I viewed part of this months back Michael, it was a pleasure chatting with you and again, thanks for the suggestions, very melodic and accessible music. For the more obscure, I have been listening to Popol Vul and Amon Duul out of Germany circa early 70s ( Electronic experimental prog ). 🎵.
Congratulations Michael. This is very exciting. It’s been fun hanging with you this past year. See you again at some point once you’re settled. Be well 🎶🎵
Greetings from Colorado Springs! Best of luck to you with the USAF Academy Band! You'll love living here! Love your channel. Will continue to follow you as your life journey continues. Take care.
Congrats, Michael! 🇺🇸 You will crush basic training. I’m in Colorado Springs next summer if all goes well. Thank you for your commitment and future service.
Michael, congrats! Military music is a good life, often playing fine repertoire, etc. I'm happy for you! As you know, more and more conservatory trained musicians go the military route, because, well, jobs are there! The President's Own Band, just incredible. Sorry that we never got to meet up while you were in L.A. (I'm going down this weekend for record shopping.) All the best to you, and "see" you when you get back online.
Congratulations on such an amazing opportunity and honor. Best wishes to you. This is going to be such an incredible experience. Thank you for showing the Leonid Kogan record. I didn't know a good reissue on vinyl was out there. I placed my order. 😀 Take care and I look forward to your return.
Congratulations, though I’ll definitely miss your videos during the hiatus! Yours are by far my favorite videos in the VC for the genuinely useful insight, education and A+ recommendations. Also that Bernard Herrmann comp is excellent. Also also, question for ya - if you have one, what’s your favorite baroque recording on vinyl, both in terms of music quality and sound quality of the record?
Congratulations from Sweden , on your appointment. Hoping to see you here again, after you've been properly set up in Colorado Springs. Good luck with your new move & all.🎼🎶🎶🎶
Congratulations and good luck Michael! You will be missed (temporarily), you are a tremendous help adding to my classical LPs. Thanks and see you in 2024.
Hey Michael, congrats for your new and awesome career opportunity. Wish you all the best and I am looking forward to your future endeavors, especially for the absolute sound. Good luck with the training and your big move.
Congratulations Michael! I’ll miss your excellent reviews of classical music. I hope you come back in the future and share w/ us your passion for music. I wish you the best!
Thank you so much for your videos with such a assortment of different styles if music every one very informative and enjoyable best wishes for your future and stay safe and hope you still have time to listen to music 🎶
Congratulations, Michael! My son made great friends in basic training, and Texas in the fall won’t be too hot, I hope! Get excellent boots for basic is my advice!
We are really going to miss you, but it's all such an exciting life change. Some great stuff here. Excellent Testament pick-ups. I love all the Schuricht Bruckner. (BTW I got the Jochum EMI complete set - have yet to listen). Thanks for the shout-out on the Bernard Herrmann - as a wind player I imagine you appreciate his wonderful, wacky wind orchestrations. I adore the Gulliver' suite. Sensational sound. Cool pick-up on the New Order. I have that and a few of the other 12ins from that album, plus the original LP release. Their last truly great album IMO. See you on the other side.....
Holy cow! They put you through basic training for a seat in an orchestra?!? Perhaps you’ll get a pilot license out of that? Great to hear about the Absolute Sound, too! You deserve the probably wider and different audience you’ll get with that. Best luck in all your new endeavors!
I have that Mysterious Film World Of Bernard Herrmann on an original, possibly a 2nd press. I will.give it a spin ! So.. I pulled my Bernard Hermmann.. Its BH Conducts on London Phase 4 Stereo. Jane Eyre Citizen Kane 3 Worlds Of Gulliver..Comp. Still, a wonderful morning listen ! I will use your vids for refenence on good Japanese music across the board, Metal, Pop, folk.. All of it.
Michael that’s awesome congratulations I so happy for you that is big a full time musician 🥂 I’m going to miss your videos you always influence us and educate us on new and old music I appreciate that take care. Lovellandrew
Congratulations on this new chapter in your life. I do hope to see some more of your insightful vinyl reviews in the future. Nice find on that Kogan Beethoven. I have the Decca (SKL) Ketlebey Monastery Garden (lucky dollar bin find) which would be virtually identical to that London blue back version, a very pleasurable listen for a sunny afternoon.
Love how you mentioned the EMI sound suits Bruckner’s compositions. You’re alone in mentioning things like this and it speaks volumes of your audio as well as musical knowledge. Thx. PS: Hope life changes turn out great!
Congratulations Michael on a really exciting career development. Good luck for the next two months, I felt tired out just listening to what in store for you! I hope all your vinyl safely makes it to Colorado and that it doesn’t take you too long before your turntable is set up and spinning in its new home.
That is super impressive because the marine drum and bugle core actually have to go through marine basic training (the President’s Own Marine Band get to skip basic, because they judge marine basic training to be too harsh for the band players).
Michael, best wishes for you in your new endeavors. The audio-oriented side jobs sound really good for you. See you in your next video! Greetings from Italia.
Michael: best of luck…I did lots of USO gigs and most were pretty cool. After 29+years as a professional musician..what you are about to embark on will serve you well….all the best…see you in 24!,-JG
Michael wishing you the best on your future endeavor and thank you for your service. Really enjoy watching you on The Rachel Show and looking forward to see you upon your return.
You will be missed for sure, but I understand, dreams are important and if the chance come, you have to grab it, so big thanks for your time and hopefully we see you soon again and good luck with your upcoming missions in music. I did visit Atomic when I was in San Diego a few months ago, great store. Cheers and take care!
After seeing that Monastery Garden album around for years, I finally grabbed it a couple months ago. It's pretty corny music but it sure does sound fantastic. Bummed that you are leaving LA but super excited for you and your future!
Good luck, Michael - and take care. Hope to see you back here on your channel in a not to far future. It's always interesting and educating to watch your videos.
Congrats on your life choice. I’ll be interested to hear about your experiences upon your return, should you choose to share them. I have friends in the military and they are happy, but have interesting concerns. In any event, wishing you well! Proud to have you serve.
I have a lot of friends in various bands in the armed forces, knowing them and learning about what their careers have been like is what motivated me to consider this option. Not to mention the premier bands are incredibly high level musicians that are on par with any major full time American orchestra. Any job where I get to play with talented, driven musicians every day is a privilege.
Congratulations. It sounds like this is something you really wanted. All the best with the new endeavor and looking forward to hearing back from you in the future.
Hey Michael - a hearty congratulations to you on your choice to join the service and PLAY!! There aren't too many opportunities for an oboist to career it and the armed forces gives you such an opportunity. What could be better for one who wants to perform (as you know, not all musicians want to go that route)? So wonderful move. We know a young woman who played with my son in high school ensembles. She is a harpist and a very fine one. She went to Boston University for applied music and then joined Air Force (I think? There was about .5 orchestral harpists openings in the US after she graduated. You know the drill. ). She loves it - plays all the time, in many different contexts, and even found her soul mate - another professional musician in the AF. I will miss your presence and intelligent appraisals on the VC channels that you contribute to - and will particularly miss your take on the DG original source vinyl records as they are released. Good luck - rock on.
Very cool - congratulations! Just to clarify will you be a member of the overall band, the Concert Band, the Academy Winds, or all of the above? (PS - I believe it’s Kuh-TEL-bee.)
So the “Air Force Academy Band” is a unit that contains classical jazz and pop musicians. I’ll be performing with the Concert Band as well as the Academy Winds and the Rampart Winds.
Congratulations Michael! A question and a comment. Were you required to audition for your new oboe position? My comment is that the repetoire that you will be playing will likely be quite a bit different than that you played in Tucson. There is brilliant and really good music written and arranged specifically for symphonic band, quite challenging as well. By the way there are not enough good band recordings out there. All the best. Look forward to your reviews on The Absolute Sound.
US Military premier band auditions are carried out in an almost identical fashion to US orchestral auditions. Yes wind band repertoire is very different from orchestral repertoire, but most wind players are trained with a healthy dose of both.
This is a big loss for the community, who are going to be deprived of your incisive, and well delivered commentaries. I was actually waiting for your review of the recent releases from Deutsche Grammophon, more so the Hector Berlioz’s Symphony fantastic. I have bought the last batch in any case and will be waiting for your review, when it happens. Good luck in your career and wish you well.
I’ll be playing in the Air Force Academy Band. Both the Academy band and the DC Air Force Band are “premier bands” in the US military, which means they carry the same rank and status alongside other branches bands such as the West Point band, presidents own marine band, coast guard band, etc
Hi there, my email should be accessible through the "about" section on my page. However some very kind viewer has already done exactly as you wish to do and helped me fill this hole in my collection. Thank you though!
