This is how I interpret this song too. The words are so telling and an ode to his future of being full Vulcan. He never lets himself open up his human side again. Amazing performance
I went "old gods from WoW" mode. 2016 was the happiest year so far of my life, and my former crush dreams were destroyed that year, along many murican fanboys dreams.
Well, I believe later in life. He started to open up more. After going through all his experiences and maturing. Spock, became more human, too. Who in their right mind would smuggle themselves to Romulus? What kind of logical Vulcan would make such a decision? That is illogical. Even to support an underground political movement.
After his experience with V’Ger he absolutely opens himself to his humanity, but even if he hadn’t, Vulcan society may be founded on logic and emotional control but as Spock says in Star Trek VI, “Logic is the beginning of wisdom, not the end.” Also consider the words of T'Plana-Hath: Logic is the cement of our civilization with which we ascend from chaos using reason as our guide. Logic is the foundation and a sturdy foundation it is, but it’s meant to be built upon and overcome
Yeah, every time I rewatch it I see something I'd missed. One of the lines in the Klingon song cracks me up, "Gonna draw your last breaths, at the end of our bat'leths".
This was the best song of the episode in my opinion, albeit the saddest one, & lots of easter eggs, as Uhura was the only 1 present with Spock, calling back to TOS where it was Uhura singing & Spock listening & ironically the episode's name was Charlie X!
Same, it was my favorite, but you're so right about the parallels, I didn't even realize them until I saw this comment so good!!! I mean the name of that episode being Charlie X can't be a coincidence right?
@@joeylloyd1308 If U recall, in that TOS episode Charlie was totally infatuated with Yeoman Rand, but was heart broken when she rejected his advances for obvious reasons, because he couldn't understand his feelings & control his powers due to being an adolescent, truly a tragic figure ; there's nothing so sad as one going through rejection
And it was at that moment, that he fully embraced his Vulcan side and never show his human side ever again. Spock was just a heartbroken man that never got over Nurse Chapel.
@@FreakyTeeth That takes place a couple of years before this episode - Pike's already been to Talos IV, and in DSC Burnham has to take Spock there to confront something or other about that situation.
@@wargegeson8063 He's referring to the original, unsold pilot, "The Cage", whose footage was largely recycled into the TOS episode "The Menagerie" (which episode also gives the lie to Spock's claim, a few eps later, that there had never been a mutiny in Starfleet history, because that's exactly the charge he was defending himself against in "The Menagerie"). There's a shot of Spock smiling in delight at the windchime plants on Talos IV.
I love the clever double entendres on the words. Solving for X/I am the ex! and Figure out why?/Solve for Y. Clever combination of algebra and emotions. He misses patterns in both his relationships and the mission.
Heart breaking has always been horrible and the worst feeling, but for Spock it must be the worst feeling of his entire life he’s always been suppressing his human half, can’t imagine the heartbreak he must be feeling to go full Vulcan again
I just wish they'd make the characters behave a bit more like military professionals instead of tumblr/twitter's idea of cool. The Orville managed to turn down the cringe family guy comedy, I hope this does the same thing
This episode was so entertaining, and did a great job, as the best modern musicals do, of using the music to move the plot along and to reveal truths about the characters. I love that they took this chance.
"I'm thee X" truly a sad lament beautifully performed of unrequited Love; of a broken heart. "Subspace Rhapsody" was a great departure and entertaining showcasing the singing talents of primary cast in a musical Narrative of inner-retrospection.
Simply exceptional. How can we imagine such madness in a TV series. A thought for those who don't like Star Trek... In short, creating a space opera of such quality, choosing actors of such quality, such well-crafted scenarios (in each Star Trek franchise in fact). It’s impressive, pioneering, visionary.
This is beautiful listened back to back with "I'm Ready". Christine's exhilaration and Stock's heartbreak - it shows how baring your emotions isn't always a good thing.
Other hand, La'an's solo, "How Would That Feel", shows that hiding them isn't always the best thing either. "Keeping Secrets" is actually quite a good song about how hard it can be to find a middle path, but it's often disregarded in discussions of this episode partly because it's short and partly because some folks are easily distracted by the gimmick of Una turning off the gravity in her quarters so that she and La'an can do a little airborne dance.
I would say based on Pikes song with Batel that even though they are singing that what they say is not necessarily how they actually feel. So as harsh as Christine seemed to be with her song, it doesn’t mean that is how she feels. Also after reading the letter for the fellowship … the Dr said what will I do without you for 3 months. If that’s how long that fellowship is, she isn’t leaving for that long.
Nichelle NIchols had said that she and Leonard Nimoy played the rec-room scene in "Charlie X" as though the two characters had had a brief fling, followed by an amicable breakup.
THE second best Star Trek "family" episode after "City on the Edge of Forever"!! Incredibly perfect songs fitting the characters and still says their story with wonderful rhyming and snappy music. How the hell did you guys do it in a formulaic, science fiction drama?? You hit a home run and I can't thank you enough! My wife never watched a Star Trek episode in her life but when she heard the music she watched the entire episode, which is amazing!
I can't get this song out of my head. I can see it now: Star Trek, The Musical. It'd be nice if every time we had strong feelings we had an accompaning sound track and were inspired with lyrics--that is, at least when we were alone.
",,,She's happy and carefree, The opposite of me, I can do the calculus, For her I set aside My need to analyze Now I'm wrecked and searching for y - I'm the x..." "...I solved for y in my computations, But missed vital information, A variable so devastating - I'm the x I'm the x I'm the ex."
This is what the american cinema is capable of when it's allowed to innovate. Thumbs up! I could easily watch a entire star trek movie out of this. They should have turned this into it's own separate full-length feature film.
Okay.. I just cried like a BITCH over this song.. Spock hit SOOOO many places in my heart over a single love that I LITERALLY couldn't help myself but cry... LOST love is still hard even when the love remains.... just not the same... even though you're friends and try to move on... Spock is right... past, present, future.. fuck them all and do what you know is correct for you!!!
This is such a pivotal moment in Spock's development as a character, where he turns toward becoming more Vulcan, not out of logic but out of heartbreak and self-protection (Boimler will at least be relieved!). It also ties in well to the Original Series' depiction of Chapel's lovelorn emotions toward Spock in the "future". Chapel's also going to Dr. Roger Korby's fellowship where she will fall in love with the brilliant scientist, whose life will end in the TOS episode "What Are Little Girls Made Of?", where Chapel is also a pivotal figure.
This was a sad song, but well performed by the actor. In time, I wish this would set Spock up with Leila Kalomi. In all of the remakes of Star Trek with Spock, I've never seen that universe with Leila Kalomi except in Star Trek TOS. *
It's not like she meant to announce her decision publicly instead of letting him down gently, but Spock asked her in a public place, and she was compelled to respond in song.
Let us not forget. Mr Boimler told her that the fate of the galaxy relies upon Spock, gravitating towards his Vulcan lineage. It is possible that she chose this path for the good of the many. Not the one. We see in the Naked Time and a glimpse in Amok Time that her feelings for him are buried, not expunged. So her joy may be at her being successful at saving the galaxy. Not at rejecting the man she loves. Roger Corby, of course, has a far worse fate in store, however. That is the equation.
This kind of annoys me. "But I am also Human, I feel things differently, bigger". Bullcrap of the highest order. The reason Vulcans had to force themselves to learn the discipline of logic is because they felt things MUCH more than humans. Their passions are hotter, their rage is savage to the extreme. If anything, Spock should have an EASIER time controlling his emotions as they are LESS than the average Vulcan, but he still has ALL the mental capabilities and discipline.
Yes, Vulcan emotions are stronger, which is why they suppress them, but because Spock was part human, he didn't suppress them to the same extent as other Vulcans. I agree it sounds contradictory, but I think when Spock said he felt differently, he meant that because he was part-human, he opened up his emotions more, but Christine's breaking up with him caused him to regret all that. And that's what the song was about: He would choose to go 100% logical to avoid getting his heart broken again.
It's also possible that Vulcan suppression techniques aren't as effective on hybrids as full-blooded Vulcans, which was why other Vulcans view his humanity as a handicap. This would explain why he still occasionally smiled in TOS. So this could mean that he would not only double down on suppressing his emotions, he would also, ironically, use human ways of burying them.
@@nicholasemjohnson47 Look ... it doesn't matter if Vulcan Suppression doesn't work as well on Humans or Hybrids because compared to Vulcans, Humans have EXTREMELY WEAK emotions. Like ... basically non-existent feelings. So Spock being a Hybrid MIGHT mean that His control techniques aren't as effective, but that would ALSO mean that His feelings aren't as strong so His technique would be EXACTLY as effective as a regular Vulcan. Spock's Human heritage is just a scape-goat for lazy writing.
@@Runescope You make a good point, but Vulcans always refer to other species and Vulcan hybrids as emotionally handicapped, so I don't think it's fair to call it lazy writing. Humans may feel less compared to Vulcans, but they don't feel the same way. Humans react less strongly, but also differently. As a hybrid, Spock may feel less, but he still feels. And Vulcan suppression technique aren't flawless either.
Play this song at 1.25x and compare it to Chapel's "I'm Ready". You will see these are the same song with different lyrics. Obviously done on purpose since it's Spock and Chapel.
its amazing just feel like im him .... what we dont do for girls ... i set aside my needs for her and she still dont care .....Never Again .... Just like him ...in the future he Never made this mistake again ....Hope you are good Brother :) im here for you if you need me :)
Wonder what the Kelvin version of those song would be like? Uhura and Spock date in the JJ movies, alternate timeline, so this scene would play out with these two kissing. Maybe ai art video can make the alternative version? 3:05 is where Kelvin Uhura starts singing and comforting Spock, then the two fall in love.
you know, one thing that just hit me.... Lets... be thankful this is an alternate universe... cuz... Spock's vulcan.. he was mated to T'Pring years before this. they were bonded as children.
It's stated that people experiencing strong emotions are being compelled to sing things they wouldn't normally say out loud, and Spock asked her about her decision not to tell him straight away in a public place with her friends watching. She couldn't NOT answer in song at the point.
@@wendyheatherwood Does not matter. Even before the compelling nature of the song or this episode - she pursued him and once she got him and helped shred his relationship with T'Pring, she rejects him.
@@eddiek8179 Yes, but she had started seeing him and was happy that she was bringing out his emotional, human side, but then she saw Boimler's reaction to Smiling Spock and realised that she was obviously going to leave him, she had to leave him and let him return to his Vulcan stoic nature or the future wouldn't happen right. Better to do it now when it hurt the least, because it would only hurt more the more invested she got.
You may be unfairly judging our dear nurse? T'Pring is due to get her revenge of course in Amok Time. But let us not forget. Chapel's joy may not be because of her breakup from Spock. It may, in reality, be due to having made a sacrifice in order to save the galaxy. Boimler informed her that Spock needed to gravitate towards his Vulcan heritage to safeguard the future. Plus, T'Pring stepped away from Spock. So what has he done wrong now? Christine, as we know from the Naked Time and Amok Time, still loves him many years later. Corby, of course, is doomed. That is the equation.
He has a fiancé he's betraying with chapel, he is hurting two people (chapel & tpring) by doing so and now that chapel made a final decision he cries he is "the ex"? come on babyspock
He sings, “I’ve got no one but myself to blame. I’ve betrayed my core philosophy.” Come on, listen to ALL the lyrics. That would be the logical thing to do before throwing him shade.

I think that look was supposed to be her noticing the first notes of music ... she did a similar look just before Christine started singing.. I think it was more like "OH there is music again"
She looked up when she heard the music start playing. Watch it again from that perspective. She was very empathetic toward Spock and the sadness he was expressing through the words in the song.
when they start singing man they ruin the whole show. its bullshit.plus theres a ton of auto tune. and spock is now all gay and emotional. its disgusting
Even the ENTERPRISE got into it...notice the status lights behind him as he walks away from the console and starts the first bridge- they start to flash in time with the snare. It's about at 01:37. Genus!
Look I love Star Trek it not the show made me love sci-fi but it was the reason I stayed a huge sci-fi fan but have notice only two couples in all the star treks made it as in didn’t break up none on Enterprise none on OG 1 on new gen that’s Troy and riker guess they really count cause they didn’t get back together till the movies on voyager 1 Paris and B’Elana on Deep space none keiko and O’Brien word and jadiza didn’t break up but she did die so don’t think it counts wow couples don’t do well in the future I always said need to do away with marriage just do partnerships contracts with options to renew each contract 5 years long
