Primus is an acquired taste. Their songs are almost completely character driven so their sound/style varies greatly. If you hear Wynona's Big Brown Beaver after listening to this you may not even realize its the same band. A good follow up to this would be Tommy The Cat (your name sake), live at from Bonaroo. If nothing else it will give you appreciation for their musicianship and stage presence.

This is how Primus starts. You are weirded out and don't think you like it. But keep listening and you'll see.

I love this song so much. I totally understand why you wouldn't like it. Hell, I didn't like Primus when I first heard them years ago but they ended up being one of my favorite bands of all time. Amazing live band as well. A great song to check out would be "Tommy the Cat." My personal favorite version is off the album "Suck On This!". Les Claypool is one of the best and indeed most unique bass players in the world. There is no other band like Primus. Fans would often lovingly and playfully yell "Primus Sucks!" at shows and what-not. Les Claypool back in the day would often introduce the band that way: "Hey. We're Primus and we suck!" And then commence to rock the shit out of you. Cheers. \,,/

That noise you were asking about is a dead note, bass string being muted with the fretting hand while it is slapped so you get a thump instead of a bass note. Les Claypool uses them a lot in his music, great bassist.

Primus is really weird, but I'd put Les Claypool as the greatest bass player of all time. He was my inspiration for picking up bass in high school.
@adamwalcott_official
@adamwalcott_official Год назад
I thought that Les was the best ever 25 years ago when I was in high school too. Then I learned what real virtuosity looked like. I still love Les, but he's far from the best bass player ever. Even Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne and Soften the Glare is arguably better, but the best players are #1: Jaco, hands down, #2: Victor Wooten, #3 probably Stanley Clarke. As far as players from this century go, Hadrien Feraud and Henrik Linder are probably my favorites. There are so many other ridiculously good 6 string bassists out there now it's actually absurd.

@@adamwalcott_official Primus is my favorite band, Jaco is my favorite bass player
@adamwalcott_official
@adamwalcott_official Год назад
@sacramento60 I can't really argue with that. I think Gary Willis is my favorite player of all time. He's really the guy that's stepped into Jaco's shoes when it comes to innovative fretless bass. I still love Primus, the show they did with Danny Carey, Justin Chancellor, and Troy Van Leeuwen a couple weeks back was the best show I've seen since "Alive from Pachyderm Station." Edit: almost forgot to mention Michael Manring, another absolutely incredible fretless and fretted bassist.

The first time I ever heard them was when they opened for Rush at the Omni in Atlanta WAY back in the 90's. I agree that they are an acquired taste that I didn't get first off. However, they grew on me like so many other bands.

They are a 3 piece. drums, guitar, and bass/vocals. They are def unique and not for everyone. Les Claypool, however, is one of the best bassists on the planet. Tommy The Cat, Jerry Was A Race Car Driver, none of their music is "normal". Mr. Krinkle and John The Fisherman are two of my favorites.

Great honest reaction. It is okay that you didn't get Primus the first time around and they are definitely not for everyone. Maybe they are not for you However, you really should listen to more of their songs and I think maybe you need to see a live performance so you can really see the crazy amount of musicianship and skill these guys have. Personally I think this is an awesome song and Primus is amazing but I don't think it would have been my suggestion as a first listen of the band. Les Claypool the bass player and lead singer is amazing. He is widely considered one of the greatest bass players in the world. Primus are in their own genre. They don't sound like any other band. If you decide to check them out again please try to keep a few things in mind. First they have a strange sense of humor and second although they don't take themselves seriously they are seriously talented musicians. Third if you watch one of their music videos you have to keep their strange sense of humor in mind and realize that there will portions of the videos that will probably make you uncomfortable which is intended. I really think seeing what they are doing in addition to just hearing it will help. I think that you will see and hear the musicianship but it may still not be your cup of tea. Please check out the live version of "Tommy the cat" link below. 1) Primus - "Tommy The Cat" - Bonnaroo 2011 (Official Video) | Bonnaroo365 m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hMsJlJdWof8.html&pp=ygULUHJpbXVzIGxpdmU%3D

"Is there anything else I should listen to from this band?" If you ever get to a point where you "get" Primus, the answer to this question will be a resounding Yes. And then you will likely take that trip through all of Les Claypool's projects over the years. If you want a snapshot showcase of his bass-playing talents, check out Tommy the Cat from Bonnaroo 2011. If you don't "get" them after that, they're definitely not for you. Primus is an acquired taste, tbh.

I guess I will never understand why people don't like Primus. This song, and many others are pure bangers! Sure, they're quirky, but their musicianship shines with their ability to take, some would say "off putting sounds", and make them work. I've heard some say this is a musician's favorite type of band, but I'm not a musician and I've enjoyed their sound from the first time I heard them back in the late 80s early 90s. Maybe it was due to my enjoyment of the Dr Demento show in the 70s-80s and the wacky songs that would get played there.

Definately the wrong two songs to start off with for Primus. Trust me, give them one more chance and go with the most commercially successful song they have, which is Wynona's Big Brown Beaver. You then will have a good foundation for how good they can sound and from there you can start to appreciate just how incredible they are and move into experiencing the outer limits of what they can do with classics like Tommy the Cat, John the Fisherman, Jerry was a Racecar Driver, Mr. Krinkle, and a whole assortment of other truly unique, yet very infectious, works of theirs.

The Guitarist said he had to really work to find all the bad notes for this song it reflects the subject matter of the song really screwed up like Mud who went upside the head of the 6 foot 2 sumbich that was rude & stepped on his shoes. Primus are Brilliant musicans Les Claypool just may be the best Bassist on the planet I dare you to find another bassist that could play a Primus song by ear on the fly . Most guitarist wouldn't know how to begin to approach a Primus song, the Drummer is Uhmazin . Btw Primus have their own category on iTunes & other Platforms you buy music.

The percussive sound is the bass. Its natural not to get Primus on your first listen, most people have the same reaction.. as its not all nicely packaged and 4/4 like most other music, its in its own lane. In fact they have a Genre all to their own. What you experienced is confusion... as the musical skill involved in this is top level, and if you cannot hear that then you are only on the first run of the ladder musically and have a long way to go. 'Novelty' it is not.

Primus, for most, is an acquired taste. Not unlike Frank Zappa. To be fair, this isn't the best song to start with. I would've suggested that you start with Jerry Was a Racecar Driver, or Tommy the Cat. This is a good song, but not so much for an introduction. These guys are very heavily influenced by Rush and King Crimson.

You ask at 8:17 if it's just drum and bass. It's not, there absolutely is a rhythm guitar. There's even a guitar solo while the bass is doing his thing. Try Harold of the Rocks, or john the fisherman, they're a bit more melodic tunes from same band. This band is huge... for a reason.
