That would help, in normal years. But, please bear in mind that the total average precipitation for Tucson is just over 13 inches a year. (I couldn't get good info for Benson.) In 2020, they got just 4.2 inches. Very hard to sustain any garden on that runoff, not to mention the record breaking heat. Another thing to bear in mind is just how hard the soil can be, especially if they have caliche. Digging the lowered beds might not be feasible... (There is a reason that there aren't many basements in AZ.)

@@melissajarvis4829 I did it for 10+ years in Las Vegas. (I was always so jealous of how much water you all got in AZ.) There's lots of other water farming tricks and techniques you can apply too; ollas, wicking beds, choosing desert variety perennial edibles, and medicinals, planting heavily in the fall/winter/spring, utilizing the north side of your home and trees, I already mentioned heavy mulching above. Farm the water first, you'll find a way.

@@manorton6709 Yes. Those things all help. I do want to point out that 2020 saw brutal, record breaking heat in AZ, not just drought. (They weren't exaggerating.) I'm not sure why they didn't do more of a fall/winter garden this year. Probably because their focus right now is still on animal infrastructure? But, you're right, with a little more planning, funds, and effort, they can work on adding some of what you mentioned in, as well. (Ex: add gutters on the pig palace that drain into a rain barrel. I'm not sure if they are already using their grey water, but that would be a good start, too, if not.) Also, in case you didn't know, they have experimented with more native crops. In 2019? they grew amaranth. I think they may have mentioned Native Seed. (If not, someone in their comments may have told me.) It is an organization based in Tucson that makes seeds available for sale that are either native or more adapted to the Southwest. Yes, I know I'm water spoiled, comparative to some places. I'm in Phoenix, on a flood irrigated lot... But, it's all relative. I watch a lot of other southern homesteaders in North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Arkansas (and Al in New Hampshire and a few others in the N East). Talk about water spoiled! Streams, springs and swamps! Almost daily rain... Yeah. Water envy! But, they get humidity, too. Yuk...

@@manorton6709 I have some questions: Do you have some recommended sources for more info on ollas? I researched ollas a couple of years ago, including some dyi ones, but they didn't really seem doable. And the real ones are so expensive. Do they work for larger plots? To me, they seemed expensive, but ideal for using with only individual plants with high water needs. By wicking bed, are you referring to an inground system? Or, raised bed or even container style? I've had several different commercial container ones, with varying successes.
