had the exact same problem with a few fancy goldfish , think the cause of it is the fact that the column of fish tanks are all ran off the same sump and infects all the tanks if something is wrong , would never buy fish again from there
I went to purchase some fish for my tropical aquarium the other day. I got a really picky retailer wanting to know every little detail about my life with my aquarium. Long story short we don’t go to Pets at Home to be judged, we go to be normal paying customers. She got really patronising and funny with us and after telling us about that silly fish point rule, she said she’d only give us one tiny fish as our tank apparently wasn’t ‘big’ enough (it’s 60 litres!) we currently only have three neon tetras in the tank. It looks extremely empty and buying such a huge tank just to be told that this is all it can hold feels like a right waste of money. We ended up walking out without any fish that day. I was willing to spend a lot of money too. Why offer to sell fish if you don’t want to sell them? Also, we figured to ask about how it’s okay for them to cram a ton of fish in those tiny show tanks when they won’t even let you purchase 2 or 3 for a huge empty one you have at home. She didn’t answer us.
Sure staff should have a better ‘bedside manner’, and not be rude. However generally you’d hope the staff know their stuff (prob not at Pets at home) so should listen to their advice. Probably what you were saying rang alarm bells. A 60 litre tank certainly isn’t huge, that’s considered a starter tank. Idk what extra fish and how many you were trying to buy to go with the tetras? Normally you only add a few new fish at a time especially to a newer tank until it’s cycled. Not go shopping at once for lots of fish, you’ve implied you went to purchase a load of fish at once? When it comes to animal welfare any pet supplier should be safe rather than sorry. They should ask at least a few questions to establish that you know what your doing, and to see if perhaps you need some advice. If what you reply isn’t good enough they have every right to refuse service.
@@Anakinuk007 I suppose you simply had to be there. What I’ve typed may sound like a rant in the wrong direction but I assure you we did everything correctly. I did state that we only have three neon tetras in the tank, and the tank is still pretty big (I certainly wouldn’t say it’s a beginner tank either) I’ve been keeping fish for a decade, so I’m not exactly a beginner with all this. Really not sure how anything I could have said would ‘ring alarm bells’ lmao it’s not like we were planning to smuggle the fish across the boarder. We went to purchase two Dwarf Gouramis (one previously died) and a couple of Endler Guppies. And I’ll ask again; if they’re so strict with how many fish you can have in one space, why is that they’re allowed to cram so many into all those tiny tanks? We asked the retailer this and she didn’t answer us, surprise surprise…I shouldn’t even need to go into detail with all this - the point is the rules at Pets at Home are far too strict, judgemental and demanding. I’ve never had this issue at any other pet store. You go to be a paying customer, not be misunderstood, judged and refused service.
@@box2365 - yes it seems you were done a disservice. Shouldn’t have been a problem for what you were getting. Maybe the lady didn’t catch on to the ‘dwarf’ part in the description and though you were getting regular Gouramis? Yes there are far smaller fish tanks/bowls which imo shouldn’t be allowed for sale, I would consider a 40litre tank a nano tank and a 60litre a starter. Many hobbyists later upgrade to bigger sizes. 60litre isn’t small by any means but I wouldn’t say it’s huge either. As for the fish in small tanks in fish shops, I get what you saying but these are temporary holding spaces not permanent forever homes so they’ll be just fine. And you’d hope the staff are regularly cleaning/water changes/checking all the various levels and so are cared for. Generally though I wouldn’t expect a store like Pets at home to have any properly trained staff, nothing like a knowledgeable staff member in a regular fish store.
If you haven’t received your refund yet, go back to the store that you purchased the fish from with your receipt and proof of the messages where they’ve said they’ll refund you. And then they should be able to help you in store. I’ve had good and bad experiences with them regarding fish and I do believe my local pets at homes have gotten better but some of them aren’t good 🤷🏻♀️
I tried buying a fish at pets at home they asked me for a water sample next day I used a pot n gt water out there tank n they said it was wrong ph lol if it from the UK find a parkers garden centre top advice good bred fish 🖕🏻pets at home
Did you acclimate them to the water in your tank or just the temp like many do , bought a lot of fish from pets at home over the years never an issue , this mostly happens to amateur fish keepers , lot of pople think becuse they have had aquariums a while they know what there doin ,shame really
Hi Scott, Thank you so much for your comment. Firstly, I haven't had fish for a while, I'm 31 years old and have had fish for a good 20 years or more. Secondly, I'm glad you've purchased loads of fish from Pets at Home and never had an issue. Good for you, well done. However, I'm definitely not the first and won't be the last to have had issues with fish from Pets at Home. Thirdly, I always have and always will acclimate the fish to the water in my tank. The fish are floated in my tank in the bags, and my tank water is added bit by bit into the bags that the fish are in. @@dansaquariumandmore glad to hear your acclimatisation the fish to the water ,its just amazing the amount of people who don't do that , so fair enough , we'll that sucks ,I think iam lucky and have a decent store near me , have u tested the water from your local pets at home curious what they might be , I do hear a real mixed opinion on pets at home ,although it probably would be better if these stores stopped selling fish
