This is my first time ever really outlining. So I figured I had to test out the most popular methods! 37 scenes outlined and I'm ready for my #24hourwriteathon!

Ive been using Katytastic's 3 Acts, 9 Blocks, 27 Chapters religiously for all my stories (including my YA anime fantasy pentalogy) and I swear by it. Ive tried STC, Snowflake & Freytag but they were all struggle buses for me. What I love about Katytastic's method is you dont need to have a 27 chapters novel, you can expand or contract each beat accordingly. Thus, Immediate Effect can be one line while Fun & Games can be several chapters. My current WIP has 26 chapters since I merge the Converge & Battle beats. Subplots included, each beat ends up filling a chapter after all.

@johne.nobody2946
@johne.nobody2946 4 года назад
Don’t forget to hyphenate your compound adjectives preceding a noun- “government assigned bunker” is ambiguous in its meaning, the proper way to write it out is: government-assigned bunker. See the importance of a the hyphen? You could have the greatest novel in the world, it will be laughed out of a publisher’s office if it isn’t grammatically perfect, from a technical standpoint. I hope you have success in your writing! Have a good one.

You lasted longer than I did. When you said you’d complete ongoing projects in 2020, I thought, “That’s a great idea!!!” Mid February I realized I had to write new stuff as I worked on previous projects. Otherwise I just got so sad and frustrated! “Dark night of the soul,” indeed. So I have two new projects waiting in the wings, and they are keeping me sane as I continue my edits. Sigh. Plus, 15 word summary??? It took me ages to get it down to 100 words! You are Superwoman. :D

The need for air during times of social distancing is so understandable and yet so weird. I was never an outside person, but I started going for a jog regularly now. Anyway, I'm gonna have to try the 3-9-27 method someday, this is the first time I've heard about it. I usually use the snowflake method. I'll have to translate my one-sentence summary of my current project (since I write in German) but here it is basically (it's a sequel to a novel I already wrote): Daïna struggles with trauma and forgiveness, while an angel swears vengeance against her father's murderer.

The way I outlined my last novel, I made a table and in one column put the Save The Cat beats, and in another I put the beats for Abbie Emmons' outlining method, aligning them where they aligned to the best of my ability, and then wrote out the beats of my own story to match both relatively well. Hey, it worked! Also, my fifteen (okay, a little more) word summary: A sorcerer-in-training from 1553 teams up with a modern-day high schooler after accidentally transporting an evil sorcerer into the year 2015.

I watch Abbie Emmons frequently and always feel energized and encouraged after. I also like Kate's idea, here, of combining different methods as-appropriate or as-helpful or as-needed ... but your idea of making a table and aligning the beats really intrigues me. I'd love to see an example. Have you tried it with more than two methods at a time?

I don't really have a method for outlining??? I just kind of plot out what I want in chapters and scene ideas and then fill in the missing things when I'm done with the first draft. I might try these methods at some point! seems interesting to try a different outlining method for my second novel :D A small-town detective struggles with her current case while maintaining her sanity when it becomes personal. I can't believe you managed to cover all of this in one video - I think STC took me two, and my snowflake method video was over 40 minutes 😅 I haven't heard of 27 chapters, so I definitely want to give that a go - one of the challenges I've often had with other methods is that they don't give you enough to work with, so 27 scenes sounds like a great starting point!

Usually I only outline after the first draft, I tend to lose interest in the story if I do it first. I do like the Story circle/Plot embryo method (by Dan Harmon/Rachael Stephen), though. It's very visual, and I like to keep it in mind as a kind of compass even when I don't fill it. It really helps me with character development if anything. Good luck with the 24 hr writeathon!!

Ah, this is exactly what I needed in order to get into a mood for writing tonight! Thank you for always giving me motivation with your videos! Also, hi, it's me, the weirdo who has an outlining method where I actually make 2 outlines, aka you can calla me your worst nightmare. :D My method isn't anything I read up on or anything, it's just something that I kinda came up on the go and that works for me. Basically I just do one general outline where I write chapter by chapter everything that happens and the order in which things happen in the chapter. Then I basically do another more detailed outline where I write every scene out including dialog, character's expressions within the dialog and also I write down the places between the dialog where I'm most probably going to be describing/showing/telling the reader something important information. I don't know if that makes any sense to anyone else but that's how I manage to organize my messy thoughts :D Also I would give you the 15 words summary of my WIP but it's a dystopian novel and there are a lot of secrets unraveling in the story and I can't really give a good summary of it without revealing too much stuff :D

If I don't outline chapter-by-chapter, my outlining method usually just consists of me writing down the title of the book in a new Scrivener file and just blurting out all the things I want to happen over the course of the story in chronological order. I have literally taken up multiple pages in Scrivener doing this. I have a 6,000+ word file for a series I'm writing where I did this exact method for a series, before I knew that it would become 8+ books... oops.

I'm what Ellen Brock describes as a "methodological plotter" and she has a series of videos about the 4 types of plotter/pantser types she has identified. I like to write a detailed outline and a scene card to use before I write any scenes in my novel. I do have a neurological conditions that results in memory problems, so all this detailed prep work is a MUST for me. My novel in 15 words: Sonia is trying to fulfill her mother's dream, when she learns she is going blind.

So far my favorite method of outlining has been the snowflake, though there isn't a clear outline on how to create scenes for your story it does help fleshing things from the plot to characters out though. I've struggled with save the cat, I don't know why. I have a one-sentence summary but it's more than 15 words, it's like 25 but I don't know how to shorten it anymore, and in his book, Randy says it's okay if it's a bit longer than 15, but just make it as short as you possibly can. Here's my one-sentence so far: A shy psychic woman must learn to stand up for those she loves, or a soul-eating demon will claim the lives of everyone around her.

As someone who is not super into structured outline formulas, it was really fun to watch you work through a couple of them. I generally just write scenes on notecards and then move them around. Although right now I'm going through each element of the story and essentially giving it its own outline, so I can see what's extraneous and what's missing. Which I guess is maybe a thing I got from Brandon Sanderson? Not entirely sure.

Your points around the 5:00 mark are exactly why I use BOTH STC and the 27 Chapter method to outline! I do STC first specifically for the character development in each of the main characters. Then I go through the driving plot and puzzle-piece in where each beat of the character arcs fit in with which points of the 27 chapter plot. Sounds more complicated than it is as Im writing this out lol, but its much easier to keep track of where each character should be at the different beats and how the driving plot affects their personal subplots.

I was feeling unmotivate about my whole project, then remebered, I have to keep writing becuase I want to write the donkey scene. I can't write the funny donkey scene unless I write all this other stuff first! It's helping me power through. P.S. I liked the snow flake method, as far as I have tried it (the first sentence, then a paragraph of plotting). I ended up making it my own and built on it, adding more details each time I expanded the plot.

I tried save the cat but needed more guidance so I've been using the Snowflake method and LOVING it! Since it switches back and forth between character development and plot, I'm less likely to get stuck. Currently, writing a list of every scene in my novel and if you told me I would do that at the beginning I would have said helllllll no. lol Not sure if you've read the Snowflake method book, but it is a quick read and actually illustrates the method through fairytale/storybook characters. Really glad I got it!

I come up with various things that I note down over time, but when I sit down to actually outline, I like to use what I like to call the Simpsons method. For each character and thread, you work out how you want it all to end, then ask why and how back to the beginning of the story. You can see it in the randomness of some episodes of the Simpsons, but of course the stories outlined don't have to be random. The whole thing keeps you focused on the end result without too many tangents and ensures that everything you want to resolve (and remember to include) is resolved by the end. Then you can go back in and add extra stuff, red herrings etc. if you want to. Not overly complicated and works for me.

I used Katy's method for last November's NaNo Project Night. I talked about it in one of the lead up to NaNo videos I made, I think. I liked it because you don't have to have a huge break down of information or write paragraphs. You can literally just put a sentence or two in each spot. My only other novel I pantsed. I use a hybrid of Kat's 3-9-27 outlining method, the hero's journey, and literary alchemy (which it mostly just symbolism but has some good plot points too). I do own Save the Cat so I'll probably give that a read soon. My main WIP is about three sisters who, after the death of their mother, are transported to this other world that they find out their mother is originally from and in order to get home they must rid the world of the corruption that has taken place.

I've basically had the same relationship with outlines over the years! I'd try, quit half-way through (okay, less than halfway through hahaha). Lately, though, I find that I really like the basic 3-act structure's outline! I go by the one on Abbie Emmons' channel. It sounds like it's probably the same as Save the Cat, but I haven't really worked with Save the Cat, so idk! I've also been trying to get into scene cards, which are also on Abbie's channel (from a book called Story Genius)! I find that filling out every scene before I start writing is a no-go, but getting a few ahead of the game is great! I'm excited to join in on the 24-hour writathon! Motivation has been at a low (I watched a season of Killing Eve yesterday instead of planning for camp nano hahahaha), so I'm pumped! Most likely won't be there for all of it, but I'm excited to see how long I last xD

15 word summary (that's much more than 15 words): A teenage witch finds herself in the middle of a battle for the ultimate power of the Gods. What she doesn't realize is the battle is over her. *dun dun duuuuuuun* I use the save the cat method, write out scenes from this outline and then put those into JK Rowling's sheet plotting thing where I keep track of different plot threads and characters arcs to help track characters and make sure I don't forget about people... and then because I'm anal about it I sort all of my scenes from this back into a file I have in Scrivener following the Save the Cat method and this is what I follow when I eventually draft. I'll also copy these scenes onto scene cards and make additional notes if I need to change things as I draft. Pretty much the goal is to get the plot and all the threads as organized as possible so I don't have to think much drafting and to make the editing process not a complete nightmare.

I don't usually outline, but for the novel I'm currently working on I've found that I need to because I need to plan out how every single action affects the world, battle strategies, world politics and more. Right now, I'm just dumping all of my thoughts into one document that I'll sort later to make it cohesive. Under 15 word summary: Scottish-inspired clans, wars and politics.

This is my first story that I'm trying to outline. I recently worked through Save the Cat! Writes a novel and made a kind of template in Scrivener with the different beats, then I took all the ideas for scenes that I already had and filled them into the beats that seemed to fit them best. This showed me where I had major holes in my story (according to this method at least) and gave me a chance to come up with appropiate scenes to fill in. Save the Cat is the only method I've really looked into more deeply, but I found it extremely helpful so far. I also imagine it's a good method for an already existing story to find and pin point possible problems with the story. As for the summary, let me give this a try: When the witch suddenly disappears it's up to her two familiars to find her. (Yay! I did it, haha!)

I use the Mary E. Pearson method that I discovered last year I recently ordered the Save the Cat Writes a Novel so I'll be reading it soon and I've vaguely heard about the snowflake method and am now interested in watching Katytastics (don't know if I wrote that correct) video on her writing. My current wip, 15 words, yikes, but I'll try! With an undesired prophecy foretold, now Shalimar must save the human world from Night Creatures.

Oh hey! My outlining method is kinda like the snowflake method! I usually write a few bullet points to summarise the major events of the story, write a long form summary in complete sentences and go in depth to everything I want to happen in the story and with the characters. Finally, I kinda simplify/expand that into summaries for each scene

Yeah, outlining just helps me brainstorm and have a direction. I never jot down all the scenes (because I don't know them all yet lol) - my brain comes up with things as I write, so it's a hodgepodge for me.

I've really fallen in love with the Save the Cat method, and it's helped me to see my story ideas as a whole, if that makes sense, so I'm probably going to keep with that one for a little while. Mostly my outlining just involves me rambling onto the page and just writing out walls of text about what I want to happen lol. I've tried the Snowflake Method wayyyy back in the day, but every time I tried it, I just could not get into it. It sounds so interesting, and I'm a really detail-oriented writer, but god, that method makes me want to pull my hair out for some reason. ALSO, girl can you tell me what brand those colorful n' clicky pens you are using are?! They look so purdy!

I would like to see you take pieces of all 3 and make your own and see how that works for you. I've done the snowflake method and I am not much of a outliner in that sense. I like to do a basic outline then see where each scene takes me. Lol

I'm a pantser and I really can't outline. BUT it's SOOO useful to have an idea of where I'm going, so I adore the Save The Cat method. I can't outline scene by scene the Setup, the Fun and Games, the Bad Guys Close in (or any multi-scene beat), but having an idea of my purpose and what goes where, makes wonders for my writing. I've tried a lot of other methods and I can't really go anywhere. With Save the Cat I have ideas for scenes but I never outline them, so I don't feel restricted to follow it. I love this way so much

I enjoyed hearing these methods compared. I've partially read my Save the Cat book -- the one that was purloined with permission so as to specialize in novels (vs. also scripts, etc.), and I got something out of it but need to read more of it. I've dabbled with the Snowflake method, and just yesterday I learned about the 3-9-27 method, which is what I'm leaning toward now. As I said, I enjoyed your vid, but in the end I wasn't quite sure what you thought of the Snowflake method in general, so if you should post a response about that here, that'd be helpful. And btw, I really liked when you wore your glasses. I thought they were very flattering. :)

Since I write screenplays, I've used the Save the Cat! method many times. Another good source is The Writer's Journey, which is based on Joseph Campbell's Hero's Journey. And finally, my new favorite is Beat by Beat, a book by Todd Klick. My question for you, Kate, is who is your antagonist or what is the antagonistic force? This should be part of your logline (one-sentence summary) as it indicates the conflict. My most recent script has this logline: A struggling NYC model resorts to Freeganism to survive, putting her fledgling plus-sized career in peril.

I outline like a maniach what I mean by that is I draw maps of the world borders for every country write down each country's history current monarch and wars, trade and relashinships between the countries. Then I also create different Languages with each one having there own unique alphabet and mark on my map were there spoken and what languages are similar to them. I also create full family trees for each character that includes the history of there family who founded there family name and all the rest. There just a few examples of how I plan story's ( I only write fantasy ) there's so much more I could talk about but I think this comment is getting long.

Katytastics Outline Method is great! However, I seem to change my preferred way to outline with every damn book, it‘s ridiculous :D I feel like I tried most of ‘em in the past few years. Heros Journey, Save the Cat, Plot Embryo, Snowflake Method, How to Write Kissing Books-Way, 7 Beats Method or 3 Acts, 9 Blocks, 27 Chapters ... I’m probably missing some methods. But you name it, I probably tried it out 😂🙈 But as I said, I seem to forget how to do it, every damn time. Every time I think I know how to do it, I struggle again, and change something up 😂

I've found that I literally cannot outline before starting to write or else I'll completely lose interest in the story, but so far that seems to be working for me. I have like five ongoing stories right now (because I can't focus on just one thing to save my life), but I'll give you the one-sentence summary of the one I've been trying to devote most of my attention to: "A police detective turned serial killer is tasked with solving a string of murders that he committed."

What I've noticed for me is I always attempt to outline. As I try to write and expand on it i tend to drift away from it. I usually just write the little things i want to happen but as i write adding the details to bridge the gap changed. Or I have an Ah-ha moment that clears something up so things change. It kind of works but for the most part it's only my base because sometimes chapters get entirely scrapped or one feels too short and I have to merge them.
