Hello friends!
Welcome to my RU-vid channel and my very first video! I'm Ariel, aka Hootie, and next year in 2024, I'll be thruhiking the Appalachian Trail and vlogging my journey. I've got absolutely no experience in backpacking or video creation but dang it if I'm not going to give it everything I can!
I first discovered the Appalachian Trail back in 2017 and when I learned that people walk the almost 2200 miles in one shot, I decided right then that one day I would do it too. Now, 7 years later, I'm going to turn my dream into a reality.
If you'd like to follow my journey as my Dad and I walk through 14 states from Georgia to Maine, consider subscribing! I'd also love for you to leave a comment with any tips, tricks, and questions you may have so I can respond and get to know you all!

I started watching thru-hikers on the AT last year. Some didn’t make it, some did a lot of whining and some sucked it up and completed the trail. I hope you persevere and enjoy your wander through the woods all the way to Maine. As a veteran myself I would like to think that I have the mental fortitude to hang in there for the journey. However, my old knees and ankles would quickly say NO! So I will sit back and watch and cheer for you every step of the way. Enjoy every moment!

Thanks for your service, Hootie. I’m an Air Force vet, probably your dad’s age. Experienced backpacker, but not a thru hiker. Planning to do the AZT with my adult kids in the next few years. I’m subscribing and following you because I think gaining insight from a new comer to thru hiking can be as valuable as from a veteran hiker. Wishing you the best in your next life chapter, and I’m betting on you be that top 25% who finishes the AT!!

Hi Hootie! See you out there! My husband and I were out there on Guam from 2019-2021. Sounds like you’re filming this by Jimmy Ds 🤣🤪. We start in March once his terminal leave kicks in. He just hit his 20 yrs in the Coast Guard! Just subbed to your channel!

Its hard, isolating, and the weather can beat you down in a matter of hours. Windy, Icy 16 degree nights in February and into March. You're only shot is what other channel hosts never admit: They take advantage of the 3 major hostels in the first 75 miles. stay in them and have them shuttle you back and forth to the trail heads. All the successful hikers use them. They just dont admit it. Trust me on this or you will fail. (Len Foote, Around the Bend, and The Hiker). Also, carry a firearm. The Ruger MCP Max is 15 oz w/ 10 rounds of aluminum 380. Good luck.

Hi! Stan the man is my brother and that was my son he referred to. He was on a Los Angeles class sub and stationed in Guam with a 6 month station in Hawaii as well. We had the privilege of visiting him in both places. Shortly after getting out of the Navy he did a short backpacking trip on the AT, completing Shenandoah National Park. Hi, Hootie--great video! I'm retired from the Air Force, and then I was a high school English teacher and retired from that. I'll see you out there, I've got a March 15 start date at Amicalola. I'm taking my fiddle along, but I won't be as loud and obnoxious as that club next to you, heh!

Hafa Adai! I'm retired from the Coast Guard and was stationed in Guam from 1997-2000 - best tour of my 22 years (I made finadene to accompany dinner tonight here in Thailand)! My wife successfully thru-hiked the AT in 2018 by herself, while our twins and I followed along in our small RV the entire way. Let me know if you have any questions, my wife or I could probably come up with some decent answers! I subbed and will be following along.

We're going NOBO and while we didn't necessarily plan to be in the bubble, it's probably going to work out that way based on timing of my separation and the time my Dad's requested time off work. And as far as vlogging on trail, I'm hoping to channel my inner Dixie (from Homemade Wanderlust) and learn as I go, one step at a time. Haha literally.

You can do it -- hiker challenge -- Use both pronunciations along the way -- Appal (atch) ian Trail until passing Norfolk -- then Appa (lay) chian Trail after... Both are appropriate just a habit between those living in the Southern States or not -- ... We will look forward to seeing you find JOY in your JOurneY.

I'm starting my hike in late March and I hope to vlog every day. I intend to edit my videos at night before I go to sleep and then I'll be uploading them when I get into towns. :)

I'd say I'm in good shape, but not great shape. I lift 3 days a week consistently and I run and cycle.
