have other chronic illnesses (type 1 diabetes) and my perspective on taking medications and using modern medicine is different from others. Modern medicine can literally keep you alive and healthy and active, so why not use it? I would literally be dead without it for T1D, and my quality of life is so much better with my thyroid medicine. It's worth taking a little pill every morning to have energy and no brain fog and no thyroid-related weight fluctuations. Medication can be a life-changing tool, not a handicap. I know everyone has their own journey when it comes to their health, and your condition may be wildly different from mine, but I wanted to share my experience in case it was a helpful perspective.
@XLightChanX
@XLightChanX 2 года назад
i agree, but i also want to share a little bit. i was on thyroid medication for around a yearish because my levels were super bad, the doctors told me i had an undetected infection and my thyroid is too destroyed to function normally again. sadly, same doctors then changed the brand of my prescription w/o telling me about the side effects of that, which were huge. i got extreme insomnia (was happy when i got 2h of sleep, only felt tired after days etc.). i didn't know at the time that it was from changing brands and thought it was just the level of the medication, but i had a lot going on so i just didn't renew my prescription and stopped taking the medication. after moving and after my insomnia was gone (took over a year) i went to a new doctor and both ultra sound and blood test showed my thyroid working fine. not perfect (was there because i felt super tired from time to time just like when my thyroid wasn't working properly on it's own), but while my levels weren't perfect they said i didn't need meds. my tiredness comes and goes though but the levels are officially "okay" haha i definitely would not endure bad thyorid levels though, i stopped my medication only because of the side effects, before that it was a lifesaver (i had to sleep around 12h) but i never had any special diet whatsoever, i live on carbs lol. i don't think taking medication now will make it impossible for your thyroid to get back on its feet if it actually can? i'm no doctor though, but feels more like supporting you to get healthy one way or the other :)

@@XLightChanX Finding the right medication and the right dosage takes some work, it's true... I hope if you need it again, your doc works with you (and w/ the proper tests) to find what's right for you! I hope everybody can be happy & healthy, though our bodies are all slightly different. Definitely glad you're sleeping better now.

Untreated or poorly treated hypothyroidism also has a detrimental affect on cognition, memory and language to name a few problems. I worked with a woman who had undiagnosed Hashimotos, she put symptoms down to age, work, life in general. She can now no longer work due to a marked cognitive decline.
@martas.9804
@martas.9804 2 года назад
I came here to say precisely this. Levothyroxine is not the sort of medication that will "change" the way your body works. It just literally replaces the T4 hormone (that your thyroid is unable to produce properly, if you have hypothyroidism), thus making it so your brain stops producing more TSH (the hormone that the brain produces in order to get your thyroid to produce T4: but because your thyroid can't, your brain just keeps producing more and more TSH in an attempt to make it work). Too much TSH in your blood - untreated hypothyroidism - over a long time can and *will* kill you. It's really not a joke. Until then, untreated hypothyroidism will have nasty effects on your body: weight gain (a lot), hair loss, always feeling cold, tingling pinky and ring fingers, tiredness/fatigue, low libido and energy, concentration and memory issues, menstruation problems (if you menstruate) and even heart problems. If you have unbalanced thyroid hormones that indicate hypothyroidism (not to be confused with hyperthyroidism), which is often indicated by high TSH and low T4 (or T3) hormones, you should go to a GP asap and get your levothyroxine. Get checked for anti-thyroid antibodies too: if they are positive, you have Hashimoto's and you should keep a very close eye on your hormone levels from then on. Not everyone with Hashimoto's will get a thyroiditis that will lower their thyroid levels, but many will over time, and as soon as your TSH starts raising above and your T4 lowering below normal levels you *need* to get the hormone replacement. It will help you and, quite literally, save your life in the future. Do *not* let it go untreated.

I have also been on levothyroxine for years, and it is a really easy medication to take. Like Beenz said you take it in the morning on an empty stomach, then wait a bit to eat, so your body can absorb it. It definitely can take some adjusting in the beginning, since I think it takes several weeks or so for your hormones to adjust--I know for me it was a struggle and I ended up having to take liothyronine as well (I have some atypical stuff, so not a great example probably lol). But, once you get the dosage down it's smooth sailing. In the end, so long as whatever you choose helps you live your life.
@LaNoir.

I take them for almost 20 years now and no single doctor ever mentioned to me that I should wait an hour before I eat (wouldn't be possible anyways, who stays at home for an hour after waking up in the morning)

@@LaNoir. This isn't something my doctor had to tell me, it's on my medication instructions. Are you on Levothyroxine too? I would double check the leaflet with your meds just in case if I were you. Hey Sharla! I have underactive thyroid and got diagnosed in 2016-2017 (I'm 33). As a result of being underactive, I actually became gluten intolerant, so avoiding gluten altogether has made a huge difference for my health and wellbeing. Obviously, it won't be the same for everyone and I'm taking levothyroxine medication every day on a fairly low dosage, without pretty my any side effects. The only downside to the meds is that you have to kind of watch what you eat when you take the meds as some types of food interact badly with thyroid meds, but other than that, I've had no side effects it in the past few years of taking it daily. It's totally an adjustment though, and understandable that you wouldn't want to start taking meds if you haven't needed to before. If you want to chat with someone who's been living with thyroid issues for the past nearly 6 years, I'd be happy to give you some advice and whatnot :)

Cat-safe plant ideas for your planter: Money Tree (latin name Pachira aquatica) Ponytail Palm Any Fern variety Bromeliad You could potentially make an orchid work too! (Phalaenopsis variety) My cats greet any new plant in my house with some noms, so I always use the ASPCA database to be sure they’re safe before buying. You should never just bring a new cat to a house!!! There is a whole routine how to introduce 2 cats to each other (the new and the "old" one). First they need to stay in separate rooms for a few days and in that time let them get used to eachother smell nad later you let them hear each other and see each other through the crack under the door and there are more steps to it. If you doesn't do that whole process the cats may hate eachother forever if they not you are very lucky.

Daughter and I were quite confused when Tuna showed up.Many years ago I had a kitten called Sugar for a few weeks. Sadly she had to be put down due to being really ill. Daughter requests more cat content. I'm interested in diet stuff as for the past 9 months I've also been getting my thyroid tested. I'm currently asymptomic for hypo, but that could change at any time. And finding decent diets that suit are confusing. Other than that, welcome back. Will gladly swap some winter weather for some heat. Also, Maros' fur will grow back perfectly fine. I had to shave one of my cats due to him being allergic to flea bites and shaving him was the best way to be able to see any fleas. Other fun fact - all babies are born with blue eyes. The eye colour will change over time.

But I think if I had the choice between a daily pill and a restrictive diet, I'd still take the meds, haha.

I'm glad you had a safe trip back. Tuna is adorable!! When you talked about removing sugar from your diet, this will help your body with so many other things too including your immune system, heart, intestinal tract etc. I definitely can relate to not wanting to take any medications for anything. I don't take any medications and at my age if I have to go to a doctor's office they always seemed shocked I don't have a long list of pharmaceuticals that I take. My take is eat clean food/snacks, drink filtered water, get good sleep and exercise. Sending you blessings and healing! 💙💛

I was so shocked to see the new kitty that wasn’t Maro! Welcome to Tuna! 💙💙 Also, that sucks that your thyroid numbers went back down after they were looking better. I definitely get how frustrating it can be when you don’t want to be adding a new medication. I’ve had to go through that with my migraines. I now have to take 3 different medications to prevent my migraines plus a medication for when I do get one. It has been very hot and humid here Missouri, US too. Lots of days over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37 degrees Celsius) with humidity above 70%. Not a lot of reprieve with rain or storms either. On the bright side, it means we haven’t had tornadoes, at least in my area.

Welcome back to Japan, Sharla! And hiii Tuna :) Q & A sounds really fun....my question is, what tea's are you loving lately? Did you snag any yummy tea's while in England? Also, sorry to hear about the thyroid issues. I'm a vegetarian and a big help for me to not crave carbs is good sources of protein. Not sure what plant-based options you have in Japan but baked tofu and sauteed tempeh are my go-to's!

As someone who has had long haired cats that have had to get lion cuts every summer, it'll grow back just fine. It might be a different pattern but it'll grow back no worries. Also Tuna is adorable, are grey cats common in Japan? I have 2 friends in Japan and they both have grey / silver cats.

In the context of dogs, I heard that they can deal much better with the heat if we do NOT cut their hair/ fur. Since they do not sweat, their underfur dose an important job for the heat-regulation. Isn't it the same with cats?
@RubellaLugosi
@RubellaLugosi 2 года назад
In terms of heat regulation yes, but long haired cats are prone to their fur matting so sometimes it has to be shaved off.

@@The12th_ Dogs do sweat! Just differently from humans; they sweat in their paw pads. :) I think it might be the same for cats, but I'm not sure.

@@jennevieve_ Right. A often humid area with a interesting smell 😅 But to cool your body by condensation, the size of the surface matters. The area by the paws, in comparison to the whole skin, is kinda tiny. Actually I have no clue how the fur helps them. But for condensation I see how their breathing helps. Anyway, thanks for your comments! I will keep these things in my mind! - And of course I will read, if there will be added more.

Oh my gosh, Tuna is so cute! I'm so happy that he and Maro are getting along! I'm also very sorry your thyroid levels aren't all that great, but hopefully this diet will really help them get back to a good place. I myself suffer from a fun variety of health issues, and really, really need to lose weight to see if I can come off some of my daily medications. So I would personally love to see some of your diet dinner meals that you make! I don't know if you ever use a lot of frozen ingredients; a lot of times I go for frozen veggies/fruits, due to my chronic pain condition that doesn't allow me to get to the grocery store that often. But either way, some good dinner recipes would be awesome to see! :3

I hope your diet is successful! I've heard so many things about the thyroid and it's honestly hard to say what works the best for most people. You're so strong and diligent, I have so much faith in that you'll make a fast recovery 🙏 ALSO! okay so you said you were trying the Kat Von D eyeliner (I had a terrible experience with that one, it like doesn't last very long at all) but I wanted to share that I started using the Epic Ink liner from Nyx (not sure if that brand is available in Japan) and it's AWESOME. It doesn't smear, the product lasts a while too AND it's not expensive at all. I just personally dislike paying over 20 for eyeliner and it only lasts like a couple weeks. For your Q&A I was wonderiiing---will there be merch coming? 👀 Tuna is the cutest little guy! So happy for your little family 💛

On the meds for your thyroid, I assume the doctor was thinking levothyroxine. If so, you don't need to worry too much about taking it. It's basically a synthetic version of a hormone called thyroxine your body produces naturally, so it's only replacing something your body expects to use anyway. My mom went on it for an underactive thyroid 20 years ago and the only problem is getting the dose right which can take a few months. She's been fine ever since. I am probably going to have to start taking it soon as my thyroid is becoming underactive.

@mthw
@mthw 2 года назад
@@meganngeorge yes, they typically suggest diet changes before your thyroid has gone clearly into underactive territory as it can slow the process down and give you a few more years before levothyroxine is required. Once you're on the hormone the diet advice isn't relevant beyond the obvious "eat healthy!" :-)
@TheNekromis

If you start to take it be sure to follow its instructions very carefully. Levothyroxine is very sensible in terms of dosage and you have to take it at the same time every day with the same liquid (water) before you eat.
