I feel like Qiqi's story caused a lot of people to have misinterpretations about Baizhu :'D it's not that Baizhu doesn't actually care about Qiqi, he treats her like his own child and does what he can to keep her happy. But like a sick parent would, Baizhu hides that he's horribly unwell from everyone else, especially Qiqi. If you read his character story, you'll find that Baizhu doesn't let her see him whenever his condition is flaring up. Some days he's completely bedridden with hot flashes and vomits blood, but he keeps away from everyone and doesn't let anyone help him, only keeping Chengsheng by his side. Even in his story quest, we see Baizhu being reluctant to confess to the Traveler that he isn't feeling physically well, and Chengsheng urges him to finally tell someone. Baizhu's character story describes so much more than his quest, and we learn from there that Baizhu had watched his whole village, including his family, succumb to the plague as a young child. He was orphaned after losing his whole community, watching sickness take away his loved ones. Baizhu is someone who is afraid of having the people around him suffer in any way, and would much rather suffer an eternity of sickness and pain by himself if it means others can be happy and healthy. This makes Baizhu distance himself though, because he's aware that he's very sick himself and he's scared to burden others. It's not that Baizhu doesn't love Qiqi, rather that he shuts part of himself off from her and she can't truly be loved by him because he's not open to her.
Its kinda sad when you think about Qiqi's story after knowing more about Baizhu. Its not that he doesn't care about her...its that that's what Qiqi thinks
Baizhu is the longest I’ve waited for for a character in Genshin as a launch player. He was pretty much the only male character I wanted in the entire roster because of his design and mysterious personality. I’m happy to report that he was everything that I pretty much hoped for when I got him - smooth and effortless to use and can pretty much fit into any team comp. The fact the he also has perfect synergy with my favorite character in the entire game (Yae Miko) is a giant W. I also got him to C2 since I love using him so much and it kind of makes him pretty busted. Those 2.5 years was well worth the wait. I can’t wait to run him with Neuvillete/Furina/Kazuha tomorrow ❤️
I agree, being the only dendro character revealed in 1.0, I was set. Looks like my guesses about him are true. Also a five star male healer after near 3 years is nice.
Same here, I really like his Story quest too. Playing Genshin for 2 years, it taught me that Healer characters are the most precious and a must have characters in any games. That's what I realized when I pulled for Kokomi with just pure luck during her debut banner. It was a game changer for me since back then I was struggling a lot. So now I wanna pull for healers with different elements. I'm curious to see who's gonna be our next Pyro Healer.🐍🌱
I have both Baizhu and Kokomi but for most content, I have always preferred using the former because I just find Baizhu to be more easier to use, more quicker, the shield is nice, and less on-field. And I really love his skill that can heal the whole party in a single burst rather than by interval like most healers. So Furina will run along with Baizhu and I find this interesting. And since Furina has a full party HP drain, I just have this sneaking suspicion that Baizhu's value would skyrocket. Perhaps even higher than Kokomi's but that's my speculations. Can't wait until Furina comes out tomorrow
Yeah I feel strongly Baizhu was the last of the 3.0 5 stars to release to show the direction the Fontaine characters and mechanics would go. And it's true, healers flourish in Fontaine and Baizhu is probably the best to run with Furina to maximize her kit.
I did like Baizhu before his release and story quest but before this, reading a part of Qiqi's story about the command to cancel order is to hug her and say I love you and reading the fact that when Baizhu does it, it does not work, means that he really doesn't love or get the concept of love. That broke my heart too, and I thought I didn't need Bazhu. His banner comes along with Kaveh, and I had guaranteed and pulled but mainly for Kaveh cons. Baizhu ended up being a great support for my Cyno team comp so no regrets getting Baizhu, but that command with Qiqi story still broke my heart about Baizhu. HOWEVER, though Baizhu doesn't seem to be the type of person to love or have time for dating, he's adamant in his path to curing anyone's sickness no matter their class/social standing. He's got that compassionate demeanor even thought the word "love" doesn't seem to exist in his dictionary, he's a busy doctor at heart. His story quest does help clear out anyone's speculation of him being evil. It's like he's a morally grey doctor but that's what makes him interesting. You can still love him despite his way of doing things. It's what people say "married to profession and taking it seriously" rather than forming close relations to anyone else. I don't blame people like that even irl, they exist to do their job and will do it professionally. They will even sacrifice themselves and the chance of normal lives because someone has to do the job to help common folk who are dependent on such unique people. Also not him pricing those incense sticks at millions of mora in the start of liyue archon story 💀💀
Same here. Perhaps he does love Qiqi and it only doesn't work because she doesn't _believe_ it, but even if it is true and he doesn't love her, that's okay. The world isn't always sweet and perfect. He still tries, so he does care about her wellbeing and takes good care of her.
I remember people saying that YaoYao was a better healer than Baizhu even though they have very different healer roles. YaoYao is on-field healing with minor off-field with her skill and is mostly for bloom, and Baizhu is very good at off-field healing as well as buffing and initiating Dendro reactions including bloom, but also include the other Dendro reactions. I’m glad people are now realizing his true potential and how to actually build him right.
I dont think people actually said yaoyao is better healer, its just that by the time baizhu got released a lot of meta players playing dendro reactions already have yaoyao built as their dendro healer, its just not really worth it to throw away primogems for a healer when you already have one that is from the same element, and as stated in the video, baizhu shield was perceived as really underwhelming. Personally i think baizhu is still a good pull simply because he doesnt require much field time to do his job and even if you want him to be on field, he can drive dendro related teams pretty well because his normal attacks apply dendro. But i can understand why people kinda hesitated about him back then or even now
@@Wreckedandruinedandyeah, people were saying that Yaoyao is a better healer. She was a free 4* from the Lantern Rite, whose burst healed a lot with little investment. So a lot of people were saying (and still are saying) that Baizhu isn’t worth it, with Nahida and Yaoyao existing.
baizhu is the reason i came back to genshin at all after my long break away from it, and i personally find him the perfect substitute for someone who doesn't like nahida or doesn't want to pull for her edit: i also wanted to add that i love his backstory, and my personal theory that: the reason that trick to calm qiqi down doesn't work for him is because he wants to distance himself from her, he can't love her, because if he does end up failing in his quest for eternal life, his death is one of the ones that would hurt her the most, and i think he actively wants to avoid that.
as someone who have skill issue, doesnt have zhongli and kokomi, baizhu is my life saver especially for spiral abyss :") i got two copies of him early and the fact that you just need to cast your skill once and your team health back in full is just TOO powerful!! and i have him c1 so im basically immortal lol if is not because of him i probably wont ever reach floor 12 :") also his story quest is one of THE BEST story quest in the game imo i also thought that he is manipulative and shady doctor because he remind me of pantalone lol but nope, his story quest prove me wrong! and im glad he released during patch sumeru because hoyos story has improved since then
Bit controversial, but sometimes i find baizhu is better than nahida. Very rarely though. For example, In abyss, you can have multiple waves of tough enemies. Lets say ur using cyno. When ur in his burst, if he switches out while in his burst, it goes away. So if ur in cyno burst and kill all enemies, when a new wave comes and his burst carries over, you wont wanna switch to nahida to mark all enemies. However, baizhu off field application can, so u dont need to switch.
Yeah definitely agree! Especially with carries who can't switch back to nahida to apply her skill again mid rampage 😁 That's precisely why Baizhu was the 'missing piece' in my Cyno team for example!
Just now on the right side of this page I am recommended a video called 'Why no-one wants Baizhu'. I am no-one and I absolutely want Baizhu, but I think the video is about something else. Personally I have never been disappointed in Baizhu. I have him at C0, level 90, 9/10/10 and he rarely leaves my main team. I especially enjoy having Baizhu in the team with Neuvillette and Wriothesley, since he can just heal their drained HP on the run. Kokomi does also a great job, but to get her heals we have to stand still. It is so much easier to explore when you can just keep going and the heals will catch up.
I was originally on a similar boat about Baizhu, my only reason to pull for him was because of Cyno as I wanted to optimize further his team as I had been enjoying playing him a lot, and I knew that having a second Yaoyao would come handy in some situations. Then by pure luck I ended with Baizhu C2 as well and I regret nothing about it, the comfort healing he brings and improved dendro app feels very noticeable at least for Cyno teams, especially in multiwave, the extra heals and improved energy are amazing feats as well. He's probably the only 5* sustain support in the game rn that I'd consider getting C6 if I could. I recently got Tighnari too so I can run Cyno quickbloom and Tighnari aggra/spread in the other half with Yaoyao as my other healer, it's pretty nice! I also enjoyed quite a lot his storyquest, I didn't care for his character in two years until I did it, the plot was amazing and hoyo did an amazing job portraying his character, I was super invested into it all!
Funny how many of us who weren't *instant* fans had a similar experience! I think that speaks highly of his character design and development, so props to Hoyo for that! And agreed, he was the missing piece in my Cyno team to REALLY make it feel fluid, which makes me happy because Cyno's such a great character but it took me a while to find a team that "felt good" as well as being effective.
I wasn't one of the diehard fans that had been waiting forever for his release, nor did I have any real opinion of his character. He somewhat reminded me of green Grell (Grell from Black Butler) and that pushed me away at first as I dislike Grell a lot. When you said you received cons going for Kaveh, the amount of relate I felt became palpable. Exactly what happened to me, though I decided I wanted C6 Kaveh at some point, after seeing Baizhu's potential at C0 and C2 is extremely busted, especially underwater in Fontaine. I ended up getting C3 Baizhu, C0 Ganyu (wanted a copy of her for the namecard) before getting C6 Kaveh. As a bow main, sitting in a Kokomi puddle is useless to me, constantly moving around but Baizhu's snakes and the C2 auto strike no matter which character is on the field was absolutely incredible to me. I saw his potential and went all in, zero regrets. I had built Prototype Amber the same day I pulled for him, but then I decided I wanted his weapon because I was so impressed by him overall. It took max fates hard pity, but I don't regret Jadefall Splendor at all. I plan to C6 him soon and it's what I have looked to most these past five months. My C3 Baizhu has dethroned C2+ Zhongli in co-op; his healing is much more impressive than my DPS Zhongli's shield which only applies on burst, and Zhongli's healing at C6 is laughable. I love baizhu and have always. He is really the only tall male design that i genuinely love. He is a little more delicate and fem than the others and as a more fem male myself I felt seen. I do like morally grey characters so even his story before his quest was interesting to me. The quest made him even more amazing. I love healer characters and he goes absolutely perfect with my true main Fischl! He was an absolute my pull and I'm so happy I have him on my teams.
Yes love how elegant he feels, and everything about his design accentuates his long lines, and makes his movements look smooth and fluid. There's an element of fragility to him combined with that sort of strength/power that doesn't come from being buff and muscly, but quick and precise - like a snake! just 10/10 design
This happened to me with neuvi. I didn't like him but to get fischl, I had to pull. After 100 pulls I didn't get fischl but got 3 neuvi instead. I used him and now he's my favorite and strongest character.
it's like Hoyo knows when you don't want a character (genuinely) and they go YOU WILL TAKE THEM AND THEIR CONSTELLATIONS AND YOU WILL LOVE THEM OR SO HELP ME 😡

I also pulled on Baizhu's banner only for Kaveh and won him even though I wasn't trying to. Now i ended up loving Baizhu's gameplay so much I always put him on my best teams. He really surprised me. When I play his story quest I'm sure it'll probably convert me into an even bigger Baizhu fan, lol

I would have pulled for Changsheng alone - sassy snek is best snek! I was pleased to see that he grew on me, I walked into Baizhu a lot like you did thinking I wasn't going to like him. Then I did the trial... and I liked him? I was surprised that it wasn't wholly the gameplay I liked but that it was me liking the voicelines. The idles where Changsheng picks at him always crack me up 😂 I think the story quest sold me on him too. He just grew on me. I don't know how better to describe it, but he stays in my team rotations so they did something right 🙃
It's wild right?? I think it shows great character design across the board! He went from being one of my least liked characters to usually my first choice when I'm choosing who to play in co-op, especially if no one else has already picked a healer 😂
I was also someone who wasn't going to pull Baizhu but decided to get him on my f2p challenge account because I didn't have a 5 star healer. I had decided at the start of that account to pull for whatever 5 star healer comes first. Well I liked him so much I pulled him on my main and he's easily one of the most versatile units in the gamed has been a must on my abyss teams since getting him. Kokomi doesn't even usually make it to floor 12 but Baizhu almost always does. His story quest is one of my favorites as well.
While I don't regret skipping him on his debut banner because I wanted Alhaitham, I really do want Baizhu....and Furina....and Navia lol I may have a problem 😂 Thank you for a great video as always!
i had already leaned towards pulling for Baizhu this banner over Furina (even though i love Furina!).. i just have this feeling that i should go for Baizhu. And this video really helped me become sure of my decision! Beautiful video! im like you, i was really indifferent towards him at the start.
Pyro, Hydro, Cryo vision weilders- playable even without that nation being released Our Snek Daddy: Had to wait to be the last Dendro character released once Sumeru came out. With how much Baizhu goes out of his way to make Qiqi happy and help her, I don't think its that he doesn't care. The speaker has to say they love Qiqi the most. Baizhu has many he cares about but also distant due to his past and knowing he'll die young if he doesn't achieve immortality. Me, I fell in love with Baizhu as soon as we meet him in the story. I checked right away if he was playable. He wasn't and spent 1.5 years keeping a "Just in case Baizhu" resource pile. C6'd him. Love him. If you have Nahida he can work with her or is an alternative. Built him as DPS and he carried me hard. I hope we get Qiqi's story quest and more Baizhu when Chenyu Vale releases.
I was the one who waiting for him since 2021 when I just started genshin and encountered him in the quest and I’m loving how extremely comfortable he is in the team. I even have Nahida but it’s not like every team in the world needs her yet healers are always welcome in any team concept, like the narwhal we fought.. I think I have survived thru it just because I had baizhu with my Wrio And Lyney loosing hp cause it’s their combat and Lumine 😭
I'm so glad the long wait was worth it and he met your expectations 🥰 HE really is just incredibly comfortable to have on the team, and doubly so in the OW with his skill healing and passive healing while pick stuff up 😂
He's def worth a shot! I was also very skeptical about him, got him trying to get Kaveh (took me only 20 wishes though 😅) and I just use him all the time!
I really don't prioritize new characters cuz they will get rerun soon. Furina will do the same. Baizu won't get rerun until next Natlan. Even though I am on 50 50, let's try luck with Baizu
You are underrated. I love how u explained everything about baizhu. He is amazing but people can't see it. They skipped coz either they already had yaoyao or didn't know what to do with their emptions when they realised the character they waited for has a funny kit..

Im surprised with the similarity with our banner story. I also unintentionally got C2 in 100 pulls just randomly wishing trying to get a Kaveh (who i never built afterwards btw). It was my luckiest banner where i normally lose my 50/50s and for a character that I didn’t actually plan to go hard for
That's wild! :O Yeah typically my 5 stars *always* come exactly the 78th **or** 79th wish, never before that, and I've won and lost a fair share of 50/50s - enough to have fairly high constellations for most standard 5 stars oof.
I didn't pull for him first cause Yae was next and I wanted her so badly for my Tighnari team. Now, the thing is, I'm torn between Furina's C1 and Furina C0 + Baizhu C0, since he'd be great on the aggravate team with Yae/Fischl/Kazuha. But, then again, I loved Furina's personality and the thing she's trying to do gameplay-wise. so....yeah
May your wishes be lucky enough that you don't have to choose 🙏 I personally aways go for a new characters over constellations because I love having as much flexibility with teams as possible :D
I am debating getting him for my Neuvillette, Furina Team (& Raiden), as a healer is needed for Furina and a shielder/interruption resistance is really nice for Neuvillette. I also LOVE dendro reactions, every other reaction now feels unsatisfying and empty too me. But I was also going to go for Ayato, so I am really struggeling with Primogems :(
yeah a shield is really nice for Neuvi because you don't want to get interrupted 🤔 A tough decision for sure, but you have the next 3 weeks to save up primos and decide which one you want more!
Even at C0, he's my comfort character in abyss in pair with Alhaitham. Glad I have him. He's story was also one of the well written backstory. It removes our doubts or suspicion on him why he needs to be immortal. Also love Hu Tao's presence during his story quest and why do they have such dynamics was also explained.
I'm on the fence as to whether pull for him..I could use the interruption/healing/dendro mix but I think I read that c0 wasn't good at all and I really doubt Id be able to get more than that this time around.
I got double baizhu in 1 ten pull and he is so so good!! I build him hp/dendro/crit as a hybrid dps and healer and he does so good damage. His normal lvl talent is lvl 1 and his spread hit does like 12k/13k its so crazy I was expecting like 2-3k damage cuz everyone says he is so bad. Also even though I build him as a hybrid healer on deepwood memories he still heals so much while dealing good damage. IM GLAD I GOT HIM :DD
I wanted Baizhu since the first time I saw him but never thought Hoyo would give us someone so cool. When I found out he was coming, I skipped Nahida for a second time so I could get him. The story quest made me love him even more, I use him constantly, and I have no regrets at all in pulling for him.
My issues with him, his Burst animation is extra longer, which is something I hate in Abyss, and his shield doesn't really provide the resistance to interruption I expect from it.
I always think of long burst animations as a double-edged sword actually. They do take up a little extra time, but at the same time that does mean they give you a much more generous i-frame window. Just look at the i-frame use at 06:35!

I'd be really interested to get your thoughts on something - I'm currently waiting for Yoimiya's rerun and was planning on building her team with Yelan, Yunjin and Zhongli. However, with all the hype around Furina, I'm wondering whether that team would function even better with Furina as the buffer and then Baizhu as the driver for Furina's fanfare stacks / team healer, as well as providing interruption resistance for Yoimiya (and some splash damage via blooms and some burgeons). Do you think Baizhu provides enough interruption resistance for Yoimiya to consistently get off her full string of normal attacks? I'm thinking of Abyss, floor 12 in particular. Thanks!
I haven't tried the team yet but now that you've mentioned it I WILL! 👀 My usual Yoi team is (Yoi+) Thoma/Zhongli, Yunjin, and Xingqiu/Yelan, and both Thoma and Zhongli have excellent shields. I want to say Baizhu's **is** strong enough, but as I've never paired the two together, I'll take it for a test spin to make sure. I will report back once I've tested it 😎

Was finally able to properly test Baizhu during this last limited event, and I have to admit he was incredibly comfortable in a bloom/hyperbloom team. Ended up pulling him over Furina and couldn’t be happier.
Baizhu is truly a great chrcter. I had him at c0. It was good enough but having him till c2 was a game changing. If my primo is enough, I want his c4 & c6 too. During completing story quest in Liyue back then, I already like him at first look. almost 2 years of waiting was such a pain. He was the first chrcter 1 never regret pulling in any aspect. The only aspect that disappoints me is his voice over, & multipliers, & a little bit on his NA. But all this were a preference. His sassy voice-over IN MY OPINION doesn't fit his look/expression. I expect it to be cool, calm, a lil bit low but soft, & sarcastic. Can also sounds a bit fun. Disappointment in his NA was it melee ranged attack. I was hoping that he has longer range but hit acupuncture art fighting style is really beautiful which is don't hate but still wanting a long range atk. His healing multipliers were balanced and enough for a kit him. Just his base atk was very low and his dmg pretty decent which considerable as he is a support healer. But overall I have no complaint aside from his voice-over, I lowkey wanted it to be changed severely. (Disclaimer: I have absolutely NO HATE on his va neither I know him.)

I waited for baizhu since i started in Oct of 2020, i was upset with his kit at the start but i c6 r2'd him day 1 cause i loved his character, even with the lack of story from him we had. i now force him onto every team i can and i over all just love him, his story after his released jsut made me fall in love with him even more.
Honestly, maybe its because im a huge baizhu fan who waited, saved and re-saved for those 2 and a half years because hyv never wanted to release him 🤡 but its not that he doesnt care about qiqi! people harp on the "baizhu saying he loves her doesnt work" but he very clearly cares about her in his vls :( him and qiqi both know whats, it just sucks to hear bcuz he had a lot of misinfo floating around because ppl were being weird about him... Hyv genuinely made him flop hard, he didnt have any important big roles and in his release patch KAVEH got the spotlight... i was hoping he'd be a health steal character like how grass types are in pokemon since it would of been an unused mechanic that would boost him up a bit. Anyway, hes an amazing healer and helps my cyno out immensely and besides having life-steal hes everything i wanted! I'd be pulling for his c1 rn as hes like my top 3 favs but they decided to put him with furina... i really didnt think theyd give him the yoimiya treatment but wow, the mid wrio/venti banner before this and putting baizhu with the hydro archon, they really wanted ppl to pull for her
I don't think it's so much that people were being "weird about him", but prior to his actual release, there was very little easily available obvious info/backstory on him! Now that he's out we have his magnificient story quest as well as his detailed backstory, and you can clearly see what kind of character he really is, whereas before most people only had snippets. Plus I wouldn't be surprised if the general hate QiQi receives from players would also make those (of us) who love her extra protective and ready to jump into arms at the slightest sign of mistreatment 🥺 (of which there is no of course) Fwif: baizhu x furina is an utter dream combo - these two will be walkign hand in had everywhere!

Baizhu makes Cyno comfy to play And he also helps in my Miko-Tighnari team. And now he works beautifully in my Wrio burnmelt comp And he comes with a cute snake! I got him c1 accidentally trying to get Kaveh who was extra stubborn, and I'm glad I did.

When I pulled for Baizhu then, he sent Qiqi instead and I did not have wishes to spare to get him. And now, Furina is way higher priority than him, sorry Baizhu. I would need to get insanely lucky to put my primos on his banner because there are more interesting characters coming and there are a few among them who I would really hate to miss.
It happened with Neu I liked his design but I was saving badly for Raiden C2(c1 atm) but had like 190 wishes so I was hmm I'm missing 2 Cs for Xingqiu that was on Neu banner, if he comes it will be "good" but I already got Ayato with his signature weapon so let's give 40 pulls that I had 50/50 = 2 Neu's and then 1 Xinxqiu but bought the last one I think he was on paimon's bargains that month, then I realized how much I like Neu(Hydro+HP% sets and Prototype not even capped) even more powerful than Ayato's+Signature. Now about Baizhu, I wanted him since the beginning, pulled but didn't get him, I didn't mind as much(but I put myself into getting him for sure his next rerun) since I already had Zhongli C1 and Yao Yao C4-6 then went for Nahida. Now with enough primos got Furina(Festering Desire) and him (Deepwood set hp-ER+200%+Prototype R5) , I'm building them right now to go with Al Haitham and Miko, yes I have Nahida but I can use her in another team. What it really surprise me is that Baizhu is amazing due his healing+no interruption, dendro shred+ and is mostly the best healer to make Furina top stack more than any other healer/support, they will be more likely glue forever.
after seeing this video i pulled for baizhu and won him on my 50/50!! i’ve been seeing so many guides and team builds saying how great he is to use with furina and neuvillette!! my only regret is not getting him sooner bc i never realized how comfy he was to play all this time 😭
Honestly i think one of the reasons everyone was hating him was bc people expect healers to also deal op dmg while doing their supposed job and whey they see “low numbers” one a unit they trash it same thing happened with kokomi and it will happen again with the next 5 stars healer lmao
The exact same thing happened to me on his banner! 100 wishes and all (well... not winning 3 50/50's tho lol). I can't say I was won over and dread when I feel I need to use him; those "I'm dying" coughs make me mute the game
I had pretty much the same experience. I tried to get Kaveh, got Baizhu at early pity except I didn’t get Kaveh and I benched Baizhu because I had already built YaoYao and I didn’t want to fight the Baptist 30 times. Now I’m building him because I found out Furina’s damage boost cap is like 129% or something stupid at max level and Baizhu is her best party healer besides maybe Noelle.
Ok so i need to discuss it with people here but i am having a hard time understanding how a character that isn't kind and generally a walking green flag can get genuine hate. Like, how can you dislike or go to despise a fictional character because they have bad motives, walk on a grey area or are antagonistic? Those kind of characters are my personal favorite because i think that having someone that have flaws, downsides, wrong motives or way to do things are exceptionally more interesting and human than characters that are all perfect and sweet. I mean i could understand not liking if it touches a subject that is sensible for people such as past trauma this kinds of things, or hating a character in a sarcastic way, but i really cant visualise how it is possible to have genuine disdain for a character like baizhu because the way he pursues immortality and interact with others is kind of greyish. I mean... doesnt that make him interesting?? Idk, even for characters like dottore that is objectively extremely bad morally how can you like, hate him 😅 like you know, being genuine frustrated by his character?? Idk how to explain but it just confuses me
For me there's a distinct difference between whether I *like* a character and whether I find them *interesting*. Many characters tick both boxes, but not all do. It's also pretty common for a character to start off *unlikeable but compelling*, and become likeable over the course of their story, or as you learn more about them, etc. In stuff like books or films, those tend to be more interesting than most other combinations... but in games I just don't enjoy playing as them. Morally grey is fine - e.g. Arthur Morgan is fantastic - but a character who is interesting but *unlikeable* to me is one I tend to enjoy playing noticeably less. Def a personal preference thing though, perfectly valid to for people to enjoy playing characters who work like that!
I think there's a huge difference between "having flaws" and being literally evil (this is not in reference to Baizhu, just in general), and also there's a difference between not finding someone's personality appealing, and actively *hating* them, and finding someone interesting vs liking them. I can find a character/person interesting without liking them, and likeable without finding them interesting, and everything in between :D I said multiple times that I wasn't interested in Baizhu before I got to know him, but I never *hated* him. Re: Baizhu's first impressions case; the quest for immortality for selfish reasons isn't in of itself, bad but would only have been "bad" if he was using or needlessly putting *others* at risk to achieve it, which for some reason was precisely the initial "vibe" he gave off for some people, myself included. The fact that he not only isn't that sort of a person, but also his ulterior motives are actually quite selfless, just highlights him not only as an *interesting* character, but a good one. I admit I have a special soft spot for people who strive to do good, real and fictional. As to how people can have strong opinions of fictional characters; a well written character is one who makes you see them as a real person, and thus you react to them as if they were one. It also means that as you get to know them more, your opinion will likely change, one way or another.

Or maybe I should put it another way: to me, disliking a character inherently means getting some sort of frustration out of them. A frustration that would make you think "I dont want to see them or I'll get in a bad mood" (with varying degree) it's kind of a strong word in my head. And I cant really see how you can have *genuine* frustration over something like morally grey [to] evil characters, sorta.. For baizhu as an example, I could get that prior to his storyquest, he totally seemed like a selfish man using a lovable child, qiqi, to his advantage for personal benefits which is kinda very wrong and it's ofc common sense to not align with that, but doesnt that make he and qiqi have more depth to them? Giving their dynamics emotions and reasons to love qiqi even more! Why being frustrated from having more reason to get attached to a character I already like? It makes both of them more interesting, have more flesh, feels more real! I guess I just love morally bad characters because they make the sweet ones even better 😅 even for evil or annoying types (such as scara ready to tackle you at any moment) I could not say "I dislike that character" in a non-sarcastic way. Because yeah, I dislike what they do! But I love that!! Give me more of their bad things! **I love to hate it** yknow what i mean? And for that it's not a real dislike, a real frustration that (for genshin) would make me skip a character entirely, or more generally, not wanting to see them 🤔 what will do instead is finding them boring, triggering or simply ugly perhaps. Gotta admit that liking/finding a character interesting =/= pulling for them since gameplay is ofc a huge part for gachas So after reading, rereading and writing this whole lot of text from both of you and also me, I realised that maybe it boils down to the different view we have of "disliking" a character and the meaning behind it I guess? And of course personal preferences to what is likeable and unlikeable which is 100% normal and valid
Baizhu is definitely one well crafted character... except, that time I ranted to the Devs on how bad he is during Co-op. He was very unreliable on C0, the only character I pulled intentionally for C1, His character reminds me of Orochimaru. Good thing I got him early during C1 pulling and I was contented. -
Baizhu is one of my favorite healers and his pseudo shield is so helpful, when I heard about him I couldn't control myself and even got his weapon 🤣He's now part of all my dendro teams! At first I tried him with my wanderer, and I have to say, If i don't have layla in my wanderer's teams I definitely put baizhu. I'm also making plans to put him in my future Cyno team 🥰 Also I love his character design, his hair is perfect!! Also, loved the video, amazing as always!! ❤❤
I liked him but his design was ugly. Then they updated his design but they changed his voice so he was super annoying and flamboyant. But then they switched back to his old voice and he was likeable again but by that time i already had a dendro team and didnt need him. I also really like qiqi and was worried he was using her for nefarious purposes. So i was glad to find out he truly cared for her.
Am I tripping balls or did they added dendro effects to his attack animations (the green Chinese symbols)? I clearly remember thinking his animations looked too plain when he firsr released. And now there are a lot of green cool effects. Did I jump into an alternate reality?
@@raptori I was in doubt about it as well, so I checked onlin and found a post when someone months ago was complaining about baizhu feeling too plain and he said "they even had to buff his attack animations post release". So I'm quite confident the green symbols weren't there day one

This. The first time I 36 starred Abyss one of my teams was Baizhu, Qiqi, Yaoyao, Xingqui/Kuki. Baizhu built for damage. Just about any support can be built for damage if you try.

i hate kaveh. and it's more funny when i take him c6 before baizhu on their bannner. no apologies to kaveh fans, i listened too much bad things abot baizhu from them on his banner. first thing i do when i pull c6 kaveh i go to kaveh mains and ask them about kaveh c6 gameplay. their reaction was very fun :D
the moment you mentioned baizhu is manipulative i felt so bad wanring to pull him. im just so scared people will think that by pulling or liking majioulative cgaracters, specifically the ines that manipulate emotionally... it means somethung secretive abt you. yes baizhu never striked me as manipulative and even the qiqi hug situation can be easily explained as baizhu just not showing emotions and being colder character. the studying situation could also be explained as "its a contract or a transaction in baizhu's mind - qiqi gets a home and in return baizhu can study her in some way" yes his stiry quest exolained reasonung and he doesnt seem selfish, actually i never knew the qiqi facts so thats why im scared after this video. But i just cant stop being scared bx the video said he could be manipulative and i am scared. Does tgat mean i should nit be pulling fir the character as i planned?
Nah people won't think badly of you wanting to pull for him! It's just a personal preference thing - some people absolutely love playing anti-heroes or morally black people, some people don't. Both preferences are perfectly fine, and nobody should feel bad either way. Kinda like how in Red Dead Redemption 2, some people play Arthur as a good character, some make the "darker" choices - all good either way! Even at his worst, Baizhu at worst seemed like, medium grey - after all he's literally a healer! The difference after understanding his motives and perspective is that he's actually a good person behind the slight slyness 😁
First of all Baizhu isn't even a morally grey character imo (if you play his story quest), but even if he were, no one (sane) going to think that reflects badly on you! 💜
I don't like his design and didn't like his story quest. It felt like it was more about the snake than him personally. But his kit, especially the unique off field ability, is amazing.
I had the opposite Kaveh experience. I pulled for Candice on Ganyu banner back then, after 60 pulls, got C3 Kaveh Fischl and no Candice. :( I agree Baizhu's story quest really put him in a different light. Unfortunately for me, I just cannot stand snakes.... no matter how witty Changsheng is... I don't think I can get past my snake phobia.🫥
