I was smiling ear-to-ear when I saw this lesson...then the idea of you ripping off your shirt made me choke on my coffee. Thanks for putting this out there.
New Values is a real pop and/or melodic rock oddity in the Iggy Pop canon. Every song on it, from New Values to 5" 1', is full of great guitar riffs, great song arrangements, rich backing vocals, harmonies and even the beautiful ballad (!) Angel is an absolute masterpiece of production, with Thurston's gritty mixture of piano and slide guitar. Scott Thurston really is a talented, much underrated multi-faceted musician. New Values is awesome. When Iggy has some versatile musicians on his albums, that's when you get a Lust For Life, The Idiot and...New Values!
New Values has always been my favourite Iggy album. The guitar solo from "I'm bored" is one of those musical moments that always stops me doing what I'm doing. Great stuff, thanks for uploading this!
You know it's simple but it's kinda hard to figure out so thank you for doing this. I kept playing what i call Keith Richards chords and it was close but not quite there. You the man dawg!
The other guitarist on that OGWT performance, is Jackie Clark, and he's playing a 1970s Ovation, either a Deacon or, a Breadwinner. Also through a Marshall stack.
no way, I've always loved this track - those opening arpegg/power chords hook you in from the start. I came here looking for this last week, and then bang - here it is like magic.
About 10 billion years ago I was in a covers band. We did Lizzy, Sabbath and Van halen numbers BUT did Iggy/Stooges and Ramones too. Always interested me to see how those songs went down with a metal 'crowd'. Sometimes appreciated, sometimes not! Ha ha... Iggy is a genuine rock n roll icon. A genius at what he did. Love him! Cheers - PT.
Ace song! Being mega pedantic, the title of the video is a great example of why punctuation works. Witness "Im Bored by Iggy Pop", versus "I'm Bored, by Iggy Pop". I glanced at the title and read the first meaning, at first; then realised the Channel, and immediately clicked back into shape - hehe. Great video, as usual :)
Brilliant, I was going to request this. One of my favourite tunes of all times and such an excellent riff. I almost had it worked out, but thanks for showing the details and timing and feel. Amazing how you keep covering all the best songs, you have great taste!
If you're taking requests, I've always wanted to learn "Sixteen" from Lust for Life. One of those I could probably figure out if I gave it enough time, but I'd never get it to sound as dirty and mean as it does on the record.
Adrian you’re the only man in the world with better musical taste than me. Please consider some of the more whacky Talking Heads songs. Thank you for the great song lessons.
Thanks Adrian, another stunning lesson! I've almost nailed it...just needs a bit more practice on getting that tricky solo up to speed. A lesson on "Bitching" by the Stranglers would be great (check out Hugh Cornwell's great solo)
Thank you for all the wonderful lessons! I remember you doing a captain beef heart lesson, would it be possible to do a captain beef heart im glad lesson please. Keep up the good work.
Great lesson for an underrated track. This and your lesson on Love Comes in Spurts are among my favourites you’ve done. I thought the solo was going to be more difficult but your breakdown of it made it a lot easier. It will still take a while to play it at normal speed though! Even though I’ve been playing for 30+ years I’m still finding new things to learn to improve my playing from teachers like you. Do you have any tips on tremolo picking? I find it difficult to maintain consistent attack and speed. Also, who the hell gave this lesson a thumbs down?
Love this album and song. I believe that he filmed a music video for this song at the NZ House of Parliament - "The Beehive". I think it's an "alternative" music video to the one most folks know.
This has been a favourite of mine for years. And it’s only just occurred to me that it has a similar tone and feel to the Rolling Stones’ 19th Nervous Breakdown.... thoughts?
Many thanks ,great lesson, great song, how about the Monochrome sets He"s Frank which was covered a few years ago by Iggy & Fatboy slim as the BPA, In fact any Monochrome set song would be welcome cheers!
I love The Monochrome Set, they really were influential to me. Melodies and lyrical content were sublime. How they never became massive I still can't figure. Edited because of the effects of alcohol 😄
Hi Adrian thanks alot for all your videos Was wondering if you could give tutorials on the sound band (uk post punk) it's my favorite band and would be much appreciated
On that OGWT performance, Scott Thurston is playing a modified Gibson Melody Maker (1962 or 1963?) with two PAF humbuckers. Not sure about the tailpiece mod.
