lol...I always got a kick out of this scene...the first time I watched it I was probably about 18 years old and I never understood why a man with shackles on his ankles with a 30 second head start required "get the dogs"...I would have run him down on foot in about 45 seconds.

Those are middle aged men on the chain gang vs a very well conditioned and determined escapee. If you use a string to raise the chain on the ankles you can run quite fast.

@Edith...I don't know where it was filed, perhaps emeryabyblues is correct that it was in cali, but there certainly are parts of southern Louisiana that look just like that vista....flat acres of golden grass farmlands...if you travel through on I-10 you go right through it.
@@rup54 I’ve said that for years; the only part of Florida that even remotely resembles this is that area between Jacksonville and Orlando. 99% of the state is almost completely flat, but you see a lot of small hills in this. Most movies back then rarely filmed on location of the setting. I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang was set supposedly in Georgia, but all of the area was obviously in and around Los Angeles.

Boss Keen was a nice boss to Luke; Until Luke, pissed off boss keen and Got Boss Keen angry. Then Boss Keen wasn't nice any more after giving Luke every chance possible and same with many other bosses and the captain of the road gang.
Right, I remember when he had an angry look on his face and threw down the shovel for Luke to dig the hole and when Luke was beaten and tired, he chastised him for using the Lord’s name in vain.

In the old days of the chain gang you had two choices, work out or die out! Before the World War II era, most people sentenced to the chain gang died as a result of overwork, malnutrition, filth, and disease. I Am a Fugitive From a Chain Gang changed a lot of that. They were reformed and made more lenient providing better food accommodations. I have a much better idea. Caning like they do in Singapore. But no prison time except for men over 50 or those sentenced to death. Keep the accused in jail or remand until their trial. When the verdict is read, send them to a place where caning is performed. Give them 1-20 strokes depending on the crime, put them in a recovery hospital just long enough to recover with no painkillers provided, just keep the wounds clean. Then release them. Problem solved.
@@jondstewart I think I read something somewhere several years back that an American kid in Singapore got caned for chewing gum in public. Wondered if that was really true.
