I made a hood/cowel by making a huge open -toed sock. The heel turn was my hood. The cuff was my cowel part. Then I turned the heel, and my face sticks through the open sole part of the sock. No gusset.

That's genius! I really wanted to make a hood this spring but couldn't find a pattern that I loved. Eventually I settled on one (Cucullus hood on ravelry) but have been modifying it slightly to make what I originally envisioned. It's almost done now so time will tell how I like the final product but I will definitely keep this approach in mind if I want to make a second!

I totally understand the whole knitwear designer thing! I do that both with knitting and sewing! Why buy a pattern if I can just DIY it?! When you head to Santa Fe, if you get a chance, drive down to Albuquerque and take a ride on the tram to Sandia Peak. It is one of the most amazing things!

Food for thought...for the hood, you can do a giant short row heel shape, this would remove the pointy finish.

Hood…..once you finish the height of your cowl, work back and forth to make a square that you could seam up the center.

The cognitive hump gets us all. 😂 I wouldn't add additional increases to counter the more fitted crewneck - it's a relatively minor change from the pattern, and because it's pure rambouillet and a yoke motif with a generous length, you'll be able to block the colorwork section to the intended size without it seeming "too short" and without needing to improvise for width. But you can always steam the colorwork once you finish to get a better idea of how the yarn will relax. 😉

I would definitely add a 3rd color. I think what you have is a gorgeous colorway, but adding one small accent color would really help it pop and add a level of contrast to help keep the pattern clear

I can see your vision for the hood in my mind’s eye! All you need to do is decide if you want an invisible join for the top seam, or something more decorative. You could divide the stitches and use the Kitchener join or use a three needle bind off.

I make a cowl that just extends to 11-13 inches long. It pulls up for a hood and scrunches up around your neck when not using it as a hood. No shaping required. 😊

A free pattern with a great hood is Spring League Sleeveless Hoodie by two of Wands. You can also purchase the pattern. I made this in the suggested yarn and really love it. 😊

I also used Norman (Nimble Needles) German short row heel tut when first learning to knit socks. I find that GSR heels are best fit for my feet & pretty simple. The colorwork sweater is coming out nicely!

For the cowl. Maybe try making it as if it is a giant short row heel. Then finishing it off. No point at the back and a familiar technique with a clean design. Just a suggestion to consider

Hi. I’ve been looking on Ravelry for a hood/cowl pattern to replicate your San Francisco purchase and have been unsuccessful in finding anything. I’ll keep looking too but the only thing I’ve found is either a cowl (tube) or a convoluted hood. I hope we can find a pattern or come up with an appropriate pattern. Keep us posted. I’m knitting in slow motion too. I think it’s the weather. 🎉😊

For your hooded cowl I would use short rows for a bit and then continue it in the round, thereby making it an L shape.

Hi Taylor Happy to watch you this morning My hubby and I want to watch House of the Dragon but we had to watch Game of Thrones to understand it So we are into that right now !!! Ugh my Joann's had one single skein of kroy midnight orchid, I hope they get more, its so gorgeous! I've had some issues with some kroy colorways having inconsistent dye or spun weird even with the same dye lots, so I hesitate to pick any up unless I can see the yarn in person

Oh. My. Goodness. I heart this episode with my whole creative soul. It was a perfect example of the creative brain grappling with making - the overthinking, the rethinking, giving in, enjoying the process, deciding to go your own way but grappling with that or an easier path. I knit a pair of socks in the same color way as your “socks for September.” They are one of my go-to pairs to wear when my toes are cold at night in winter. The thickness of Paton’s Kroy makes them my warmest pair.

Love the grey and yellow sweater and the blue tee! For wavy/loose curls, I have used Ouidad Advanced Climate Control stronger hold gel (red label) for years. A friend mentioned that I should try curl cream as well, so I recently added in the Ouidad Curl Shaper Plumping and Defining cream. It has been a game-changer for me, but I know all curls are different, lol! My hair product game is about as expensive as my knitting and reading game 😂Have a good week!

Hi Julie, I have curly hair and was wondering if you find that the Ouidad gel or defining cream dry out your hair. I am always happy to explore new products. My hair is thick as well and of course on the dry side so always a little cautious when trying something new. I know about the expense in hair products. lol Any tips you have are welcome.

@@michellepissk-schupak5440 , I'm sure you know curly hair is a journey lol. I suspect that using just the gel was drying it out (this is a casting gel). Adding the curl cream before the gel has helped immensely. I tried a Cantu curl cream before the Ouidad, and it was too heavy for me. My local Ulta sells a travel size of the gel, that is great for trying it. I had to order the cream from Ouidad, but I also don't live in a large city. Hope this helps!

I too have curly hair and have been using As I Am coconut cowash, leave-in conditioner and the moisture milk for scrunching out the crunch and All About Curls high definition gel. For wash out conditioners I like Tresemme Expert Botanique Nourish & Replenish or Giovanni 50-50 Balanced Hydrating Calming conditioner. I should try adding curl cream before applying gel and see how that goes.

Consider a sock heel as an analog for your hood. That straight up part you plan to knit is like the heel flap. Then you can work short rows like you would for a heel to finish it. You can consult a sock knitting book for the formulas and shapes (more round vs more square) and voila! No point!

the idea of going back and forth like a long collar will work beautifully for a hood, it is easy to do and you have the right idea, it will be a long collar to go up and over your head, but you can just keep measuring or use the original one you bought for the size. Best of luck. Beautiful Penasa

This is a great update and your projects look wonderful! When you started that hooded cowl, it was because you had worn something similar on your vacation and wanted to make one. I think you gave reasons in that video for why you didn't want to use a pattern. Maybe those reasons aren't relevant anymore but if you're really curious, I know you already talked about it :) Good luck!

LOVE your knitting videos, I watch all of them. (also your books RU-vid, so great!) Thank you for being realistic about knitting. I also get into moods when I am not sure what to make next, have too many WIPs, feel overwhelmed with projects, etc. You always have a realistic and down to Earth way of enjoying your craft but also realizing that time is limited and sometimes you just have less time for creative projects. Thank you so much. Makes me feel "normal" when I get a little lack in my knitting.

You should look at how baby bonnets are made, where after you knit the sides, then you knit a long tab from the back stitches to the forehead and sew the side stitches onto its sides. No pointed elf hat look.

For the hood, I recommend making a flap (I hate that word, 😂) at the top of the half tube and then connect the top sides of the half tube to that. That will stop the pointy bit. I knit a hood for being cozy when travelling on planes and the flap part helped and worked well.

I Tunisian crocheted a cowl. I did one big panel that wrapped around the back and sealed it at the top, then made a second panel for the neck part and attached it. I can recommend the seam at the top if you want the "assassin hiding in the shadows" vibe. That's what I wanted. 😅 Thread and Yarn (here on RU-vid) did a folk hood recently. She has a tutorial. That might be of help for your construction decisions.

In regards to your hood, just make the tube larger in diameter. You can knit it to a certain length and use it as a cowl or a hood 😃. I’ve knitted one of these and it’s great in winter weather.

1) Glad you have an eye on the crew neck’s effect on the increases needed. 👌 2) I know you like mustardy yellows and oranges, but that bright blue tee just makes your complexion glow! 3) My normal modus operandi is to have several projects that I cycle through so that I don’t get bored. And like a maniac, I signed up for Steven West’s Surprise Sock-along. Nope, not boring! 🤣 I can recommend it for adventurous beginners. 👍

For your hood, you could cast off a third of your remaining stitches across the back and continue knitting the side and joining it a stitch at a time to the back cast-off stitches until you're in the middle of the head. Then move to the other side, doing the same join to the cast-off back stitches. Then Kind of like sleeves that come onto the top of your shoulders and get joined down the center.

Taylor, your hood! Ok, stand in front of a mirror and use a washable marker to mark the widest part of your face on the glass, I'm guessing those cheekbones! Just a little jealous, lol. Measure between the marks to get your inches. Using your gauge on your cowl, cast-off that measurement. So if your cheeks are 6 inches apart, cast-off 6 inches worth of stitches. Knit back and forth till you get the height from your shoulders to the top of your head plus 1 inch. Use a three needle bind off to bind off all your stitches at the top of your head, where you hair parts! If you want, you can pick up and knit a nice edge around your "face" opening. Ribbing is pretty, but if you're ambitious, you could knit a stockinette section and create a tube for a draw-string.... you can do it! It's so easy!

thought on adding hood, overlap the hood by picking up stitches under the overlap (ie 15-20 stitches each side of front centre-line)' I have a knit tank that I've been meaning to add hood too and was thinking to do this way.

I just finished the Rento Hoodie by Lea Petäjä and the hood on that is constructed almost exactly as you're describing without the casting off of stitches. I love the fit of the hood and the pattern is free, so should give you an idea of the construction. I will say it isn't the best written pattern, but I do believe the hood is as you were describing.

Also, Tayler, remember you are working in a spiral as well as increasing. It is really impossible to get a perfect line up unless you fudge it somewhat. And no one is going to see something that minute.

Check out Steven West's Woolly Waffle Balaclava for construction ideas for your hood. I have made two of these and I really like how the back is rounded, not pointy. This pattern is much snugger pattern, but I bet you can modify to the looseness that you are looking for. Good luck!

Once your hood is tall enough, could you do some K2tog in the center, then fold and Kitchener the rest of the stitches together? I was thinking the K2tog (maybe 3 of them?) would help avoid it being too pointy.

Hi Taylor! I love the colours you chose for your new sweater! I just wanted to correct your pronounciation of "fleur-de-lys": you have to pronounce the "s" at the end. Keep the way you pronounce the "e" sound in "lys", but add the "s" sound at the end. Keep up the good work, I LOOOVE your channel!

Tayor, it looks like there is a line on your blue tee, about 1 1/2/ inches from the bottom. Probably just something caused by lights, but I did take out a black sweater from Wips and saw a definite darker line, but that was about 10 years old. So it went to goodwill with the rest of my black yarn-hopefully someone liked it.

Yeah! I actually noticed that as well in the video! It’s REALLY hard to see in person though which is strange. I’m going to take it outside and see if it is more noticeable. All of the dye lots are the same so that’s a bit odd. Usually variations within dye lots aren’t that noticeable. 🤔🤔

Your videos show what we as makers feel at different times. Slow hobbies take time and things change. Have you considered short rows for the hood? That would eliminate the pointy part if you sew it together, kind of a big heel turn. Enjoy your podcasts, even if knitting isn't the whole of it. Life happens and we have to roll with the flow.

Ok, first of all, thank you! Second of all…wait for it…Walmart. I got this t-shirt dress at Walmart. ☺️ We were getting stuff for 4th of July and I saw it hanging there and was like, YUP. You’re mine. It’s all cotton too which I love and I’ve washed it a few times now and it hasn’t shrunk. ❤️❤️
