This is my favorite violinist playing my favorite violin concerto. Hilary Hahn makes even the most complicated music sound clean and transparent. And the Sibelius concerto... such a sublime opening, with all that passion simmering under a calm surface where you know it's there but it only comes out slowly. The second movement is incredibly beautiful, and the third movement is fun. Sibelius's violin concerto is the most recently composed of the "big six" standard repertoire violin concertos that are performed more often than any . The others, in chronological order: Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Bruch No. 1, Brahms, Tchaikovsky. At 19:06 of your video: crossing four strings back and forth like that is a fairly common technique in the violin concerto repertoire. Her left hand isn't moving much, because she's basically playing broken chords. The basic string-crossing technique isn't that hard, but what's really hard is keeping it so perfectly even while playing spiccato (bow bouncing off the string) at that tempo. The bow naturally bounces, but it takes really good touch to keep it bouncing at just the right height to drop back to the next string in rhythm, especially when playing on four strings with different thicknesses and tensions. Sibelius knew the violin extremely well; it was his own primary instrument. He was unable to make a career out of playing the violin because he suffered a fractured right elbow in an accident as a teenager, but he continued playing violin as an amateur for most of his life and his understanding of violin technique really showed when he turned to composing.

Awesome! This is my favourite violin concerto. I recommend checking out all the other famous violin concertos from Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn, Tchaikovsky, Dvôrak and Bruch’s 1st. I already recommended Mendelssohn’s violin concerto played by Ray Chen under the Hebrides overture video so it’s probably on the list already👍

Letsssaagoo! ..such an iconic work for the violin…one of the first pieces that introduced me to classical music….back when I had zero attention span….and wouldn’t even give slow movements a chance…so I started with the third movement of this, and was instantly hooked,…only later did I actually came back to be amazed at the whole work…Keep it up!

The ending of this movement is one of the best things Sibelius ever composed. From the same composer, I would recommend his great and quite famous Symphony No. 5´s third movement (the last one). And obviously, you have to keep listening to this concerto !

Ahah bro, i have so many anecdote for this. I played the Sibelius Concerto, worked on it like 2 years, it's still one of my favorite, with Brahms. The Orchestra is Philharmonique de Radio France, sometime i play with that orchestra and my teacher was the violonist just behing Hilary ahah. If you look for great violonist, you should check Leonidas Kavokos, i play with him in Tchaikovsky with Orchestre National de France, that was epic man. I played with Augustin Hadelich too, and he is really good, incredible violonist. We also make recording with Simone Lamsma, the Sibelius Concerto, and it's still one of my favorite "moderne" version of this concerto. She's brillante.

I adore this. I feel second-hand power watching Hilary Hahn absolutely nail the hardest sections then have the orchestra violinists play behind her as though they are in a cult and she is the leader. (I mean this in the best way possible!)

I learnt a lot about violin techniques and technicalities from watching Twoset. It made me appreciate it more when I could understand what was happening and how sounds were created- like the difference between playing near the bridge or near the fingerboard, the way the bow is drawn over the strings, what vibrato does, how many strings are played at once. Im still overawed by how certain compositions sound like 2 violins playing 2 different parts, at the same time, all because of clever bowing and fingerings. I enjoy listening to violins so much more now.

Violin concertos are kind of my guilty pleasure. Especially ones played by Hilary. This one is right up at the top of the list of beautiful violin concertos. The 2nd mvt is absolutely gorgeous, and the 3rd is quite the celebration to wrap it up. Cool things about Hilary Hahn, besides her wonderful playing: She has Guinea Pigs. She likes crafts and things made by crafters- like all her earrings. She knits. She has 2 small children. She takes a year off from performing every decade to renew her spirit, think about other things,reset and refresh her practice. She has her 100 Daysof Practice every year where she posts daily how and why she is practicing, her thoughts, trials, triumphs, what shes thinking, how its feeling etc, and she invites and inspires others to join her in this excercize…. I admire asa person and musician so much.

Once you start diving into the modern classical world, (which may be dangerous territory!) I would suggest Einojuhani Rautavaara's piano concerto 1. He is also a finnish composer. It feels really massive, but also has a lot of dissonance which can sound weird if listened too early, but I still reccomend it like after scriabin and such. Edit: Modern music is all about how you approach it. If you can keep an open mind you will start to find some of the most amazing music you've ever heard. Also good modernish pieces are Scriabin's poem of extacy and Arvo Pärt's fratres. Both very listenable still as they aren't too dissonant or atonal. The poem of extacy could be listened to after his 5th sonata.

@@sashakindel3600 I second this recommendation. The viola concerto is the piece that first made Walton famous, and it's considered by many to be his greatest masterpiece. It's also the most popular of all viola concertos. In fact, one of the main reasons I play the viola is that the Walton viola concerto was one of the first pieces of classical music I ever heard. It was on the program at the first classical concert I attended.

@sashakindel3600

22:48 On a piano, you have to be able to keep track of much thicker textures; more notes and lines at the same time. The need to play different lines at different volumes to clarify the texture is commonplace challenge in piano scoring, but doesn't really apply to violin. On the other hand, the piano's hammer mechanism takes care of most aspects of tone production for you, whereas on violin, you control the bow speed, pressure, distance from the bridge and angle all manually. There is also the fact that on a violin, you have access to a continuum of pitch, where a piano only has a discreet set of pitches; this allows the use of vibrato, whose speed and amplitude are more parameters you have to take responsibility for, and it means that in order to be in tune, you have to put your fingers in *exactly* the right places, not just close enough to hit the right keys.
