Idiots who think they own the road are why I have bullbars on my Land Rover. I never ride in groups. I learned when I worked in the motorcycle trade and only had one day off a week I didn't want to spend that day in the accident and emergency just because some tit couldn't ride properly.

8:09 that Rider in the video is me, I definitely could have done a much better job at using the brakes effectively, during this time I was still trying to get used to putting at least one finger over my brake lever for this specific reason, part of me wishes that I didn't take that unnecessary second to look at my right side mirror as nothing was on my right (because I ride on the left side of the road in Japan) could have definitely saved me from that driver as well as braking earlier. Thank you for your tips and input on this situation, I'll definitely take everything you've said about this situation and apply it to my daily ride.

What helped me was this...when I was approaching a car in another lane I would anticipate the driver turning into me or swerving quickly to avoid an animal. I already had a plan and I kept my distance until I had more options to pass safely. I never pass a vehicle in the left lane. (Almost never). When I first started riding when god was still a private I would be mentally exhausted at the end of the ride when I got home. Exhausted from doing g all the right things. Now it comes natural without effort.takes time and mistakes you survive to become a good driver that can avoid the dumb stuff

As someone who used to ride in the city, that Harley guy had it coming. Cars are INCREDIBLY unpredictable, ESPECIALLY Taxi's. They are notorious for stopping short or in the middle of the road. You NEED to keep your eyes on the road and constantly moving.

Changing the tyre sizes and profiles from stock will make the bike handling change too. I bought a bike that had the wrong profile on the front tyre and it ran wide on corners. When I replaced the front tyre with one with the correct size and profile the handling came right. Many riders put bigger tyres on the back because they think it looks cool and then have a bike with tyres that fight each other in corners. The factories put a lot of time and effort in selecting tyre sizes and profiles that suit the bike. Another time a shop put the wrong tyre on because they had one that is the right size on the shelf. Always ensure that you have the correct tyres for your bike and don't change them unless you really know what you are doing.

Every motorcycle that I've bought with the wrong size tires on it(they're always too big) has handled terribly. People like the look for some reason but they handle so much better with the stock size tires.

I went up from 55 to 60 on the rear on my mt09 and I get more responsive turning. Came from a suggestion from a yamaha engineer and it was fantastic

My rider coach is a die hard harley guy and owns quite a few of them but he literally told all of us during our range is that beginners, first time ever on a motorcycle, rides way better than the harley boys that come to his dealership because none of them can do low speed maneuvers on the range

I think about anybody can learn to be a good rider and have the correct attitude, but pride gets better of people, man. Take that French rider for example. He can see hazards developing miles away, yet chooses to put himself in danger and then gets angry about it.

As an older rider who rode and raced dirt bikes for decades, I eventually switched over to street bikes, a Yamaha Super Tenere and Kawasaki Voyager. I took a 3-day class which helps you get your permit/license and a couple days of skills building. They put you through situations and help build your skills. I have since taken advanced classes they offered. I’ve been a street rider for ~5 years now. I believe riding dirt bikes has helped with my street bike riding, I’ve always been a ATGATT type of rider, asphalt is like sand paper, it’s very abrasive more so than dirt. Just my .02 on riding, situational training, and situational awareness is invaluable out on the street plus not riding out of your skill level.

Agree 100%. I tell all would be riders to start on a dirt bike, or at least a “supermoto” like a DR400 or smaller before they get into serious street riding. Dirt bike skills translate very well to the street, (although there will be some new skills to master on the street).

Most good riders learn and most probably still practise on trail bikes (as well as mountain bikes) so they know how to recover both front and rear loss of grip from dirt, oil, gravel, leaves, etc. Happy to be in my 40's on a Fireblade and riding since I was 19. @@jalapeno.tabasco

The bike is bouncing because he’s not countersteering. He’s steering in the wrong direction because he doesn’t understand how countersteering works. Very common when training new riders.

Love this channel. A lot of the line of sight reasonings i learned riding brakeless pedal bikes in NYC. Then the newer road tactics Ive learned on motorcycles transferred to car driving. Never stop learning and transferring those tactics to other facets of life.

Haha, riding a brakeless bicycle taught me how to drive better too. I learned how to moderate my speed and anticipate things ahead as far as I can see. That was the biggest game changer I had for overall driving both cars and motorcycles. I learned how to foot break too, but that doesn't translate to driving at all. Any who, I always say the best way to fix traffic would be to take away people's breaks. Then, people would see everything around them instead of just three feet around their vehicle. I barely use my brakes on my motorcycle. Like 95% engine breaking and really only use my brakes at stops and slow speed maneuvering with my rear through parking lots. I understand how to pace in traffic and avoid bad scenarios miles ahead. Haha, most of my good driving habits came from riding that shitty bicycle that had no breaks.

@ 4:06 they tried to turn right. They moved the handle bars right and give it gas, but not enough. They should have turned the handle bars left, to turn right. Dan is correct, a couple hours in a parking lot with slow maneuvers would have made this simple turn, reflex, thoughtless.

probably on the late end, but for 11:39 130km/h is 80MPH, which would be very fast in the majority of countries even in europe, most countries have speed limits set at 120. this video was almost certainly in germany though, where many highways dont have speed limits.

Flintstoning is for braking with snow on the road. You can supply a decent amount of force while your feet still slide. I thought I was the only one crazy enought to drive in snow. I dont go near that fast.

been riding dirt bikes for a couple of years now, a lot of these riding issues I feel can be worked out with learning on that first. If you fall it's no big deal its meant for it. Clutch control, throttle control, brake control all are on par what they should be because of my dirt biking experience. learning on a 800lb bike at the moment.

With the ice thing I'm torn because if it's a straight road then the gyroscopic effect will keep you upright as long as you don't make any sudden movements whereas slowing down will make you more likely to tip over. If there's any kind of bend or junction though you may as well just bail out and save the effort.

First rider crashed because he didnt turn sharp enough initially, then he fixated on the bush he was going to ride into, forgot turning the handle bars is the quickest way to get the bike to react and turn, and proceeded to ride into bush. Also his feet came off pegs randomly

I had a situation happen like this once (10min), where a lady was turning left from the right lane. I really quickly glanced in my right mirror, hit brakes and shifted right. It was a close call because of how close we already were and how sudden she moved.

Most of today's (99%)Harley riders don't have to know how to ride a bike that never runs. Once a year the stars align and it actually starts, they go for the anual ride (fully dressed like a true bad a mofo though), they either crash, think they're going to crash or drop it in the driveway then go back to the garage and park it. While it rests for 11 months they order new accessories to bolt on top of the unreported crash damage, during this stage it's mandatory to answer any questions about the motorcycle with "I'm just upgrading some parts for next season and it's torn down right now". Every now and then they will talk to a real bike commuter, traveling bike packer or active club rider and carry on about how they've had it for 5-10-or 20 years and it's cherry perfect. They never tell you about the 100,000 miles a metric cruiser or sport touring guy would talk about, they won't tell you about the amazing corners before they laid it down like sport bike guys do, they won't even admit it's broke and their on their 3rd engine in 3 years like the 1% Harley Rider that rides would. I thought this was common knowledge of Harley riders.

I copied and pasted it from my own observations as a riding coach and mandatory rider training mentor during my time in the service. Service members are required to take training annually or bi annually to ride on base depending on branch. Those are the literal truths of most Harley owners that came in. They looked just as bad riding the the erc course their 5th year as they did the day they passed brc years previously. The commuters (that's how I would describe most of my riding background btw since you asked) would have miles, worn tires and obvious wear on dirty bikes, not typically Harley's, usually metric cruisers for the older guys and small sports bikes for the younger and their stories align with that truth. Occasionally we would get the true sport bike bro that needed a swift correction for trying to stunt on course between drills. The "chiefs" would fit the 99% Harley Rider demographic and usually had a single super cool picture of it on the side of the highway somewhere posing for a picture on their desk, different saddle bags, bar ends and mirrors every year, but still low enough miles to be on the original stupid HD logo Michelin tires... Their low speed control was typically awful. This doesn't hit home with you does it?

Definitely some truth to that. My 2 current bikes are someone else's mid life crisis purchase, one had 102 miles on it in 3 years. Also a vet and had to do some crazy riding to get my base stickers-all good though. To be fair though, it is not just HD owners. One neighbor has a Japanese bike that he starts and revs the hell out of after he cleans the carb. The other one has a V-Rod that he washes once a year. In my 45 years of riding I have over 100k miles, some out of necessity but mostly pleasure now. I live in Denver and if the road is clear I will ride. The stigma is hard to shake for all classes of riders. Be safe out there brother. @@john58ford

13:24 Dan, i think you might be incorrect. I think it was his front tyre he locked that caused the crash. If the rear locks then bike stays upright, you can even wiggle it and steer the rear, so long at the front is rolling. Lock the front and it's going to slide on to it's side very quickly. Which is why i think the front locked here. Or both locked. I used to mess about as a kid on dirt and grass. I would lock front and rear, for fun. Front is trickier. Rear is quite easy to steer when locked. I think new riders would benefit from grass practice of locking the rear, power sliding, front lock n slide. On small, light, cheap bikes. I'm talking 125cc and a road style, not the high seat MX.

Cars also have a similar brake set up. I think my old jeep Cherokee was set up with 60 / 40 split, for the same reason as bikes. It just does everything for you.

Metric riders typically tend to overestimate their own skill on their bikes. Harley riders typically tend to over estimate the capabilities of their bike before they even have a chance to overestimate their own skill. Most my friends ride sketchy old-school choppers. Most of us are on bikes that are skinny and long and only have a rear brake. I’ve never known safer riders, then again, they have to be super safe by default with that kind of setup haha

@@wss33 Oh it is definitely perfectly legal, at least here in the United States, just not for the careless. My 77 CB750 (836cc kit) chop is a long rigid framed, and rigid fork (it's an old school thing and yes they have some flexibility) rolling piece of personal mechanical art. I am only running a mechanical drum brake at the rear. After lots of experience and having common sense I just cruise and chill, smiling for miles. I would even say that such setups can force one to become a better and safer rider.

I have the best-gear and it cost less than 150 all-up . Buy as-new secondhand , it takes a bit longer to find the bargains but they are out there and girls-gear in the right-size is cheap compared to guys-stuff . It's not like it has girl written on it ! Dave nz

wut are you trying to ride? a H2 or Road glide? you can easily find a 400, 500 sport bike or 700, 900, crusier for $2,500 to $3,500 as a starter bike, infact if u really look and just want a starter you probably can even find like an old nighthawk or LTD, for $900 - $1,500, infact i got my tires changed last week on my bike and when i was at the shop they had a 89 honda hurricane for $1,200

Yes the have come a long way in anti dive tech even my 88 gsxr 7-11 had anti dive modules on the front calipers but they seem to have the dive situation squared away quite a bit but still use both brakes and drop gears if you have time and keep the bike as level as possible that is how I learned but am not young

At 9.07 the black SUV had slowed right down with nothing on his left side to turn into. It should set off alarm bells to you when you see something like that. If you ride or drive enough you'll see this several times. Someone just about misses their turn and will cut across lanes to take it.

Funny that the title describes 4% of the riders crashing in your video. It's all good though. A lot of us can do slow rolls without duck walking, u-turns, we don't knock mirrors or chase trucks and finally the all important rev-bomb. You have good content and if it keeps a few out of the ditch then we are cool. Ride safe out there.

God the optics on that first clip- half the group turns when they should have stopped to yield to traffic. The last guy makes eye-contact with the car that has to break and yield for him even though HE's the one at the stop sign, doesn't actually stop at the sign and just blows past it. One of the group fails a turn and low-sides almost off the road, and his reaction is to immediately stop in the middle of the lane, tell the car behind him that he just cut off to wait, and then pushes out his kickstand and parks his bike IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD to help his friend. Imagine being the driver of that car, watching someone cut you off and make you step on the breaks because they wanted to go in front of you, crash, and then park in the middle of the lane in front of you and make you wait on them again.

another thing worth mentioning is if you got yourself in a situation where youre maximum breaking, maybe youve already brought the rear to intermittent traction and clamping the bejeebus out of the front .. your committed to a straight line .. its all about balancing it and hoping it stops in time .. if you try to swerve in that condition its a positive dump guaranteed .. so either commit to swerve a line or hard maximum brake, not both ..

I didn't have many close calls or stressing moments when I was riding but it was surprising how fast I regained my composure... it took seconds. Sometimes I forgot about the event before I got to wherever I was going on remembered it hours later. In a car, it was nothing like that. Now it is. Other than that... Index and middle finger on the brake, brake lever tilted down to reach out to it properly and squezing it forces rolling of the throttle.

I ride a bicycle (OCC Stingray) with an 80cc or sometimes an electric motor. These videos are very helpful. Is it really illegal to walk a motorcycle on a sidewalk when you need to get around a car, on a bicycle it's an easy option but I'd imagine it's ok to do on a motorcycle if it isn't driving.

I completely agree, i’ve been riding since i was 13, now im 48. i see so many people with no riding experience buy an intermediate motorcycle and just jump on it and squeeze the hell out of the throttle then crash and wonder what happened, i keep telling new riders, Knowing how to operate a motorcycle is not the same as knowing how to ride

On braking, I've never been on a motorcycle, but I've ridden a LOT of 3 and 4 wheelers, and I'm used to the rear brake doing F-all jack shit nothing so I never use it anyway, and the one time I did it pushes down so far I caught my foot between the pedal and a rock going downhill and almost lost my foot, so no worries about me stomping the rear brake lol.

It would be nice if you would post a video showing only responsible people getting caught up in bad situations. acceleraing hard while banked over will put a 'righting' force through your frame, because physics. the bike will want to stand up and go straight on. this is possible to manage but smooth acceleration is allways preferable, the pursuit course showed me that you cover more ground in a given time if you ride smoothly. smooth also means more assessment time, better position management, better situational awareness, not to mention less wear on your tyres and running gear. the down side is remembering to light your stoplight when decelerating, which has people following me on fast runs telling me "your brakelight doesn't work", simply because I rarely need to use my brakes, which are for stopping, not slowing. correct engine speed for road speed is not something that is taught outside police training.

Yep: Accelerating during a turn makes you turn wider, braking makes you turn to the inside/tighter. People think it's like a car which is fun to gas in the middle of the turn because the big stable 4-wheeled rectangle of a car does all the 'leaning' for you, two wheel bikes don't have that luxury. I'd never risk gassing it until the turn is 90% done and I'm trying to straighten out

13:30 I'd say he "washed out" the FRONT tyre. You can do great big massive skids with the rear totally locked up and keep a bike upright no problem. Lock up the front, and you're down before you can realise what happened.

Easy kph to mph conversion. Divide by 2 then add the first two numbers 100kph / 2 = 50 +10 = 60mph 200kph / 2 = 100 + 20 = 120mph

In a car if I observe ice a little too late, I let off the gas and coast, only braking slightly if at all needed. Will a motorcycle behave similarly if I act similarly? Also, that guy was in northern Indiana or something. He should have seen that ice before he left the house.

When the harley driver without the helmet felt it was because he grabbed the front brake to tight. Its ok to brake the rear a little bit to much (without abs) yes you will droft but not fall if you have good balance, the back is so heavy amd your sitting low. But you will lose breacking power then you panic and start to grap the front, once the front tire is overloaded it will slip like that. Happen to my while emergency braking practice

I started with sports bikes 400cc, then after a few years went to a600cc, then transitioned to a street bike 900cc for everyday ride. All of these bikes helped me ride better. Recently, I got an Indian Scout, it's a great bike, but compared to sports bikes and standard bikes, it's just harder to steer and slow to get out of situations. Anyone new getting into riding I would not recommend a cruiser as their first bike.

I ride a Harley on my third year, i practice slow speed, counter steering, emergency brake and swerving at least 2 times per week (have been since i got my license) on a practice area. I see sport bikes, nakeds, adventures etc... but i only seen 2 other cruisers... on the streets... I see duck walking, locked back tires, "lean to steer" etc... Most cruiser riders don't seem to practice, and seem to struggle with basics more than other form of riders, only rivalled by scooter riders to my experience. How ever cruiser riders around here seems to be the lowest represented in accidents, so i don't know... My main tip to any tider is to practice emergency responses, such as swerving, emergency stop and first aid... etc...

The weight of it shifting, the feeling of the steering, you can feel it when you ride. Feeling that and not overthinking it is the best way I've found to ride. I enjoy the ride a lot more too

24:05 Driving on the left so likely Australia. Foot can mean pass. Hand is simply slow down. Rider in front is on CB125 on L's so not very experienced. Presume rider with camera is also on a cb125 and those bikes just fall over because the tyres on them are crap.
