I once got on a long flight with an entire deaf baseball team. I only know a few words and letters in Asl, so I couldn't understand what they were all saying. So I wrote down questions and answers. It made the flight super fun for everyone. I learned so much! We were all just normal people, doing normal things. Best flight ever!

I would be afraid to talk to Lia cuz she’s hot as hell not cuz she’s deaf. Also I took an asl class and now it really upsets me that people see deafness as a disability.

I had to pause every seconds so I could watch Mixxie's cute face AND read the subtitles in the same time.

One of my best friends growing up was deaf! I met her when I was three. I didn't fully understand at first what it meant that she was deaf but I just knew I wanted to be friends! She started teaching me how to sign and communicate with her, and her mom would teach me as well! Although my signing wasn't always perfect, we grew up together just like any other best friends! I wish that adults could be as non judgemental as kids and just get to know people 💖

Okay, I LOVE how BuzzFeed has been adding a lot more Deaf-based videos. Being fluent in ASL now as well as knowing the culture, ASL has become my favorite language overall. 🤟🏼♥️ Edit: for everyone saying the captions are too fast or ASL is so fast - ASL does not translate into direct English. The signs are not the exact English word in the caption so it seems like they are signing the full captioned sentences fast. SEE is signing the full sentence. 😊

As an ASL interpreter in a mainstream school, I have encountered a lot of interpreters like the ones she describes and it’s infuriating. We’re there to empower Deaf students, NOT oppress. One of the reasons I’m leaving the field altogether :/

Deaf people actually can enjoy music, especially with a lot of bass like rock. There’s even deaf bands! You should check out Beethoven’s Nightmare, an all-deaf rock band😊

Years ago my husband learned ASL because he didn't like not being able to communicate with people. It's served him well, be it talking to a neighbor or a coworker. I don't know more than a few words myself. IMO you don't need to be perfectly fluent. People appreciate that you try and show them respect.

It is amazing how fast they talk. I am having hard time reading what they say. 😮 I always thought sign language was slower.

One of the rare buzzfeeed videos besides worth it, that i find wise and touching. I am hearing impaired myself, can't hear out of my left ear and partial hearing loss on the right. It is so hard to communicate or make sure you know what's going on, when you can't hear or hear so well. It is so easy to feel alone and out of touch. But I also loved the ladies mind set of acceptance of self that was always a hard struggle for me. Very powerful video.

Glad to see these two back again. Really interesting, even if I can't understand ASL at all. I found out that ASL is actually descended from French Sign Language, and that's why is totally different to the BSL sign language group. Also I can't believe Mixxie didn't learn ASL until he was 18. That would have been so difficult. I think all schools should teach that country's sign language.

Please continue to make more of these videos. I think that more hearing people and hard of hearing people will want to watch them because we want to be respectful and enjoy being friends with others. It has been my experience that hearing people (young people and students) will group hard of hearing and deaf in the same category and they think that because we can't hear, we do not know when they are making fun of us and being annoying. I am not deaf, just have a moderate hearing loss corrected by hearing aids. I have always wanted to know how to interact with the deaf community in a respectful way. Deaf people are intelligent and perfectly able to do anything they put their mind to. They are not help less and deserve the same respect and dignity we all have for each other.

I love watching people ‘speaking’ ASL because like any language, it’s animated, expressive and very rich. Love to the deaf community, you guys rock!

This is so true I agree with Maxxie I think his name was and Lia. Where deaf people are just like us, just they can’t hear us, they can do everything we can do just have a different way of communication. We don’t need to fear them we just need to learn more about their culture and understand that they too have been under a lot of hardships just like everyone else. If we work together to become better communicating and understanding each other’s cultures, history and languages we will be better as whole.

UGH the guy with the haaaaiiiir, I'm weak

Part of my wishes that I ended up fully deaf instead of just half deaf? I like the ability it gives me to still express myself, but there's more of a barrier than if one was completely deaf because people can't tell if you're being serious of not. I have to always ask for headphones and such that are designed for one ear so I'm not uncomfortable. I can completely tone out people if they are on my deaf side. And, spatial audio doesnt work for me. I also can't sign for the life of me, but I'd really love to. I'm a very tactile learner because of my disability, which can definitely be very hard for school I'm thankful for the job that I have that is very hands on and experimental.

i don’t understand how people will act pitiful around the deaf. if i met a deaf person, i’d be really excited. i’d get to learn more ASL and learn about deaf culture.

i am so excited to learn ASL! Our differences are what make us Beautiful! I think sign language is the most beautiful language because it uses words and expressions to make words, just like our tone can make a sentence sound sweet or sarcastic I have a few deaf tables come in every now and again and I cant wait to see their faces when i can actually speak a full sentence to them

I wish they taught ASL more in schools, they do have it in one school in my district but it just needs to be more readily available to learn because it’s so critical to understanding people ❤️

okay i need to express this: I really like the ppl in this video, they made me realise how much more complex signing is and also how big of a difference it makes (or that there even is one) in changing between ASL and SEE. The text is a little to fast for my liking so i had to pause a lot and it stopped me from looking at them, but thats inevitable i guess since they didnt sign in a slow pace and the text has to keep up. Also the are both quite good looking and fun so I hope to see them return in more vids ^^

I love how expressive these two are with their face. Lots of people I know are kinda worried about what their face looks like, or scared if they make a weird looking face, but these two and any other deaf person make all sorts of faces!

This is a cool video. There are two deaf employees at my local thrift shop and they are the nicest. It really bums me out when I see them mistreated by customers who think they are ignoring them, not realizing they cant hear them. I would rly like to learn ASL

I always respect both people who are using American Sign Language (ASL) because they are proud of being Deaf. I really understand them . Who was born Deaf, it is necessary to use ASL signs in order to have great communications with whomever is Hearing or Hard of Hearing. That is essential. Keep being strong and positive! Thanks

I'm hearing and would LOVE to meet deaf people. I live in Western Australia, nearly 26 and have never met anyone from the deaf community. I feel like if we had more exposure to the deaf community the barriers would come down more. I also wish our schools taught us how to sign so if we did end up meeting someone who was deaf the communication barrier wouldn't be so difficult and awkward for both deaf and hearing.

Beautiful people, beautiful stories

I am currently doing my best to learn ASL but I'm having issues finding the right source. If you have any tips please let me know. I've always been interested in the deaf community but have never had a chance or the knowledge to interact with someone of the deaf community. I truly admire the ingenuity that the deaf people of old and wish that I could have something to do with the deaf community because of it. I have always loved helping those in need and want to help the deaf community to unite with the hearing community. I even plan to adopt a deaf child to help them and to give them a chance. Because I long to know sign language, and don't think of the deaf as lesser or worthless, but instead I think of the deaf as a high esteem group can join. I think of the deaf as lucky because of the lack of hearing. When you are missing something then you begin to be grateful for things that you never would have even acknowledge, and you begin to look at things differently. I way this from experience, although I am hearing I still have suffered great losses. Because of losses important people I have been forced to look at the world in a much different way and to be grateful for everything. On top of that I have also been bullied which gave me even more reason for looking at things differently. Keeping an open mind is the only way to enter new worlds.

In 20 years I have not seen a video so inspiring and hope giving and astounding. I have just read Oliver Sack's book "Seeing Voices" which blew me away; these videos are miracles. WHY did these parents not learn ASL and start teaching their kids ASL from the very beginning?? I just don't understand people.

Im lucky enough to go to a school with an integrated deaf program. Im not deaf however they teach everyone the alphabet in elementary, we have classes with deaf students, and in high school you can learn it. Sadly we are one of few schools that do that... we have to have deaf students bussed in from like an hour away because not many other schools have that

I have to disagree with what they told Lia, “You’re too pretty to be deaf”, my reason to why I disagree to this is because I’ve met this wonderful and beautiful person, who I hope I could someday become her boyfriend. And the best part about her is that she is deaf and that means she is unique in her own way❤️😍. Even tho I’m not deaf, I am willing to learn ASL for her ❤️

Being deaf can be tough time. I mean I had fun time in school and college but after i graduated from college. I struggling to find job because most of them don't want hire deaf people due safety and communicate issues but i still believe in faith that i will find job.

Their signing is definitely more formal. I'm so used to casual signing that it throws me off a bit. Graduated from a deaf school and many students(even teachers) sign informally. Only proper ASL class you see more extravagant signings

how does the relation between the grammatical way we form ideas and sentences in written word in english compare to ASL? Quite a few deaf people have said that SEE was confusing to them, so my confusion and intrigue lies in the fact that SEE is designed to have nearly the exact same grammar as the spoken english language, so does READING with the same grammar as SEE present the same problems? or is it the literal vocabulary of SEE that makes it different and sometimes more difficult for deaf people to grasp in comparison to ASL? and if either of those questions are a 'yes', why is one consistently harder as opposed to having some words/grammar in SEE be harder in ASL and other words/grammar in ASL be harder than SEE?

I love sign, I know a good amount. I just struggle with ASL and I use SEE. I love learning new signs every day. The only thing is my reception sucks sometimes. I have to ask deaf ppl to slow down xD I cannot sign that fast or understand that fast!!!!
