I've recently taken a strong interest in the horror game Iron Lung and decided to make a game that takes some inspiration from it: set in a submarine, deep in an ocean, with terrifying creatures watching your every move. This is a devlog outlining the first steps I took. Hope you enjoy.

I really love this idea, and I feel like the "looking for things deep in the ocean that were seen by one guy and never seen again" thing is great. However, I feel like the atmosphere of the bit when the bathysphere rose out of the water looked a little too perfect? If that makes sense? You might consider making the lighting engine look older to help recreate the feel of Iron Lung. That said, this is obviously very unfinished, and I'm sure that you'll figure out what you think is best for the game. Can't wait to see more progress.

Thank you very much! Yes I'm thinking of majorly overhauling (or underhauling) how the lighting works to achieve a more old school look, perhaps by baking it. It'll also be set at night to drive the fear home.

I honestly still cannot believe that i helped in making the most popular video on your channel, it just feels so unreal.. Anyways i'm really excited to see more of the Bathysphere game! I really feel like it has some potential if done right. Also that black and white fish is going to be in my nightmares tonight.

taking a page out of subnaughticas game design and atmosphere i bet you could create a very creepy experience!! i love the inspiration and just the little ballsack tooling diver you made looks awesome already!

This reminds me of a video I saw a few days ago from the channel curious archive it was titled “why the deep sea scares us” or something similar, anyway the video is actually why I discovered your amazing channel because it goes over iron lung and the man who went into the bathysphere in the 1930s and when he went down into the deep he was in a heavily altered state of mind due to getting concussed from the bumpy way down and because of that some of the creatures he saw he was unable to comprehend like the fish with the 5 lines you show in the video is actually a comb jellyfish in real life and I feel like it would be cool for you to something similar. You could make it so late into the game when scary shit starts messing with the character something could ram into bathysphere making the character slam his head and get severely concussed in the vastness of the cold dark deep

as soon as you mentioned Beebe i got so excited! this looks so cool, the claustrophobia clashing with the thalassophobia of the environment outside is such a great contrast in particular with the bathysphere!! the idea of a game where the once-sighted sea creatures you hear accounts of, or see drawings of, are Real -- and you have to find them -- is so compelling of a pitch to me. that could lead so many players down a really fascinating rabbithole and generate more interest in marine biology and mythology. i LOOOOOVE that idea and i am really intrigued to see more about this game O-: if you're looking for ideas from viewers i might have a couple: - i'm wondering, do you have any plans on adding visual grain/filters similar to iron lung and other retro-style horror games? I think it'd really fit the low poly style and add to the ambience, especially underwater... - if you wanted to fan out more and include other creatures not just seen by Beebe, there's also stuff like the "Bloop". and maybe more grounded and horrific takes on sea serpents and monsters such as the Kraken and Charybdis would be cool... sooo stoked to see where this goes!!!

I love your enthusiasm, it's very motivating haha Yeah I would live viewer suggestions, and I am planning on retrofying (?) the look of the game with visual defects and the such. Someone also suggested bloop but I'm not sure what that is, is that the fish from Iron Lung? And yeah the Kraken addition sounds like a great idea.

This looks like it's got legs. When you mentioned jotting down research I immediately thought of Return of the Obra Dinn and how you need to fill out the ledger in that to progress the game. Probably wouldn't work 1:1 with what youre describing but food for thought! I'm guessing soundtrack would be minimal to non-existant to keep with the ambiance, but if you want an amatuer composer to put you something together let me know.

Thank you! Yeah I thought of Return of the Obra Dinn as well and I had that game in mind while figuring out the main gameplay loop cuz there are similarities. And yes the soundtrack will be very minimalistic and I'll mostly rely on ambient sounds to drive the tension/atmosphere. Thanks for the offer btw! I'll comment again once I decide :)

I’m making a game based half on iron lung and half on a nightmare I had that’s set on a deep ocean crabbing/fishing boat in a big storm. Do you have any tips on making that weathered ship look or having the water crash onto the side?
