So something for everyone eh? Recently I read the book of Jonah because I’m reading Moby Dick. Just revelled in it. Job was also recommended but haven’t got to that yet. I love the history of it all but really such a bloodcurdling vicious lot. Years ago as a result of reading an article about the archaeology of the Bible lands I was recommended to read a book called Walking the Bible five Books of Moses by Bruce Feiler. I am now searching my shelves for it. It was great. Thank you again Ben, always entertaining and lots of fun.

Incredibly interesting as I am currently reading the Greek and Roman myths. Just finished the war about Helen and then the stories of Argos. You are right how much the stories are similar. Thanks for reading this for us

Alas as someone who grew up w the niv bible for school, and as much as I want to read everything you do, to quote padme, you’re going down a path i cannot follow 😅 but i remain a steadfast viewer 🫶🏻 hope you’re having loads of london fun! ❤

Aw thank you. And trust me, I wouldn't expect someone to follow any literary path I tread but I always appreciate padme quotes and hairdos for the journey 😄

I’ve always wanted to read the Bible in its entirety. I grew up in church where grandfather was the Pastor. I miss it sometimes, but I’ve never been able to find a church as good as his. The book of Ruth and The book of Esther were always my favorites.

Well done! Quite a lot to get through. Looking forward to your thoughts on Job. Perhaps certain passages are more troublesome because you know there are millions using the text as a (sometimes literal) life guide. Homer doesn't get that devotion.

Yes possibly. I'm interested to hear people's different explanations of all the grisly stuff in there - should also be said there is plenty of nice stuff too ha

Job is a literal life guide and if more people read it, especially Christians who claim they believe in it, here wouldn't be so many people suffering from hearing voices thinking secular medicine will fix it which it can't and doesn't... It is in fact a life guide. I am bothered when people mock this. You will know fully if you ever experience anything that Job went through.

Your comment suggests that you do not understand that the more troublesome parts are cautionary tales. Those parts are not a how-to guide. Each book needs proper exegesis.

The thing is.....Israel rejected God as their leader in that they wanted a king to rule them and be like other nations....that's where they went wrong also when they wanted the law instead of God 's day by day guidance

Apart of your western core reading will you periodically read the foundational text, like Socrates/plato, nietszche, etc? I’d even argue someone like Georges Bataille as important not only for his transgressive philosophy but was the progenitor of deconstructionism

I'll probs be getting to plato at some point yeah. I've read story of the eye before which was... interesting haha

Reading the Bible as literature, do you find the disjointedness of it difficult or do you treat it more as a collection/anthology of short stories? Given also that it's written by different authors.

For the time being I've found it reasonably OK to follow as the first 17 books are more or less in chronological order. Now that I've started the poetry books and prophecy books which are a bit more all over the place I'll have to see if I need more help

Very cool that you're reading...in spite of your "baggage". :) The most mind-blowing lens is what Jesus said in Luke 24:27...all Scripture points to Him. Jesus is our "David" against Goliath (sin). Jesus is Boaz (our kinsmen Redeemer who benevolently takes in the alien). Even in Ezra when the people weep at the laying of the temple's foundation after the return from the exile, the people weep because they remember the glory of the original temple. That's a hint of the unexpected humility of Christ (remember he compares himself to the temple later when he says "Tear this temple down and I'll rebuild it in 3 days,")--anyway, the Israelites were expecting a world-conqueror and then things take an unexpected turn when Christ teaches about sin and then ultimately dies. I hope above all that as you read you perceive God's love for you, specifically, and the lengths he went to save us from sin. None of us can find peace with God, in ourselves, because he is holy and we are sinful. But he satisfied the debt himself and, through Christ, we are free.

This is all great but I believe that no youtube comment ever written converted anyone or even changed anyone’s mind about God.

Very interesting video. However you choose to read the Bible, here are my strong recommendations: 1). Do not listen to what Brandon says about it. Literalism has never in history been seen as the right way to approach the Bible. 2). Do not try to be “objective” about it, because it’s simply not possible. Lay out there what you stand or not stand for. No one will get hurt, and the conversation will become richer.
