We've rediscovered pieces surprisingly often, even from famous composers. This isn't even the first Mozart piece rediscovered in the 21st century, though it's the longest one to be rediscovered in a long time. As far as I know, all the other 21st-century Mozart rediscoveries are short piano pieces. Even some large-scale works from well-known composers have gone missing. Dvorak's 1st Symphony was not performed until almost 20 years after his death. He submitted the manuscript score to a competition (he was not yet famous at the time), it was misplaced and never returned to him, and it turned up many years later in a secondhand bookstore in Leipzig. I've had the privilege of performing a recently rediscovered piece that had not yet been published at the time. There's a certain excitement and sense of responsibility in it, because you know that even the most seasoned classical listeners in the audience are getting their first impression of the piece from your performance. In February 2019 I was in the orchestra for the fourth-ever performance of Florence Price's Violin Concerto No. 2. It was one of her last works and disappeared after her sudden death in 1953, and was found in an abandoned house along with some of her other unpublished scores in 2009. We played off preprint parts because publication was still in progress; the first published edition wasn't released until later that year.
