I've seen you guys and other outlets focus a lot on "Steam Deck competitors" lately, and really.. they are not competitors if they aren't within ball-park of the Steam Deck pricing. That is exactly what made the deck so popular. It delivers a lot for the price. These hand held PCs existed before the deck, but were always overpriced. They didn't make much of a dent in the market. We simply need more competition within the deck pricing or nearby it.

I mean, let's be real, it's the Switch's 120 Million sales amount that put a loud signal that people wanted and will pay for a portable home console experience (especially over the WiiU which had similar level of games including Nintendo "Magic", just distributed worse). Valve just did it in a way that it ia truly console-like and with the associated QOL stuff. Heck, some of the Valve stuff is getting better than console (like Steam Remote Play), but that just makes a non-valve PC experience much worse by comparison. This ASUS ROG device seems to have some custom stuff, but only time will tell if can suspend games and put the system to sleep without hicccups. Asus has been killing it. I'm a huge Steam Deck fan. I pre-ordered within 30 minutes of release and spend 80% of my gaming time on the Deck (despite owning a PS5 and desktop PC with Ultrawide monitor.) I adore the Deck so much. But if this thing is seriously that much more powerful, the price is $800 or under and they can get the software experience at least in the same ballpark as Valve (Valve absolutely knocked it out of the park with the console like experience) I will be happy to upgrade. With just how much I love my Steam Deck I would be willing to spend up for a beefier version. If Valve released a Steam Deck Pro for like $800 with solid upgrades I would buy it tomorrow. The handheld gaming experience is probably my favorite tech product of the past 10 years. The Oculus Quest 2 was probably the most exciting during lockdown. I've been a VR fan for awhile now, buying the first gen Oculus Rift relatively early on. But the standalone capabilities of the Quest was amazing. Being able to go down to my apartment parking garage and play Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners without having to worry about any sort of space constraint was incredible. I never felt as immersed in VR as I did that day. Higher end PC/PSVR be damned. The tethered nature makes it so much less novel and a clear step back imo. But I'm getting off topic. The Quest 2 was amazing but after a couple of months I would only touch it maybe once a week. With the Deck, I was nearly as excited using it for the first time. But the difference is, that excitement never faded. I had to go without a car for a month and a half when mine was stolen and totaled. Then I was waiting on insurance to get me back on the road, the Deck was a godsend on my public transportation morning commutes. I can take it with me on camping trips. Spend 95% of the day unplugged and exploring nature, then spend an hour playing a game near the campfire before bed with a beer. Or on a plane with my Sony XM4's. It's just an amazing piece of tech at an amazing price.

That's the big if I have been thinking about too. Putting aside steam input or the fact I daily Linux which I realize is a bias, steam deck has been the success it is in part due to the software. I haven't used an Asus laptop before, but I have used their mobos, monitors, GPUs, etc. We are lucky to see firmware updates from a board manufacturer. Maybe a companion app or overclocking utility. I'd be really curious to know if Asus is up to the task when it comes to software development for this handheld. This is where I admittedly lack knowledge. Asus seems to do extremely wel in the mobile market. Doing very well in the laptop department, getting high praise from Margues Brownlee for their phone and now apparently smashing the handheld console market (even though that thing will probably set you back $1000)...they really seem to do deliver the right products at the right time.

It's worth noting, since you mentioned it a few times, hardly any emulated games can physically run at 120fps unless there are dedicated mods for them. There are a few instances that contradict this, but for the vast majority of games and emulators, framerates higher than 60 are impossible.

Zen4 + RDNA3 definitely has my curiosity, as does the fact that whilst it doesn't come with HE sticks, they are apparently replaceable, so it may be an option eventually. The 1 thing that might put me off is the screen. Apparently the screen type was 1 of the details Linus wasn't allowed to share, which has me thinking it probably isn't OLED. If I'm gonna be shelling out for a not-cheap console I'd want it to have OLED.

I am glad to see a wide variety of handhelds for PC gaming. The variety of prices, designs, and performance makes it accessible for many kinds of people. While this one will probably be expensive, it's good to see what a higher level of performance can do in a device of this size.

I do think it will be great for a small group of people, that can afford pay the cost of a good gaming desktop for a handheld device. But for most, the Steam Deck price is still hard to beat. Especially for the group of new to PC gaming folks. I love ASUS and this device looks great. But for me it sits with all the other windows handhelds that boast better hardware at a much higher price(unless they prove me wrong). My desk top will always be my primary gaming machine. But I love the Steam Deck as my secondary go to.

I know there's probably chip bits behind those controller bits, but I feel like for ergonomics, having it detachable like the switch could be more modular and allow for different configurations or using it in a kickstand configuration on a table or back-of-a-seat. Having them fixed does seem like a disadvantage - especially in transit - on my steam deck Also just guessing: solid stat/piezoelectric cooling?

@JC7119 Год назад
@@YounesLayachi so the custom connector is 64gb according to the spec vs USB 4x2 which is 80gb. Even if there is a bit of overhead I highly doubt 16gb worth and even with the bit of added latency I don't think it would be that much especially based on current eGPU performance (more on that later). What would be that much however would be the decrease in price and more importantly be a first to market with real docking setup. Considering TB4/USB4 with current docks bottle necks gpu by around half, 80gb should get it pretty close to desktop speeds, at least that's what the number show from testing over the years. Edit: also it's only back and forth when you push back to the desktops display. Hence why even with TB4 when going to an external monitor the FPS is higher.
