Time to learn R.L. Stine's secret to writing over 300 books, outlining a novel in 4 days, and not getting sucked down the hole of writer's block.
0:08 What's R.L. Stine's writing routine/process, anyways??
6:03 The experiment!
16:31 Bonus thoughts & R.L. Stine motivation & also the crappy alternative titles I came up with for Project Death...
☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
What do you think of R.L. Stine's process and mindset? Do you think you could outline an entire novel in 4 days? (And also....2 weeks. 2 weeks to write a first draft. AHH.) With enough practice, do you think you could get there? (I don't think I could.)
Do you have any authors you might be trying to channel their ~writing spirit~ this NaNoWriMo?

His books are pretty short, though, about 20,000-30,000 words or novella-sized. Basic math, but that's 10-15 days writing 2,000 words a day.

I am also terrible at titles! I called my current project The Crow for the longest time and then was like "help I need a title??" to my bff and she came through with a good one. Like Harry Potter, Goosebumps wasn't allowed in my house growing up (although I wasn't super mad about it... horror was *not* my thing), but I also can't imagine completely outlining in 4 days. I'm having a hard enough outlining in a month... and I'll be channeling my own writing spirit this NaNo b/c I don't think I have the capability to do much more than that (two jobs plus writer life~)
@vivianwakoff
@vivianwakoff 4 года назад
I have a week (5 days) to "discover" the story, working from basic 3-act structure all the way to a details scene map. I'm on the same camp as R.L. Stine: the more I prepare before sitting down to write, the less likely I am to get stuck. In fact, I don't believe in writer's block at all. Period. Whenever I get close to getting stuck in a scene or sequence I just skip to another part of the story I want to write more. I tend to write out of order (as in: write the ending before the middle and only then tackling the first chapter, for instance). I've been doing it for years and it has worked wonders for me so far. This NaNoWriMo I want to channel my inner Gaiman. I'm going to try to write magical realism for the first time and I need all the help I can get. I'm a plot-driven author. Lyrical isn't really something I've done before. I'm not sure I can...

Even if his works are formulaic, I don't think that's a bad thing! He's spent years perfecting how he writes his books, and it works, therefore he can keep pumping out great books. I find it's the same with art too, once artists find a simple original style that's appealing, it's a lot easier to make more pieces. It's just hard to get there! Also, are we able to suggest names? 'Death by Name ' would be mine 👀

Your writing experiment videos help me to realize that writing routines exist, in which I have no routine at all (or maybe I do but I can't see it, haha). Also I do agree with R. L. OMG, I can't wait to watch this!! And, to answer your second question, the person whose spirit I'll be trying to channel this NaNoWriMo is definitely you. I get that you're not published yet, but I really would like to try the fast drafting method. I usually can get a story finished pretty quickly depending on how interested I am in the premise. I have a list of stories I'd like to get written and hopefully submitted to a couple lit mags over the next two months. Plus...I heard back from that lit mag I mentioned a while ago...the two stories I submitted to them were rejected :( But it's okay! I still have 4 more lit mags to hear back from and two of my stories are "in-progress" on Submittable, so keep your fingers crossed! I should hear back from one of them any day now (before Nov. 24th, I think), and I think it's my best story yet. I also submitted a story that got a higher tier rejection from one of the most respected lit mags in the country to a BIG name lit mag. They pay $2/word, and the story is 8,279 words, so...Definitely keep your fingers crossed for that one! I hope you're doing well and that life is going smoothly for you. Give Duke a head rub for me lol! Take care!

Titles are difficult, but fun too. Could always throw some latin at it, Nominis means name and sounds like ominous, which is the right mood for death, so: "Nominis Exchange" Or assuming the exchange is contractual, Legalese for name, but let's give it a framing device to make it more clear, so: "Singed, The Gravely Denoted" (like a hella creepy letter contract)

R.L Stine literally was my favourite Point horror writer. I got a gold medal at the library for the summer reading challenge after reading The Baby-sitter. Beach House is one of the first books I can remember reading other than Enid Blyton's famous five books. The Hitch-Hiker was the most shocking twist in a book I ever had growing up! He's my childhood hero, and will always hold as one of my favourite authors.

I'm a nobody in the writing world and I don't have a fanbase like Stine, but I don't really write from my heart either. Yes, the stories in my head I want to write are exciting and important to me, but in the back of my mind I always have the potential people who would hopefully want to read my story.

I didn't think titling all of my chapters would help me but it actually did. I find that often it helps with the setting or direction. Even if you feel like you need to change it. In my current project I changed one chapter names from the very generic "proving grounds" to the much more fitting (all be it juvenile) "Carbon Fiber Hardbody" and boom 17 pages in a night. I know it's not going to work for everyone, but worth giving it a try.

Was it not Steve Allen who said that comedy was tragedy plus time? I think Alfred Hitchcock, though I can't find the quote, said that horror was comedy slowed down. So the idea has been around a while. in truth, though, comedy is not horror, it is the unexpected in a silly situation or manner. Take for instance Monty Python's silly walks, there is nothing horrific about them, just unexpected movements done in a silly manner. The world is odd, sometimes, in Hollywood and art, they seem to desire to build a mythos that is not true, as if their theories and lies will make something greater than it is, but in truth, art when done for good reasons, to please one's self or others, usually others, really does become something greater than itself does it not?

I completely agree. Just because something has a similar basis as something else doesn't make it boring. My favorite Goosebumps book is number 9 I think it is, the ghost next door… 9 could have been let's get invisible. I forget. In any case, I do remember the story, and while I see very similar elements in all of the other books, there are still some books that are infinitely better then some of the other books in the Goosebumps series alone. Nightmare a fever swamp was great. Shocker on shock street wasn't all that good. And honestly common now that I am 20 years older than when I read all those books, I would probably not like any of them because they're just below my level of reading comprehension. But I can still breathe I appreciate the effort that he puts into them. And I still like the characters and I think the characters are part of what makes all of his books amusing.

I grew up reading R.L. Stine's Goosebumps series - at least what was available in my school libraries. Love most of his books. I hate the dummies and gnomes books because those things creep me out - they still do. His other books don't scare me at all. They are interesting and fast-paced!

Goosebumps are the first books I remember reading as a kid. Welcome to Dead House came out when I was 8 years old, so I probably read other books before that, but I don't really remember. I do have a copy of Bambi from the first grade sitting in my bookshelf.

I liked In the Name of Death for a title. I know you don't like it so maybe do a variation like The Name Collector or Death comes with a Name. Something like that. I didn't get into the RL Stine books, but my youngest brother did. I'm glad he's still writing

Wait, two weeks? So technically one could write two Goosebumps novels in one NaNo?? #goals

I don’t think having books following a formula is a terrible thing. A lot of the books I read are like guy and girl meet, there’s some sort of conflict, oh no they catch feelings, deny feelings, sexy times ensue, huge fight and/or some sort of drama drive them apart, and near the end they get back together and live happily ever after. Doesn’t mean I enjoy it any less, yeah it’s repetitive but the books sell, that’s why a lot of people follow the same layout

I've never read R L Stine but popping onto Amazon I've taken a look at the number of pages and it looks like he writes novellas. I would imagine, as I haven't seen inside the books, that the font is slightly larger and the spacing is generous to increase the page count. Please let me know if that's close.

I've come across a lot of books that have the same title as 3 other authors and even several movies. Only difference between them, IF any, is the content. For me "Frozen" is a horror movie where 3 people get stranded on a ski lift and surrounded by wolves.

Writing a book in two weeks would be a dream. I wrote my 97,000 word zero draft in just over 2 months, and hope to someday write that much in 2 weeks. Actually, that would be painful. I just did the math and that comes to an average of 7000 words/day without a break. That could be an interesting experiment to do, though... Good luck with NaNoWriMo tomorrow!! Ahhh!! It's tomorrow!!! Where did time go...

All I can think during this video is its not even written yet but I’m already so hyped for Project Death!!! 💀 also am I the only one who actually just really likes “Project Death” as a title? Yeah probably. 💩 I guess it’s maybe not super relative to what the plot sounds like it is, but still, for some reason I really like it ☠️

It wasn’t his “Goosebumps” series that got me into writing and reading. I was an adult by the time that series came along. However, his “Fear Street” series was pivotal for me.

I was never into Goosebumps because I don't like horror. I tried to read them but the scared me to much as a child. I have his biography and it was so inspiring and I look up to him despite never getting into the books.

Hi yes, titles are the hardest, I too have a long list of UGH!!! bad titles. I still haven't found the "ONE "yet... I get so inspired by all your videos, love the pupirone too..lol thanks for all your time working out these Authors writing routines, I find them really cool and take a few ideas here and there to make it my own. Happy Writing NaNo this year.
